[ha-Safran]: Jerusalem Books New Year's Newsletter

2011-10-14 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

Frequently we see books on the history and politics of Israel and
often, although in Hebrew, they are significant in terms of Mid-East
history and international relations. One such important new book is
'Ha-Yad she-kaf'a,' 'the Frozen Hand,' by Uri Sagie. The book is
primarily about the Shepherdstown peace talks held between Israel and
Syria, in January 2000. The talks were held under US auspices in this
small West Virginia town. They were hosted by President Bill Clinton
and attended by Sec. of State Madeline Albright, Sandy Berger, Dennis
Ross, Martin Indyk, and Farouk al-Shara, leading the Syrian
delegation. Ehud Barak led the Israeli delegation which included
David Levy (FM) and Uri Sagie.

The book is thoughtful, full of important facts and even maps. The
book includes past history including the relationship with Ehud Barak
prior to his becoming Prime Minister and an assessment of the
aftermath of Shepherdstown and Israeli Syrian relations.

One of the underlying themes of the book is that there are technical
details and 'the big picture,' not always seen by the advisors. Uri
Sagie a distinguished Israeli General and former head of military
intelligence, points out that advisors and military leaders told PM
Menachem Begin of the dangers of withdrawal and peace with Egypt,
and at a critical moment Begin said thank you but 'I have decided to
make peace with Egypt.' The author beleives that this bold vision is
necessary and indicates that it was lacking at these critical
negotiations. The 'frozen hand,' therefore was Ehud Barak's
unwillingness to seize the opportunity, according to his view.

Now, in the light of hindsight perhaps this view seems weak and less
convincing. After all, former Syrian dictator, Hafez al Assad died
that year in (June) 2000. The authority, legitimacy and
sustainability of such a peace looks doubtful. If the author credits
the bravery and wisdom of a Begin to make peace should it not follow
that the unwillingness to adopt or revive a questionable deal by
another Prime Minister in different circumstances should likewise be
respected? The book is an important work. Its points are worth
studying and have wide, even worldwide implications. However, one
can't escape the feeling that the author and perhaps other advisors
and leaders feel compelled to make bold moves and gestures so as to
capture their moment in history, as might have been the case for the
author, Uri Sagie if a peace deal had been signed between Israel and Syria.

Nevertheless, the book is serious significant first person history.
It marks one of the milestone's in Israel's history and Mid-East
politics. It provides a vantage point on negotiations, decision
making in Israel, Syria and the US. Published By Yediot Hemed, isbn
978-965-511-477-5, Cat.77650 $34.00

Another title not to be missed, also categorized under Israel and
Zionism is David Kroyanker's latest, 'ha-Meshulash ha-yerushalmi..,'
'the Jerusalem Triangle an urban biography.' While, his five other
related books dealt with research and history of Jerusalem
neighborhoods, this deals with a triangle urban space at the
crossroads and heart of Jerusalem, namely Ben Yehuda, King George and
Jaffa, streets. The book is glossy and has photos and illustrations
but is not a coffee table book. It is a professional and scholarly
analysis of architecture, history and culture in Jerusalem from the
(late) Ottoman period, through the British mandate in Palestine and
particularly from 1948-2011. The bibliography, notes and index are 44
pages. Published by Keter, isbn 978-965-07-1948-7. Cat. 8 $68.00

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Happy,
Healthy and Peaceful New Year from all of us at Jerusalem Books ltd.

Sincerely,

Jeff Spitzer

Dear Friends,

All of us at Jerusalem Books hope that all of you had an enjoyable,
possibly even memorable Passover. There have been so many wonderful
books published in Israel that it can only bring joy to a bookseller's heart.

In keeping with the beautiful renovation of its galleries the Israel
Museum has published an outstanding book entitled,' Me'ah Shenot
Omanut Yisraelit,' 100 Years of Israeli Art. The book by Yigal
Tsalmona, the Chief Curator is 503 pages all in Hebrew and records
the development if Israeli art with text and reproductions of major
works. The book has works, analysis and an index of over two hundred
artists as well as footnotes. What can be said about such a creation.
It has Art History and Jewish cultural as well as Israeli political
history. It is multi-faceted and multi- media making reference to
sculpture, posters, paintings and architecture and photography. I am
sure that many will agree that this book transcends narrow
categorization and should be a part of a Jewish library
collection. Isbn 978 965 278 378 3 Cat. # 76124 $76.00

Hebrew Literature is an essential topic and we promise to revisit
cover it in depth at other times and particularly in other forums
vis-a-vis those special clients who have serious interest and needs
in this area. Having said this we should mention just a few
highlights. 'The Poetry Beyond Words,' 'ha-Shira she-me-ever
la-milim,' is a classic on the Hebrew Poetry of Natan Zach, by the
author. It is published by KBM (ha-Kibbutz ha-Me'uhad), 2011 and
covers almost thirty years of the authors literary life, 1954-1973
and will interest all those interested in Hebrew and Israeli
literature and those who are involved in research of literature or
literary criticism. Cat. # 76471 $44.00

Also not to be missed, Aharon Appelfeld's, 'Mayim Adirim,' Mighty
Waters, the latest novel by the internationally recognized
Israeli writer. The book will enthrall and entertain as it reveals
the story of it's main character the noble farmer who searches for
justice not to mention meaning and love. Isbn 978 965 517 975 0 Cat
# 76730 $39.00

Jewish Thought or Philosophy and Rabbinics, aka Sifre Kodesh, overlap
and we will skip the difficulties and mechanics of that topic. Makhon
Van Leer and Magnes have published 'Rav be-Olam ha-Hadash,' 'Rabbi in
the New World : the Influence of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveichik on
Culture, Education and Jewish Thought,' edited by Avinoam Rosenak
and Naftali Rothenberg. This book includes a collection of scholarly
chapters by leading figures in modern Jewish Studies on the
teachings, philosophy and influence of this important 20th Century
CE, rabbi and scholar. The book traverses many important fields of
study from Bible interpretation – exegesis, Talmud, scientific
critical Jewish Studies, Modern Orthodoxy and much more. Prof. Joseph
(Yossi) Turner discusses what some have called his integrationist
philosophy which allows for embracing and study of modernity. The
precepts of 'tora u-mada' the combination of Jewish studies and
science, math, law, for example are amply analyzed in the chapters of
the book. The limitations of this thinking as it approaches
recognition of differing streams and pluralism in Judaism, as seen by
Rav Soloveichic are acknowledged. In other chapters the founding and
growth of Yeshiva University are chronicled along with figures like
Bernard Revel . Still other chapters deal with the openness to
interfaith dialog and its limitations or conditions within modern
orthodoxy. In summation the book is a broad and deep window into the
foundations and thinking of the 'modern orthodox' world.Isbn 978

of R' Israel Salanter zl and other modern mussar sages, such as
Rabbi's Eliezer Dessler, Lupian, Shmuelovich, Friedlander and Shlomo
Volve, with reference to Talmud. The book is structured and divided
according to Talmud Tractates, (Mesekhtot), and the works of these
leading Rabbinic Mussar sages are cited to each book, part and page.
The books of the aforementioned sages as well as earlier sages, such
as the Saba mi-Kelm, (R' Sincha Zisel Broide), the Savot of
Novhordok and Slobodka are also included and cited. This book is
remarkable in its painstaking comprehensivenss edited b y R' Yitzhak
Azulai and R' Yosef Aliasi. This is a significant bibliographic work
which will be an essential research tool in the years to come. It is

Dear Friends,

In the area of Israel Zionism and Hebrew Literature, Stef
Wertheimer has authored his autobiography entitled, 'Ish le-yad
mekhona.' A Man Beside a Machine, may be an accurate and humble
description of the author but this book deserves significant
attention despite its humble title. This book which chronicles the
life of one of Israel's leading business figures from Germany to
Israel, is in many ways a paradigm for all the modern history of (the
people and state of) Israel. From (pre) holocaust refugees to youth
in the Palmach and building an army, a state and an economy, his
history is the history of Israel. His involvement with the infant IDF
and cottage industry weapons manufacturing and his progression,
including a stint as a member of Knesset (MK) for the Labor party to
status as titan of industry are documented and discussed. Naturally,
the building of ISCAR and its sale to Warren Buffet's Berkshire
Hathaway is covered. The philosophy, ideology and mindset which fuses
Capitalism. Socialism and Zionism and the obstacles faced and
overcome are examined. This book is a shining example of the
fulfillment of the prophecy of beating swords into plowshares and the
thoughts, challenges and insights which go into making it happen.

Under Hebrew Literature and Israel and Zionism, Keter has published,
'Tsakhla ve-Yehezkel,' entitled(in English), 'Rachel and Ezekiel,' by
Almog Behar. This novel which depicts the lives of a young 'mizrahi'
couple, struggling personally, emotionally and economically in the
poor neighborhoods of Jerusalem. The book also explores the
historical, political and literary worlds of its protagonists. The
author employs references to Sephardi piyyut, liturgical poetry, to
explore the connection between Arab culture and Jewish – Israeli
life. He has even described these characters as yehudim aravim,
(Arab Jews). Isbn 978-965-07-1871-8.

In the realm of Rabbinics, we will skip several interesting and
important titles recently published by Mossad Harav Kook. (Please be
in contact with us if you are interested in getting such materials
and at discount prices.) Rather than focus on those, for a change,
and since it is Purim season, let us note a new edition of Megillat
Esther, (im perush ma'ase tokfo..) by R' Shlomo Abed Tawina zl. The
text, with vocalization is accompanied by commentary by the author
who was born in 1855. The book also includes the bio – history of the

Here a few very important and interesting titles in English:

Planning and Conserving Jerusalem / The Challenge of an Ancient City,
was actually published and released about six months ago (in 2010) by
the distinguished publisher Yad Ben Zvi. This excellent work is
attractive and impressive. It is Jewish and World History in that the
development of Jerusalem embodies historical periods and structures.
Those in turn reflect political realities for example Herodian and

Dear Friends,

So many exciting books so many topics the question is what to mention
and highlight.

