Re: [ha-Safran] Žilvinas Beliauskas, 1958–2024

2024-07-26 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
This comes as a huge shock. I had the great pleasure of meeting Žilvinas
at several AJL Annual Conferences. I found him very friendly, warm,
down-to-earth, and so knowledgeable, not only about Lithuanian culture and
history, but about Jewish bibliography, literature, history, and culture in
general. I also had the honor of moderating two sessions at which he was a
presenter and found him very cooperative and easy to work with. I regret
that I never had the occasion to travel to Vilna and meet with him on his
home turf and in his element. I will miss him a great deal. My
condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. May his memory be for
a blessing.

Re: [ha-Safran] 2024 Fanny Goldstein Award

2024-04-28 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Gail,

Mazel-tov, *kol ha-kavod,* and *yasher-koyekh* on being selected the 2024
Fanny Goldstein Merit Award recipient. As stated in the message below by
2024 FGMA Chair and 2023 FGMA recipient, Rachel Leket-Mor, you are a most
worthy winner of this award. Your many years of contributions to, and hard
work in, AJL and to promote Judaica and general librarianship, Judaica in
general and, of course, to your longtime institution, LC, are admirable.
In recent years, of particular note, is your hard work on the AJL
Conference Support Committee, along with Lenore Bell.

It's been a pleasure knowing you during the three and a half decades of our
membership in AJL. I still recall meeting you at my first AJL annual
conference more than 30 years ago—hard to believe all that time has
passed!—and look forward to seeing you again in San Diego in June.

Congratulations and best wishes always,
Elliot

Re: [ha-Safran] Sad news

2023-07-18 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
I'm very sorry to hear of Adiare's passing. As others have mentioned, she
was a kind, very knowledgeable, and caring person. Adaire was one of the
first people I met when I went to my first AJL conference in Miami Beach in
1991, and was a great colleague, always very helpful, when I moved to
Southern California and joined AJLSC later that year. In 1995, when we
held the first joint AJL-ALA program in Chicago, she was one of several
excellent presenters in a session that dealt with a range of different
collections in which Adaire detailed the purpose, goals, programs, and
materials in the Wiesenthal Center. She will be greatly missed by her
family and, of course, the many friends and colleagues she made in AJL over
the decades. May her memory be for a blessing.

Re: [ha-Safran] Article on The new world

2023-07-14 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Amalia,

I'm glad I was able to be of some assistance. Yes, Esther Kreitman's story
is a very sad one. It is unfortunately true, and was especially so in her
day, that women authors weren't given the respect they deserved or taken
seriously, as for example, her two younger brothers were. I can only
imagine what great treasures were lost when, as the story goes, in
obedience to her mother, Kreitman tore up and threw out the window of a
train the hundreds of pages of work she had written from childhood on while
on her way to an arranged marriage to a diamond cutter in Antwerp. We were
fortunate that she continued to write and produce such great novels as
*Brilyantn *about the diamond trade in Antwerp and London before, during,
and after WWI. Who knows, however, how much more she could have
contributed to Yiddish and world literature had she been encouraged and
supported, especially in her youth?

Thanks for your question.

*Kol-tuv,*
Elliot

Amalia,

Here are just a few suggestions, some where *Di naye velt* is just
mentioned in passing, others in more detail, especially as regards Esther
Kreitman's works in general:

Barbara Harshav's English translation of Esther Kreitman's story in *Lilith
Magazine,* Spring 1991, can be found at
The New World – Lilith Magazine

I cite this further below, but it is perhaps the most promising:

*Fogel, Joshua A. Introduction to “The New World,” by Esther Kreitman. Yale
Review 73 (Summer 1984): 525-32.*

This item discusses the story, too:

‘The New World’, by Esther Singer Kreitman, translated by Barbara Harshav,
in Found Treasures, Stories by Yiddish Women Writers (1947), Edited by
Frieda Forman et al | ANZ LitLovers LitBlog

As does this: The Long Neglected Sister of the Singer Family - The New York
Times (nytimes.com)

Others:
*From Diamond Cutters to Dog Races:* Antwerp and London in the Work of
Esther Kreitman

Dafna Clifford
Prooftexts
Vol. 23, No. 3 (October 2003)
, pp. 320-337 (18
pages)
Published By: Indiana University Press

Link to the above (which offers only a "sneak peak,"):

>From Diamond Cutters to Dog Races: Antwerp and London in the Work of Esther
Kreitman on JSTOR

 The New World (theatredybbuk.org)
 Besides its
bibliography (not all about Esther Kreitman, there's a half hour video
program in the link called "The New World."

Articles and stories from *Lilith Magazine*:

   -

   "*Esther—The Unknown Sister*

" by Patty
   Grossman
   -

   "*Esther Singer Kreitman*

" by Clive Sinclair
   - “*Opening the Yiddish Pantheon to Women*

” by
Julia Wolf Mazow *[Esther Kreitman is only mentioned in the last
   paragraph]*

This article has an excellent bibliography, including these citations: Esther
Kreitman | Jewish Women's Archive (jwa.org)

Some more possibilities:

“The New World” (English translation of* Di Naye Velt*). Trans. by Joshua
A. Fogel. *Yale Review* 73 (Summer 1984): 525–532. [as cited above].

Re: [ha-Safran] Former AJL President Linda Lerman's death

2023-06-09 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
This is so sad. And (to me) unexpected as I had no idea she had been ill.
I have such fond memories of Linda during her presidency of AJL and after.
She was the president when I first joined the association in 1990. I also
used to see her at shul on my visits to Norwalk, Connecticut, where she was
a member of Beth El, the same congregation of which my mother was a member
for many years. I will never forget that Linda was always so kind to my
mom; she was one of several Beth El members who looked out for her to make
sure she was always comfortable and doing well.

Linda majored in Judaic studies and received her Masters in Library Science
from the University of Michigan. Among her several professional library
positions, she was Judaica librarian at Yale. She will be sorely missed.

I hope it's OK if I list the link to her obituary:

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/thehour/name/linda-lerman-obituary?id=52146685__;!!KGKeukY!wbzScmem06c3ZepNi_uf6t_7RmqXUi0laP6OeH3Cv0pFyWFXFhJDGftst-K5hRkChoLar8aNRz_RXAIFnigKFQ$

I couldn't say this any better than the closing words in the above:

“Her positive and loving life force will be missed by all who knew her.”

Re: [ha-Safran] AJL Announces 2023 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award Winner

2023-04-26 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Mazel tov, Racheli. Nice to see you recognized for all your work on behalf
of AJL and for Judaica librarianship, both upper case, i.e., *JL,* the
journal, and lower case, *l,* the profession.

Congratulations, too, to my two co-committee members, our chair, Lisa, and
last year's worthy FGMA recipient and Jackie. Always a good team to work
with as, of course, was Racheli as a member of the RAS leadership group.

2023-01-11 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Laurel,

Mazel-tov on your retirement! HUC is losing a great human resource. It
has been wonderful knowing you all these years going back to our Library
Conservation Management class at UK. It's hard to believe that that's so
many years ago. It was also always such a pleasure seeing you at AJL
conferences and having had the honor and pleasure serving on Council and
Board when you were both president and treasurer, both positions, which you
handled with grace, tact, skill, and vision. It was really nice to see you
at conference this past June in Philadelphia, and I hope we'll see you
again virtually and in person at upcoming get-togethers!

