THE BOOK Sabar, Yona, translated from Hebrew and Neo-Aramaic Sources with introduction and notes by. "The Folk Literature of the Kurdistani Jews: An Anthology." New Haven, Yale University Press, 1982. First Edition. Octavo in dust jacket, xlii, 250 pp., map, list of abbreviations, glossary, selected bibliography, indexes. Hardbound. Very Good. Yale Judaica Series Volume XXIII. Ariel Sabar wrote eloquently about his father Yona Sabar and his efforts to preserve the language and literary creativity of the Kurdistani Jews in the recent, " My Father's Paradise: A Son's Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq." This collection is the most accessible version of the material that the elder Sabar's work available to non-Hebrew readers. "Yona Sabar, himself a Kurdistani Jew, offers representative selections from the types of Kurdistani literature: epic re-creations of biblical stories, midrashic legends, folktales about local rabbis, moralistic anecdotes, fold songs, nursery rhymes, sayings, and proverbs. Sabar's introduction and notes are a storehouse of information on the history and spiritual life of the Kurdistani Jews and on their relationship to the Land of Israel. Because almost all the Kurdistani Jews now live in Israel and speak Hebrew, there is very little new literary activity in their Neo-Aramaic dialects. This delightful anthology captures the essence of Kurdistani Jewish literature, presenting it for public enjoyment and preserving it for the future." from the book jacket. Octavo in dust jacket, viii, 343 pp., b/w illustrations, notes, index. Hardbound. Very Good. "Medicine played an important role in the early secularization and eventual modernization of German Jewish culture. And as both physicians and patients Jews exerted a great influence on the formation of modern medical discourse and practice. This fascinating book investigates the relationship between German Jews and medicine from medieval times until its demise under the Nazis. John Efron examines the rise of the German Jewish physician in the Middle Ages and his emergence as a new kind of secular, Jewish intellectual in the early modern period and beyond. The author shows how nineteenth-century medicine regarded Jews as possessing distinct physical and mental pathologies, which in turn led to the emergence in modern Germany of the "Jewish body" as a cultural and scientific idea. He demonstrates why Jews flocked to the medical profession in Germany and Austria, noting that by 1933, 50 percent of Berlin's and 60 percent of Vienna's physicians were Jewish. He discusses the impact of this on Jewish and German culture, concluding with the fate of Jewish doctors under the Nazis, whose assault on them was designed to eliminate whatever intimacy had been built up between Germans and their Jewish doctors over the centuries." from the Yale Press website. (From the rear cover.) The high point of Lissitzky's specifically Jewishly oriented work. What is most notable about this body of work is the attraction that Lissitzky had for what was pleasurable in Jewish observance and practice. In addition to the cover illustrations there is a full page color illustration for each of the twelve verses of "Had Gadya," the giddy, rauchous, silly and mystical song that concludes most Haggadot and Seders. Quarto in dust jacket, 198 pp., b/w illustrations throughout, contributors, notes, contributor and art list. Hardbound. Very Good. Ro, Ronin. "Tales to Astonish: Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and the American Comic Book Revolution." New York, Bloomsbury, 2004. First American Edition. ISBN: 1-58234-345-4. Octavo in dust jacket, 298 pp. Hardbound. Very Good. The Golden Age of Comics was a very Jewish product. Kirby created his first great character, Captain America, in 1940. What was most interesting about comics in the 50s was Jewish although the profits were elsewhere. In the 60s and 70s Lee and Kirby rejuvenated the idea of Superheroes. In the 1970s the Kirby went his separate way creating his underappreciated "New Gods" series. Ronin Ro tries to give a fuller picture of Kirby's career, and insights into a personal life which seems to have rarely strayed far from the demands of his drawing board. Churning out 15 pages a week is considered superhuman in the world of the superhero comics, but Kirby kept to a regime like that for decades, working late hours and sleeping until noon, ultimately producing an estimated 25,000 pages in his lifetime. Linda G. Arntzenius $21.99 Founded in 1930, the Institute for Advanced Study was conceived of high ideals for the future of America and its system of higher education, and was made possible by sibling philanthropists Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld. Guided by education expert Abraham Flexner, the Bambergers created an independent institution devoted to the pursuit of knowledge. The Institute for Advanced Study opened its arms to scholars "without regard to race, creed, or sex." It provided a haven for Jewish intellectuals fleeing Nazi Germany, including Albert Einstein, who remained on the permanent faculty until his death in 1955, and became the intellectual home of such luminaries as J. Robert Oppenheimer, John von Neumann, Kurt Gödel, Marston Morse, Oswald Veblen, Hermann Weyl, Homer A. Thompson, Erwin Panofsky, George F. Kennan, Clifford Geertz, and Freeman Dyson. "Jewish Pioneers of the Black Hills Gold Rush " SD. Ann Haber Stanton $21.99 The very name Deadwood conjures up vivid Wild West images: saloons with swinging doors, brazen dance-hall girls, buckskin-clad