RE: [ha-Safran]: Good challenge - Finnish Jewish composer

2005-02-15 Thread Miller, Philip
It would have been remarkable for a Jew to live in Finland in the 17-18th
century as Finland at that time was a province of Sweden, and Jews were
precluded from living there. Jews only established a presence there in the
mid-19th century, and even then had to petition the Tsarist government for
permission.

I'd love to be wrong, and if anyone knows better, please correct me!

Maybe the name you want is Moses Pergament, but the time frame is
off. The Grove Dictionary gives his dates as (b Helsinki, 21 Sept 1893; d
Gustavsberg, nr Stockholm, 5 March 1977).

Grove says: ...some of his most important works treat Jewish themes and
are partly influenced by Hebrew cantillation. Den judiska sången (1944) is
a central work, and the orchestral Rapsodia ebraica, written in protest at
the massacres under the Nazis and parodying Deutschland über alles, is
another Jewish-inspired piece.

[ha-Safran]: Good challenge - Finnish composer

2005-02-15 Thread Talya Pardo
Hello all,

Wow, I never expected to have so many answers waiting for me this morning -
but of course nothing less than the best from this list serv!

I think we may have hit on the answer - as we all know, a reference
question doesn't always have the right lead info. But it looks like
Harriet Lacksten in Sweden has gotten as close as possible to who we are
looking for:

There was a Finnish-Swedish jewish composer called Moses Pergament, but he
lived 1893-1977. He composed music with Jewish themes as well as some
liturgical music.

(and I got a quick lesson in Finnish Jewish history, lol).

Thank you very much to everyone who took the time and contributed!
all the best,

[ha-Safran]: Defining What is Jewish

2005-02-15 Thread Eli Wise
I agree that we are not to judge what is appropriately Jewish in general.
Am I to understand there is no basic definition in AJL for what is
appropriately Jewish. If this is the case what is purpose of the
organization and the book recommendations it makes? People look to a
professional organization for standards of what to purchase. It is true
that each institution collects according to its individual guidelines, but
are we to say that AJL has no guidelines? Is the purpose of the AJL to be a
clearinghouse for anything and everything without regard to cultural and
religious ramifications? AJL serves a wide spectrum of Jewish institutions
and philosophies, are we now facing the same battle as the outside world
for the heart and soul of Jewish literature? It is very disturbing that a
professional librarian who may look to AJL for advice and suggestions has
to practice, let the buyer beware. Many of the comments to my post clearly
show that AJL is not an even playing field. Sensitivity for philosophy and
outlook should exist on both the right and left side of the aisle.

Re: [ha-Safran]: James' Howe's book

2005-02-15 Thread Fredisaac
Rose's question is important, and I think it might be a possible discussion
point for a future Convention panel.

My own sense is that there are 2 pieces:
1, Whether non-Jewish books are appropriate in Jewish settings,
particularly small synagogue libraries
2. Whether there is a library that specifically collects books
showing external views of Jews and our lives, rituals, etc.

1. Because of the small amount of money available to many synagogue
libraries from year to year, it is most important to acquire the best books
from inside the Jewish world. The more money (and in some cases space)
is available, the wider the library can range in acquisitions. If the
books are good and/or important, they need to be in the libraries.

2. I don't know of anyplace that specifically has those books. I assume
places like the larger Bureaus and the JECC in Cleveland would acquire
them, but don't encourage their patrons to use them.

Finally, with regard to Kaddish for Grandpa, the issue of encouraging
interfaith families to discuss the issues seems an important
one. Regrettably, the book adds to the confusion, especially as it is
geared toward younger kids. To the extent that it raises all of the
concerns, and makes us as professionals aware of them, it has done a great job.

I checked the Mission Goals section of the AJL
website.

Under Mission :

The Association fosters access to information,
learning, teaching and research relating to Jews,
Judaism, the Jewish experience and Israel.

[Jews, Judaism and the Jewish experience are
undefined]

Under Goals :

4. Facilitate and encourage establishment of Judaica
library collections.

[Judaica library collection is undefined]

So, I think the answer is No, Eli, there is no basic
definition in AJL of what is appropriately Jewish.

Hypothetically, Eli, what definition would you
recommend for us to adopt?

There can't be a basic definition for what is Jewish
because there is no one authority recognized by all
Jews as having the power to define Judaism. Kaplan
said that Judaism is a civilization. Some say it's a
religion. I remember someone describing himself as a
stomach Jew (he was born Jewish and liked corned
beef). Where does Workman's Circle fit in all this? Or
secular Israeli Jews?

In other words, coming up with a basic definition
would be difficult. Another question to ask is do we
need a basic definition?

RE: [ha-Safran]: Defining what is Jewish

2005-02-15 Thread Marga Hirsch
Hevre,
The title Kaddish for Grandpa in the Name of Jesus Amen is most
unfortunate - I can't understand how an editor allowed it - but the book
in no way encourages intermarriage. On the contrary, it supports
conversion. The father in the book converted to Judaism. He is Jewish.
He is a partner in a Jewish marriage, not an intermarriage. I assume
that if the author and editor had titled the book Two Services for
Grandpa, it would be easier to buy.