Wishing you much success and happiness in your upcoming endeavors!

Warmest regards,
Elliot

Michelle, as I said to Jackie, of all the student assistants I had over the
years, Arielle lasted the longest in the job by far and was so diligent and
detail-oriented in everything she did. Although we had only sporadic
communication
since she moved to Colorado, it is difficult to believe that we will not
only never meet again, but not exchange e-mails, phone calls, or meet
virtually either. I should also say that she loved Yiddish language and
culture. We first met when she came to a few of our weekly *Yidish
tish* sessions
at U-M. I think that it may be more than a week since Arielle passed away,
and I am not in contact with her mother or any other family members, but I
will certainly send any other information to *Hasafran* should I find out
anything about any memorial events. She will be missed.

[ha-Safran] Sad News

2022-10-25 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Last night, I got the very sad, shocking news that Arielle Sokol, a former
colleague in the Near East Division, Area Programs in the Graduate Library
at the University of Michigan and AJL member, recently passed away, a most
untimely passing.

For about five years, Arielle assisted me in developing and cataloging
materials in the Judaica collections of the Judaica unit and Jewish
Heritage Collection (in the Special Collections Library). Arielle was a
very hard worker who was self-directed and loved the work, especially in
the JHC, which is both a print and object collection. She wanted nothing
more than to get a permanent position working with Judaica in special
collections and/or archives as a librarian or archivist after she had
completed her Masters in Information Science at U-M. After graduation and
finishing up her job in the Library, Arielle moved to Colorado and worked
primarily in the field of music for which she had a special talent.

I received the news from a fellow participant in Itsik Mager's *"Purim
shpil"* in which Arielle and I and several others performed a few years ago
in the Ann Arbor Jewish Community Center. She had a beautiful singing
voice and was a gifted musician. I was planning to call her just a couple
of days ago. We had spoken and did a Google Meet a few months ago. How sad
to not be able to share that experience with her ever again.

As fellow New Yorkers, we also both shared a passion for the New York
Yankees. She once told me how she attended a game at Fenway Park, home of
the archrival Boston Red Sox, and got her brother and his girlfriend to
wear Yankee regalia in that very hostile anti-Yankee environment! Even
when I attended games there many years ago, I was very subtle about my
Yankee fandom, so I admire her bold, somewhat "crazy" actions in the enemy
den! But one thing anyone who knew her can attest to, Arielle was never
reticent about her views!

More information from her friends and colleagues at the InterHarmony
International Music Festival where she was an Assistant the past two years:

InterHarmony International Music Festival | Facebook

Such a vibrant and unique personality taken from us much too soon. May her
memory be for a blessing.

In sorrow,
Elliot

2022-09-01 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Peggy,

Thank you for your very nice thoughts. It's a pleasure to hear from you.
If I did a decent job in my position as RAS president, I attribute that to
your leadership as my predecessor. You offered superb guidance and
demonstrated by your dedication, diligence, hard work, and great example
how one should proceed in carrying out the mission and goals of a
professional association.

All the best,
Elliot

Re: [ha-Safran] AJL in Sept/Oct 2022 _American Libraries_

2022-09-01 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
It would be a big oversight if were to fail to mention that Suzi Dubin, AJL
President from 2008-2010, was instrumental in making AJL the 27ᵗʰ ALA
Affiliate in early 2010. Among the many great things Suzi did for AJL
before, during, and after her term as president was not only all the work
she put in to assure AJL would be an affiliated association of ALA and in
making sure all the required documentation was signed and submitted, but
she also insisted that the holder of the position of ALA liaison be an AJL
Council member (since 2014, reports to Council). I am most grateful for
all Suzi did and continues to do for AJL and Judaica librarianship. She
certainly deserves much credit, along with our heartfelt appreciation!
Thank you, Suzi!

ALA now has 33 affiliates:

Re: [ha-Safran] FW: The reason for warding the Fanny Goldstein Merit Award to Elliot Gertel

2022-08-31 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Thank you, Emily, for the very nice article you wrote about my circuitous path
to Judaica librarianship and to a career as a librarian in general. And
thank you, Amalia, for adding a note about my longtime activity and
positions in AJL, dating back some 32 years.

I was also delighted to read the interview with fellow AJL veteran, Peggy
Pearlstein, in the same issue of *AJL News and Reviews, *July | August 2022
(p. 5), "Who Knows Four? Peggy Pearlstein!" What an honor to share space
in the digital pages of the bulletin with Peggy. She was a great guide in
her position as R (now RAS) president during my time as vice-president of
R (2004-2006) when we served on the Judaica Reference and Bibliography
Awards Committee and then when I was RAS president (2006-2008). I could
not have asked for a better mentor and role model. Peggy is an
exemplary professional
and one of AJL's great human treasures!

Mazel-tov and *yasher koyekh,* Lisa! A well-earned honor by a fabulous,
hardworking longtime member of AJL, and a great person! You've been a
highly competent leader as the (inter)national (and in 2019, local)

and Judaica librarianship, as well as to the profession in general.

Congratulations also to Rachel and the 2022 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award

Re: [ha-Safran] [EXTERNAL] ALA endorsement

2022-04-06 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Fellow *Hasafran* Readers:

I find it both curious and revealing that Emily Drabinski is suddenly
attempting to backpedal from her own views, expressed quite overtly in a
number of forums. Those of you who watched AJL's conversation with her on
January 19ᵗʰ of this year may have noticed what makes it rather odd that
she is saying that I “misrepresented” her views is that everything she said
in response to my questions during that discussion as well as other
statements she has made quite clearly demonstrate that I have depicted her
views precisely as she herself presents them. If she's not putting those
extremist thoughts out in her platform for ALA, that does not negate their
existence.

At the aforementioned conversation around her candidacy, I posed the
following to Emily: at ALA Council meetings for at least three decades,
SRRT [Social Responsibilities Round Table] has been putting forward highly
biased, one-sided anti-Israel resolutions, often advancing unfounded
accusations such as alleged “destruction of Palestinian libraries” without
evidence that such archives and libraries even existed or the context of
the entire situation. These resolutions, by singling out Israel, are
absolutely unbalanced, especially since the advocates completely disregard
actual serious human rights violations by many of Israel's neighbors such
as Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia,
and terrorist organizations such ISIS or ISIL and Al Qaeda as well as the
oppression and ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya in Burma and the Uighurs in
China, to name just a few examples.

Instead of responding to my concerns, Emily turned it into an interrogation
of me as to what actions I took to try to counter these resolutions. Thus,
she evaded answering the question by trying to put me on the defensive.

Since she claims I “misrepresented” her position, does she deny having made
the statements below in her writings and taking the stands cited below by
signing petitions attacking Israel as an “apartheid” and “colonial” state
and endorsing BDS as well as academic boycotts of Israel, Israeli scholars,
and Israeli scholarship along with cultural exchanges?

