Is this some Dell trickery? I thought that wifi cards were universally
compatible.

Perhaps the softkeys for turning the card on and off are somehow
interfering?

Did you try to update the firmware of the Dell Laptop?

Win7 recognizes it, installs drivers for it...doesn't report any
errors...but if I boot with the wireless on...Win7 freezes downthen, if
I boot with the wireless off...I get in Win7 just fine...but as soon as I
turn the wireless on...lockdown. I have swapped it in and out with the old

Re: [H] Greg what do you think of this SSD?

2010-05-24 Thread Bino Gopal

Bought one a few months back and replaced the HD on my laptop (T61) and
installed Win7 Ent; it's freaking amazing how fast things are now (like
startup, or shutdown, or loading stuff once you log in). Wouldn't go back for
anything now!! My roommate dropped ~$450 for the 160GB (for his Dell XPS
laptop using XP) a few months before that, and is having the same
experience...though if he doesn't have Win7 and TRIM is he going to start
having issues...? Hmm, hadn't thought of that when I talked him into getting
it! :P

So I paid $220 back then; $200 is a great price now. And I don't expect the
SSD to last that long-but the amount of time I've saving over just the next 2
years will more than justify the cost (and responsiveness too), such that I can
easily upgrade to a much bigger drive then (~2 yrs from now) and be totally
happy with what I got! It really is the most significant PC upgrade I've seen
in a long time. Of course I'm using Win7 Ent 64-bit with Office 64-bit and
things like Outlook (the main program I use everyday) might run faster due to
the 64-bit stuff, but the SSD makes a big difference with that and lots of
other stuff...

But that's JM2C on the subject... :P

Known problem, usually solved by a firmware update or using an OS that
 actually supports TRIM.

The core problem is that SSDs are completely different technogy from
spinning disks and you can't treat them the same. You shouldnt defrag
SSDs or do anything that does more writes than necessary. And never
use a tool like Spinrite on them.

[H] XP System Restore?

2010-05-24 Thread DSinc

Are there any good books to read about System Restore?
I use it. I like it. It has saved my bacon twice now.

I have noticed that my newer C2D machines like to create a new Restore
point every 24hrs, roughly. Odd.

Is this normal?

Should I be looking for something not working correctly?

(I will share that my newest/older AMD Barton 2500+ also shares this odd
behavior!)

I do use CCleaner to cull old Restore Points each month when I do
WinUpdates. I always create a new, manual Restore Point post update.

ATM, I do not seem to have any trouble with any of my clients. Well,
that I am aware of!

Just wondering?
Best,
Duncan

I haven't seen this type of behavior on my systems (WinXP/SP2), but
the TechRepublic article I'm linking to says that it is standard
behavior for System Restore to save every 24 hours. Who knew?

The article also provides registry tweaks to set your own frequency
and get around the 24 hour cycle.

Re: [H] XP System Restore?

Stan,
Yes, I do much the same each month after I do my WinUpdates. I digested
the link Mike shared. Nice read. I'm now waiting for the internal timers
to work post yesterday's WinUpdates. Minor quibble!

At least I now accept that my 'more modern' C2D/Asus P5Q systems seem to
run just about like the link Mike shared. Fair Dinkum!

But I have yet to see my really old XP systems (2) that only get turned
on for major app updates (~every 2wks) ever create a Restore Point at
boot up. Smaller quibble! Much smaller because these 2 machines are
old; one is an Asus CUBX/P3-800, and, the other is an AMD Barton
2500+/Asus A7N8X-E-Deluxe.

BTW: FORC5 is NOT crazy! Asus A7N8X series m/b's have lousy RTC logic.
Mine is now screwing up even w/XP locked to the NIST clock in CO. LOL!
Another old soldier for the pasture! Luckily I can still force these 2
old cranky PC's to reset their clocks ATM.

I so like this RP protection. Now, I have some info to
customize/throttle it just a bit. Maybe :)

Best,
Duncan
