Re: [H] [hardware] Repairing damaged photos

2008-10-08 Thread Steve
I used 'Recover My Photo's' http://www.getdata.com/ with great success to
recover photo's ( 500+) from a damaged card.

Quote from Help file
"Recover My Photos is data recovery software that will recover:

Files and Folders emptied from the Recycle Bin.
Files and Folders deleted using DOS commands (via the command line).
Drives that have been accidentally re-formatted - even after a new operating
system has been installed.
Digital camera storage cards which have been formatted or from which photos
have been deleted.

Recover My Photos can recover data from various types of file storage media
including; Hard Drives; Floppy disks; Zip Disks; Digital camera cards; USB
Drives.
It has a built in file preview which allows you to examine the contents of
may types of deleted files prior to saving (see the table below)."

I recovered some deleted files from a hard drive (jpgs.) About half of
them are viewable and look fine, and the rest won't view at all. Is there
software that will try to repair these already recovered files? Everything
I've found so far wants to scan the entire drive looking for deleted files,
and I've already done that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What do you guys think about XFX HD5770? I have one of their nVidia cards

me to return it (and have nothing in the meantime) and I refused. But for
a single monitor, it works fine and it is in my second PC. With that

My plan is to try to return the HIS for RMA and wait out the return...then

Right now, I'm sort of gun shy on vid cards

temp files into the documents folder and there are so many files she can't
list or view them in that directory any longer. I was thinking a BART or

Re: [H] Dell Laptop Batteries

2006-08-17 Thread Steve
I do, we have a variety of IBM, HP and Dell laptops, mostly Dell and they
are the most reliable out of the three. HP are very poor in particular.
Laptops are throw away items these days - bin them after 3 years and move
on, Dell in part have made that possible ! (This is corporate market, not
home user trying to eek out 15 years from a laptop !)

Dell servers in the 2/4 CPU market are fantastic, unbeatable, load them up,
stick them in a rack and leave them, perfect, do just what they say on the
tin. Cheap too, much easier to buy then IBM or HP, pita. Dell support in
UK is great too.

I specify and buy Dell laptops and servers every week and Dell, so far, have
never let me down and have saved me a fortune against IBM..

Genious. Sheer, plain genious.

We're an early seeder, so I've had access to the final Distros for the
last

two days and we've been playing around with it. Let me tell you a few
things that are worth noting:

* The install was done on two PCs, one a Core 2 Duo on a 965P board (the
Gigabyte). It recognized and correctly configured all devices, audio,
video

(a 7950GT) as well as set performance on SATA drives. It recognized a USB
Wireless NIC and was able to do WPA to our router (something I've had
significant difficulties with in Linux in the past). The second PC, an
AMD
4400+ on the Asus A8N32-SLI correctly configured also, found all drivers
out

of the box and ran with no issues.

* Xen support within it is fantastic.

* New game based support under Transgamer allowed for fluid use of games
like World of Warcraft and Civilization IV, the only two games we tried.
It
was indistinguishable from Windows XP as to their performance (IMHO),
while

I'm sure benchmarks may say different, I was impressed.

* The new KDE interface is fluid and intuitive - far more so then MS Vista
at this point, and the inbuilt features in the full version - like LinDVD
(bundled from Intervideo) offered great features like passing AC3/DTS and
decoding as well.

I'm not saying that Mandriva 2007 is going to be my regular platform, but
this is as close to a solid-consumer friendly desktop format of Linux
ever.

Period. This is a major leap over Mandriva 2006, and I think a lot of
people will be seriously impressed with the feature set.

The install is painless. The performance is excellent. Support for
hardware is, frankly, better then Vista 5600/5728 at this point. On
Monday,

Mandriva will release the torrents to the Club members and shortly after
that to the public. Let me say this: if you're a club member or if you
are

thinking about it, this is definitely a distro worth grabbing.