Calamity Jane roaming the streets with her erstwhile paramour, Wild Bill Hickok. The setting is the lawless Dakota Territory of 1876 at the start of the Black Hills gold rush, a stampede for the golden pay dirt. One would hardly expect to find a Jewish pioneer grocer named Jacob Goldberg in this scene, yet Deadwood's story is incomplete without Goldberg. And Goldberg's story is incomplete without either Calamity Jane or Wild Bill. Not just Goldberg, but Finkelstein (also known as Franklin), Stern (also known as Star), Jacobs, Schwarzwald, Colman, Hattenbach, and many other Jews joined the throngs. The Jews provided much more than overalls, chamberpots, and the chambers in which to put them. They also became the mayors, legislators, and civic leaders who helped bring sense and stability to this unruly expanse. Those of you who, as I did, were excited by the portrayal of the Jewish mechant in the HBO Series 'Deadwood' the truth of an even more Jewish Deadwood will prove an added pleasure. "The New York City Triangle Factory Fire" NY. Leigh Benin, Rob Linne, Adrienne Sosin, Joel Sosinsky, HBO Documentary Films $21.99 Through historic images, "The New York City Triangle Factory Fire" honors the victims' sacrifice and serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for the dignity of all working people. "Vitebsk: The Life of Art." New Haven, Conn., Yale University Press, 2007. Quarto in dust jacket, xx, 391 pp., frontispiece map, b/w and color photos and illustrations, Appendix: Students at the Vitebsk School of Art, notes, selected bibliography, index. Hardbound. Translated into English from the original Russian by Katherine Foshko Tsan. "This book examines the artistic life of Vitebsk during the years 1917-1922, when a great burst of creative experimentation transformed the modest Russian town into one of the most influential gateways to the art of the twentieth century. Spurred by native son Marc Chagall, who returned home after the October Revolution in 1917 to take the position of art commissioner, Vitebsk rose to a pinnacle of fame as an artistic laboratory for the avant-garde. It was here that such luminaries as El Lissitzky, Yuri Pen, Kazimir Malevich, Nikolai Suetin, Mikhail Bakhtin, and others worked, inspired one another, and made distinctive contributions to modernism. Art historian Aleksandra Shatskikh surveys the entire "Vitebsk phenomenon," drawing on an array of archives in Russia and Amsterdam, many of which have never been open to Western scholars. She discusses Chagall's Academy of Art and its major teachers and students; the founding of the artists' group, UNOVIS; Malevich's architectural experiments; Bakhtin's circle; and important developments in theater and music in Vitebsk. With more than two hundred outstanding illustrations, the book brings Vitebsk to life at a fascinating and transformative moment in art history" from the flaps of the dust jacket. Quarto, paper covers, 99 pp., b/w and color illustrations, list of ornamented bags, glossary, select bibliography. Softbound. Very Good. Quarto, paper covers, 80 pp., b/w and color illustrations, list of binders, map, glossary, select bibliography. Softbound. Very Good. One of the few works on this subject. Torah binders or wimpels are textiles made from the cloth which covers the new-born male during the circumcision ceremony. This is largely a phenomenon of the Jews of the German speaking lands. These cloths were cut into (usually) narrow ribbons and embroidered with a notice of the details of the birth and with decorative illustrations and designs. They were then used as a cinch to tie the two sides of the Torah scroll together when the Torah was placed back into the ark. (29397) $18.00 Eis, Ruth. "Twenty-Five Years Judah L. Magnes Museum." [ha-Safran]: FS: Jewish Community Histories from Arcadia Press
Many of you are familiar with the sepia toned covers of Arcadia Publishings books on local communities. There are now quite a few on Jewish communities. Fred Isaac recently published a volume in the series, "Jews of Oakland and Berkeley," and feels that these are good solid books for Jewish libraries. At his urging I attempted to exhibit them at the AJL conference in Seattle. However, a number of Snafus with the publisher at the time sunk that plan. In my experience, people get very excited about these books. They not only identify with the place where they live, but also places where they and members of their families have lived, making it worthwhile to include communities outside of your local area in your collection. Below is a list of the volumes in the series that I currently stock. These are offered at a 20% discount off of the retail prices listed below. US Shipping is $2.00 for one book. US Shipping is free for orders of two or more titles. Foreign shipping is at cost. We ship and bill to libraries and institutions. Individuals must prepay. Call 415-831-3228 or email to reserve. Re: [ha-Safran]: "Shop That Speaks Yiddish Needs a Rich Man's Help"
