[ha-Safran]: English language libraries in Jerusalem
Friends of libraries, Anglo-in Jerusalem: I received several responses regarding my previous question, posted on the Judaic librarian listserv, HASAFRAN, about English language libraries for the Anglo community in Jerusalem. I am wondering if those who are interested would want to meet for a conversation about this on Friday morning/early afternoon on July 29th around to talk libraries? (Exact time and place to be determined) ? Would it be worthwhile to talk about a project devoted to increasing visibility, use, services and resources for the English speaking community ? What are your thoughts and ideas? Please share this email with others who have a strong value about libraries and who may want to be a part of the conversation. I have always played around with the vision of an English language library in Jerusalem and I have never fully understood or spoken with someone who could tell me if there is an English language library in Jerusalem that works in a similar fashion to those public libraries in the US and offers itself as a cultural hub of activity and events: author talks, book clubs, family story time events. I am looking for information related to this and would like to have some conversations with people who may find this an interesting idea and pursuit. Exploratory stage. I have strong experience in initiating and developing this type of Library and I am interested in being in Jerusalem. I will be in Israel, and specifically in Jerusalem from Friday July 29th through Monday August 1. If I need to be there Tuesday August 2 for a conversation I am happy to make myself available on that day as well. I would like to hear from people about this and do not want to step on toes either. My email is abigailyas...@gmail.com I will also post this letter to the Association of Jewish Libraries listserv with the hope of finding out more from colleagues in Jerusalem. Jews are People of the Book and we as Jews and librarains love to think of it as that we are great readers and lovers of books, all books! The book referred to is one book and it is our Bible, nothing more nothing less. From the Koran-tolerance for those people of the book, like Jews and Christians. [ha-Safran]: Curious to know
Hello friends and colleagues: I wish you all a successful conference in July in Seattle. I wanted to let you know, if you don't already, about an interesting and exciting development in the world of Jewish books. Perhaps you have already seen the 1st issue of the Jewish Review of Books. It is a quarterly publication. I am hoping that the publisher saw fit to make sure that the Jewish Review of Books is available for you to preview at the conference. I am curious to know if any of my colleagues and friends have started to read it and use it as a selection/acquisition tool. I It is worth a look and do check out the ARTS section too. It has a piece about the popular Israeli television show called Srugim (the title refers to a particular style of kippah worn by Modern Orthodox men.) The series follows a group of 30-somethings who are trying to find their way through romance, work, etc. in a particular neighborhood of Jerusalem. I am sure the academic librarians will be interested in its reviews and criticism of books and ideas. I am enjoying my copy. At any rate enjoy the conference in Seattle! [ha-Safran]: status of my children's picture
Friends and Colleagues: Many of you have asked about the status of my children's picture book. Thanks for asking! This picture book, written by my husband Joe Lipner and me, is a 32 page book written in verse that gives expression to the spirit and times of Woodstock, the music festival that took place in August 1969 on my cousin Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel NY. As it is a picture book, the story is driven by lush, dynamic narrative illustrations by artist Barbara Mendes. The 40th anniversary of Woodstock is August 2009, so it is with great hope and anticipation that the book will be in my hands by early November of 2008. I took this project on to fill the need for a picture book about Woodstock and in particular about my cousin Max who showed the value of welcoming strangers to his land. he is the hero of the book. There are other types of books about Woodstock. A week doesn't go by when I do not hear from someone Are you related to Max Yasgur, ya know the guy from Woodstock? And I am proud to respond that Yes, he is my son! (our son is named in his memory) and Yes he was my cousin. A month doesn't go by without a reference to Woodstock in the newspaper somewhere around the world. Just yesterday in the NYTimes in the Arts section there was a music book review by Stephen Holden and the first paragraph cites the Woodstock Festival and the article goes onto speak about Joni Mitchell who wrote the Woodstock song that includes the line...goin' down to Yasgur's farm... So...please everyone, in the interest of my building the infrastructure around the book for distribution and sales, help me...go to www.maxsaidyes.com and email me from there that you are interested in the book. All the best for a groovy summer! Peace. Dear Friends and Colleagues: I am excited to be coming to Cleveland again for the conference this summer. This is a question for anybody in Cleveland AJL or anybody on the list who may have the following information: I am looking for a contact at the Rock Roll Hall of Fame. [ha-Safran]: DVD/VHS shelf life
I have posted several times regarding the shelf life of VHS /DVD ...I wanted to share the following links. Does anybody use the spray? Abigail http://manifest-tech.com/media_dvd/hard_coat.htm http://www.libraryvideo.com/articles/article15.asp A second solution is a preventive shield spray that is widely used by rental shops and outlets. Quick Shield by CD-Playwright is one example of an all-in-one sealer, protectant and cleaner. There is a patented formula for new media that seals the surface so it can be circulated ready to resist the effects of patron handling. There is a second formula that serves as a routine cleaner/protectant. It adds a protective layer that increases the disc's scratch resistance while keeping the disc clean and functional. Both solutions are laser neutral, meaning that they can't affect the reflectivity of the laser. Re: [ha-Safran]: School Library Effectiveness Does NOT Make
Keep speaking, a film is good, spread the word, etc. but from my perspective nothing beats just being out there (if you've got the personality for it, to push the Library agenda) it means networking and collaborating and building relationships with many other institutions so they notice when you are NOT at the table. It has to mean being willing to explore a future without books and libraries as we know them, because that idea is on the table. Re: [ha-Safran]: VHS in libraries