CW

(Here's hoping I see this post return to me, for some reason I still seem
to

be NO-ACK with the list since Sunday)

2006-11-08 Thread Steve

You know, I've wondered now and then about my choice of email programs.
Over the years I've used Agent, Outlook (work), Eudora, Notes (work) and a
several others I can't remember. I've given each one a good trial of a month
or 2 or more, but in the end I still prefer OE for it's simplicity and ease
of use.
My personal email requirement aren't great as I generally deal with less
than 100/day. But some of those mailboxes now have thousands of messages
each.
Combined with Popfile as my spamfilter and Symantec Corp (now NOD32) for
virus, I've yet to find anything that's as quick and as simple to setup &
use.
As for fubars, over all the years that OE has been out, only twice has it
given me grief and both times I've recovered using a 3rd party tool.

I guess its just me... :)

This is just another reason I prefer Eudora as all one has to do is copy
their Eudora program & data folders to the new machine. FWIW many people
still have their program & data folders as one in the same which imho
makes things much easier.

Just because it's free with the OS does not make it decent & if anything
it's the other way around.

I see by your quoting that you don't use "selective text quoting" in your
replies. Oh wait a minute OE doesn't support this very basic feature that
almost all the other email apps do. OE also doesn't supt plugins that one
can get for Eudora that removes all the extra > when something has been
forwarded a half a dozen times. FWIW I backup my Eudora mailboxes to my
laptop & it's much easier than trying to find the OE mailboxes & I also
get my address book. Gee the Windows Address Book is not with the OE files
so it's somewhere else. The point is that MSFT likes to scatter things
everywhere instead of being neat which also happens to make things easier
to understand for the novices.

Nothing to do with free.it works and it works well for my needs. That's
all I require. If Eudora rocks your boat, sweet, but I would maintain that
OE will suffice the majority of users.

Re: [H] trying to setup a second WAP

Although they are called routers I suspect they are not proper routers so
the 1st device may not be able to route to a second internal subnet, even if
you have been able to configure it in some way.

Try giving the 2nd device an address like 192.168.1.100 and see what
happens.

Check the arp table on the 1st device to see what appears in there - you
should see the mac address of the 2nd device plus it's IP address.

confused. :)

Any opinions on who is has the best? Needs to be small business grade,
not

home stuff

Aventail, SonicWall, Juniper , Cisco, Netgear, D-Link, Firebox, Check
Point, etc..

I kinda like the idea of the new SSL-VPN's, no client install needed, but
are they as good/OK compared to the IPsec VPN stuff??

The SSL-VPN appliances seem hot right now..

Leaning towards the Sonicwall or Juniper SA 700 right now. :)

Thanks Greg and Thane. The link you sent expired, I think - Greg but I
have a feeling its the same as what Thane sent and the same that I
tried. When I run that 15 mb download it fetches stuff from
somewhere... problem is it doesn't fetch anything on this system. I
assume it's going to windows update - whatever the case is, it will
not download anything and just hangs. Same thing happens when you run
windows update. I assume it's because IE is so screwed up right now.

I tried to install v. 6 of IE for Win2K / 9x without success. If I
can't find the full install for IE7 I think this thing is
perma-screwed. Way to go MS!

no, autopatcher contains all the files, including MS extras etc. Gets

I spend a good chunk of time at work on 12hr shifts and would love to

in the military and behind a pretty serious firewall that blocks just
about everything but your standard ports. What are my options for
remote desktop work? I use VNC all the time at home to control
various PCs around the house but I can't just ask for them to open the
ports at work. Would setting VNC to work on port 80 or 21 on my
machine at home work? I don't run a webserver or ftp server so
blocking access to those isn't a problem.

I use the HTTPS port 443 with Radmin. This port usually is open. Of course you don't want
to be using this port with another process unless your using something like Global Secure
Desktop http://www.tarantella.com/ which allows you to redirect all 443 traffic not
designated for GSD. Linux & Windows versions available.
You can also designate the port for MS Remote Desktop. You just need to make a registry
change.

[H] Time taken to convert an Avi?