Dear Mr. Hoberman, Rachel and fellow Safranists, In the note that Mr. Hoberman write and Rachel posted to our list Mr. Hoberman posits that he may be venting and I certainly hope that his overall thoughts are more moderate. I would like to parse the statements of Joseph Berger, the author of the NYT's article, a little differently. The question is: how can these two statements be reconciled: 1) The survival of Yiddish in America is an on-the-one-hand, on-the-other-hand story. Yiddish, once the language of the Jews of Eastern Europe, is undoubtedly moribund, with its last full-throated speakers, Holocaust survivors, now well into their 80s and 90s. and 2) On the other hand, the language is booming among Hasidim, for whom it is a lingua franca, mushrooming so prolifically that by some estimates the ultra-Orthodox will form a majority of American Jews by century's end. Yiddish, the language of the Jews of Eastern Europe is moribund. There are few if any living authors who could write or speak in Yiddish that is specific to the geographic particularities as specified in a linguistic atlas of European Yiddish. The only exceptions to this are those Soviet or Soviet immigrant speakers of Yiddish still in the former Soviet Union or in the post-Soviet dispersion who are speaking Yiddish (at my synagogue I experience the dissonance of accent between former Muscovites and former Odessans). These are the author's "full-throated speakers." The production of literature from this population is minimal and undistinguished. Its communicative capabilities are contracting. This is a moribund language. Kal ve-homer to American Yiddish productivity that derived from that tradition. The ultra-Orthodox community is the locus of increased Yiddish demographic representation. The printed production in the ultra community is comprised of translations of Hebrew seforim into Yiddish, internal sectarian documents, "kosher" fiction, textbooks and weekly and monthly periodicals. While it is a source of new Yiddish speakers (I was taken aback the first time I saw a five year old speaking fluent Yiddish) the Haredi Yiddish is a different Yiddish. It may grow up to be something important in time. It is part of circumscribed tri-lingualism of Yiddish, English and (Yeshivish) Hebrew. As a spoken language it is not moribund and as a written language it is not entirely moribund. But ultimately it point the direction away from Yiddish towards something more like Judeo-English (not at all to be confused with Yinglish), a distinct separatist linguistic phenomenon resident in the English speaking and anglophone Jewish world. Berger of the Times, makes a prediction about the haredi community that places them as the future majority among American Jews and includes Hasidim in the short list of groups that patronize CYCO. I am sceptical about Berger's demographics. A lot can happen in ninety years. However, my frustration with the Haredi community and Yiddish is that they ignore, abhor, or are ignorant of what is in already available in Yiddish. The Yiddish literature Hasid is generally unaware of the important and diverting (and "Kosher") works on Hasidism in Yiddish by Menashe Ungar, Samuel Hirsh Setzer and B. Justman. As time passes the haredi version of Yiddish, as it evolves new grammar and vocabulary, will make the works of the "older" Yiddish authors seem less and less accessible. Berger is not wrong in fearing that this community will not support the type of books CYCO has. The disappearance of a community oriented around these books will be a sad thing. It may be impossible to resist in the long run, but the effort is worthwhile. I don't perceive any negative bias in Berger's article toward Hasidim and find it unfair to chastise him for such. If the challenges that CYCO faces were only the challenges that face Yiddish CYCO would have much better prospects. That is a subject I could discuss with anyone who is interested and would be glad at some other time and in some other place. I for one am grateful to Mr. Berger for the time and effort that he has put in to bringing the current situation at CYCO to a larger audience. There is such a thing as bad publicity for Yiddish, but Mr. Berger's article is anything but. Idel's aim is to point out the many instances where Jewish thinkers resorted to concepts of sonship and their conceptual backgrounds, and thus to show the existence of a wide variety of understandings of hypostatic sons in Judaism. Hanover, New Hampshire, Brandies University Press, published by University Press of New England, 2003. First Edition. ISBN: 12-58465-049-4. Large square quarto in dust jacket, color frontispiece (detail from Kitaj's 'The Painter (Cross and Chimney)'), x, 163 pp., color plates throughout, a few b/w photos, notes, index. Hardbound. Very Good. "Their work reflects profound historical and cultural issues, such as what it means to be a Jewish artist in the western tradition of Christian art, and what it means, as Jews, to be painters of the specifically American experience. Ori Soltes focuses primarily on the work of 20th-century Jewish painters to explore themes ranging from the trials of immigration, depictions of urban life and politics, renderings of the Holocaust, and the reconstitution of Judaism in recent years by feminist painters and Soviet emigrĂ©e artists. The astonishing array of work represented in this book sometimes displays overtly Jewish themes and symbols; other paintings are included for their importance in the general development of 20th-century painting. Balancing individual biographies of painters, stylistic analysis, and thematic interpretations, Soltes offers a remarkable survey of 20th-century American Jewish painting. Despite the diverse range of images, themes, a common thread among most of these paintings is the concept of tikkun olamÂof repairing or fixing the world. Most of the artists represented here demonstrate an interest in the social, as well as the aesthetic, import of their work. We see this concern for social betterment in the urban paintings of the Soyer brothers, in the "political" paintings of Ben Shahn, in the Holocaust-inflected works of