To wit: In “City University of New York Community Statement of Solidarity
with the Palestinian People,” which Emily signed, she agrees with attacks
Israel as “apartheid” and pledges to:

Initiate, support, and amplify campaigns in solidarity with Palestinian
> calls for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli
> apartheid, at CUNY and in our wider communities. In particular, we echo
> the demands of the John Jay Student Letter to Demand BDS and Solidarity
> with Palestinian Resistance and stand with any and all student-led
> resolutions *demanding CUNY**’**s immediate divestment from companies
> that aid in Israeli colonization, occupation, and war crimes...*

...Demand that our individual campuses, and CUNY as a whole, endorse and
> support the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of
> Israel.

 CUNY SIGNATORIES:

 201. Emily Drabinski, Staff, Graduate Center

If you want to see more, please do a search for the following two websites:
*“Jadaliyya - CUNY Community Statement of Solidarity with the Palestinian
People”* echoing the above document’s calls with Emily Drabinski’s name on
it as well. A similar statement, linked off of the sites above, can be
found at *“Palestine and Praxis: Open Letter and Call to Action - Palestine
& Praxis: Scholars for Palestinian Freedom.” *

Emily Drabinski is also a signatory of *“**A call for editorial standards
on Palestine/Israel” in *
*#SayEthnicCleansing**,* which places the entire blame for the conflict in
Israel and Palestinian Arab territories on the Jewish state with such
messaging as “Don’t ‘both-sides’ a colonial power and the people resisting
it.”

In addition, Emily is the author of the following articles:
*“Teaching the Radical Catalog,”* (see esp. pp. 2-3) and
*“**Teaching Other Tongues”* in *Journal of Information Ethics* 20(2):42-55
 (see p.49, last 16 lines)

While I certainly do not advocate censorship, and Emily Drabinski is
absolutely entitled to her views and to be able to freely express them,
this is not merely an issue of free speech, which I firmly believe in.
What's at stake here is that ALA and librarianship as a profession are all
about finding and presenting well-supported, documented facts, not
disseminating propaganda to bolster a specific political point-of-view or
agenda. And, again, while I absolutely support her right to express her
views openly, that doesn't mean she should now attempt to cover them up and
try to distance herself from them because she's addressing a particular
audience. And, therefore, if I “misrepresented” her position, is she now
openly renouncing all the things she has said about Israel as in the items
cited above? Has she demanded that her signature be removed from the
anti-Israel petitions she signed as they no

[ha-Safran] Kelvin Watson for ALA

2022-04-05 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This is the reminder that I said last month I would send out close to the
conclusion of voting in the ALA election. For those who are current ALA
members, please note that the election for president-elect,
2022-23/president, 2023-24, treasurer, council members at-large, and a
constitutional amendment is nearly over. If you haven't yet voted, please
do so ASAP. *Voting ends tomorrow, Wednesday, April 6ᵗʰ at** 11:59 AM
Pacific Time (2:59 PM Eastern/1:59 PM Central/12:59 PM Mountain). *

I again urge you to vote for Kelvin Watson for the position of ALA
president for the period of 2023-24. Kelvin has the experience,
qualifications, and qualities required to be the leader of the world's
oldest and largest professional library association. He is a thoughtful,
considerate librarian, a great listener, and outstanding administrator with
a wealth of experience who is very sensitive to Jewish concerns.

He has worked in virtually every aspect of librarianship and bibliographic
fields from vendor to ALA Spectrum Scholar (the first to ever run for ALA
president) to library director, beginning with Ingram Library Services,
Borders, and The Library Corporation (TLC) to the USDA National
Agricultural Library to COO/senior vice president for Queens Library (New
York) to director of Broward County Libraries to name just a few.
Currently, Kelvin serves as executive director of the Las Vegas-Clark
County Library District. He is responsible for 25 branches with over 600
employees, a collection of 3.2 million items in a district that covers
8,000 square miles and oversees a budget of $77 million.

Among others, Kelvin Watson has been endorsed by these ALA Affiliates: the
Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) and the Chinese
American Librarians Association (CALA):

BCALA Endorses Kelvin Watson

 and CALA Endorses Kelvin Watson

Kelvin doesn't just talk about doing things, but takes action. He has a
long history of collaboration with diverse communities, including the
Jewish users of the library systems he has administered. Just one example:
when I mentioned to him that AJL has not been part of the annual Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Holiday Observance at ALA's midwinter conference and was
the only ALA ethnic affiliate that has been excluded from this event, he
immediately contacted the relevant organizers to make sure that AJL will be
included in this noteworthy observance in the future.

Please also *vote for Jim Neal for ALA Council* (please see just below)

Kelvin Watson is endorsed by these past ALA presidents: *Jim Neal* (also
running this year for an open ALA Councilor-at-large position), *Sari
Feldman,* ALA President 2015-2016 (like Jim Neal, a past keynote speaker at
ALA Conference); *Maureen Sullivan, *President of the Association of
College and Research Libraries (ACRL) 1998-1999 & ALA President 2012-2013; *Dr.
Camila A. Alire,* ALA President 2009-2010 & ACRL President 2004-2005; *Betty
Turock,* Ph.D., Past ALA President, Named ALA Honorary Member (2012),
highest honor in ALA; as well as these other prominent figures from a
variety of diverse positions in the library world:

Dear Colleagues:

I want to thank each of you who have attended our campaign forums, sent me
questions and feedback, and participated in this important election process.

Now more than ever, I believe that with new ideas on governance, new and
unique funding models, and new resources to support staff and the
profession, we can build on present successes to create real, measurable
change through the power of the ALA.

We must start by better advocating for library workers and establish new
career paths within our profession. To create a library workforce of the
future, we must broaden our library science degrees. This could include
courses in business, technology, the sciences, social work, and public
policy, which would expand our knowledge base and build advocacy from a
variety of life experiences and perspectives.

Pivoting toward diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA)
among library workers is critical in making our spaces more welcoming for
the communities we serve, who are more ethnically, racially, and
gender-diverse than ever before. In order to build trust and engagement,
they need to see themselves reflected in our libraries.

We must also demonstrate to our community stakeholders that libraries are
the best possible investment of tax dollars and philanthropy. Beyond our
buildings, we can demonstrate the value we bring when we meet those we
serve where they are. This means leveraging our collections (both physical
and digital) in places like parks, prisons, and hospitals. Attracting
investment in our infrastructure — human, digital, and bricks and mortar —
is achievable in every small town and big city. I look forward to showing
you how.

Throughout my career, beginning as a US Army officer, later in private
industry, and finally as a librarian, I have experienced the benefits of
leading, which includes organizing, collaborating, and forging a strategic
vision that elevates those I’ve served internally and externally.

My action plan has been formed by your specific goals and concerns, and if
elected, I will continue to seek out your ideas and solutions to the
challenges that we face. My plan includes:

   - Advocating for our role as defenders of intellectual freedom
   - Advocating for safety and fairness in our workplaces
   - Taking steps to realize greater DEIA, and social justice for all
   library workers
   - Leveraging my proven fiscal experience to raise funds and reinvest in
   our people and profession
   - Advocating for our public, school, academic, and special libraries
   - Supporting and furthering ALA’s sustainability goals

I am the first ALA Spectrum Scholar (2006) and ARL Diversity Participant
Scholar (2005, now Kaleidoscope) to run for this office. I believe this is
an affirmation of why diversity leadership and recruitment programs work,
and why we must expand them to attract a broader diverse ALA membership.