Rachel Elior is the editor of and contributor to a new book published
by Magnes, entitled, 'Gan B'Eden Mi-Kedem,' ''A Garden Eastward in
Eden.' This book includes research by leading scholars into the
Biblical, Philosophic, Religious, and Cultural aspects and effects of
the Garden of Eden, story, even concept throughout history.

This book, which contains over fifty pages in English including a
forward and introduction by Prof. Rachel Elior and a synopsis of each
of the articles in the book is highly recommended for all Bible and
Judaica, libraries, scholars and students.
Cat. 75353 $36.00

Even though Bible is a separate category and the abovementioned work
is scholarly and from an academic press, the overlap with Rabbinics /
Sifrei Kodesh is obvious and sometimes a scholarly Sefer Kodesh,
Rabbinic work, on Tanakh will merit inclusion in the Bible category
rather than (or along with) the Rabbinics category. I find that this
is so particularly regarding scholarly works on Bible, critical
analysis from certain Mikhlellot / Colleges, (like Mikhlelet Herzog,
Ariel, Liphshitz or Bar Ilan or the Schechter Institute.
It is definitely so for our Jerusalem Books newsletter as well.

Shamma Friedman, distinguished professor at the Shechter Institute,
editor of the Talmud Ha-Iggud series has published another work
through the Bet Midrash la-Rabbanim be-America, Jerusalem and NY,
(Jewish Theological Seminary / JTS) and it is entitled,'Sugiyot
be-Heker ha-Talmud ha-Bavli,' and in English, 'Talmudic Studies
Investigating the Sugya, Variant Readings, and Aggada.' This work, in
Hebrew, is scholarly and a critical analysis of the Babylonian Talmud
of the 3rd – 5th Cent. CE including structural and linguistic
components and clues, if you will. The book also explores the Talmud
through a scholarly and critical examination of the Aggada, the
Midrashic tales and writings as well.

The very high level of scholarship is significant and its roots in
the 'school' of Prof. Saul Lieberman and Prof. David Weiss Halivny
likewise tangible and significant. This work is a must have for
Judaica Research Libraries, for Judaica, Rabbinics, Talmud
researchers, professors, teachers and serious students and will be
the basis of much study in future years. Cat. #75345 $49.50

It is the exception to the rule, which proves the rule, it is often
said. 'Ha-Yeshiva Ha-Rama be-Fiorda,' written and edited by Benjamin
Shlomo Hamburger is perhaps an example of one of the many exceptions.
The three-volume work is an example of a scholarly rabbinic work on
Jewish History, or more accurately the History of German Jewry. The
treatise covers early Jewish History from Italy to Germany. It begins
with a scholarly chronicle of the Jewish community in Nuremberg and
the founding of this important community in Fioreda aka Furth in the
15th Century CE. The work documents the history, important figures
and publications from its beginnings until the destruction by Nazis
in the 20th Cent. CE. While not from an academic press, the
comprehensive, encyclopedic work, published by 'Machon Moreshet
Ashkenaz, has footnotes, cites, indices and is genuinely scholarly.
This 3 volume set is highly recommended for any Judaica Library,
Jewish Research library, and any students or scholars interested in
Jewish History in general or German Jewish History in particular.
Cat. 75163 $94.50

'Sefer Netivot Mordekhai', a work on Talmud, Gittin tractate, was
published in 2006 by Machon Ofek. The work was by Rabbi Gifter of
Telz (hassudut). The work, author and publisher were recognized
enough to generate some interest and demand umong our clients. Also
in 2009 the volume on Kiddushin was published (by Ofek). Now, Sefer
Netivot Mordekhai on Talmud, Yebamot tractate, (2 volumes), has come
out and some of our customers have an SO based on the fact that this
was published by Ofek and they want whatever is newly published by
this publisher. The thing is the new publisher is Nahor Safra. What
are the best steps that a vendor should take? Obviously, we notify
our customers that the publisher has changed. Simultaneously we order
the books for our customers and make notes in our computer database
regarding the change. With a little luck any customer who doesn't
want the book will have ample time to let us know before the book(s)
go out. Since the title, series and author remain the same, the
default setting here should be that the SO stands and hopefully the
change in publisher

[ha-Safran]: New Book: The Yiddish Family Cookbook

2010-10-18 Thread Jerusalem Books
The Yiddish Family Cookbook / Dos Familien Kokh-Bookh

Authored by H. Braun
Translated by Beverly B. Weingrod

Step back into the world of our mothers and grandmothers! Weingrod's
translation of H. Braun's Dos Familien Kokh Bookh evokes the smells,
the nostalgia, the wisdom, and of course the recipes of the old
Yiddish kitchen. This cookbook combines a nutritionist's regard for
health with the plenty and culinary experience of the New World. The
nuances of cooking in America were eagerly followed by the Jewish
women of the early 1900s, hungry to adapt to their new land, while
keeping the laws of kashrut and absorbing up-to-date information
about healthy eating. The English translation of a large and
representative portion of the original book includes the charming
introduction to food categories, replete with their cautions and
admonitions. It retains the familiar cadence, syntax and lilt of
Yiddish in the informal manner of neighborly advice combined with old
traditional wisdom. The actual recipes, over 200, allow a peek into
the heart of the Jewish kitchen of those days: the ingredients that
were available, how to preserve food essentials, and ways to avoid
questionable products and merchants. Above all, the book claims the
remarkable ability, under these early conditions, to turn out meals -
as the subtitle suggests - in the style of American, French, Italian
and German cooking. Hasia Diner, in a comprehensive introduction to
the book, applies her extensive knowledge of early immigrant foodways
to place Dos Familien Kokh Bookh in historic context: ...anyone
interested in food history, American Jewish history, Yiddish culture,
women's history, and the history of the great East European Jewish
migration to the United States will have a chance to experience that
culture through its food and food ways.

[ha-Safran]: Summer Newsletter from Jerusalem Books

2010-07-08 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

This year, 2010 has been an eventful and exciting one for all of us
at Jerusalem Books ltd and an enjoyable one. We have faced the
difficulties of the financial crisis as have you and have
successfully struggled to overcome. We faced condemnation and
isolation of the Gaza maritime flotilla and still await the return of
Gilad Shalit.

Now as we anticipate the upcoming AJL in Seattle it is an appropriate
time to review and comment on some of the publications and
developments in the world of books from Israel.

In the realm of Hebrew Literature it is worth mentioning that David
Grossman is to receive an award at the Frankfurt Book Fair (in October 2010).

Etgar Keret has another novel published by Zemora - Bitan, 'Pitom
Defika ba-Delet,' A Sudden Knock on the Door, isbn 978-965-517-668-1,
Cat. 74013 $ 24.00

Cat. 73146 $17.00

A.B. Yehoshua, released, 'Gerushim Meuharim,' 'Late Divorce,' also
published KBM. Cat 73816 $ 29.00

On the popular side, Dan Sheinman, published, 'Nitu'ah Lev
Patu'ah,''OpenHeart Surgery,' about a doctor charged with homicide
when he doesn't resuccitate a patient who dies on the table. The
author is a well known attorney and the issues, you can imagine. Cat.

Under Israel and Zionism this time I would like to mention that Dan
Yatomhas written a book entitled, ' Shutaf Sod,' 'the Confidant –
from SayeretMatkal to the Mossad, published by Yediot Hemed,
878-965-511-140-7. Cat72070 $29.00 This might be compared and
contrasted to another memoire of historical significance, Dan
Halutz,' BeGova ha-Enayim,' 'Straightforward,' also published by
Yediot Hemed. The first book by the former head of the Mossad is by
an individual who has contributed much and whose insights are
important and have been relied upon by decision makers. The latter is
by the former air force chief and army chief of staff whose
preparation and handling of the Second Lebanon War will be judged by
the reader and history. Cat. 73324 $ 30.00

Rabbinics is an area that I have frequently written about and
hopefully will again in the future. For this newsletter I would just
like to include a bit about a recent monumental work published by Yad
Harav Nissim,We have recently seen and distributed, the Mahzor Aram
Zuba, aka 'Siddur Tefilot kk AramSoba..

The Mahzor Aram Zuba, aka Allepo Prayerbook aka Siddur tefilot al
piminhag k.k. –kehila kedosha Aram Soba. No, Yad Harav Nissim, who
worked on this for ten years to produce the first, only complete,
facsimile edition, didn't bother to get an isbn number. The work is
in 2 volumes with companion, soft cover intro volume. (Companion,
intro has an isbn isbn 978-965-91228-0-6) Nevertheless, it is a
monumental outstanding work. It preserves the liturgical poetry of
possibly 1000 years from 600 – 1600 CE, with over 300 piyyutim from
different authors.

Yad Harav Nissim has published the Mahzor Aram Zuba in offset edition
from manuscripts. It is 2 hard cover volumes and a soft cover intro
in a 3 book set. There are 3 different editions, a regular edition,
cloth covered and a numbered leather bound edition (375 copies) and a
collectors edition that will have 100 copies.

The work is a masterpiece which took over ten years to complete. The
Aleppo prayer book was first printed in 1527 and although no complete
copy exists it is extremely rare and significant especially since it
contains approximately three hundred (300!) piyyutim, early
liturgical poems from different authors. The companion volume is very
important and contains scholarly articles on liturgy, language and
history. This set will be an important resource for Jewish Studies in
the decades to come.

The regular cloth edition is being sold at $255.00, and we are
offering it at $ 238.00 Cat. 74348. The 'Deluxe' leather bound
numbered edition is being sold at $ 520.00 and we expect to sell it
at $ 480.00. (Cat 73630)

Finally, we would like to announce that we have a new and parallel
websitewww.jerusalembooks.org and our last catalog June 2009 – Jan
2010 is up on it.

The new catalog, Summer 2010, from Jan - July 2010 will be out
shortly. Please ask for a digital or hard, printed copy.