numerous artists, and in the more contemporary work of Joyce Ellen Weinstein decrying violence and racism." from UPNE web copy. Adventures in Yiddishland examines the transformation of Yiddish in the six decades since the Holocaust, tracing its shift from the language of daily life for millions of Jews to what the author terms a postvernacular language of diverse and expanding symbolic value. With a thorough command of modern Yiddish culture as well as its centuries-old history, Jeffrey Shandler investigates the remarkable diversity of contemporary encounters with the language. His study traverses the broad spectrum of people who engage with YiddishÂfrom Hasidim to avant-garde performers, Jews as well as non-Jews, fluent speakers as well as those who know little or no YiddishÂin communities across the Americas, in Europe, Israel, and other outposts of "Yiddishland." from UC web copy. Octavo in dust jacket, x, 300 pp., a few b/w illustrations, notes, bibliography, index. Hardbound. Very Good. "Yiddish and the Creation of Soviet Jewish Culture changes our perception of Jewish cultural history by giving voice to those pioneering activists who created a vibrant Yiddish culture in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. Empowered by the Soviet state and the Communist Party to create a secular culture for the "new" Soviet Jew, these activists sparked a cultural flowering in the official national language of Soviet Jews: Yiddish. The writers, artists, and intellectuals chronicled here founded Yiddish-language schools, wrote for Yiddish newspapers, published scholarly works, and dedicated themselves to an unprecedented burst of secular Jewish artistic and cultural expression. David Shneer explores the role these Jewish activists played within both Soviet and Jewish history. These activists deeply engaged widespread Jewish cultural trends of the era while simultaneously building the Soviet state and spreading its ideology. They were not passive objects of Soviet policies toward Jews, but rather they actively participated in the creation of these policies. Shneer shows how these activists were an integral part of twentieth-century Jewish history, and at the same time he addresses some of the painful truths about their involvement in the propagation of the Soviet system." We are glad to be able to offer copies of this recent title at a bargain price. In addition to other positive comment, it received a positive review in the most recent issue of the AJL quarterly. As an Am-Ha-Aretz I find it accessible which is another plus (for some). Giller, Pinchas. "Shalom Shar'abi and the Kabbalists of Beit El." New York, Oxford University Press, 2008. First Edition. Octavo in dust jacket, xii, 199 pp., notes, works cited, index. Hardbound. Very Good. "The Jerusalem kabbalists of the Beit El Yeshivah are the most influential school of kabbalah in modernity. The school is associated with the writings and personality of a charismatic eighteenth-century Yemenite Rabbi, Shalom Shar'abi, considered by his acolytes to be divinely inspired by the prophet Elijah. Shar'abi initiated what is still the most active school of mysticism in contemporary Middle Eastern Jewry. Today, this meditative tradition is rising in popularity not only in Jerusalem, but throughout the Jewish World. Pinchas Giller examines the characteristic mystical practices of the Beit El School. The dominant practice is that of ritual prayer with mystical "intentions," or kavvanot . The kavvanot themselves are the product of thousands of years of development and incorporate many traditions and bodies of lore. Giller examines the archaeology of the kavvanot literature, the principle aspect of which is the meditation on God's sacred names while reciting prayers, the development of particular rituals, and the innovative mystical and devotional practices of the Beit El kabbalists." publisher's description (50489) $22.00 postpaid within the US. $30.00 postpaid to Canada. $32.50 postpaid elsewhere. [ha-Safran]: Librarian Survey - Second Request
Dear Friends, At this year's AJL I presented a paper on state of the relationship between Jewish Librarians and Jewish Booksellers. I prepared a short survey and sent it out to a number of librarians back in June. I am rewriting the paper towards a final draft. If any of you who did not speak to me earlier would be so kind as to step forward now, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Every piece of data is helpful. I can email the fifteen question survey to you. In general I don't think it would take more than 10-15 minutes to look through. Thank you in advance. Re: [ha-Safran]: Advance uncorrected proof
Dear Steven, This is an interesting case, but I have to disagree with your idea of what the appropriate disposition of such a book should be. Reading through the thin veil as to which book you were referring to we can begin with the fact that this book was embargoed before publication. As so, it should not have been distributed or read without permission prior to the date of publication. This is a legal issue. After publication, the book becomes a very interesting and valuable book for librarians, literary/popular culture scholars and book collectors. Whether or not the author would approve of this version of the book being read and known is no barrier to interest. To stand on one side or the other of the issue is a value judgement I will not make. As there is nothing libelous or slanderous in the book as far as I know, any "harm" that the author might perceive is having the book seen is something authors need to live with. I think it would be a poor idea to destroy the book or hide it from public view. The purpose of my inquiry is to gather information about the state of relations between Jewish Libraries and their local new Jewish bookselling counterparts. I can email a copy of the questionnaire or conduct the survey on the phone. Please reply by email with a request for a copy of the form or with your phone number and a time that would be convenient for me to reach you. This survey should take about 5-15 minutes unless you have additional comments that you would want to add. I am interested in hearing from you even if you have no local new Jewish bookstore or if there is but you do not have any relationship with them (though the survey would be much abbreviated). [ha-Safran]: For Sale: Adiel by Shlomo DuNour
