[ha-Safran] Israeli author/illustrator Miri Leshem-Pelly coming to the US in November

2024-07-18 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi all,
My friend Miri Leshem-Pelly, a well-known children's author and illustrator
from Israel is coming on book tour in November and she still has some open
dates, so I wanted to make sure schools and synagogues and public libraries
knew of the opportunity to invite her.

She will be touring with her new book A FEATHER, A PEBBLE, A SHELL (Published
by Kar-Ben and selected for PJ Library), a story about a girl’s hikes through
diverse, beautiful nature sites in Israel. It is perfect time to offer children
positive views of Israel with no politics involved and for them to meet an
engaging author from the country.

Tour plans include: California, North Carolina, Maryland, Massachusetts and
Vermont. Additional nearby states might still be included.

See the pictures below for information about the programs she offers and about
this book.
So - if you’d like her to visit your city / school / community - contact her at
her email m...@mirileshem.com

or through her facebook page: facebook.com/mirileshem

On her last tour to the US, she came to our school and did a wonderful program
for the kids.

Re: [ha-Safran] Travel suggestions for the San Diego conference?

2024-05-14 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi all,
Regarding travel arrangements to Southern California, I wanted to mention that
if anyone found it easier to fly into Burbank Airport, the Amtrak station is
within short walking distance, and there are 5 trains daily that go directly to
San Diego Old Town on the "Pacific Surfliner" which, after transiting from
Burbank to Los Angeles, eventually hugs the Pacific Ocean from Orange County to
San Diego and it is a lovely ride on a summer's day—taking approximately 3.5
hours, for a one way ticket of $37.00.
It could be an option for anyone coming in early Sunday morning. I am planning
to arrive this way (you need to get a cab or Uber from the San Diego station to
the hotel, which is 3 miles away) because I live close to Burbank.
The options for train travel from LAX airport are not worth it because first
you have to get yourself to downtown LA, which could be a pain...

HEREVILLE: A NEW JEWISH MUSICAL

Based on the acclaimed Hereville graphic novels by Barry Deutsch, this
family-friendly musical, also a 2023 JewCie Award nominee, centers on Mirka, an
11-year-old girl in a small Orthodox Jewish town. Her encounter with a witch
in the woods sets off a series of events that lead to a deep exploration of her
mother’s memory, her complex relationship with her stepmother, and the looming
threat of a meteor that could impact Hereville. The heart of the musical lies
in the love story between the stepmother and stepchild as they navigate the
dynamics of their blended family, making it a PG-rated production that deals
with themes of grief, loss, and challenging situations, appealing to family
audiences. Book by Robby Sandler with Jess Kaufman. November 9, 6:30 pm, ET.
Free.

Adaire was a mentor to everyone in AJLSC for so many years. We often would meet
in her home in the Pico-Robertson area. She taught a number of courses to help
those of us (like me) who were just starting out in the field. She moved to
Israel in retirement as she and her family had always wanted to do. I will
remember her fondly and donate to AJL in her honor.

For those of us who fondly recall the "Beni" series, School Library Journal has

Rachel Leket-Mor began her career as a Hebrew language editor at publishing
houses in Israel. She edited translated fiction, scholarly articles, and
monographs, mostly related to Jewish history, political science, and holocaust
studies, in collaboration with authors, translators, and in-house editors. She
began at Arizona State University (ASU) Library in 2002, first as the Jewish
studies bibliographer, building collections, supporting curriculum and
research, and providing specialized reference assistance. After two years in
this position, she worked as a subject librarian for Jewish studies, religious
studies, philosophy, and medieval and Renaissance studies until 2017 and is
currently the open stack collections curator. In this role, she provides
leadership for the selection, management, and disposition of print collections
and openly accessible resources. She also works with, trains, and guides
selectors on purchasing materials. She holds two master’s degrees, a Master in
Information Resources and Library Science from University of Arizona and an MA
in Translation Studies from Tel Aviv University.

Rachel’s involvement with the AJL began when she joined the Association in 2003
as a new Judaica librarian. Her professional involvement in the Association
began in 2007, when she co-chaired that year’s annual conference in Scottsdale,
Arizona, with Haim Gottschalk. The following year, she was elected vice
president of AJL’s Research, Archives, and Special Collections Division (RAS),
serving alongside RAS President Jim Rosenbloom (2008–2010). As RAS president
(2010–2012), she collaborated with Schools, Synagogues, and Centers Division
President Joyce Levine to conduct a member survey to study trends in Judaica
libraries and anticipate future developments across the AJL divisions. The
survey results, including the number of librarians in AJL libraries, their
educational level, age and years of service, and retirement plans, were used in
AJL strategic and leadership organizational planning. Rachel served on several
AJL strategic planning committees, from 2008 to 2010 and from 2013 to 2016, and
has served on the AJL Council since 2007 and on the Association’s Constitution
and Bylaws Committee since 2022.

In 2012, Rachel became the editor of Judaica Librarianship, AJL’s peer-reviewed
journal. A year later, she transferred the print-only publication to electronic
publishing, set up the electronic platform and a new peer-review process,
designed a new textual “nusaḥ,” and acquired the Adobe InDesign skills needed
for the production of scholarly works. She arranged for each issue to become
open access 12 months after publication and moved the journal to complete open
access when shifting it to a new electronic platform with the Open Journal
Systems in early 2020. Opening the journal to all resulted in a significantly
increased number of readers and better exposure to AJL. For the journal’s
fortieth anniversary this year, she has led an AJL volunteer team in a project
to upload the remainder of the journal’s back issues, following prior success
with making volumes 9–16/17 available online.