All of us at Jerusalem Books wish all of you healthy, happy, quiet
and satisfying summer and look forward to serving you this year and
in years to come.

[ha-Safran]: Fall 2009 Jerusalem Books Newsletter

2009-11-03 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

A recurring theme in our newsletters over the years has been the
importance of books which overlap different categories of books and
fields of Jewish Studies.

Midrash Naomi, is just such a book. It is authored and edited by
Avrajam Zigman and published by Yad Ben Zvi, isbn 978-965-217-297-6,
Jerusalem 2009. The book contains the poetry of Naomi Shemer
(1930-2004), an icon of Israeli, Hebrew poetry, literature and song,
with 'nikkud,' and the dates of each poem along with the text of the
author relating the passages to biblical, talmudic, midrashic /
(aggadic), rabbinic and hassidic sources. The work is accompanied by
the illustration, artwork of Ruth Zarfati. Without belaboring the
matter let me sum up by saying that the book is not only beautiful
and a fitting gift, but a resource for scholars and libraries
interested in Hebrew Literature and Bible, Rabbinics and Jewish
Studies. Cat. # 71980 $33.00

Another work of fusion worthy of much attention is a book entitled,
Dirshuni – Israeli Women Writing Midrash, edited by Nehama Weingarten
– Mintz and Tamar Biala. The work is a collection of midrashic
stories by Israeli women authors on biblical and talmudic passages,
aggada. It is scholarly and enthralling. It is modern Hebrew
Literature and classic Jewish Philosophy. It is ancient Aramaic and
modern Hebrew prose. It is classic Bible study and Jewish Studies and
Judaism and Feminism. It is a window on the Jewish Thought and Hebrew
literature of some 35 of the wisest best educated modern Israeli
women authors. Published by Yediot Hemed and the Jewish Agency, isbn
978-965-482-862-8, Tel Aviv 2009. Do not pass go, do not miss this
book.Cat. # 71866 $28.00

In the realm of modern Hebrew Literature popular prose and titles
which straddle categories such as Bible or Israeli society and
culture let's note Ram Oren's new work – Me'ha-Tanakh be-Ahavah
('From the Bible with Love,') isbn 978-965-7130-37-7, published by
Keshet. In this work, with the assistance of Dr Yoel Rapel and Dr.
Pnina Galpaz Feler, the well known and immensely popular author
depicts monumental loves from the Tanakh. Cat. #71821 $31.00

At the other end of the spectrum is the recent work by Moshe Pelli,
Kerem Hemed . This is a scholarly work of great importance in terms
of Jewish History as well as Hebrew Language and Literature. It
analyzes this / these early Hebrew language journals. It has
important indices, footnotes, bibliography and not least an important
introduction in English. The book is published by Magnes,
isbnCat 71848 $ 34.00

We have just gotten the second volume of the series, 'Encyclopedia of
the Jewish Story, (subtitled, Sippur Okev Sippur), edited by Yoav
Elstein, Avidor Lipsker and Rella Kushelevsky, isbn 978-965-226-358-2
and published by Bar Ilan University, Ramat Gan 2009. This is an
important scholarly work of studies in Jewish Literature. It is a
critical, scholarly edition. (Volume I came out in 2004) Cat.
#71763 $44.50

Similarly we have seen what turns out to be volume II of Ma'aseh
Sippur, Studies in Jewish Narrative. It is equally important, edited
by Avidor Lipsker and Kushelevsky and published by Bar Ilan
University isbn 978-965-226-339-1, 2009. Cat. #71774 $47.00

Lastly, I would like to mention and promote a little, 'popular,' book
published by author, David Ehrlich, entitled, 'Sefer
Ha-Ahavot...' The book is about the well known, Jerusalem literary
café' Tmol Shilshom owned by, you guessed it, David Ehrlich. The
book contains 'interviews' with couples who met at Tmol Shilshom and
I must admit a personal interest here, one of those couples is Jeff
Spitzer and Nicky Cregor, my beloved wife. No, this is not a vanity
book and we did not finance it's publication. It is an example of
21st Cent. CE modern Hebrew lit. and at the same time a window onto
this wonderful place where food, books, poetry and some interesting
varied couples meet. Cat. # 71370 $10.00

We hope that these short updates on Israeli publishing are
interesting and helpful at least in parts and at times and encourages
all those involved in the important work of collecting, researching,
teaching and studying, books in Hebrew from Israel.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have
supported us over the past year and years for that matter.

Sincerely,

Jeff Spitzer

and across cultures and identities. Published by Kineret

Next, lets stay with Hebrew Literature and it's overlap with
Philosophy, Jewish Thought and Israel and Zionism. Dr. Taub has
written a novel, which weaves literature and those other fields as
well, in, 'Allenby,' an Israeli story which explores Zionism. Some
may think that this is a Tel Aviv version of secular Zionism but that
is the author's point. Published by YediotHemed, isbn

This contrasts very nicely with a new important work of modern
Hebrew, Israeli fiction, by Emily Amrosi, 'Teris,' English title:
Settler. This book depicts strong characters from the uncontrollable,
nationalist youth to the confusion and ambivalence of religious
Zionist men and women. Published by Zemora Bitan isbn
978-965-517-392-5. Cat. # 71166 $ 25.00

These works straddle and overlap many areas from Hebrew Literature to
Jewish Thought, Philosophy and more.

Research on the Shoah goes on and I recommend, 'Previously Unexplored
sources on the Holocaust in Hungary,' subtitled: a selection from
Jewish Periodicals 1930-1944, by Anna Szalai, Rita Horvath and Gabor
Balazs, Yad Vashem (2007), isbn 978-965-308-300-4. The work in
English, paperback, which is a collection of articles is scholarly,
academic and revealing. It casts light on Jewish publications of the
period, the cultural and religious pressure and oppression. Jewish
political and philosophic responses to the situation are documented
and examined. Issues and statistics regarding assimilation and
conversion to Christianity are also analyzed. This book is a must for
any library of History or Jewish Studies. Cat. # 70690 $36.50

In the realm of Rabbinic works, Sifrei Kodesh: Mossad Harav Kook has
released a fresh crop of important works.

Sefer Hagan, Classic Bible commentary of the 13th Cent. CE. This
important work from manuscript is first being published now from one
of the Baale ha-Tosefot, R' Aharon ben R' YossiHaCohen. Cat. # 71164 $ 29.00

Rishonim LeZion Hine Hinam, by Geula Bat Yehuda, edited by the noted
scholar Yitzhak Alfasi, by Geula Bat Yehuda. This work contains much
information on many Palestinian / Israeli Rabbis. Cat. # 71165 $ 22.00

Hamitzpe al Rambam, by R' Polin. Cat 71163 $ 23.00 (vol. 3 !)

Finally, also from Mossad Harav Kook, 'Perush Ha-Ramban le-Yerushalmi
Seder Nezikin.'This is an important new work, scholarly, with
footnotes, cites, introduction, edited by YoelFlorsheim.Cat. #
71158 Cat. $ 26.00

On Halacha in particular and Jewish Law in general I would like to
mention that MoreshetHamishpat has published 'Shutfut nehasim,' by
Prof. Nahum Rackover.

This is a work on the nexus between Jewish Law and Civil law
regarding joint ownership of property. Cat . # 70860$49.00

Also on Halacha, Sefer Mishnat Yisrael, published by the author
Yisrael Wineman, examines the law of proper behavior, relations
between man and his fellow man. The work is rabbinic not academic but
scholarly with indices to Talmud, Poskim, Shulhan Arukh,Aharonim,
Responsa and Hafetz Hayim. Cat. #71200$ 32.00

In a prior newsletter we mentioned that Eti Ankri released a CD in
which she sings YehudaHalevy and got a strong response, now, we would
like to announce that Bary Sakharov has released a music CD singing
the piyutim, liturgical poetry of Ibn Gavirol, AdumeHa-Sefatot. The
CD includes a booklet of the 11th Cent CE Hebrew texts from Spain
Cat.# 71194 $ 27.00

I would like to say that I especially look forward to seeing many

[ha-Safran]: November good books from Jerusalem Books

2008-11-17 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

Yediot Aharonot and Sifre Hemed have recently published two important
works of Jewish Thought, which deserve special mention.

Before doing so let us note that once again many important
publications occupy and overlap several categories of Judaica or
Hebrew publication. These two works could easily be viewed and
categorized as modern Rabbinic works. They are that as well as
serious Jewish Philosophy / Thought.

'Foundations – One Hundred Concepts in Judaism,' entitled, 'Hanakhat
Yesod,' in Hebrew, is significant, comprehensive and sweeping work of
Philosophy, halacha, custom from Bible and Talmud, the Shema and
other prayers, charity, mourning, holidays, including Holocaust
rememberance, conversion, faith, Rashi, Hassidut, Mussar and much
more. The work by the legendary Chief Rabbi, R' Yisrael Meir Lau, is
clear, deep and moving but covers so much that it cannot go into
really great depths on any one topic. Most chapters are 2-4
pages. (isbn 978-965-482-757-7)

The book is highly recommended for any library collecting Jewish
Philosophy as well as for any student of Jewish History or faculty
and students of Israel Studies.
Cat. # 68681 $36.50

Another important book, by Rabbi Adin Steinzalts, 'Haye Shana,' 'the
Life of a Year,' and is published jointly, by Yediot – Hemed and
Ha-Machon HaYisraeli Le' Pirsumim Talmudi'im. This work is 346 pages,
is scholarly, with footnotes and will undoubtedly be recognized in
future years as a major work of Jewish Philosophy by a major 20th
Century Talmud Scholar. (Isbn 972-965-482-827-7). Cat. #68680 $36.00

A brief tale of Cohen and Levy.