We offer copies of this title for $6.00 postpaid in the US, $16.00 postpaid outside the US. Winner of the 1999 JERUSALEM PRIZE FOR LITERATURE "Adiel" is a re-telling of the Old Testament story of the Bible, from the Creation of Adam and Eve through the ten generations that culminates with Noah and the Flood. It is told through the observations of Adiel, an angel, appointed by God and the Archangel Michael, whose responsibility it is to record the events of Man--a sort of protective angel of history. Utilizing the ancient forms of Midrash, the Jewish term for literary and creative Biblical exposition, it is a reflection on the place of man in the universe, and on good and evil. The angel Adiel is chosen to witness the tragedies of the ten generations of man. [ha-Safran]: FS: The Jews of Sing Sing by Ron Arons
Ron was by the house last week and asked me to help him with this title. I read it over the weekend and can recommend it highly. Ron is an active member of Jewish Gen and a hard working geneologist and general researcher. This book, described below, is not one of those "Jews in Sports," type books. Though readable and straight-forward it is a mountain of hard facts, hard because they are solid and hard because they are sometimes unpleasant to admit to about our community. It is helpful in showing just how much can come of geneological research. It is an important original work in the field of Jewish studies and in the field of Criminality. I am selling new copies for $22.95 postpaid (within the US. Overseas shipping quoted on request). Call 415-831-3228 or email to order a copy. Arons, Ron. "The Jews of Sing Sing: Gotham Ganster and Gonuvim." Fort Lee, New Jersey, Barricade Books, 2008. First Edition. ISBN: 978-1-56980-333-2. Octavo in dust jacket, xx, 350 pp., b/w photos, sources by chapter, index. Hardbound. As New. "If you learned that one of your ancestors served time at one of America's most infanous prisons, would you tel anyone or try to keep the information a secret? Ron Arons faced this dilemma a decade ago when he learned that his great-grandfather had done a "stretch" in Sing-Sing. Rather than suppress this story, he embarked on a journey to learn more about why his ancestor had committed crimes that landed him in jail. Soon after, Arons decided to expand upon the topic by exploring all Jews who served time in the famous prison "up the river" from Manhattan. Maybe it should come as no surprise, given the prison's proximity to Manhattan, that between 1880 and 1950, there were thousands of Jews behind bars at Sing Sing. The Jews of Sing Sing traces the histories of both famous gangsters and lesser-known gonuvim, exploring their childhoods and the lives of the people around them, as well [as] the impact they had on their descendants. These inmates were complex individuals who, on many levels, tried to live normal lives. Many exhibited a sense of humor and cunning, using aliases and teking imaginative steps to avoid law enforcement officials. The Jews of Sing Sing also reveals forgotten details surrounding many of the more well known gangsters, debunking many popular myths and showing their interconnectedness over the decades." from flap copy. Re: [ha-Safran]: AJL 2009 in Chicago - transportation
Dear Friends, I have been going to a convention that is held at the Hilton Towers annually for almost twenty years. I have always taken the train in from the airport. In fact, the first time I flew to Midway airport was the opening day for the Midway line. I rode free and got a free Danish to boot. The trip from Midway requires a transfer right before the loop and a walk of two or three blocks. From O'Hare I believe that the walk is the same distance. The neighborhood is pretty safe. Safer than when I first arrived in it all those years ago. Price is under $10.00. If you really like cabs you can take one from the train station. Re: [ha-Safran] statistics on Jewish book publishing in US
[This post self-edited with fire-extinguisher, but there may be some hot spots. Beware] Between 17-18 of these titles would be unsuitable, unacceptable or offensive in any Jewish library. This is not counting Kabbalah center productions and some other fairly venal narishkeit. The list is updated hourly which means that it in no way indicates which books have legs and which are just having a brief or very brief moment in the sun. All of the data that Amazon presents is the product of data mining. Clearly from my comments above, and more that others could make, Amazon's data-mining is not tweaked to serve the informational needs of the Jewish library community. It probably could be, but it is not. I understand the curiosity about the issues of the demographics of Book publishing. However, JEWISH book publishing is something that Amazon is only marginally associated with. Much of the important work in Jewish publishing is being done well below the radar of Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the other large players in the book trade. The people who do that work operate in an environment where the issue is more likely to be how to keep the ball rolling (getting the next important book out) rather that how to make an enormous return on investment to satisfy the shareholders. Link to images of rare Yiddish illustrated books