Most importantly, this election is about you and your hopes for the future
of ALA. As a country, and a profession, we face changes and challenges that
have not been seen in a generation. We must stand together as advocates for
what we believe in and not waver against a loud and vocal minority.

This is why I am asking for your vote for ALA President, so that with your
help, all staff in our ecosystem can work together to implement proven
models of success. I invite you to visit my website at

With sincere appreciation,

Kelvin Watson

[ha-Safran] For ALA Members: Please Vote for Kelvin Watson for ALA President

2022-03-13 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

For those who are current ALA members, please note that president,
treasurer, council members at-large, and a constitutional amendment are all
up for consideration. Ballots will begin being distributed tomorrow,
Monday, March 14ᵗʰ to all those who have been members since at least
January 31ˢᵗ of this year.

I urge you to vote for Kelvin Watson for the position of ALA president for
the period of 2023-24. Kelvin has the experience and qualities required to
be the leader of the world's oldest and largest professional library
association. He is a thoughtful, considerate librarian and administrator
with a wealth of experience and is very sensitive to Jewish concerns. He
has worked in virtually every aspect of librarianship from vendor to ALA
Spectrum Scholar to librarian to library director, beginning with Ingram
Library Services, Borders, and The Library Corporation (TLC) to the USDA
National Agricultural Library to COO/senior vice president for Queens
Library (New York) to director of the Broward County Libraries to name just
a few. Currently, Kelvin serves as executive director of the Las
Vegas-Clark County Library District. He is responsible for 25 branches
with over 600 employees, a collection of 3.2 million items in a district
that covers 8,000 square miles and oversees a budget of $77 million.

Kelvin doesn't just talk about doing things, but takes action. He has a
long history of collaboration with diverse communities, including the
Jewish users of the library systems he has supervised. For example, when I
mentioned to him that AJL had not been part of the annual Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Holiday Observance at ALA's midwinter conference and was the only
ALA ethnic affiliate that has been excluded from this event, he
immediately contacted the relevant organizers to make sure that AJL will be
included in this noteworthy observance in the future.

Hannah Handler Hostyk, co-president of Stirling Library Friends, Broward
County Library said, “He’s the first director to truly understand how key a
library is to a specific community in our county and has gone out of his
way to include the Jewish community as a community with specific needs...”

Sari Feldman, ALA President, 2015-2016, and a keynote speaker at AJL's 50ᵗʰ
anniversary Annual Conference said: “Kelvin is the ALA Presidential
candidate who looks toward and speaks for the future of the
Association...His organizational and entrepreneurial leadership extends
beyond the library and into the community, garnering him awards and
accolades for his contribution to the profession and community well-being...
Kelvin is a mentor to many, an effective spokesperson on library issues,
and the best candidate to lead ALA into the future. He has my highest
endorsement for ALA President, and I encourage you to vote for Kelvin Watson,
ALA President, 2023-2024.”

Kelvin Watson is also endorsed by these distinguished folks in the library
world: *Jim Neal,* University Librarian Emeritus, Columbia University and
past ALA president and treasurer, ALA Honorary Member (ALA's highest honor
and comparable to life membership) and a keynote speaker at AJL's 52ⁿᵈ
Annual Conference in New York; *Betty Turock,* past ALA president, ALA
Honorary Member (2012) and Professor and Dean Emerita, Rutgers
University; *Maureen
Sullivan,* president of the Association of College and Research Libraries
(ACRL) 1998-1999 and ALA president, 2012-2013; *Camila A. Alire,* Dean
Emerita, University of New Mexico and Colorado State University, ALA
President 2009-2010 and ACRL President 2004-2005; *Gary McCone, *head of
Library and Information Services, American Indian Higher Education
Consortium; *Makiba Foster,* Library Regional Manager for the African
American Research Library and Cultural Center, Broward County Library; *John
Szabo,* City Librarian, Los Angeles Public Library; *Sonia

Re: [ha-Safran] Amended Statement (REALLY Without Links) on the Candidacy of Emily Drabinski Who Is Running for ALA President

2022-01-31 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Fellow Hasafran Readers:
The prefatory *warning * that appeared in my two previous messages on this
topic *showed up again* because a dot com that I thought I had deleted was
still in there. I have taken it out and hope that the warning will now
disappear.

*There should be no hot links in here now* (except the “boiler plate” from
*Hasafran).* Sorry for the confusion and if it kept anyone from reading my
message originally sent on Friday, January 28ᵗʰ. *Today, Monday, 1/31/22
is the **last day** you can renew or join ALA to be eligible to vote in
this year**’**s election.* I believe ALA members must elect Kelvin Watson
and conversely make sure that Emily Drabinski is defeated. Please read why
below and in my earlier post last week about Kelvin Watson, who is a
terrific person, a true *mentsh!*

By the way, ALA has some very low membership rates (certainly compared to
the regular levels!) for several categories: LIS students, renewable at
student rate for up to 5 years, non-salaried/in transition" members (and
one can be making up to $30,ooo per year for this rate) to first year
memberships, which are good for two years at that rate. It's all on the
ALA website.

Sorry again for the repeated notices, but I want you to see them and not be
scared off by the warning. If you’re worried, and somehow any links are
still here, just don't click on them!

Thanks,
Elliot

[ha-Safran] Amended Statement (Without Links) on the Candidacy of Emily Drabinski Who Is Running for ALA President

Dear Fellow Hasafran Readers:

On Friday, I submitted a statement to this discussion list on the candidacy of
Emily Drabinski who is running for President of the American Library
Association. When the post appeared, it was prefaced with a caution that I
assume was automatically generated by OSU IT that warned that the e-mail I sent
“contains links to a hosting company that is frequented by scammers.” Those
were links, not e-mails that didn't ask for anyone's account information.
There is absolutely no risk in replying to or commenting on the e-mail I sent.
After all, the post was published in Hasafran. I also checked and read
everything in the links, and the only thing “scammy” therein are the toxic
messages in the content of some of the websites and documents.

All the same, for those who deleted my post without reading it—and I certainly
understand the caution one would take after seeing a warning like that enclosed
in red asterisks that preceded my message—I am resending the updated
communication below without the links. Unfortunately, this will make my
revised post much longer, which is why I had included links in the original
version: to keep the message as short as possible. If you contact me off list
and want them, I can send you the links.

On Thursday (January 27ᵗʰ), I issued an endorsement for Kelvin Watson for
President of ALA. There are dozens of reasons to vote for Kelvin, a few of
which I listed in my previous post, including support from others who know
about his amazing accomplishments.

I would be remiss, however, if I didn't also mention the “flip side” and
mention some of the unsettling aspects of his opponent for the top leadership
spot in ALA.

All those who participated in the Zoom interview with Emily Drabinski on
January 19, 2022 should have noticed that her candidacy is troubling.

Below are some quotes from Ms. Drabinski herself in her writings as well as
petitions, which she signed attacking Israel as an “apartheid” and “colonial”
state; she also endorses not only BDS, but academic boycotts of Israel, Israeli
scholars, and Israeli scholarship along with cultural exchanges.