Jonathan Cohen has published 'Lo Higati LaLitani,' ( I Did Not Reach
the Litani), an Israeli soldier's memoire of the Second Lebanon War.
The book is published by Maariv, Tel Aviv. Cat 65683 $ 24.00

At the other end of the spectrum is a recent work entitled 'Lo
BaShamayim Hi.' This work is a serious comprehensive work on Jewish
Oral Law. It covers from Biblical through periods of Prophets, Kings,
Temple, Sanhedrin, through Mishnaic, Talmudic and onwards. The work
is scholarly yet accessible. Principles of interpretation of the Oral
Law as well as different methodologies, (shitot), of several
different major rabbinic figures (including Maimonides / Rambam, the
Rif, R' Yitzhak Alfasi and others,) are all examined. The book is
recommended for any Jewish Library covering areas of Jewish
Philosophy or Halacha or Education and will be a useful reference
work as well. Published by 'Arachim,' the author is Aharon Levy.
Cat. #68582 $42.00

These last two books are, of course, entirely unrelated. Yet they
reflect the incredible reality and diversity of 21st Cen. (CE)
Israeli life, thought, expression and publication.

As well, we have recently seen a soft cover journal of archaeology.

The author is Zvi Uri Ma'oz and is published by the Golan Research
Institute and the Golan Antiquities Museum in Qazrin.

It is entitled, ' Archaostyle Scientific Research Series and the
first two issues, vol. 1 2 are dated 2006. Vol. 1 is entitled
Another Sacred Mountain – Tribal boundaries in Biblical Galilee (Cat.
# 68908 $ 17.00) and vol. 2: Dan is Baniyas, Teldan is Abel Beth
Ma'acha. (Cat. # 68909 $ 19.00)

(The first issue is only 40 pages but volume 2 is 120 pages.)

The works are scholarly with footnotes, biblical references, analysis
of much published archeological research/articles, with (volume 2)
over 34 pages of sources.

The works have copious references to Greek and Arabic language and sources.

Although these are dated 2006 we have only seen – 'discovered' it recently.

This series is scholarly and unique and will be of interest to
scholars of Biblical Archaeology.

Please let us know if you are interested.

Sincerely,
Jeff Spitzer

The values and archetypes of the Tzadik are examined and the tensions
between Jewish social classes, Hassidim and Misnagdim are all

And last, Tzror Hamor by Rabbi Avraham Sabba, Translated and
Annotated by: Eliyahu Munk

Rabbi Avraham Sabba was born in Castile in 1440 and spent the first
50 years of his life in parts of Spain where Jews lived in prosperity
and security. He wrote many books, among them the Torah commentary
Tzror hamor. His genius is evident from the manner in which he
selects hundreds of quotations from the Zohar, the most famous
mystical text, in which he demonstrates that the author of the Zohar
is capable of being understood by the average Jew, (as opposed to
scholars) and that the Zohar is helpful in understanding many
difficult passages in the Torah.

He was forced into exile to Portugal in 1492, and to North Africa in
1497 after not only being persecuted and seeing many members of his
family killed, but he had to rewrite this commentary completely from
memory, as in Fez, Morocco he had no library at his disposal. He died
on board ship on the way to Italy and was buried in Verona in 1510

The translator, Eliyahu Munk, was born in Frankfurt on Main, where he
received his education at the Samson Rafael Hirsch Realschule, and
the Yeshiva of the late Rabbi Joseph Breuer, of blessed memory. He
continued his education at the Yeshiva in Gateshead, England. He
served in Jewish education (primarily as a teacher) for almost 30
years in Toronto, Canada.

We have had a couple of Yiddish titles in recent months, if you'd

We are proud that we has located many important titles on Jewish Life
in Turkestan, Kazakstan, Azerbaijan in Russian by different, leading
scholars who spent years studying documents in archives in those
countries and Moscow. For these, please be in touch.

We would like to end with 2 new music cd's – Yasmin Levy on / in
Ladino and Hava Alberstein.

Finally, we would like to wish all our friends a Happy and Healthy
New
Year.

[ha-Safran]: Summer newsletter - August 2008

2008-08-24 Thread Jerusalem Books
August 19. 2008

Dear Friends,

The Hecht Museum of the University of Haifa has published the Great
Revolt in the Galilee. A bilingual book (Ha-Mered Ha-Gadol Ba-Galil)
by Ofra Guri-Rimon, editor and curator. The book is 122 in Hebrew
and 17 pages in English and has articles on the archaeology of
Zipori, comparison between Judea and Galilee at the time of the
revolt against the Romans, which took place between 66-70 CE, and
scholarly analysis of/from Jesephus to Vespian.

This is a scholarly yet accessible and enlightening, softcover museum
catalog that I highly recommend for libraries from research and
reference and all levels of Jewish education.

Cat.no. 67179, $39.00

In Hebrew literature we must mention David Grossman's – Isha Borahat
me-Besorah (his translation – Until the End of the Land). It's had
7 printings since its appearance earlier this year. Cat.no. 66910 $36.00

Sami Michael's new title - Ayida – will also likely be a modern
Hebrew classic. This title should not be confused with Verdi's
opera. Cat.no. 67437 $29.00

In English we have a number of good picks …

Daniel Sperber's Jewish Life Cycle - this new book from Bar Ilan is
dual published with Oxford Univ. Press. Although it is printed in
Israel. If you have not heard about this book yet, please google
it. The isbn is 978-965-226-334-6 Cat.no. 67970 Price - $162.50

Gedalyah Nigal, Emiritus Professor of Jewish Literature, Bar Ilan
University, has had his monumental work, 'the Hassidic Tale,'
published by the Littman Library, isbn 978-1-904113-07-2, Portland
Oregon, 2008.

This is the translation of the work previously published in Hebrew,
which was highly acclaimed. (Cat. #66968) The work would be
worthwhile even if only for it's introduction which describes the
development of Hassidic literature from storytelling, through, beyond
and beside parables, from the 18th until the early 20th Cent.
(CE). The largest portion of the introduction includes a summary of
significant Rabbinic texts which incorporate the many Hassidic tales.
This section charts from the 'Shivhei HaBesht,' through the many
important titles, by many Hassidic Rabbis, published in Lemberg. The
later portions list and summarize works of R' Simha Bunim Michelson,
R' Israel Berger, Kleinman, Yudel Rosenberg, including works
published in the early 20th Cent. (prior to WWI) in Pietrokow.
Finally, the book Hutim Hameshulashim, by R' Avraham Stern (Montreal,

Dear Friends,

The 60th annual celebration of the State of Israel's founding has
inspired much publication in Israel. So much so that I feel the area
must be revisited.

'Derekh Ha-Azma'ut 60 Years and More To Come,' 'Haatzmaut Road,' is a
book / album depicting the development of the State of Israel,
including art, photos, posters, cards and much Hebrew and English
text. It is a project of the Farkash Gallery, with historical and
educational research and text by Dr. Haim Grossman, isbn 965-7267-03
* ((the number appears backward and incomplete on the TP of the
book)). The book, in which Israeli art and history are intertwined is
as comprehensive as it is lovely, (448 pages) and is itself an
archive of Israeli History, Art and Culture of the second half of the
20th Cent. Cat. #67351 $ 98.00

The Ministry of Defense has published, 'Bereshit,' (Genesis) on the
founding and unifying of the Israeli Army 1947-1949. The book
written and edited by Michal Tzur examines this significant,
formative period in Israel's history and the difficult political and
logistical task of forming a unified army, the Israel Defence Forces
(IDF) out of rival militias (particularly, the Irgun – 'Etzel' and
'Lehi'). The book contains many photos as well as copies of
handwritten and typed letters from army commanders, Ben Gurion and
others. This book is fascinating and will be a source for reference
and research and provides a handy and accessible look into the
archives of the IDF. Isbn 978-965-05-1438-9. Cat # 67243 $ 39.00

60 Shnot Zilum Avir Yisrael Mi-Ma'of … a 'Bird's Eye View,' of
Israel through ariel photographs has great views of Israel but
manages to depict the development of Israel architecturally and
economically since it's founding. The book contains many old
photographs and text, which allows the reader to compare then and
now. Published by Yediot – Hemed, ed. Abramovich, Liad and Singer.
Cat. # 67244, $ 39.00

The latest issue of Eretz Acheret, (issue #44), has an impressive
collection of articles. There is an interview with Prof. David
(Weiss) Halivny, who this year won the Israel Prize and released a
new book. In the article, the distinguished scholar's history from
youth in Sighet, the Holocaust, and his integration and prominence at
the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) and Columbia University are all
discussed. He will forever be known for his study of the Talmud in a
systematic, scientific approach, which employs comparisons of
manuscripts and editions to determine the original positions and
arguments of the authors and editors of the Talmud. However, more
recently his philosophical and perhaps Kabbalistic understanding of
the Holocaust are also of interest.

The journal also contains articles on religious and secular
relations, globalization and wealth in Judaism, Jewish practices of
Russian and Ethiopian Jewry and much more. Last but not least, I
would like to mention that Jerusalem Books own, Dr. Menachem Kallus,
has an article on the philosophy of the 'Ari,' R' Isaac Luria and the
Baal Shem Tov. Dr. Kallus, a leader in this and other areas of
Jewish Philosophy, a student of Dr. Moshe Idel of the Hebrew
University, deals with the philosophy, the texts and methods of man's
spiritual enlightenment and ascendancy as well as the context of
these ideas within the development of western philosophers. Along
with a call for continued multi-disciplinary research in these areas
this author and others whose writing is published on the pages of
Eretz Acheret examine the universal aspects and potential of Jewish
Thought for all humanity.

Finally, in closing, I would just like to wish everyone a splendid
upcoming AJL convention in Cleveland. I look forward to seeing all
of you there.

Sincerely,
Jeff Spitzer

[ha-Safran]: Passover newsletter from Jerusalem Books

2008-04-09 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

As Passover approaches we are busy working extra hard at sending all
the wonderful material published in Israel and hoping that it all
will arrive within reasonable shipping time.

In addition to the monumental works in Jewish History and Philosophy
we are witnessing a flowering of Hebrew Literature. This is
especially so as we approach 'Shavu'ah ha-Sefer.'