More adventures in "things found in the search for other things." The Yale libraries have an archive of digital images located at http://beinecke.library.yale.edu/dl_crosscollex/ A search under the keyword Yiddish brings of links of images, in most cases of the entire texts, of a number of beautiful and important Yiddish illustrated books. Treat yourself and take a look. Similarly a search under the keyword Hebrew turns up many other interesting images. It lists about two hundred publications from the Judah L Magnes Museum, The Spertus Museum, The Jewish Museum (New York), The Israel Museum, the Museum of Jewish Heritage and select items from a number of other institutions. There are a lot of great books listed that I'm sure would get plenty of use by the patrons of any Jewish library. [ha-Safran]: YIVO Publications - Announcing a Healthy New Catalog -
The YIVO Institute describes itself as, "the world's preeminent resource center for East European Jewish Studies; Yiddish language, literature and folklore; and the American Jewish immigrant experience. (see www.yivo.org)" On the 75th anniversary of the the YIVO Institute we offered a list of 75 YIVO publications. Five years later we are proud to offer what is certainly one of the largest selections of YIVO publications ever offered at one time and and in one place, Included are the many of the most important publications of YIVO in Vilna, New York and Buenos Aires as well as a few unusual imprints (from Melbourne, Australia and Stuttgart, Germany, etc.) and one possibly unique item. Items are in Yiddish, English, or both. Please take this opportunity to fill in the gaps in your holdings. It is unlikely that we will ever be able to match this current offering again. I am exhibiting at ALA and would like to have dinner with other AJLers. I talked with Brian Horowitz of the Tulane Jewish studies department and he is willing to speak about the current situation here for Jewish New Orleanians. It will be a kosher meal at a restaurant called Casablanca. The restaurant is not downtown but transportation can be arranged. I can be reached by phone in New Orleans at 414-407-1498 or you can drop by my booth in the Small Press area, booth #3728. Suzan Wynne was one of the founders of Gesher Galicia, the IAJGJ Special Interest Group focusing on Galician Jewry. (34786) I expect that this will be a basic book in it's area. FS: Zap! Bam! Pow! The Superhero 1938-1950. The Golden Age of Comic Books
We are happy to offer this fine catalog (now that we have stopped reading it and taken the time to catalog it). It was published by the William Bremen Jewish Heritage Museum and really is Judaica though the title forgets to make that point. Robinson, Jerry, Chabon, Michael and Feiffer, Jules, with contributions by. "Zap! Bam! Pow! The Superhero 1938-1950. The Golden Age of Comic Books." Atlanta, Georgia, The Bremen, The William Bremen Jewish Heritage Museum, 2004. ISBN: 0-9761534-0-8. Royal octavo, glossy paper covers, 61 pp., reproductions of color and b/w original art all reproduced in color. Softbound. Foreword by Jane D. Leavey. Articles are "The Ultimate Fantasy," by Jerry Robinson, "The Minsk Theory of Krypton," Jules Fieffer, "The Boys of Gotham," Jerry Robinson, and "A Postscript," by Michael Chabon. The Chabon contribution is in the form of a faux letter describing a fan's meeting with Clay and the widow of Cavalier at a comic book convention. This catalog which accompanies the exhibit by the same name (traveling in the summer of 2006 to the California State Fair) illustrates many pages of original comic book art from the Golden Age of comics. The text does not wear it's Jewish interest on its sleeve. However, Jane Leavey in her preface says, "In Jewish tradition, the phrase 'tikkun olam' is usually translated as repairing the world and encapsulates the role of humanity in society. It was the Super Heroes who took on that role from 1938 to 1950... Their exploits reflected the political, economic and social issues of the times. In a world dealing with economic depression and facing World War II, it was the Super Hero, whose alter ego was an ordinary person, who came to the rescue, righting the ills of the world and securing 'truth, justice and the American Way'!" Many of the drawings included, drawn by young New York Jews, show their Super Hero creations taking the fight to Goebbels and to Hitler himself, and that brings the point home with a punch. To elaborate on Dina Tanners helpful remarks: If you are searching for copies of books formerly published by Jason Aronson Rowman and Littlefield has taken over their catalog. You can search for Aronson titles by using the search window on their website which is at http://www.rowmanlittlefield.com However, not all of the Aronson titles that are available through R & L come up through the search. If the title you want does not come up then it is best to call them on the telephone. Their contact information for customer service is as follows: Toll free: (800) 462-6420, FAX: (800) 338-4550, <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>[EMAIL PROTECTED] . If the book really is out of print you can then proceed to search the metasearch engines for used and out of print books. These are http://www.addall.com/used and http://www.bookfinder.com Bookfinder will also bring up results for many new book sellers. At some point I will prepare my opinionated survey and advice on how to locate used and out of print books on the internet, but give these sites a try for now and you will start to learn it all for yourselves without my idiosyncratic observations. Of course, at any point along the line you could seek out the aid of a new and or used Judaica bookseller on or off this list. [ha-Safran]: FS: New Book on Russian Jewish Suprematist Architect