2005-03-22 Thread Steve
Just wondering what how long it generally takes for others to convert avi's to SVCD?
Currently I'm converting a BBC series "Wild Weather" into SVCD compliant PAL mpgs before
converting them to DVD with SVCD2DVD. Each avi is approx 1hr long (720Mb) and they're
taking me 2hrs each on a P4 2.8 with a gig of ram using TMPGEnc Express. Seems a long time
for such a task.

Re: [H] Converting AVI to DVD.

2005-03-23 Thread Steve
If you want to fit multiple avi's onto DVD ( as I did with the 4hr BBC series) I find it
best to convert to SVCD with TMPGenc and then use Svcd2Dvd to make a DVD with menus,
chapters etc. Took me 8hrs to convert the above to SVCD & then only 25mins to make a DVD.
I've tried a few of the direct avi-dvd encoders and all so far (except for TMPGenc) have
been less than outstanding in output quality. But even when using TMPGenc, if I had
converted directly from avi to DVD the resultant file was 10gb. Using the avi >svcd > dvd
approach fits all on a DVD as there is no video encoding for SVCD > DVD

Well with much anticipation I got my 6600GT in today and tried installing
it. When I booted up the was nothing but a garbled screen. I could see the
boot process slightly and all indications that it was going into Windows.
When it got to the XP splash screen the video got better but still had
artifacts and then getting to the logon screen cleared up entirely. Ran
the
install CD and it said to reboot, and then the garbled screen again on
boot
no better than before. It goes into Windows but will not be recognized by
the drivers and will not allow screen resolution changes. I was able by
repeatedly rebooting able to get to the BIOS and make sure that the AGP
inits first and so on, but to no avail.
I'm thinking the card is bad any other ideas to try??

MSI KT6V with the latest BIOS and drivers currently running a 9500 soft
modded to a 9700 but before the install it was a AIW 9800 Pro. I
uninstalled
the card and ran ATI's utility to remove all drivers and other software

New install XP. Accessing shares on LAN, copying, pasting etc all OK. *But*
if I try to run an executable from a share i.e. any install routine, the
process pauses for about 1 sec then reboots. No crash dump, nothing.

I've booted using msconfig to disable all startup proggies, .ini's, services

Yet if I boot in safe mode with networking all is ok. So I suspect a driver.
But how to trace with no crash dump? Bootlog shows nothing unusual. Anyone
else seen this or have a clue as to the cause.

Not a good analogy in my books. Cars need gas to work...the game doesn't
need X rated material to run.
What if each car manufacturer placed a booby trap in each vehicle that would

It's buried, and not accessable through normal methods. Without someone
hacking the game, you're not going to get at that content. How can the
game manufacturer be held liable for that?

My gas tank is full of gasoline. If I shot a hole through it, my car would

At some point in trying to tweak my about:config file I think I
screwed something up. FF randomly "freezes" and stops responding for
anywhere from 5-20 seconds. It doesn't go to 99% CPU usage or swap,
just freezes.

I tried uninstsalling/reinstalling but everything was exactly the
same. I deleted the Program Files directory - is it keeping
settings/preferences in another location on the machine?

Anyways, is there a way I can reset my about:config back to its
original state? Or am I completely screwed and have to start fresh
and redo all my extensions, bookmarks, etc.

[H] What's fastest ?

2006-01-29 Thread Steve
Am building a database server for SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition. OS
will be Windows 2003 Server Enterprise edition. Server is probably going to
be a Dell 6850
(http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pedge_6850?c=uk&l=en&s=lca&~tab=specstab#tabtop)
Although I can get older IBM servers (hence the 4MB L3 cache option below)
for a very good price.

Basic spec is 4 CPU's, 24 GB of RAM and an external disk array. Just
wondering how much performance difference there is between the followoing
CPU's:

4 x Xeon MP 3.0 GHz 4MB L3 cache (400 MHz FSB ?)
4 x Xeon MP 3.0 GHz 8 MB L3 cache (667 MHz FSB)
4 x Xeon 3.6 GHz 1 MB L2 cache
4 x Xeon dual core 2.6 GHz 2 x 1 MB L2 cache

My gut reaction says the 8 MB L3 cache chips will be faster than even the
dual core chips in real world performance. Anybody else have a view ?