Before mentioning some of the highlights in this area, I would like
to focus on two very important Hebrew titles.

The recent tile, 'Hassidut and Hassidim,' by Dr. Menachem Ben-Shalom
is particularly intriguing as the book examines the period in Jewish
History from the Second (2nd) Temple through the Mishna (and
significant Talmud quotes and cites, 3rd - 5th Cent CE). Most
students and scholars would associate the term Hassidut to the Rabbis
courts and followers of the Baal Shem Tov, ('Besht') in Europe from
17th thru 19th century CE.

The author, a professor at Sapir College, asserts Hassidut as a
heightened spiritual and halakhic state within the Pharisee stream of
Rabbinic Judaism, characterized by the intent to expand holiness and
go beyond the bounds of the law. This 583-page work is scholarly,
with footnotes, bibliography and indices. The indices are not only
people and subjects but also a separate index of researchers. His
index and citations of Bible, Mishna Talmud, Bavli and Yerushalmi
don't stop there and include many late or non canonized texts/scrolls
including the Book of the Hasmoneans - Maccabim, Hanoch, Jubilees,
Josephus, Philo and the New Testament., Essenes and more!
This work will likely be a watershed to scholars of Jewish History
and Philosophy as well as to scholars of Second Temple and Roman
periods as well as researchers of Early Christianity.

The book is in Hebrew, by the distinguished publisher Hakibbutz
Hameuchad, 2008, Cat. #66494 $33.50

Matay ve-Ekh Humtsa ha-Am ha-Yehudi ('When and How the Jewish People
was Invented'), is controversial new title by Prof. Shlomo Zand and
published recently (2008) by Resling.

The work attempts to debunk the myth of the Jewish People as the
author sees it. The author deals with heavy matters of philosophy and
history intertwined. I find the author to be enamored with the post –
modern, socialist theories that see the modern nation as a creation
of industrialization and capitalism. Further, the fact that ancient
times are characterized by small kingdoms, monarchies and even
multi-national empires need not negate the existence of nations,
which seems to be underlying Prof. Sand's thesis.

In a recent interview with Israeli TV the author mocked the existence
of the Jewish or Palestinian People. As regarding Israel he asserted
that if/since Sen. Joe Lieberman evinced no interest in emigrating to
Israel and since he could live out his life (as a Jew) without Jewish
sovereignty then somehow the Jewish People don't exist.
Having worked with many fine Italian American colleagues in NY, I
asked myself, if Giordano, Giovaniello, (or Guilliani) grow up in the
US and see themselves as Americans does that negate the existence of
Italy or Italians as a people?
Is it possible that the author exhibits some (post) Zionist
idealistic disappointment in that Israel the home of the Jewish
People has not been adopted by all, particularly western Jewry as
their only homeland?

Having said this, my feeble criticism should not detract from the
fact that the book is broad and scholarly and provides understanding
and analysis of important and interesting issues in Jewish History and Thought.
Cat. #66401 $31.00

Before wrapping up I would like to return to the fertile field of
Hebrew Literature 2008. Kineret-Zmora Bitan has published the latest
Aharon Appelfeld novel, 'And The Rage Is Not Yet Over' 'Ve-ha-Za'am
Od lo Nadam.' The book deals with the 'wanderings' of Bruno through
the ghetto, the Shoah, post-Holocaust Europe and Israel. His
personal challenges and wider more general issues of Jewish identity
are all examined. Cat. #66793 $ 26.00

No less important is 'H.N. Bialik : Stories,' 'Ha'im Nahman Bialik /
ha-Sipurim (with introduction, notes and supplements), edited by
Avner Holtzman. This work, is published by Dvir (also Kineret..) and
is a follow up or continuation of the 2004 Bialik title on Poetry.
Undoubtedly this book is a must have for any Hebrew Library. Cat.
#66587 $33.00

We are pleased and excited to be able to see, report and distribute
such outstanding examples of publication from Israel. In the near
future and through flyers and catalogs we look forward to exploring
more books on Hebrew Literature, Rabbinics, Mahshevet Yisrael and
many other areas.

Since this year we will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the
founding of the State of Israel, we are proud to mention some of the
many interesting aspects that are reflected in Israeli publishing this year.

All of us at Jerusalem Books wish all of you a Happy

In the area of Jewish Thought I would like to make some serious
recommendations.

in Jewish Thought, edited by Benjamin Ish-Shalom, presented to Shalom
Rosenberg. Subjects include, Rambam (Maimonides), R' Emden, R' Samson

Man, Body, Soul, Emotion, Wisdom/Sense and Will, by Michael Avraham.
The book is published by Hoza'at Tam – Sifriyat Bet –El, Kfar Hasidim
2007. The work is impressive and scholarly, with footnotes,
bibliography, index and even an appendix on Yeshayahu Liebowitz and
free will. This work is loosely, the third in a quartet of books on
Jewish Philosophy, the first of which was Shtei Agalot ve-Kadur
Pore'ah,' and the second, 'Et Asher Yesh No ve-asher Ainenu. This
book, which stands alone,is an important asset to any library of
Jewish Studies. Cat.no. 65919 $30.00

I would like to highlight an important, soft cover work that we have
recently gotten from the Samaritans. 'Markeh Le-Kol Kore,' by
Benjamin Zedaka has been published by A.B. Institute of Samaritan
Studies, Holon 2008. The work is a collection of Israelite –
Samaritan Homelitic commentaries on the Pentateuch. What is equally
important is that the book is an important piece of scholarship whith
implications for Hebrew Language and Bible study and interpretation.
The particular Samaritan work has parallels to Rabbinic Midrashic
writing. Cat.no. 65236 $79.00

Reuven Mass has re-issued 'Piyutei Elya Bar Schemaya,' 'the Poems
of Elya… a critical edition, by Prof. Yona David. This is an
important work of 11th century liturgical Hebrew Poetry, with
analysis, manuscript comparison, and explanation of words and terms.
Those who don't have the earlier edition or need a new copy will want
this, however since it is a 2nd edition we want to be in touch to ask.

Sources and Traditions – a source critical commentary on the Talmud
Tractate Baba Bathra, 'Mekotot u-Mesorot / Be'urim ba-Talmud… ,' by
Prof. David Halivny, has been published by Magnes, isbn

world recognized giant of Jewish Studies, Professor Emeritus Columbia
University and currently living in Jerusalem and teaching at Bar Ilan
University. This latest, seventh in a distinguished series, (although
by no means a volume VII, rather each volume can stand alone),
includes textual analysis based on manuscripts and comparisons.
Naturally, the corrections and additions are analyzed for their
sources and implications on the substance and terminology of the
Talmudic disputes. The book has over 15 pages of indices in addition
to serious footnotes. Cat.no. 65860 $32.00

[ha-Safran]: Rabbinics Newsletter Fall 2007 - Jerusalem Books Ltd.

2007-11-08 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

Nahum Rakover is one of Israel’s leading scholars in the area of
Jewish Law and he has published his latest book ‘Takanat ha-shavim.’
This field is the convergence of halakha and civil or secular law.
Before recommending this book, I must confess, to knowing the author
for almost 15 years since my short stint at the Justice Ministry.
Personal contact notwithstanding, this is a monumental work on the
Rehabilitation of Criminals,’ in the eyes of secular and particularly
rabbinic, ‘Jewish Law.’ The book, published by the Jewish Legal
Heritage Society, includes a 27 page English summary, over 600
footnotes, 73 pages of indices, bibliography and well over 100 pages
of appendices. Cat. # 64065, $ 52.00

Having mentioned the previous work it seems essential to mention that
Bar Ilan University has published Studies in Jewish Law – Judge and
Judging, ‘Iyunim Be-Mishpat Ivri u-behalakha.’ The book was edited by
Ya’akov Habba and Amihai Radzyner, isbn 965-226-319-2, Ramat Gan,
Israel 2007, Cat. # 63634 $42.00

“Elohim lo marshe,’ is the title of a small but important book at
what is perhaps the other end of the spectrum in this area of Israeli
publishing. The author, Hanoch Daum, has written a book which arouses
much thought and controversy in it’s assessment of the orthodox and
haredi communities, identities and philosophy in modern Israel. The
book includes extended open letters to the author’s wife, the
orthodox world from which the author comes and the larger society.
The book is published by Yediot – Hemed, isbn 965-482-424-8,
Cat. # 64695 $25.00

We should note the passing of Yisrael Segal a leading Israeli
journalist who often focused on the relationships between religious
groups and the state. He was a prolific writer and author and had
written Ve-Khi Nahash Memit,’ (Keter 2004).

Chorev Publishing of Jerusalem has published ‘Perush Ha-Torah
leRabenu Yitzhak Abarbanel,’ on the book of Bereshit (Genesis). The
book is serious, scholarly bible commentary of the famous Don Isaac,
the leader of the Jews and royal court of Spain (who preferred exile
to conversion). The book has subject headings, copious footnotes and
subject index. This work and later volumes will be an important part
of the collection of any Jewish Library.
Cat. # 64819 $ 36.00

Rabbi Dr. Michael (Mickey) Rosen, best known as the founder and
director of Yakar, has published a serious, scholarly and thoroughly
engrossing book, entitled, ‘Quest For Authenticity the thought of Reb
Simha Bunim.’ The book encompasses an analysis of the philosophy of
Przysucha Hassidut, and its place in 18th Century (CE) Poland. The
social and ideological struggles in Jewish and Hassidic history are
significant and worthy of research. This book manages to join
scholarship with the beauty, simplicity and humility of much of the
enduring wisdom reflected in the sayings and teachings of (this)
school or stream of Hassidut. The book is published by Urim,
ISBN 965-524-003 – 7, Cat. # 65155 $ 29.00

Finally I would like to highlight a new book by Prof. Admiel Kosman,
entitled, “Mesekhet Nashim,’ Woman’s Tractate, wisdom, love,
faithfulness, passion, beauty, sex, holiness.’ The book is the second
in a series by the author representing a new look at classical
Jewish sources. This work analyzes, translates and explains the text
with reference to tosefta, midrash and much more. The book presents
rabbinic stories from the Talmud and through medieval rabbinic
teaching including responsa on adultery and rape. Having said this I
don’t want to mislead as the book includes much Hebrew Language and
Literature as well as spiritual and philosophical aspects on gender
roles, love, faith sex and holiness. The book is published by Keter,
isbn # 965 07 1564 9. Cat. # 65050 $
27.00

For all those who haven’t heard yet and those who have already been
notified, we are pleased to announce that Seth Nelson Levy has joined
Jerusalem Books and will be responsible for communications and other
areas. We welcome him warmly and all of us will do everything to
maintain and exceed our standard of service to you.