After a rocky period the Magnes Museum in Berkeley has managed to get its house in order. A recent exhibition has yielded the first Art monograph in some time. Price is postpaid within the US. Call 415-831-3228 or 415-407-1498 or email to reserve a copy for yourself or our institution. We ship and bill to libraries. SURVIVING SUPREMATISM Efimova, Alla. "Surviving Suprematism: Lazar Khidekel." Berkeley, California, Judah L. Magnes Museum, 2005. Square small quarto, glossy think paper covers with flaps, 92 pp., b/w photos and 34 color plates, chronology, key events in the Soviet Union, bibliography, checklist of the exhibition, acknowledgments. Softbound. Very Good. Includes and interview with Lazar Khidekel's son and daughter-in-law Mark and Regina Khidekel conducted by Alla Efimova. Khidekel, though practically unknown, was a central figure in the Russian art movement, Suprematism. He was at Vitebsk under Marc Chagall, but aligned himself with Kasimir Malevich when he came to teach at Vitebsk. Khidekel was a member of Unovis and later Inkhuk. As Suprematism split Khidekel followed Malevich Chashnik and Suetin. Malevich remained a painter. Chashnik and Sutin went toward decorative arts. Only Khidekel became an architect. He was able to build a few projects before the Soviet system turned away from the avant garde. He managed to continue on as a successful architect throughout the Soviet period, but he had to keep to his Suprematist ideas in a covert way only. He became an important thinker for the entire field of Soviet Architecture and inspired what was best within that period and into the post-Soviet era. This catalog accompanies an exhibit held at the Magnes Museum in Berkeley between November 15th, 2004 and March 20, 2005. This exhibition is only the second exhibit ever devoted to Khidekel's architectural drawings and fine art. [ha-Safran]: From Here to Obscurity
Henry Hollander, Bookseller has taken over the retail and wholesale distribution for North America of "From Here to Obscurity: A Novel," by Yoel Sherman. Orders should be sent to us directly for the time being. From the cover copy: 'From Here to Obscurity' tells the story of the now lost Jewish East End of London through the eyes of Shulem, an immigrant from Poland, his wife Rivka, and Yulus, their EWnglish born youngest son. It takes us through the turbulent years in London from 1933 to 1945, through poverty, fascist incursions, evacuation and targeted war-time bombings by Hitler's luftwaffe that destroyed the infrastructure of this one time thriving East London Yiddish-speaking community, forcing its ultimate dispersion. Shulem's relatives are lost in the Holocaust and many of Yulu's friends are killed by the last German V-2 rocket to fall on London. Despite all this trauma, 'From Here to Obscurity' is an uplifting tale of human warmth, humour and solidarity in the midst of overwhelming global forces. Paperbound. ISBN 0-9540811-0-2. [ha-Safran]: FS: Announcing a New Book: Memoirs of a Russian Emigre
I am proud to announce my latest, though modest, publication. "Istoriya Prozhitich Mnoyu 90 Lyet: Memuari Klari Berman/ The History of My Ninety Years: Memoirs of Klara Berman." This is a short memoir written in Russian by a very elderly member of my congregation, Klara Berman. Klara is a Russian Emigre who arrived in San Francisco in the late 1980s from Kiev. Klara came from a religious household in Kiev. Her father was a rabbi. She continued to practice Judaism is the Soviet era. She had a Jewish wedding with Rabbi and Chupah in the 1930s when Stalin's show trials were in full gear. During the Second World War, in which her husband died in combat, she and her son were evacuated to Tbilisi, Georgia. She worked in the Finance Ministry there. After the war she returned to Kiev and married her second husband. Her subsequent career was frustrated by Anti-Semitic actions directed from Moscow. She and her second husband emigrated from the Soviet Union to San Francisco in the late 1980s. Her second husband passed away several years later. Now, in her nineties, she wrote out this memoir to let her children and grand-children know the many things about her life that they didn't know. Klara is a pretty fierce person. Her Russian is direct and simple. Although this is a small terse book it tells a story infrequently seen in print. It should be of interest to those curious about the Russian emigre community in San Francisco and the US, about the lives of Jewish Women in Soviet Russia and about the practice and continuity of Jewish religious practice in Soviet Russia. A limited number of copies of this volume are for sale. The book is a quarto with side-stapled thick paper covers, 24 pp., b/w photos. Total postpaid price is $12.00 within the US. [ha-Safran]: Why find it on Amazon? Why not you you LJBS