Thanks, Steve

Re: [H] What's fastest ?

2006-01-29 Thread Steve
Thanks, I do plan running x64. I'd like to try an HP box, almost all my
stuff so far is Dell, loads of 1850's and a few 2850's, also got two Compaq
DL580's in quad format with Xeon 1.4GHz CPU's, some of the first that came
out about three and a half years ago. The Compaq boxes have been great for
reliability, not a single problem but that is when it was Compaq not HP.

Chris, the system ram will be a minimum of 24 GB - knowing how Dell drop
their pants when you get close to issuing a PO I guess this might increase
to 32 MB :-) The power is an issue but these are going into a data centre
in London and the power is included in the rack space.

OK, IBM servers are out !

We have two identical "big" database servers at work with the following
specs: 4x Xeon MP 3.0 (unknown cache) with 16GB. We have tempdb,
transaction logs, and data volumes all split. To be honest, I haven't been
that impressed with the performance of either. While I can only speculate,
I think the real reason they appear to be such underperformers (for what
they are) is that the Xeons all share a single bus.

Personally, I would strongly encourage that you look at some Proliant
4-way Opteron machines. The processor bus and memory architecture should
allow more "raw" speed to become "useful" speed. Opterons have
historically proven to be better database servers--quite possibly for this
reason.

I'd also run Win2k3 Server x64.

Re: [H] Upgrade Time

2008-10-08 Thread Steve Tomporowski
That's actually a good reason for going quad is to be able to get a
lot running at the same time and still be snappy. Which brings to
mind what a quad core would do for my music production. Generally you
get limited in the number of software synths running. If you were
running a VST host like Cubase, would the extra cores allow you to
load up on the synths? Interesting question.

[H] Asus P5Q

2008-10-23 Thread Steve Tomporowski
I'm getting ready to get this board, but some of the issues mentioned
on Newegg bother me a bit.

What is the issue with the P5Q and memory? To me, if you start
talking 'quality' memory, it sounds to me like an unstable design.

What about BIOS issues? There were a few scattered over different
dates, but interspersed with solid 5's and no issues.

Oh, yeah, I'm going to put an E8500 in it.

ThanksSteve

[H] Thunderbird Problems (the Email not the car!)

2008-10-23 Thread Steve Tomporowski
I've tried looking up these two problems on the net and the answers
are all over the place, maybe someone here has some real experience.

Problem 1: AT&T

AT&T keeps telling me to set SSL on for both incoming and outgoing
mail. When I set it for incoming mail, I can't get any and the error
message is that the server does not support SSL.

Answer from AT&T: We don't support Thunderbird, but we can send you
over to Support Plus!

Temporary Solution: Turn off SSL and I get email. It's worked for
the past few months.

Problem 2: Cox HSI

My house has both Cox (my wife) and AT&T (me), when I try to use my
cox email address over the AT&T DSL, I can receive mail, but not send
it. Error is that the Server is not responding.

Answer from Cox: We don't support Thunderbird.

Temporary Solution: None, tried all sorts of options, nothing seems to work.

Any ideas? Experience?

ThanksSteve

Re: [H] Thunderbird Problems (the Email not the car!)

2008-10-24 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Greg,

Thanks for the link to the port 25 Opt-out, that will probably work nicely.

Gary,

I don't have my system right in front of me now, but I'm pretty sure
that the ports were correct when SSL was turned on. Thunderbird
changes the ports automatically. IIRC the error was: "This server
does not support secure authentication."

Maybe I'm chasing the wrong problem?

Scott,

Yeah I noticed a lot of people having the same problem, but I'd like
to get it working properly, not the work-around of using gmail that
seems to be the solution of choice.

Thanks to all for the replies, progress will be noted here.