We wish all of you a warm and peaceful Autumn and a Happy
Thanksgiving from all of us at Jerusalem Books ltd.

Thanks,

Jeff

latest, 'Ha-Shevu'ah,' 'The Oath,' published by Keshet, is a true
holocaust story of oppression, death, salvation and escape, by the
best selling Israeli writer better known for his fiction. Cat. # 64258 $ 25.50

2007-07-30 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

We at Jerusalem Books are pleased to announce that our Website is
back on line. We apologize for the temporary and unexplained crash of
our site.

We view this event as an opportunity for us to improve our website.
We will try and post more catalogs in scrollable PDF format and make
other changes and additions.

As the world of Israeli books and Hebrew Literature doesn't rest in
the summer months we would like to bring to your attention some
important and interesting new titles.

Amos Oz, recently published his latest novel in Hebrew, 'Haruzei
Ha-Hayim ve-Hamavet.' The book about a writer in Tel Aviv, and much
more, was published by Keter, Tel Aviv 2007, isbn #
965-07-1526, Cat. 63095, $ 21.00.

Another important work not to be missed is A.B. Yehoshua's, 'Esh
Yedidutit,' Friendly Fire,' which was published by Kibbutz Meuhad,

Tel Aviv, 2007, Cat.# 62807, $ 25.00.

Victory Over Hitler, is the title of Avraham Burg's latest work. The
book has generated much interest and controversy and is both the
autobiographical look into a family of Jewish refugees from Nazi
Germany, the experiences of growing up in Israel from the trial of
Eichman to wars and conflict with Arab countries and Palestinians.
Along the way the author, former MK, government minister and head of
the Jewish Agency, analyzes and challenges many concepts and
conclusions about the Holocaust and Israel. This book was also
published by Miskal – Yediot – Hemed, publishing, Tel Aviv,
2007. isbn 965-482-460-4. Cat. 63903, $ 25.00.

After mentioning these well known male authors it seems correct to
mention that Dr. Rivka Nardi has written another book about feminism
and equality in the modern world. Although the book is in Hebrew and
includes case studies of Israeli Men and Women, the book is a
scholarly look at relations between the sexes in society, religion,
work and home. The book is entitled, 'Nashim Hasrot Mano'ah,' and is
translated as, 'Timeless Women,' perhaps to avoid any negative
connotations of, Restless Women, (which is the literal translation)?
The book cites many important Israeli academic institutions, studies,
organizations, like Na'amat, and includes a bibliography of feminism
including many important Israeli sources. Published by Pardes, Haifa 2007.

  Isbn.978-965-7171-46-2 , Cat. 64002, $22.00.

This leads nicely into the area of Rabbinics / Sifrei Kodesh and
'Mahshevet.' Marla Frankel, has written an important book on Jewish
Thought and Philosophy, on 'Torata shel Nehama Leibowitz,' the
outstanding and influencial, Jewish Philosopher, Teacher and scholar,
of the 20th Century. The book which is part of the Yahadut Kan
ve-Akhshav series by Miskal, Yediot – Sifrei Hemed, Tel Aviv 2007,
isbn 965 – 482 – 287 – 3. Cat. # 63901, $24.00.

Mossad Harav Kook has published an interesting and important
collection of articles by R' Ovadia Yossef, (former Chief Rabbi),
Sefer Masa Ovadiyah, delivered at conferences on Oral Law. The issues
he discusses include Women's status, Medicine and Shabbat, returning
land – principle of preserving life – 'piku'ah nefesh,' to mention a
few. Of course this volume traverses the subjects of Halakha – Jewish
Law and Mahshevet Yisrael – Jewish Thought and Philosophy. Cat #64379,

   $ 22.00.

In the realm of new, exceptional Hebrew books from Israel, I would
like to mention, 'Darka shel Halakha, by Daniel Sperber, about the
legal judgements of Jewish scholars regarding women reading the
Torah. The distinguished author is a recipient of the Israel Prize, a
rabbi, and the president of the Torah Institute at Bar Ilan
University. The scholarly work, which includes history and philosophy
has serious footnotes, sources and quotes from classic rabbinic
sources. Lastly, the book comes out published by Reuven Mass, which
is this year, celebrating their 80th year.

Cat. # 64170, $25.00.

The title 'Meh'karei Eliezer,' is an example of a title which hides a
significant, milestone, work behind what could be an opaque and
obscure title. The book, is a collection of articles and research
papers, by Prof. Eliezer Bashan on the Jewish Sepahrdic Diaspora in
the East and West. The topics, which vary from Jewish and World
History from the 16th to 20th Centuries CE, to the relations,
political, religious and otherwise with the Moslem and Christian
Worlds, Greek, Turkish, North Africa. It is published jointly by
Ashkelon Academic College, which is a branch of Bar Ilan University
and Orot Yahadut Hamagreb, Israel 2007, Cat. #64381,
$34.00.

The hot weather continues in Arizona but it did not impede a very
successful AJL.

Thank you all once again for your interest in us and what we do.

Sincerely,

Jeff

[ha-Safran]: June Newsletter from Jerusalem Books

2007-06-11 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

We are pleased to announce that the Lieberman Institute has published
the latest, (second) volume of the Talmud Ha’Igud, on tractate
Shabbat, by Dr. Stephen Wald.

This is another in the new, landmark series in Talmud scholarship.
This volume displays the critical and scientific approach to Talmud
scholarship which has been the hallmark of the Lieberman Institute as
developed and perfected by Prof. Shama Friedman.

The analysis employed by Dr. Wald goes far beyond the traditional
analysis of the sugiyot and kushiyot, issues and ‘difficulties,’ both
textual and logical. Rather a comparison to Mishna, Mesorot, Aggada,
Tosefta and Talmud Bavli and Yerushalmi reveals the core and origins
of many talmudic principles.

The analysis of the debates and disputes of the Talmud, particularly
on such an important subject as Sabbath and the prohibition against
works on the Sabbath teaches much about rabbinic, tanaitic and
amoraic thinking, about logical principles in Jewish Law including
comparisons of different infractions against halakha and different
circumstances and culpabilities. Equally important is the systematic
analysis which reveals much about what are rabbinic prohibitions, (de
rabbanan) and what are forbidden by the Torah, ( Av Melakhot), (De oraita).

The work naturally includes copious footnotes and cites and also a
significant English language abstract of 35 pages.

We, at Jerusalem Books ltd., highly recommend this work for any
library or scholar of Jewish Studies, Thought or Talmud. Cat.
#63791 $ 39.00

Modern Israeli Hebrew Literature is naturally, a beloved and
important field for all of us at Jerusalem Books ltd. It is not only
the growth and flowering of the Hebrew Language it is also a window
and stage for Jewish and Israeli society, culture and politics in
modern times. As if this were not enough, we find the history of
Jews and Jewish communities on all (the inhabited) continents over
past years and centuries and ultimately much world history as well.

Ilan Sheinfeld has published his latest novel entitled, ‘ Ma’ase
Be-Taba’at,’ ‘A Tale of a Ring,’ which chronicles the lives of Jewish
prostitutes and pimps in ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns =
urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags /Argentina from 1870 –
1930. The masterful tale, published by Keter will be a noted part of
many modern Hebrew collections. Isbn 965 07 1530 4, Cat. # 63689 $
24.00

Recently, Kinneret published a novel by Gavriella Avigur – Rotem,
entitled, ‘ Adom Atik,’ as in an old red wine. The book, which has
historical components reflected in characters and events in mandatory
Palestine but is as well a rich depiction of human and family relationships.

An interesting detail is that the author was born in Argentina in
1946 and immigrated to Israel in 1950. Cat. #63792 $ 27.00

Sifri’at Po’alim (Hakibutz Ha-Meuhad) has re-released, ‘Mikhtavim
Me-Nisiya Medume,’ ‘Letters From an Imaginary Journey,’ by Lea
Goldberg. The book was originally published in 1937. Isbn
965-0300-02-01. Cat. # 63137 $22.50

Lastly, for now, since we want to be as nearly perfect as we can we
must mention, ‘Hayim Shelamin,’ ‘An Entire Life,’ by Aharon
Appelfeld. Published by Keter, 2007,

ISBN 965 – 07 – 1522 – 3.Cat. # 63165 $ 26.00

All of us at Jerusalem Books ltd. wish you a pleasant summer and
thank you for your interest and efforts.

Sincerely,

Jeff Spitzer

I look forward to seeing all of you at the upcoming AJL in Phoenix or

[ha-Safran]: Jerusalem Int'l Book Fair

2007-02-15 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

First, all of us at Jerusalem Books would like to invite any of our
friends and anyone who will be attending the Jerusalem Int'l Book
Fair, who is involved with, selection and / or acquisition of books
from Israel, to join us for a RECEPTION on February 20, 2007,
6-8:30PM at the Crown Plaza Hotel, with some wine and cheese and
Klezmer Violin. The event will be in a suite at the hotel, please
contact us for the suite number or any info.

Often we see unusual, high quality books which may of limited prints
and of course, if they are in profile we send them. Sometimes if the
material is of interest but perhaps self published or important but
not clearly within the profile, we send flyers.