In “City University of New York Community Statement of Solidarity with the
Palestinian People,” which Ms. Drabinski signed, she joins on to attacks Israel
as “apartheid” and pledges to:

Initiate, support, and amplify campaigns in solidarity with Palestinian calls
for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli apartheid, at CUNY
and in our wider communities. In particular, we echo the demands of the John
Jay Student Letter to Demand BDS and Solidarity with Palestinian Resistance and
stand with any and all student-led resolutions demanding CUNY’s immediate
divestment from companies that aid in Israeli colonization, occupation, and war
crimes...

...Demand that our individual campuses, and CUNY as a whole, endorse and
support the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of
Israel.

 CUNY SIGNATORIES:

 201. Emily Drabinski, Staff, Graduate Center

If you want to see more, please do a search for the following two websites
(links removed here):
“Jadaliyya - CUNY Community Statement of Solidarity with the Palestinian
People” echoing the above document's calls with Emily Drabinski's name on it as
well. A similar statement, linked off of the sites above, can be found at
“Palestine and Praxis: Open Letter and Call to Action - Palestine & Praxis:

Drabinski is also a signatory of “A call for editorial standards on
Palestine/Israel” in
#SayEthnicCleansing, which places the entire blame for the conflict in Israel
and Palestinian Arab territories on the Jewish state with such messaging as
“Don’t ‘both-sides’ a colonial power and the people resisting it.”

Some pushback can be found in this Jewish Journal article on the periodical's

While I certainly do not advocate censorship, this is not merely an issue of
free speech, which I firmly believe in, but that ALA and librarianship as a
profession are all about finding and presenting well-supported facts, not
disseminating propaganda to bolster a specific political point-of-view or
agenda.

What is perhaps most disturbing about Emily Drabinski's candidacy is that she
makes a point of claiming that she wants to steer clear of what pulls us apart
and concentrate on what we have in common, what brings us together. Yet she
proudly embraces and advances contentious issues such as the Social
Responsibility Round Tables's proclivity to concentrate only on what Israel
does to the exclusion of all of the repressive regimes surrounding Israel and
the very serious human rights violations of all other countries and terrorist
groups. How does this kind of politicking bring people together, and how is
this not the very source of the very divisiveness Emily Drabinski states she
wants to avoid? This strikes me as talking out of both sides of one's mouth.

If you are an ALA member and/or know people who are, I urge you to vote for
Kelvin Watson for ALA president and/or ask your friends, colleagues, and
acquaintances to do the same. He is a person who works with people to truly
advance the mission of ALA and is a proven leader who brings

[ha-Safran] Sad News

2022-01-28 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This is to convey the sad news that former AJL member Marlene Gitelman
passed away Monday evening.

For those of us who knew Marlene, who retired a few years ago, we were so
fortunate to have had her as a highly valued member of the Judaica Unit in
the Graduate Library of the University of Michigan. Marlene began working
in the Library's Near East Division in 2000. She was a Judaica cataloger
concentrating on Hebrew and Yiddish and also assisted me with
collection development. She was meticulous in everything she did.

Anyone who had the fortune to know, and especially work with, Marlene
couldn't help but notice her infectious smile, good humor, quiet strength,
and, of course, her skills, experience, and expertise. We couldn't have
asked for a better, more pleasant, patient, and harder working colleague
than she was.

Before coming to U-M, Marlene was the founder and head of the Hebrew Day
School at the Jewish Community Center in Ann Arbor where she worked for 18
years. She will be sorely missed.

As a long time friend of Marlene's so aptly and beautifully stated, "May
her dedication to our community be an inspiration for us." May her memory
be for a blessing.

More information as well as places to share memories and/or make donations
in Marlene's memory, if you so desire, can be found at

[ha-Safran] 2022 ALA Presidential Election

2022-01-27 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Earlier this month, Sally Stieglitz quoted from a letter, where Hannah
Handler Hostyk,
Co-President of the Stirling Library Friends, Broward County Library
in Florida, wrote a glowing endorsement for Kelvin Watson, a candidate for
the presidency of the American Library Association. The election takes
place from March 14ᵗʰ through April 6ᵗʰ and is to determine who will be
president-elect beginning in June of this year and ALA president for
2023-2024.

Within the last several weeks, AJL held Zoom interviews with the two
candidates running for this very important, highly visible office. I
listened and watched carefully. I can say unhesitatingly that Kelvin
Watson is extremely well qualified and has all the experience and qualities
that one could possibly look for in the leader of the world's oldest and
largest professional library association. He is a thoughtful, considerate
librarian and administrator with a wealth of experience and is very
sensitive to Jewish concerns. He has worked in virtually every aspect of
librarianship from vendor to ALA Spectrum Scholar to librarian to library
director, beginning with Ingram Library Services, Borders, and The Library
Corporation (TLC) to the USDA National Agricultural Library to COO/senior
vice president for Queens Library to director of the Broward County
Libraries to name just a few. Currently, Kelvin serves as executive
director of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. He is responsible
for 25 branches with over 600 employees, a collection of 3.2 million items
in a district that covers 8,000 square miles and oversees a budget of $77
million.

>From my interactions with Kelvin, I have to say, he listens carefully to
people, doesn't just talk about doing things, but takes action,
collaborates really well with very diverse communities, including the
Jewish users of the library systems he has supervised. Just yesterday, he
helped arrange it so that AJL will be invited to the Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Holiday Observance at ALA conferences. I just mentioned to him
once that AJL was the only ALA ethnic affiliate that has been excluded from
this annual event, and he immediately took action by
contacting the relevant people to make sure that AJL will be included in
the future.

But don't just take my word for it. Hannah Handler Hostyk said, “He’s the
first director to truly understand how key a library is to a specific
community in our county and has gone out of his way to include the Jewish
community as a community with specific needs...”

Here's what Sari Feldman, ALA President, 2015-2016, and a keynote speaker
at AJL's 5oᵗʰ anniversary Annual Conference said: “Kelvin is the ALA
Presidential candidate who looks toward and speaks for the future of the
Association...His organizational and entrepreneurial leadership extends
beyond the library and into the community, garnering him awards and
accolades for his contribution to the profession and community
well-being...Kelvin is a mentor to many, an effective spokesperson on
library issues, and the best candidate to lead ALA into the future. He has
my highest endorsement for ALA President, and I encourage you to vote for
Kelvin Watson, ALA President, 2023-2024.”

But besides all his great qualities, Kelvin Watson is truly a *mentsh!*

Oops! I must've forgotten basic arithmetic! Or was lured by the number 7,
the number of illegal lawn crossers! There are only 6 listings for
Mordecai Richler in the online catalog of the Haskell Free Library and
Opera House. Sorry for the error.

Re: [ha-Safran] American Libraries article on AJL Annual Conference

2021-07-12 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Sally!

Well done! A great, timely summing up of the recent digital AJL Virtual
Conference that covered salient features focusing on ephemeral collections
by the tone set at the very outset in Shalom Sabar's highly informative
Feinstein Lecture. You then followed up with details on COVID-19
documentation through to a number of widely varied programs that once again
made AJL Annual Conference, whether face-to-face, or online, such an
edifying and memorable event.