ThanksSteve

Thanks, but that memory issue bothered me, so I've gone with a

Re: [H] Thunderbird Problems (the Email not the car!)

2008-10-28 Thread Steve Tomporowski
I think I've got both problems sorted out now, not solved, have to
give one a shot.

AT&T doesn't support secure authentication, which was what I was
turning on. Really dumb for me on that one. Then apparently there is
an AT&T bug that keeps sending you emails despite the fact that you
are correctly set with SSL.

I'm trying to access the COX server from the AT&T network. Cox has
port 25 blocking, but I can't find an opt-out on their site. I'll
have to give them a call (and not tell them I'm using TB as they'll
just jump ship on me immediately).

Re: [H] USB cable for external drive.

2008-11-26 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Actually it's not a choke but a ferrite bead. A ferrite material is
essentially a magnetic sensitive ceramic (yes, they bust easily) that
has a variable impedance to frequencies travelling through it. The
impedance goes up with frequency. This rounds off the edges of pulses
which really does nothing for the signal but does a lot for emissions.
It is a device that is added to the cable expressly for high
frequency suppression, either picked up or emitted.

[H] Delete Users in XP

2008-11-28 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Actually not so simple as it sounds.

Installed XP, fully upgraded and not noticing, stayed in administrator
login as I installed programs. Some programs were smarter than
others, the upshot is that when I did create a new user, despite that
user being part of administrators, half the programs don't show up.
S, short of installing the programs over again, I've been
laboriously logging in each time as administrator. Login screen only
has new user, have to cntl-alt-del twice to get logged in as
administrator. Would like to either figure a way to get the programs
moved over to the new account or delete the new account.

Tried various things, no joy yetany ideas?

Thanks...Steve

Lost 3 days on this new computer because I thought that I'd try Vista,
mainly based on a newletter I get that had a whole article wondering
why people are still bashing Vista because SP1 solved 'all' the
problems. For me, Vista sucks. Many many reasons, most of which
relate to the new philosophy behind the Vista interface. Plus, on the
whole, the system felt slow, I found myself avoiding using it. I
figured I could probably tweak it so that I'd use it, but why waste my
time when I can just install XP?

[H] Double-click not working

2008-12-12 Thread Steve Tomporowski
This is an installation of XP that I recently had to fight off a
malware attack, although I don't know if this problem is because of it
or predated it.

My video files are associated with KMplayer. If a double-click a file
from explorer, nothing happens. If I right-click and select 'open
with' it works. Has anyone run into this before. I checked the file
association and they are fine. What I realize now is that I don't
know if it's the same with other file types or whether they work on
double-click.

Suggestions?

Thanks...Steve

The malware infection: One day I came back to my computer and it was
at the EULA screen of Homesite, a realty program. I cancelled and
just went about my business. The next day on turn-on, the same screen
came up. Upon investigation, I found two suspicious files in the root
of each hard drive: autorun.exe and autorun.inf. Neither could be
deleted. Ran spybot in safe mode, it claimed to have removed the
infection but did not, it came back. Ran Malwarebyte's Malware
remover in safe mode and that did remove everything. Even the trojan
that kept the infection coming back. No, I'm not pandering for
Malwarebyte, just letting you know what worked. Disappointed that
Spybot did not.

Re: [H] Double-click not working

2008-12-15 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Okay, solved the problem. Somehow KMplayer seems to have lost it's
settings, so going into options, changing random stuff, clicking OK,
changing it back, seems to have worked.

I do have one odd artifact which I think began after the malware
removal. Every once in a while, when emptying the recycle bin,
explorer restarts, e.g. the screen goes black and then the taskbar
reappears. When this happens, several of the systray icons disappear.

Any ideas?

[H] HTPC - Which Software?