This is one of those occasions where the material is important and
unusual but self published and expensive. The volume entitled, “Sefer
Segulot ve-Yishu’ot,’ includes facsimiles of several works from
manuscript. They are the work of the 18th Century, Yemenite scholar,
sage and cantor, Rabbi Reuven Shemaya, who emigrated with many
manuscripts including these, on Philosophy, custom, Astronomy and
astrology and magic, including, medicine, and amulets as well as
ethics dating from the 7th to 13th cent's. The publisher is Yeshua
Ben David Salam.

I cannot guarantee or verify how many copies are in print but if it
is available we can get it. I think that you may want this for the
library collection. Cat. # 62139 $138.00

‘Sefer Pnei Yehoshua,’ an 18th cent. Talmud and Aggada classic has
been re- published by ‘HAMOR Institute, / Machon HAMAOR in
?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns =
urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags /Jerusalem, by Rabbi
Daniel Bitton. This is a 6 volume work, Cat. # 62154 and sells for $168.00

This important scholarly work includes clear headings, footnotes,
author’s (R’ Yaakov Yehoshua) biography and over 800 footnotes in each volume.

A recent title which merits comment is Rav Yehoshua Weitzman, has
published, ‘Raba Emunatekha,’ lessons on Midrash Raba. The book is
scholarly, with serious footnotes and a nice index to all of Talmud
and other Midrash – Aggada and another subject index. The author is
the Rosh Yeshiva in Ma’alot on the Lebanese border and the book is
highly recommended. Cat. # 61891 $17.50

The next rabbinic work is mentioned because we want to recommend it
but also to remind those who are interested, about significant
publishers of this kind of material. One such publisher is Machon
Harav Mazli’ah an important publisher of “Sephardi” books. R’ Moshe
Horev is the author of the book entitled, ‘Sefer Keter Torah,’ which
deals with the Talmudic Principles of the ‘Ba’ale Hatosfot,’ early,
Rishonim / Sages (who were, as I recall mostly Ashkenazim living in
France and Germany, although some did come from Spain.). The work
also includes many translations and explanations of Aramaic, Talmudic
terms This constitutes the second edition, 2006, while the first
edition came out in 2005. Cat. #62211 $21.00

In the realm of known publishers that everyone ‘wants,’ Mossad Harav
Kook has published some new books. The description “new” is critical
here as this publisher is known for occasionally releasing new
editions of books previously published, (by them), without clear
indication that it is an offset or re-issue. The first is a two
volume work entitled, ‘Sha’mati mi-Ravi, Avi Ad Sar Shalom,’ which
are the teachings and Bible commentary of R’ Eliezer Shalom haCohen
Litovsky, (z”l c.1931), as heard, saved and edited by R’ Yisrael
Barzstitsky, who perished in the Lodz Ghetto. Rabbi Letovsky had been
a Dayan, the Judge of Lodz for over thirty years and the book not
only includes rare and priceless Bible interpretation but also
references to other European sages and even some tragic Holocaust
history. Cat. #62210 $ 34.00

Another important book just published by the Mossad Harav Kook, is by
Dr. Yehoshafat Nevo, ‘Eli Mikra, Iyun ve-Heker be-Sugiyout
Mikra’iot.’ This work contains much Jewish Thought and Philosophy,
as well as analysis of commentary including Rashi and Rambam to the
Maharam. The work is scholarly, with footnotes and deals with many
significant issues from nationalism and messianism to relations with
Christianity, the Spanish expulsion as well as the influences of
Islam from the 7th to the 10th Cent. (CE). I cannot recommend this
work more highly. It’s a Must Have. Cat. #62176 $19.50

Lastly, from Mossad Harav Kook, I must mention the recent publication
of, ‘Perushei HaRamban LeYerushalmi,’ Nashim tractate, Volume II.
This work, edited by Yoel Florsheim, is scholarly, with copious
footnotes and multiple indices. It is a work which analyzes and
compiles the teachings of Nachmanides the 13th Cent Spanish Jewish
Sage, first published now, from manuscripts. The only obvious
caveat, caution, is that this is part of an ongoing series. Cat. #62177 $24.50

Since we have mentioned

Dear Friends,

Since the recent resignation of the IDF chief, the Ramatkal, Gen. Dan
Halutz, it is timely to mention that Israeli fiction writer Ram Oren
has published a new book, entitled, “Ramatkal,’ the abbreviation for
Chief of the General Staff of the Army. The book which reflects many
trends and issues in modern Israeli life, touches upon power,
ambition, politics, idealism and aging along with the military and
political challenges faced by Israel in a complicated and dangerous
middle east. Cat. # 62097 $24.00

(Ram Oren recently also released another book, ‘Yamin Adumin.’ Cat#
61025 - a suspense novel based on a true story of love and war. )

In the book world, as in the film world, topics often come in two’s
or even three’s. ‘Be-sodo shel Ariel ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns
= urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags /Sharon,’ is a
biography of the former PM and general, written by his lifelong
friend, confidant and loyalist. Uri Dan, a talented author and
leading journalist wrote this chronicle of Sharon which is equally a
history of Israel including some of the recent astounding steps such
as the withdrawal from the Gaza strip. Publ. Miskal / Yediot, isbn
965-482-394-2, Cat. 62315 $ 27.00

It is important to note that the book was also published, more or
less simultaneously in English outside of Israel. Also another book,
‘Sharon / Tahanot Hayav (Stations of his life),’ has been published
by Shibolim, isbn 965-7384-14-1. It is a large format ‘coffee table’
type book with many photos. Included are many photos from the many
battles in which he fought and at least one lovely photo of Sharon
holding a pomello. Cat. # 61558 $ 37.00

Dan Shilon another celebrated Israeli journalist has published a
novel entitled, Teguva Ro’emet, ‘Stormy Reaction.’ This is another in
the realm of timely fiction that reflects and perhaps expresses
Israeli political, social, international, military realities. The
book, deals with military action in Lebanon and the role and
influence of the ‘media, among other things.’ Published by Miskal –
Yediot, Hemed, isbn. 965-482-357-8, Cat. #61233 $26.00

In this past Friday issue of Ha’aretz they mentioned a journal of
Hebrew Literature in English, MHL, No. 3, published by Toby Press.
Now, this is published in the US, so I/we, at Jerusalem Books Ltd.
don’t ‘need’ to mention it. However, I can’t help but be positive and
supportive of a journal of literature which increases the awareness
of Israeli Hebrew authors. Hopefully, this will increase the need and
desire to acquire these books in their original Hebrew.

Recently, the world of Hebrew Literature saw the passing of Prof.
Gershon Shaked, the known author and literary critic. He taught at
Tel Aviv University and Jerusalem Books distributed more than a dozen
books he published over the years.

In the area of Rabbinics / Sifrei Kodesh I hope to post a separate
newsletter shortly. Needless to say, if you are looking for the new
Talmud Yerushalmi, single volume edition or anything else by Ketuvim,
or new things from Mossad Harav Kook, please let us know.

All of us at Jerusalem Books wish you a Happy Purim.

Sincerely,

Jeff

[ha-Safran]: Jerusalem Books Thanksgiving 2006 Newsletter

2006-11-16 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

In the field of research on Hassidut, the name Prof. Gedalia Nigal
must always be mentioned. And if you don't yet have – Sipurim
Hasidi'im me-Lamberg-Lvov (cat.no.60111 $54.00) you really should
order it now. However, R’ Yitzhak Alfasi, the known researcher and
author has recently released two new books, ‘Hassidut b’Kol Dor
va-Dor,’ and ‘Hikre Eretz Yisrael’. Both books are published by
Shem, Jerusalem 2006.

‘Hassidut b’Kol Dor va-Dor, stretches from the Baal Shem Tov and the
Vilna Gaon to Rav Mendel of Vitebsk, who led others and emigrated to
Israel (made aliya), in the late 18th century. This work builds upon
other works by the author such as his 4 volume set, The Encyclopedia
of Hassidut (set #744, each volume about $20.00) but stands tall in
its important contribution to research in this field. The book
chronicles the relations between European and pre-Israeli Hassidut.
The final chapters of the book include research on women in Hassidut
and the bibliographic origins of certain Hassidic works. Cat. #61423
$20.00 (341 pages)

The second above mentioned book, ‘Hikre Eretz Yisrael,’ includes much
history on Jews in Ottoman Palestine from the 17th century onward
including an alphabetical listing of sages and biographies. The book
includes chapters on the communities of Hebron and Tiberias as well
as Tel Aviv and Religious Zionism. Cat #61424 $20.50 (373 pages).

Ahavat Shalom has published two books by R’ Eliyahu Rabinovich
Teomim, aka the Aderet. They are part of the multi-volume work,
‘Otzar Kitve ha-Aderet. The 2 books are: Shlosha Sefarim Niftahim
(cat.no. 61657) (Har Ha-Moria, Ozne Yerushalayim and Yalkut David)
and the second book, (Otzar…) Sefer Megillat Simanim (and) Teshuva
Me-Yira (cat.no. 61656).

The first, ‘Otzar Kitve ha-Aderet – Shlosha Sefarim Niftahim is on
Halakha and the second book includes a glossary of Talmud
abbreviations. The last book within a book, so to speak, is a play on
words on its subject ‘Yira Li,’ by Rambam/Maimonides and was
originally published in 1907. Both books are serious, scholarly
works, with square print and extensive footnotes and contain much
material first published now from manuscripts.