I hope your article will make it into the next print copy of *American
Libraries* and that you'll publish it, or a version thereof, in the
conference summary pages of the next *AJL News & Reviews.*

Re: [ha-Safran] ALA mid-winter

2021-01-27 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Donnie,

I agree that the AJL virtual digital conference last summer was a better
event than ALA Midwinter. One big reason for this is that AJL's gathering
is a smaller, more focused, and relevant event to most of us who are (or
were) Judaica library workers, volunteers, information professionals,
scholars, educators, students, vendors, curators, and other interested
parties. I disagree, however, that ALA Midwinter was of little value.

One thing to note is that Midwinter is more of a meeting than a
conference. Historically, it was primarily a time for ALA committees,
divisions, round tables, etc. to conduct business, and programs were a
bonus. And, ALA Annual Conference is much more programmatic. I, too, miss
networking and face-to-face interpersonal connections (besides
exploring different aspects of particular cities, especially cultural
amenities). All the same, these are things that we all have to deal with
during this terrible pandemic.

As for the ALA Midwinter Meeting that just happened (the last that will
ever have that title), I found a number of events valuable and even
inspiring. To name just a few:

"Ruby Bridges: Featured Speaker, Diversity in Publishing Stage"

Ruby Bridges is a civil rights activist, who at the age of six was the
> first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in New
> Orleans.

Ms. Bridges's story was poignant, disturbing, sad, hopeful, and
heartening. What she and thousands of African-American children endured
not all that long ago and many still do to this day, and the ongoing
struggle for equal rights in education as in many areas was spelled out
explicitly in this great session, which offered much to ponder.

"ALA President's Program and Awards featuring Joy Harjo"

Joy Harjo is an internationally-renowned musician, playwright, and author.
> Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. In
> June 2019, Harjo was appointed as the 23rd Poet Laureate in Poetry to the
> Library of Congress. She is the first Native American to hold the honor and
> was reappointed to a second term in April 2020.

Joy Harjo's story was stimulating and uplifting.

"Cicely Tyson: Featured Speaker" offered some fascinating insights into the
struggles and success stories of this very talented, award-winning star of
film and theater.

"ALA Youth Media Awards" while not as exciting as when held in person again
highlighted a great number of children's and teen book award winners with a
wide range of diversity, and, of course, the high point is the announcement
of the Sydney Taylor Book Awards. I was quite surprised that the
affiliates' awards were announced first with the STBA announcement coming
almost right after the event began, which was a nice change, actually.

And the "22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Virtual Holiday Observance
and Sunrise Celebration"

was filled with inspiring songs and stories. While I quite enjoyed the
numerous sections of a speech by Dr. King being recited by members (often
the presidents or other officers) of numerous divisions, round tables, and
affiliates, I would very much like to see participation of someone from AJL
and/or the ALA Jewish Information Committee in this signature ALA event. I
hope that our liaisons and others who have official roles in ALA will
contact the organizers of this session about including such engagement in
the future.

And, of course, there was "Inaugural National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda
Gorman reading from *Change Sings,* a lyrical picture book debut coming
September 2021." This young poet has almost overnight become an
international sensation and deservedly so!

On the whole, I think that this was a very good event. The above sessions
were just a sample of programs that I found worthwhile. I wouldn't compare
it to AJL's conference because of the element of relevance, but I was glad
to have taken part. I'm sorry that you were disappointed.

Elliot

2021-01-25 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Heidi,

Mazel-tov on your upcoming retirement. You have been such a strong and
very active member and supporter of AJL for over three decades. Your
contributions, especially in your realms of expertise, notably cataloging
and metadata, have been too numerous to begin to list. You have also been
very helpful in AJL, at Stanford, and way beyond in providing answers
outside of your "niche" as well by presenting timely and useful
information on research, humanities, and social sciences reference
inquiries among others. You were one of the first people I met at my very
first AJL Conference (née Convention) back in 1991 in Miami Beach, and it
was always a pleasure to see you each year at subsequent annual gatherings
at which I always learned something unique and valuable from your
presentations and just from casual conversations.

I hope that you will stay active in AJL where your many contributions have
always benefited your colleagues and the Association immeasurably. I
greatly appreciate having had the opportunity to work with you over the
years and value your friendship as well as your collegiality. I wish you
great success upon whatever roads you take going forward.

All the very best,
Elliot

[ha-Safran] AJL Membership Gala Cocktail Reception

2020-10-18 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
To All the Organizers of, and Key Participants in, Today's Reception and
Webinar:

*Yasher-koyekh! * It was both a very engaging way to reconnect with
colleagues and friends and a most informative session with Carla Hayden and
Oren Weinberg and our wonderful moderator Michelle Chesner. Kudos to all
who put it together and who took part.

Just one request and suggestion to make any future sessions like this even
better: please expand the social interaction portion to one hour and/or
have it *after* the webinar portion.

Thanks again,
Elliot

[ha-Safran] ALA Announces 2021 Midwinter Meeting will be Virtual

2020-08-12 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
*ALA announces 2021 Midwinter Meeting will be virtual*

[image: ALA logo white text on blue background]

The ALA Executive Board announced August 6 that the 2021 ALA Midwinter
Meeting & Exhibits scheduled for January 22–26 in Indianapolis will take
place virtually. “It is clear that as we continue to coexist with
coronavirus, we need to adjust our approach to meetings and events,” said
ALA President Julius C. Jefferson Jr. “In the last few months, we have
successfully pivoted our delivery to present ALA Virtual in June and ALA’s
‘Holding Space’ tour series this summer. Though we very much hoped to be
able to meet in person in Indianapolis, the health and safety of conference
attendees, ALA members and staff, exhibitors, and other stakeholders are
the priority.”...

Re: [ha-Safran] Support the National Library of Israel!

2020-08-09 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Arthur,

Thank you for this marvelous idea and for reminding us all so eloquently
and straightforwardly of some of the many things that NLI does for all of
us in Israel, the US, and across the globe, and thanks to Jackie for
pitching in. If everyone in AJL and especially all *Hasafran* readers, who
can afford it, gave a little, I'm sure it would help a lot.

[ha-Safran] AJL Digital Conference: Staying Connected

2020-07-03 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Many heartfelt thanks and much appreciation to the dedicated volunteer
organizers of the first-ever AJL virtual conference. As others have said
in previous posts, this was an amazing event from which I am certain we all
derived so much new knowledge and valuable information. Considering how
there was such a short turnaround time from when the original traditional
socially proximate conference was canceled, the results were particularly
striking! As Zachary noted, one drawback (a canceled
face-to-face-in-the-same-space event) turned into quite an asset as we got
to "meet" colleagues from places we haven't before and learn about their
incredible collections and latest projects. And the theme of the
conference, "Staying Connected" was absolutely fulfilled.

There are so many people to thank, so let's give a huge
*yasher-koyekh* and *kol
ha-kavod* to all the wonderful organizers listed in the Final Conference
Announcements e-mailed last night by Marcie Eskin & Rachel Kamin who
themselves as co-chairs of the Evanston physical conference deserve so much
praise and gratitude! And kudos as well to all the presenters, hosts,
technical experts, moderators, and everyone who participated.

Let's hope that we will not have a plague to contend with long before our
next annual conference in Chicago next year so that we can meet in a
conventional manner (unintended pun)!