2008-12-16 Thread Steve Tomporowski
I have an older computer that is being dedicated to playing videos &
TV. Happauge card (PVR-150) installed. I'm not really happy with the
WinTV2000 software (WinTV, with this card, refuses to see any
channels), so the question becomes, which HTPC software should I use?
A remote came with the PVR-150, and I'd like to fully use that. Right
now, if I go full screen with WinTV2000, the up/dn channel selector
stops working, although I can punch in numbers. Just wondering what
others are using. The system is currently running WinXP.

[H] A Long Way for a Webcam

2008-12-22 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Here's the situation. I have a Microsoft Lifecam (USB) that is far
enought away to required 50 foot of cable to get to the computer. Due
to various restrictions, neither the computer nor the camera can be
moved. The camera will work with two 15 foot extentions, but will not
work with one more. If a hub is inserted, that does not help, in fact
the webcam will not work with a hub at all. Other than moving the
computer closer to the 30 ft limit (not counting the 6 foot cable on
the Webcam), I don't have any ideas. I'm open to suggestions. Is
there a better way to do this? The local Best Buy doesn't have
anything other than USB webcams. I've also tried a logitech webcam
and it has more problems than the Microsoft.

How can I get this done?

ThanksSteve

Re: [H] A Long Way for a Webcam

2009-01-01 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Just as way of an update, I bought two USB repeater cables from Newegg
at $10 each and had to use both, but I'm now up and running. Webcam
resolution still sucks. Additional note, I found that I had a bad
cable. It'll work fine with a mouse, but won't work with a webcam.
Found that a little strange

Happy and Prosperous New Year to all on the list!

Re: [H] HTPC - Which Software?

2009-01-04 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Okay, so I took all this fine advice and began the journey

It started with KMplayer, which can run the TV. Problems: Needs
something to interface the remote and there are plenty of motion
artifacts. However, switching channels via the keyboard was lightning
fast.

I had only two requirements: Watch Live TV fullscreen and be able to
use the Hauppauge remote. Little was I to understand that even those
two requirements are shooting too high...

I had previously encountered GBPVR. Did some research and thought
that maybe I could get the remote to work with it using HIP. HIP has
plenty of interfaces but none for the hauppauge. Addtionally, there
is a steep learning curve for GBPVR because they seldom explain their
acronyms or their settings: "Set XQFD: The place where you set your
XQFD to DFE or PZQ". Makes lots of sense.

Next stop: SageTV. I tried them because they supported my TV card
(Hauppauge HVR-1600) and the remote. Setup was almost easy. Problem
#1: For the Electronic Program Guide, which is required, entering my
zip code did not give me anything close to CT. They thought I was in
Wileyville, PA. Tried it twice. I just scanned for all the channels
on the TV card and began to sort through them. I got exactly 11
channel changes before it would lock up. Tried twice, then gave up
sorting and went directly to finishing the setup. In operation,
channel changing is glacially slow. Then again, a certain number of
channel changes and it locks up. Followed all the advice about
updating drivers with no improvement. It is now almost two weeks
since I left a message on the forum with no response. Uninstalled
Sage TV.

Media Portal: Simple easy install. Too easy. Left it to install on
its own, came back and it was finished. Tried to follow startup
advice. TV services settings were not accessible. Double-clicking
the icon resulted in a box asking if I wanted to start TV services.
Yes or no resulted in going back to desktop with nothing else
happening. Starting Media Portal gave me a live TV blank screen and
no channels. Uninstalling and reinstalling TV services resulted in
something different: I would getting endless warnings that TV
services was not installed. Every OK gave me another of the same box.
After searching the forums, found that SageTV uses certain services
that I may have eliminated from my lean install of XP. What services?
We can't tell you since different plug-ins require different
services. Uninstalled Media Portal.

Beyond TV: Installed easily. Virtually no setup. Uses Hauppauge
Remote. Image quality is fine. Uh, huh? But where's the
problems

Working for about a day now with no issues. I think you can guess my
recommendation.;-)

2009-01-05 Thread Steve Tomporowski
What's vmc? I was going by the recomendations in this thread, I don't
think that came up. Meedio was also recommended but I pretty much
stopped when I got something that actually worked.