Andrea this is a very good question and one I would like to discuss with added component of the following observation I have made as it relates to DVD and VHS. I am finding that the shelf life of VHS is so much longer than the DVDs. VHS is generally a ore robust medium, compared to the DVD which is more sensitive and fragile. I have looked into leeves and condoms that are supposed to add protection to the DVD, but the inquiries and reading I have done on this seem to support the fact that, it is truly difficult to mke sure the DVD is returned in good condition and ready for use by another patron. The VHS on the other hand can circulate numerous times throughout the years and hold up very well. I am curious if others have made a similar observation, and perhaps others have come across THE way to ensure DVD shelf life. Andrea it is ironic that the very show you want to transfer from video to dvd is one on ethics. This is a copyright question and AJL may want to consult with a copyright attorney. Re: [ha-Safran]: ALA creates Jewish book award
Hello Friends: This is awesome news. And perhaps our President would make a call or send a note, to the ALA President acknowledging that this award is a wonderful thing, and have a conversation about how it all came about. This could further the relationship with ALA. I know many of us are members of AJL and ALA! Perhaps we could begin a relationship with the generous Brody family, by writing a note of thanks and acknowledgement, also informing them a little bit about AJL, its mission, its awards, enclosing some appealing literature would be value added too. Re: [ha-Safran]: Jewish film group
The Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles facilitated a summer film group a few summers ago. The Library jump started the group by advertising in the local Jewish press, the dates times and titles of films to be viewed. and the fact that it was free. It was a remarkable series because for each film screened a random person who saw what the film was called me ahead of time and said something like the following: for The Front: I am planning to attend the evening, I was a blacklisted writer, may I introduce the movie. for The Port of Last Resort: My parents grew up in Shanghai.May I introduce the movie and talk about Jewish life in Shanghai and share some photos? For every one person who called the Library to ask to be a part of the program, there were at least 5 more people in the audience who were closely connected to the theme or subject of the film.AND Jewish Heritage Video Collection: If you or a nearby institution own the Jewish Heritage Video Collection, that wonderful resource comes with a series of notebooks that are organized by themes and topics and suggest viewing and discussion of particular movies within the collection. If you are interested in this and a JHVC does not exist close to you the Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles would be delighted to work with you and loan you materials for this type of film group. Call my assistant Sally Hyam (323.761.8644) after Pesach during the first week of May, to speak about arrangements, policies and to get an idea of the collection and its notebooks. [ha-Safran]: Our friend Rita Frischer
Yossi: So many in Hasafran and AJL have grown to love Rita Frischer and her husband Jerry. They have lovingly and tirelessly devoted these past few years to the following project and it would be wonderful if colleagues and friends from AJL and Hasafran knew about it. Rita and Jerry lost a grand daughter several years ago... and that's what Annie's Playground project is all about. Thank you for sharing. Abigail Yasgur, Director Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles promoting Jewish literacy June 3, 2004 Dear Friends and Family, We would like to let everyone know that Annie's Playground is finally going to be constructed in Seattle this summer! We want to thank all of you for your loving support over the two and a half years since this project began. Jerry and I are glad to be renting here in Seattle for now, so we're on hand and able to help the Friends of Annie's Playground to get the job done. We'd like to share with you some of the exciting plans for the new playground. There will be colorful play equipment for kids of all ages, including lots of swings, high slides, monkey bars, and a merry-go-round. In keeping with the playground's Northwest Wildlife theme, there will also be exploration caves and nature-inspired tile art, including a heron-shaped bench with outstretched wings. If you'd like to see what the new playground will look like, just go to www.anniesplayground.org and click on Playground Plans. It was your generosity at the very beginning that convinced Seattle Parks that the playground should be renovated. Since then, enthusiastic community fundraising, a Department of Neighborhoods matching grant, plus additional grants, have made Annie's Playground a reality. City equipment began grading on June 1st. Our work parties are scheduled to start on July 9th and continue for the next four weekends. Community volunteers will be installing equipment, placing tiles under the supervision of our professional artist, and spreading wood chip surfacing. Members of the community have committed to a total of at least 2,000 volunteer hours! If you'd like to help and you can't come to Seattle for the work parties, please consider making an additional contribution to help pay for the professional artwork and refreshments for the work party volunteers. Any left over money will go into a fund for continued maintenance and upkeep of the playground. You can send your contribution check, made out to Friends of Annie's Playground, to: Tammie Conder, Volunteer Coordinator Friends of Annie's Playground at Meadowbrook 3047 NE 98th Street Seattle WA 98115. Our Tax ID Number is 51-0170717. Thank you again for your help, your compassion, and your friendship. The dedication date hasn't been set yet, but you will be among the first to know. [ha-Safran]: JCLLA annual nationwide summer reading club
Friends and Colleagues: Read, be read to, or read to.. Once again the Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles lovingly invites all communities in North America and B E Y O N D to have their congregations, classes, families, camps, etc. participate in the annual nationwide summer reading club. The club is specifically designed for the Early Childhood set (beginning 3-4 years old) through 11-12 yr. olds! Read 6 appropriate level Jewish themed books over the summer, send in the list and receive a certificate and prize. If a teacher or librarian reads to a class of 20 kids..it counts for every kid. If a sibling reads to a sibling, it counts for both of the kids. It's a piece of cake to do.