I hope that all the hardworking organizers and participants can at least
take tomorrow off--if possible--catch their collective breath, and look
back with admiration and pride at the results of their work!

*Zise khaloymes, *everyone,
Elliot

Re: [ha-Safran] Heidi Rabinowitz presents at ALA Annual

2020-06-29 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
I actually found ALA Virtual a mostly pretty good conference. True, I did
find *some* of the speakers uninspiring, but I think that’s the case with
any such event.

I had no trouble getting into the live or on-demand sessions. If a session
was live, it usually became available in on-demand format after it was
over. I did find a few of those programs only became available many hours
or a day afterward, but was able to check back to view again or catch parts
that I missed of the sessions that interested me. There were a number of
engaging—and sometimes controversial—programs that I enjoyed. Of course,
Heidi’s session, was absolutely a highlight.
Wednesday, June 24
Although, like other keynote speakers, I found the closing session
featuring Natalie Portman, way too brief, I still enjoyed certain aspects
of it including her discussion of some of the changes in the depictions of
the critters in the stories in her debut children’s picture book, *Natalie
Portman’s Fables. * And she was interviewed by Betsy Bird, Collection
Development Manager, Evanston Public Library, who will be speaking at AJL
Digital on Thursday on “Reviewing and Evaluating Picture Books.”

In any case, I, too, would like to hear what others who took part in any
part of the online ALA conference thought.

See you all tomorrow (by the time this gets “published,” it will be
tomorrow here in the Eastern Time Zone, and probably everywhere else, too).

2020-06-27 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
I totally agree with you, Emily, and really appreciate all the effort that
you put into getting Heidi, and thus AJL, onto the ALA Ethnic and
Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table session, “EMIERT Chair’s
Program Promoting Multicultural Library Services in Virtual Spaces,” which
took place this morning at ALA Virtual.

All three participants, Heidi; K.C. Boyd, Library Media Specialist at
Jefferson Academy in the Washington, DC Public School system; and Andrea
Jamison, Librarian and Lecturer at Valparaiso University (Indiana) and
Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of EMIERT, articulated their jobs, patron base,
collections, charges, and challenges really well. While representing
“just” two ethnic communities (on the surface), Jewish and
African-American, they demonstrated the diversity and multiculturalism of
both and how meaningful their work and the resources that they highlighted
are. What they do is beneficial to all of their users, internal and
external. Andrea, while serving as the moderator, contributed much to the
discussion, not only with her questions but contributions to the
conversation. A really good session.

And Heidi proved once again why she is not only a Jewish kidlit meyven, but
so knowledgeable way beyond her “bailiwick!”

Great job! *Yasher-koyekh* and *kol ha-kavod* on your fabulous
presentation, Heidi, and Emily for making sure it happened!

See you all next week!

Re: [ha-Safran] Please welcome Megan Shulman!

2020-06-19 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Hello, Megan,

Welcome! Great to have you join AJL in such an active role.

If I'm not mistaken Medina is not far from Union City, which makes me think
of Stella Suberman, O"h (1922-2017), a presenter at the 1999 AJL Annual
Conference in Boca Raton where she spoke about her fascinating, slightly
fictionalized memoir (mostly changing names) with the somewhat troubling
title--at least to this Northerner!--*The Jew Store* (Chapel Hill, N.C.:
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 1998) about growing up Jewish in a rural
Northwestern Tennessee town with a population of 5,318 in the 1920s when
her family settled there. Stella made it clear that many small Southern
towns had dry goods stores that were called "Jew stores" back then. It's a
great depiction of her experiences being raised in the only Jewish family
in a small Southern town.

Thanks for pitching in with *AJL Reviews!*

Hope to "see" you at AJL Digital Conference in two weeks and future
in-person conferences.

Best regards,
Elliot

2020-06-19 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Megan,

Thank you for your really nice message!

Thanks very much also for the update on Union City and especially for the
history of Kisber's and the forward thinking of Mr. Kisber to take such a
courageous stand and actions at a time when that was not only ahead of the
time by challenging the prevailing racism and Jim Crow mores of the South,
but very dangerous to do! Amazing and heartwarming! Thanks to you, I
looked at Congregation B'nai Israel's website at
https://congregationbnai-israel.org/ and some of the images there. What a
rich history, founded in 1885 (the first congregation in Jackson dates to
the mid-1850s), and the building and the stained glass windows are indeed
striking. What really caught my eye--and seems to be unique--is that there
are stained glass windows on the Ark. If I ever have the fortune to find
myself in your area, I would definitely like to visit the synagogue. I
have long been a lover of historic architecture and especially of shul
buildings. I appreciate your telling me a bit about the neighborhood and
Jewish life there past and present. It very nicely supplements what I
learned from Stella.

Be well.

Elliot

Re: [ha-Safran] Fanny Goldstein Merit Award

2020-04-07 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Now, I think everyone sees (at least those rare people who haven't had the
pleasure of knowing him--it just reminds the rest of us!) why Zachary was
selected as the Fanny Goldstein Merit Award recipient this year. And, as
he explained in his career timeline where he enumerated just a small sample
of his accomplishments, he continues to make significant contributions to
the field of Judaic studies.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing Zachary since before I ever considered
becoming a librarian. This was while I was a research assistant for Deborah
Dash Moore at Yivo in late 1988 and through 1990, first in New York, then
“commuting” between the “metropolis” of Stamping Ground, Kentucky
(population 704 in 1990) and Yivo in New York, and then remotely while in
library school at the University of Kentucky. During that period, Zachary
was the Head Librarian at Yivo where he carefully oversaw and curated its
unique resources, some of which I got to handle. I consider myself very
fortunate to have had such a great role model as a colleague all these
years. He is not only a true scholar and the archetypal Judaica librarian,
but very approachable and willing to share his time, energy, and knowledge,
which is considerable.

I think that all of us in AJL as well as researchers in all aspects of
Jewish studies are the beneficiaries of Zachary Baker’s wisdom, knowledge,
and experience, which he has so generously shared over the decades with all
types of researchers and information seekers. Although, of course, it was
necessary, I only regret that we won’t be able to gather in Evanston to
enjoy hearing his inimitable style of presentation in person. I hope that
we will have that benefit at upcoming AJL conferences in the
not-too-distant future. *Mazl-tov un shkoyekh,* Zachary!

Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Passover! !אַ פֿרײלעכן פּסח

Re: [ha-Safran] 2020 AJL Conference cancelled

2020-03-31 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
At the Toronto AJL and American Library Association/Canadian Library
Association conferences in June of 2003, I coordinated a joint AJL/ALA
Jewish Information Committee/CLA program on Canadian Jewish Resources and
also chaired a second JIC program combined with a business meeting. We
were anticipating a much larger crowd--at least 100--for the joint session
on Jewish Canadiana than actually turned out. With that expectation in
mind, we were assigned a large hall for the program.

I vaguely recollect that *perhaps* both JIC sessions were moved and that
the ALA and CLA program books *might* not have reflected that. I do
remember having to go a long distance to at least one of the original sites
and putting a sign 0n the door to alert people of the changed venue as it
was still posted as set to take place in the first meeting room. I also
think that a few people who arrived late for the program told me that they
initially went to the other venue.

