[H] 64 bit Vista Questions
For Greg, and others actually running VISTA 64; I am going to install 64 bit VISTA on a system with 8GB of RAM. I am going to go with a new Video card = SAPPHIRE 100243-1GL Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail I am figuring the 1GB isn't a problem because 64 bit addressing will not reduce available system RAM the way it would in a 32 bit system?? But is there anything else I should think about for a video card with 1GB of RAM? Also anybody care to speculate if Talkworks PRO will run on 64 bit Vista? Will an older external serial modem work OK on Vista 64? Do most other modern 32 bit apps run on Vista64 or is this a constant problem of getting software and hardware working?
Re: [H] 64 bit Vista Questions
You will be fine, pretty sure your BIOS will allow upto 2^64 bits of address space to work with (2048 PetaBytes), so it has PLENTY of room to squeeze that 1GB of VRAM in ;) There are no other considerations when talking about videa card RAM sizes that I am aware of. The vast majority of 32 bit apps work on Vista 64. I have yet to find anything that doesn't other then stuff that comes with - or ties itself closely - to device drivers. I have no idea about TalkWorks as it's not something I have ever used. All 16 bit support is severed in Vista x64 though, which means some VERY old 32bit apps have issues installing due to 16 bit installers hanging around for a while. [H] Gigabitifying my network
Sorry for the lame subject title, but. I have a WRT54GL linksys router connected to an ADSL modem. Right now all the 4 ports are occupied by various devices. The primary ones being my fileserver and my main machine. Since the switch on the WRT is 10/100 only, I've been feeling the pain when transferring large files. Both my fileserver and my main computer have Gbit NICS on them and I would like to take advantage of them. I've looked around (NEWEGG) and have seen that 4-5 port switches cost around the 50 dollar range. That's perfect and I can spare that kind of cash. That being said, what is the best way to integrate the switch into my current setup? Would it be: MODEM Router(Port1) - Gbit Switch -- Devices? Would another method be more faster and/or elegant? I love my router and don't want to change it for a gigabit model, but if the collective says so, I will have to consider strongly. -- Best Regards, Zulfiqar Naushad

Re: [H] Gigabitifying my network
That method seems fine I have a similar setup going on here Netgear DM111P wan port on a WRT54GS running tomato port on the WRT hooked up to a port on a Buffalo 8 port gigabit switch occasionally I'll hang 100mbps devices off the WRT, that's more an issue of cable management than anything else. Traffic between local nodes will just bound around the gigabit switches ports and never get anywhere near the router, so it's as performant as it gets. You're right about the memory addressing. Not sure if there are any cadveats about the memory on the video card other than it's probably overkill, but that's not an issue here =) Yeah, but it is only 40 bucks more and it might help with video editing. [H] OT: IP to location lookup was Re: Facebook
Cool link, thanks! It's at least 50-60mi, means my DSL must pass through Postfalls, ID then route back to Seattle, WA. Neotrace (really old 2001 version) did not give me that unlike when I looked up D's IP. Big city 45mi away is QWest telco but we're Verizon, I imagine that's coming from our proximity to the NW Idaho border. Even with same area code as qwest customers we have to pay long distance since it's a inter-carrier call. Unlike all of NJ/NYC/etc... being Verizon. I'd rather have Qwest be on same network as the rest of the area, or at least have a FiOS option since the local Verizon CO is just 5 blocks away. We so far up Verizon's ass here it's not funny, my ATT cell phone has to talk 25mi to a tower in Idaho while a VZW tower sits 6 blocks away at the local HS! So weird after living most of my life in NJ where every town is surrounded bordered by neighbor towns with population everywhere. Up here it's more spread out thin population in spoke hub fashion with the spokes far from the hubs and hubs sometimes not where they make sense! You don't want the data off a Comcast DVR, it's so compressed that it bands like 16bit graphics and even subtitle data is lost. This was on a Minneapolis, MN market SA DVR. When CC gets around to enabling SA's SARA OS' DRM features it will disallow/degrade recorded playback or even tuner output via component or whatever else they choose. As long as they're in control of the STB you'll never get what you pay for! James Maki wrote: At this time I believe this is the only way to get HD content off of a cable company STB. Re: [H] Facebook
You're right, and sorry for my cranckiness, it came out wrong because of that. What I wanted to say is that sites like FB are often searched by employers in regard to job applicants. In my country there recently has been several news articles on the subject. Mostly because people over the years make several profiles on several sites and then forget about them as time passes. And ones future boss might get quite a story from those profiles. With the earlier compromized (also) mail servers at yahoo, google, among others, history shows that one is taking a risk about ones personal info by submitting to an online service. #2 should be about a grain of rice. On Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 2:45 AM, DHSinclair [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Darnit! What is a #2? ok, it has been too many years. [H] New video card - GTX 260 or HD 4870?
I'm upgrading the video card in my gaming rig and have the choice narrowed down to two in my price range, the Nvidia GTX 260 or ATI HD 4870. Both seem to score fairly identical in most benchmarks so I guess the decision might come down to extras. For me, noise and cooling are a big issue. My PC case is right next to my desk in my office and I can't stand loud fans. What's the experience from the group with either of these cards and fan noise vs temp? I am leaning towards the 260 because I have heard better things about their drivers as opposed to ATI's. My last 3 cards have all been ATIs and while they have served me very well in terms of hardware I've always had some sort of issue with the driver. For example, x1950 I currently am using doesn't seem to be able to control the fan speed properly using the ATI Tool so I have to manually set it high for gaming and low otherwise. I don't plan on going dual cards if that makes a difference between the two. Brian
Re: [H] New video card - GTX 260 or HD 4870?
Well, Maximum PC and Extreme tech have been giving the 4870 the nod in the last few months... a better card and cheaper. Particularly when it comes to video. I think the cooling / noise is more about the specific manufacture then it is the GPU. I too have a X1950, although it is AGP. And I just bought this five minutes ago... pretty good deal, considering it is an ASUS. Newegg has free shipping for the next hour or so. Re: [H] [Bulk] New video card - GTX 260 or HD 4870?
Complex questions. First off, I game on a 24 monitor @ 1920x1200. My old box with WinXP, DX9 and 2 gig of RAM DID run Crysis with everything set an Medium with good results. My recently upgraded box still with 2 gigs (soon to be 4 as soon as NewEgg ships my Mushkin), Vista64, DX10.1 and Catylyst 8.9 I have to set everything on low or it starts to drive me nuts. I used the same Radeon HD4850 in both and even though DX10 is visibly better looking I'm disappointed in the performance drop. Anyway, they're both good cards and even though I try to support AMD every chance I get the GTX260 is apparently superior in every respect.