A number of recent posts have told Safranim to "buy it on Amazon." I ask you, please, support your Local Jewish Book Sellers. Amazon is not a member of your community and gives nothing back to your community. Amazon has no institutional memory. Amazon can't get you all the books from the Jewish Publishing Houses that don't bother to use ISBNs. Your Local Jewish Book Seller should be viewed as a partner in your work with your synagogue, community or university community. Sometimes it might cost a little more to deal with them, but they are likely to be open to making arrangements for payment and may be willing to provide discounts if they are able (remember that Amazon's discounts are loss leaders meant to kill off the competition). Your Local Jewish Book Seller is a combination of muscle and brain. Unsupported they atrophy and die. If you don't have a Local Jewish Book Seller, support one in a nearby community. Find one and stick to them. If these are not enough for you try some of the on-line Jewish book sellers. I won't mention one above the other. They usually have a brick and mortar set up in the background that has a more complete stock than the offerings that appear on-line. Do I have a bias in this? Yes. I am a used and out of print book dealer. Do I have a horse in this race? No. I don't sell new books and I don't compete with Amazon in any meaningful way. If Amazon becomes the crutch that the Jewish community relies on to provide for its book needs we will be walking with a limp for a very long time. The Orthodox say, "ask your LOR." This traditional book seller advises, "ask your LJBS." Shabbat Shalom, Henry PS. As to those Jewish institutions with websites that link to Amazon and use Amazon's affiliate programs to make a few pennies on the dollar, for shame! Not to mention any names... [ha-Safran]: Inquiry regarding an Ibn Ezra quote
A customer wants to use this quote from Ibn Ezra "A book is the most delightful companion," as an inscription in a library. She is looking for the original Hebrew. She found a reference that indicated that the quote could be found in Ibn Ezra "Shirat Yisrael (12C), 1924, p. 93. This is an edition that was put together by Ben-Zion Halper. If anyone has a copy of this volume and can find that quote, it would be very much appreciated. Alternately, if there is anyone familiar with the quote and can supply the original hebrew from any other source that would do just as well. If you locate it in a book, you could fax a copy of the page to my customer, Susan L. Wood, at 952-992-5180 or to me at 415-831-3226. Thanks for any help. (21737) $55.00 Joseph Sherman, winner of the 2002 MLA prize for Yiddish translation, offers a close examination of the recurring treatment of the myth of the Jewish Pope in four Yiddish texts produced between 1602 and 1958 (The Mayse-Bukh, "R. Shimen Barbun the Rabbi of Mainz," by Ayzik-Meirr-Dik, "Der yidisher poypst: historishe dertseylung," by Y.Y. Trunk and "Zeydlus der erster," by I.B. Singer.) The myth that one day a Jewish apostate might come to rule the world as Pope derives from the ambiguities in the Biblical story of Joseph in Egypt. By was of his examiniation of the literary texts, Sherman investigates the way that Christian Europe's hostile attitude towards Jews has shaped modern Jewish identity and culture. Additionally, it addresses the influence of Yiddish culture on mainstream European culture and on self-perceptions of Yiddish-speaking European Jews. [ha-Safran]: For Sale: Books by Victor Perera
Victor Perera passed away recently. He was best known for his work "The Cross and the Pear Tree: A Sephardic Journey," in which he chronicles his family's history since the expulsion from Spain and explores the parameters of his Jewish identity. He was an instructor in writing at University of California Berkeley and an important figure in the northern California Sephardi community. Though "The Cross and the Pear Tree," is probably already in nearly every library's collection I thought this might be an opportune time to remember Perera and set a few more copies of his books out there before the reading public. We ship and bill to libraries, of course. The BOOKS 1. Perera, Victor. "The Cross and the Pear Tree: A Sephardic Journey." London, Andre Deutsch, 1995. First UK edition. Octavo in dust jacket, xii, 282 pp., b/w photos, bibliography, index. Hardbound. Very Good. $15.00 2. As above. The American edition. $15.00 3. Perera, Victor. "Of Whales and Men: Patagonian Encounters." Berkeley, CA, The Author, ca. 1998. Quarto, plastic spiral binding, paper covers, 125 single-sided sheets. Softbound. Very Good. This appears to be a version of the published text that Perera may have used in his writing classes at UC Berkeley. A recent publication, but very scarce. $25.00 4. Perera, Victor. Unfinished Conflict: The Guatamalan Tragedy. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1993. First Edition. Octavo in dust jacket, xvi, 382 pp., map., b/w photos, epilogue, bibliography, index. Hardbound. Very Good. Photographs by Daniel Chauche. Perera's Jewish Guatamalan childhood is described in his memoir "Rites: A Guatamalan Boyhood." This book, though it seems far from Judaica I think is interesting. Here is a Sephardic Jew, born in the America's, telling the story of a genocide that happened in his native land. $12.50 End Henry Hollander, Bookseller 843 Twenty-Fourth Avenue San Francisco, CA 94121 http://www.hollanderbooks.com 415-831-3228 fax 415-831-3226 Jewish books in all fields and languages. === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