The joint session took place in the enormous Essex Ballroom of the Sheraton
Centre Toronto Hotel on Queen Street West and, without even having to try,
attendees could have practiced social distancing--even before that was a
thing--as only about 30 people showed up. By the way, Barry was one of the
six excellent presenters at this joint session, so it was disappointing
that we didn't draw a larger crowd, which may have been because a lot of
people stayed away due to the SARS epidemic. I know that I had to chair
more sessions than I was scheduled to do because several people, including
the JIC chair, stayed away. And the second JIC session, which was
originally supposed to be in the Royal York Hotel (I think) was held in the
King Edward Hotel.

While the threat of SARS kept a number of people away from the 2003
conferences in Toronto, scary as that was, Barry is absolutely right that
what we are confronted with now is truly staggering and what we faced then
just doesn't compare in scale. Not only were the attendees at AJL 2003
brave, but, of course, so were the organizers including Barry, co-chairs
Rosemary Cohen and Gloria Jacobs, and the entire convention committee.
And, it turned out to be a fabulous event.

Dina, Kathy, and Council made the right call in canceling this year's AJL
Annual Conference in Evanston. Kudos to Rachel and Marcie and the 2020 AJL
Annual Conference Committee for all their hard work and planning over the
past year or so. As someone who has been involved in planning a number of
conferences and programs, I know how difficult it is to do. While it's
very disappointing, calling off the AJL 2020 was the only sensible thing to
do under these circumstances.

One possible bright note: if the COVID-19 pandemic is subdued by next
year--let us hope that somehow it happens long before then--for the first
time in ALA's 144-year history, it scheduled its Annual Conference in the
same city for consecutive years, i.e., Chicago. So perhaps all the hard
work and planning of the 2020 AJL Conference Committee may still be put
into motion for 2021 in the Chicago area if they're willing, of course, and
Council decides we can go that route.

Re: [ha-Safran] The 2020 AJL Conference has been cancelled

2020-03-25 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
I applaud Dina, Kathy, and AJL Council for making this very difficult
decision as the health and safety of potential attendees is what has to be
foremost. There really was no other choice but to cancel the 2020 AJL
Conference.

Please note that ALA made the same tough choice yesterday and canceled the
2020 Annual Conference in Chicago:

*

The American Library Association has made the difficult decision to cancel
the Annual Conference & Exhibition scheduled for June 25-30, 2020, in
Chicago.

We wanted you to be among the first to hear the news
.
We are grateful to you for registering for the conference and know that you
share in our disappointment that we will not be meeting this summer.

We will be in touch in the coming days and weeks to discuss your
registration and provide information about potential alternative engagement
opportunities.
Thank you for your continued support of ALA and we ask that you be patient
with us as we work through this unprecedented situation.

[ha-Safran] 2020 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award Recipient

2020-03-14 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We have the distinct honor and pleasure of announcing that the 2020
recipient of the Fanny Goldstein Merit Award is Zachary M. Baker.

Zachary Baker provided over four decades of dedicated and scholarly service
to the field of Judaica librarianship and the Association of Jewish
Libraries beginning in 1976 at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in
New York City as a cataloger of Yiddish books until 1981 as well as a
genealogical reference librarian beginning around 1978. From 1981 to 1987,
he worked at the Montreal Jewish Public Library and was appointed as its head
of technical services circa 1983. From 1987-1999, Zachary returned to YIVO
as Head Librarian. Most recently, he served as Reinhard Family Curator of
Judaica and Hebraica Collections in the Stanford University Libraries from
1999-2018, a position from which he retired in January 2018. In addition,
from 2010 until his retirement, he was the Stanford Libraries’ Assistant
University Librarian for Collection Development for the Humanities and
Social Sciences. He has published numerous articles and bibliographies
relating to Yiddish and other areas of Jewish studies.

Zachary has been a very active member of AJL for as long as any of us can
remember--he attended his first AJL conference in 1976. Among his many
positions in AJL, he was president of the association from 1994-1996. He
was a leading member of the local AJL Annual Convention organizing
committee before, during, and following this event in 2005 when it took
place in Oakland, California. He was also a longtime contributing editor
and editor-in-chief of Judaica Librarianship. Zachary received an AJL
Judaica Reference honorable mention in 2018 for “Resources in Yiddish
Studies ”
published in: In Geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies.

Zachary is not only the consummate Judaica librarian but a leading scholar
of all things Judaic and is especially well-versed in Yiddish studies. His
contributions to AJL and the field are so abundant, it would be difficult
to even begin to take stock of them. He presented numerous papers at AJL
Conferences over the years, virtually annually, before his retirement.

On October 9. 2018, “Zachary M. Baker Presented with the Albert Nelson
Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

. He has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of
library science.” *Mazel-tov, yasher-koyekh, kol ha-kavod, and
congratulations* to Zachary who is a most worthy recipient of the Fanny
Goldstein Merit Award.

*The Fanny Goldstein Merit Award, named for the librarian, social activist,
and founder of National Jewish Book Month, is bestowed in recognition of
loyal and ongoing contributions to the Association of Jewish Libraries and
to the profession of Jewish librarianship.*

*Born on May 15, 1895 [some sources say 1888], Fanny Goldstein devoted her
life to books and community. She was the first female Judaica librarian and
the first woman to direct a branch library in Massachusetts, where she was
head of Boston's West End Branch for many years. A prominent figure in the
Boston Jewish community, she is best known as the founder of Jewish Book
Week, which began when Goldstein organized a display of Jewish books at the
Boston Public Library in 1925.*

Re: [ha-Safran] Groner-Wikler Award, 2020

2020-03-10 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Mazel-tov, Heidi, on winning the 2020 Groner-Wikler Scholarship! As Emily
and others have said, there is no one more deserving of this honor than
you, Heidi, for your years of passionate and indefatigable efforts on
behalf of Jewish children's literature. Heidi is truly a champion as well,
of course, as an expert of the genre.

Great choice and well-done!

*Yasher-koyekh* and* kol ha-kavod, *Heidi!

Elliot

Re: [ha-Safran] Upcoming retirement

2019-12-20 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
As someone who has had the honor and pleasure of working closely with Jim
on a number of AJL projects and programs, especially in RAS where we first
collaborated on the Judaica Reference and Bibliography Committee (JR), I
thank him for all of his hard work as a dedicated member of AJL and RAS and
as vice-chair and chair of the JR, vice-president and president of RAS
and, of course, AJL. In addition, he chaired several AJL Annual
Conferences, a difficult and very time- and energy-consuming challenge. I
could go on and on listing his all his accomplishments, but there are so
many, forgive me for not recalling them all. Brandeis and AJL are
definitely going to miss him.

So, Jim, AJL Annual Conference will not be the same without you, but I
personally want to wish you a very long, healthy, and happy retirement and
hope that I'll see you again somewhere down the line before too long.
Mazel-tov on your new "position." You deserve some down time, but knowing
you, I'll bet you'll find ways to be active and contribute more to both
Judaica and all-around librarianship as well, but don't feel compelled as
you've certainly done so much for Judaic studies over the years and deserve
a rest. I wish you much enjoyment and satisfaction in all your upcoming
endeavors. *Yasher-koyekh* and *kol ha-kavod, *Jim!

In appreciation and with my best wishes,
Elliot