Regarding Holocaust research, history and memoirs, I would like to
mention and recommend the recent work by former Knesset Speaker, Dov
Shilansky, Hashekhah le-'Or ha-Yom (Darkness Shrouded the
Day) published by Yad Vashem. Cat. #60507 $21.00

Another holocaust memoir, this one self-published is Me-Hasho’ah el-
Shahar Hadash,’ ‘From the Holocaust to a New Dawn,’ is by David
Shahar, and is a first person chronicle of death and survival of
Polish Jewry and the author’s new dawn in Israel including going from
a refugee to fighter in the War of Independence. Cat. #61348 $40.00

In Hebrew Literature, along with a new novel and a new edition… such
as Kameha, ‘Longing,’by Judith Rotem (Cat.no. 61509 $24.00) and
‘Shlosha Me-Hem,’ by Aharon Megged with language changes by the
author (Cat.no. 60904 $22.00) I would like to mention two important
new books which involve literary critique and analysis of two major
authors of Hebrew / Israeli Literature. The first is entitled:
‘Yetzirah be-Yitzirah 'Asuyah,’ Creating from Creations,’
Inter-textuality in the Novels of Amos Oz, by Esther Azulay,
published by Dani Sefaim, 2006 (Cat.no. 61174 $22.00). The second
is Shmuel Thomas Huppert's ‘Kod-kod Esh,’ ‘Fire Crown – in the
company of the Poet Uri Zvi Greenberg, isbn 965-407-690, published by
Carmel 2006. Cat. #61420 $19.00

Lastly, I would like to highlight a recent book published by Yad Ben
Zvi, entitled, Holy Land Scenes, 1906. This book of photographs and
text commemorates and revitalizes a photo book of pictures of
Palestine made by the Imberger brothers, a Templar family who lived
in the German Colony in Jerusalem a hundred years ago.

The book by Yoel Amir has text by Jacob Wahrman and an introduction
by Prof. Haim Goren an expert on the History of Palestine and Israel.

It is a truly beautiful book which combines scholarship, history and
restored photographic images which make the scenes come alive. This
book is in English and Hebrew. Cat. #61560 $31.00

[ha-Safran]: Convention

2005-07-07 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear all,

I'm not a librarian and unless the convention comes to Israel, probably
will never attend one, but I've been following this conversation for the
past couple of years - so here's my 2 cents!

There are many universities in major cities - this may answer a number of
the problems brought up in the discussion.

and the recent suggestion of every other year - college/hotel - may
really be an option, especially if there is a desire to increase the
numbers of participants.

I think the idea of having the convention committee made up of others
outside of the area of the convention itself is a good one. The
accumulated experience of past years is always a plus.

as for the exhibitors - and only being able to speak for Jerusalem Books -
wherever you'll be, Jerusalem Books will be there!

[ha-Safran]: But is it Jewish? by Amnon Hadary

2005-07-07 Thread Jerusalem Books
My father in law, Amnon's Hadary has a new book out. As it has a US isbn
we (Jerusalem Books) will not be carrying it. But you can order it thru me
or thru Amnon directly
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]). As newly
published, the cost of the book is $15.00 plus $2.50 for airmail shipping
(advertised price is $16.75 plus shipping).

This new book But Is It Jewish? explores how writers of the 3rd Jewish
Commonwealth have not only gone to the well of ancient and traditional text
to find inspiration but have drunk deeply of it's waters - to create a
modern body of work with ancient echoes.

Paperback, BiblioBooks, 186 pages / ISBN: 0-9766681-1-4

Amnon Hadary was born in Palestine in 1929, spent the years '38 to '48 in
Chicago, and returned to the Land of Israel in time to serve in the Palmach
during the War of Independence. So he has experienced life in the diaspora
in one of the world's oldest democracies and homecoming to one of the
newest. A member of a kibbutz for 20 years, he spent the past 35 years in
Jerusalem, working, writing, editing and lecturing. His first book, in
Hebrew - Ruah B'li Hatzalah / ha-Roman ha-Yehudi ba-Amerika (To Royal
Estate: The American Jewish Novel) was a critique of American Jewish
literature.

Married, with children and grandchildren, his commitment to Zionism remains
vital: its realization attainable only through the imperative of
peace. The affirmations of an unrepentant Zionist are written in that spirit.
There will be a limited book signing tour - mid-September and October in
NY, Philadelphia and Chicago areas -by the author (and Rivka) please feel
free to contact them for further details and an invitation and even the
possibility of setting up a lecture while they're in the states.

[ha-Safran]: Newsletter early June 2005

2005-06-07 Thread Jerusalem Books
Dear Friends,

Regarding material published in Israel I occasionally prefer to mention the
more popular material and not just, say, archaeology at Lachish. I contend
that sometimes in music CDs, museum catalogs or even Haggadot we can often
learn so much from language to social trends, influences and history.

A new significant CD has come out with Yossi Banai Reading Tehillim
(Psalms) - (or in Hebrew Yossi Banai Koreh Tehilim) . This of course is
of multi - disciplinary interest and defies categorization. The blurb on
the back of this boxed set reads: The 19 Psalms read by Yossi Banai, one
of the greatest Israeli actors, to original music by Jonathan Bar Giora,
and the book of Psalms, presented to the modern Hebrew reader by Dr. Moshe
Anat, illuminate the sublime art of the Hebrew poets who wrote The Book of
Psalms thousands of years ago. (Tov, so the english blurb isn't great but
you get the picture.) But this boxed set is impressive - it includes the
CD, with an English and Hebrew listing of the tracks and a hardcover copy
(about 8.5 x 6) of Tehilim in Hebrew. This would not only make a
wonderful educational tool but also a beautiful present. Cat. # 55797 $24.00

'To Fall in Love with Israel,' (Lehit'ahev be-'Erets Yisrael) is a new
book of walks in Israel by the author (Israel researcher) Ofer Regev, and
includes history with discovery by focusing not on the wars and battles
associated with places but rather, love stories. For example in Jerusalem
the life and love of Eliezer Ben Yehuda and the house in Talpiot. Also Shai
Agnon and his beloved wife who alone could read his handwriting and type
his work. Cat. #55439 $22.00

Dr. Yael Levine, (PhD Bar Ilan) has published, 'Midrashei Bitya Bat
Paroh,' which is a critical scholarly work on this and other Midrashim and
the characters, role models, influence and perception of women in Judaism.
She includes many cites and references as well as Aramaic translation and
even the 'Mi she-berakh,' of 19th Cent. Rahel Luzzato. Cat .#55238 $12.50

In the area of History and Holocaust study we must mention Rav Lau's
holocaust memoir from Buchenwald to Israeli Rabbinate, 'Al Tishlakh Yad el
ha-Yeled,' Cat. #55542 $24.00 Also on Sho'ah is 'To Bear Witness,' on,
as the title suggests, 'Holocaust Remembrance at Yad Vashem,' soft cover
(the hard cover is out of print). Cat. #55040 $42.00

From, Michlala Yerushalyim there is a new important work entitled 'Yedei
Moshe, drashot bemahane hesger biyame ha-sho'ah.' Which include Drashot -
Sermons given in the concentration camp. The Michlala is a girl's college
in Jerusalem. Cat. # 55828 $13.50. They have also produced some new
important holocaust documentaries on CD. 'Lemi she-Asfani,' is the
testimony of Lea Nevenzal, an Israeli poet who survived the holocaust being
hidden by a Polish familiy. Another CD is called 'Mizvafda she'ih efshar
lakakhat,' is about Jewish life in Europe at the time of the holocaust. and
a third, 'Be-Tsar Kenafeih / Yomano shel ha-Na'ar Moshe'. Each of these
CDs are $35.00

On behalf of all of us at Jerusalem Books, I would like to wish all of you,
our colleagues and friends, a Happy Healthy Shavuot and a great AJL
convention in California, and I look forward to seeing you there. (Please
stop by our table and say hello!)

Sincerely,
Jeff Spitzer

[ha-Safran]: Koran / new translation from Arabic to Hebrew

2005-04-11 Thread Jerusalem Books
You may have seen this already, but just in case you haven't...

this translation with annotations, appendixes and indices by Professor Uri
Rubin. Published by Tel Aviv University Press and MAPA publishers. 600
pages, hardcover. $41.50 (surface shipping for the single volume $5.00,
airmail $10.00)

The following was on ynetnews.com

TEL AVIV - A new and updated Hebrew translation of the Koran, the book
sacred to Islam, hit the bookstores nationwide this week.

The Koran is regarded by Muslims worldwide as the foundation of Islam, the
revelation of god, and the final authority. Hundreds of millions of Muslims
are able to quote entire sections of the Koran by heart and they live their
life by its strict doctrines.

The latest translation was translated from Arabic into Hebrew by Uri Rubin,
Professor of Arabic and Islam at Tel Aviv University and a world acclaimed
expert on the Koran and its interpretations.

The translation was published as part of a new series on religion edited by
Aviad Kleinberg, a professor of history at Tel Aviv University .

Three earlier translations preceded this edition; the first by Hermann
Reckendorf was published in 1857. Yosef Yoel Rivlin translated the second
version in 1937, which until now was viewed as the most popular, with
several editions printed throughout the years.

The third version of the Koran was translated by Aaron Ben Shemesh and was
published in 1971.

According to Rubin there has been a need for a new translation for years as
the earlier versions were too complex to understand without the Arabic text.

Sasson Somekh, a professor emeritus of Arabic literature at Tel Aviv
University, agreed with Rubin, saying there was certainly a need for a new
translation.

Rubin's translation is very simple, lucid and void of trying to make an
impression. The text is accompanied by convenient footnotes and easy to
understand interpretations, he said

Dear all,

This NTSC video is 70 minutes long and was produced by the Israel
Broadcasting Authority, 2003. It is in English and is available for $28.00

The blurb says: ... it follows the footsteps from the beginning of his
training until his untimely death... For more than 4 years a film crew from
Israel's Public Television documented the long road which led Ilan to the
launch pad in Florida.

Please be in touch. Wendy

[ha-Safran]: Complete Guide to the Temple Mount Excavations

2003-12-11 Thread Jerusalem Books
Shalom, shalom,

We've just come across this English translation (2002) of a title we
carried (and still do) in Hebrew (2000). This is a soft cover text, 120
pages with extensive sketchs and full-color photographs. It includes
history, a bibliography and a pull-out map. This is a worthy addition to
any library collection or educational institution.

If you're interested, let me know. cat.# 49508 - $24.00

Shabbat Shalom, wendy