Lisa Silverman, award committee chair, commented, “On behalf of the Fanny
Goldstein Merit Award committee, we are proud to have the opportunity to honor
Rachel Leket-Mor as this year’s recipient of the Award. Rachel has contributed
so much to AJL, to the field of Judaica librarianship, and to librarianship as
a profession overall. Her work on the AJL journal Judaica Librarianship has
been invaluable to the organization. Rachel personifies the values and legacy
of the Award’s namesake, Fanny Goldstein, who devoted her

Does anyone want volumes 1 - 8 plus Volume 10 (for the cost of shipping in a
post office 2 day box)? It costs $22.00.

There are no dust jackets, but the volumes are in great condition--NOT
ex-library. Hardly read at all as far as I can tell!

[ha-Safran] I asked the new AI Chatbot what a Judaic Librarian is! Five seconds later...

2022-12-10 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
what is a judaic librarian?

A Judaic librarian is a librarian who specializes in the collection and
organization of materials related to Judaism and Jewish culture. This may
include books, manuscripts, artifacts, and other resources related to the
history, beliefs, and practices of the Jewish faith. Judaic librarians often
work in libraries at synagogues, Jewish community centers, or universities with
programs focused on Jewish studies. They may also work at museums or archives
that have collections related to Jewish history and culture.

Re: [ha-Safran] Association of Jewish Libraries Statement on Ukraine

2022-03-04 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Here are verified sites that would interest this list regarding ways to help
Ukrainian refugees, Jews and others, from a Los Angeles group called Jews
United for Democracy:

Many have asked for our suggestions of non-profit organizations aiding
Ukrainians impacted by Russia's invasion. While there are many outstanding
organizations mobilizing to bring humanitarian aid and assistance to those
wounded, displaced and otherwise impacted by the war, we are listing
organizations below with whom our leadership team has personal experience.

I. To aide Ukrainian Jews, many of whom are elderly survivors of the
holocaust, this
Fund was established by the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles; 100% of all monies
collected are being distributed to 4 different Jewish organizations which are
providing direct assistance to Ukraine's Jewish community. Donations are tax
deductible.

2. This organization, with whom we have direct contact, and whom our
leadership team has worked with over the past many years, is headquartered in
Poland and has created
 this Ukraine assistance fund
which distributes money to 14 grass roots organizations on the ground in
Ukraine and Poland . Donations made are not tax deductible in the US. FYI,
there are 4.5 zloty to the US dollar; $100 US= 450 zloty.

3. Direct Relief has established this special Ukraine fund
and is working directly with Ukraine’s Ministry of Health and other partners
in the region to provide requested medical aid, from oxygen concentrators to
critical care medicines – while preparing to offer longer-term medical aid to
people displaced or affected by the conflict. Donations are tax-deductible.

4. HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, is responding with HIAS emergency
humanitarian
assistance to those who are displaced. A HIAS response team is in
Poland assisting Ukrainians — Jews and others — as they cross into Poland.
Donations are tax-deductible.

Sunday:
HOW JUDEO-ARABIC LITERATURE AND CULTURE SHAPED JUDAISM AS WE KNOW IT

What is Judeo-Arabic and why is it so important to understanding Judaism today?
What we know today as “the Jewish bookshelf” was strongly shaped by an enormous
body of texts written in Judeo-Arabic, approximately between the tenth and
thirteenth centuries. Professor Goldstein will introduce the Judeo-Arabic
language and what was written in it, laying out the massive linguistic,
literary, and cultural changes that the Jewish communities of the Middle East
and Mediterranean experienced following the Islamic conquests of the seventh
century CE and the spread of Arabic throughout the region. Miriam Goldstein’s
research focuses on medieval Judeo-Arabic literature and interreligious
relations among Jews, Christians, and Muslims in the medieval Arabic-speaking
world. She is the author and editor of numerous books and articles on Arabic
and Judeo-Arabic literature, and is currently finishing a book devoted to the
Middle Eastern texts and contexts of the long-lived Jewish parody of the life
of Jesus, Toledot Yeshu. Dec. 12, 11:00 am, PST. Free.

FAMILY, HISTORY, MEMORY: NOTES ON SOME JEWISH GRAPHIC NOVELS

Why dig into the past—communal, familial—particularly when it is likely to
yield dark, horrible truths? What’s the connection between visual storytelling,
especially in the form of comics, and the piecing together of events from long
ago? In this talk, Tahneer Oksman, Associate Professor of Academic Writing,
Marymount Manhattan College will discuss four graphic memoirs (or, in other
words, non-fiction graphic novels): Rutu Modan’s The Property, Nora Krug’s
Belonging, Amy Kurzweil’s Flying Couch, and Miriam Katin’s Letting It Go.
Despite their differing plots and perspectives, these visual works all
powerfully evoke some of the most important, related questions about the
Holocaust and other 20th and 21st century atrocities. Ultimately, these texts
investigate what it means to adequately, and ethically, address the past,
including untold, and unseen, histories. Dec. 12, 10:00 am, PST. Free.

Re: [ha-Safran] in-person preschool storytime?

2021-12-02 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
 Heidi,
Along with Rachel's suggestions, you can also use a large monitor and show the
book on a screen. I often did that at storytime pre-covid (because it was fun)
and bought the book on kindle and used the Kindle cloud reader app on the
computer: read.amazon.com

It is a great way to discuss illustrations particularly because now everyone
can see them clearly.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] in-person preschool storytime?

Hi Heidi,

I’ve been leading in-person storytime for the 2, 3 and 4-year-old preschool
classes since last January, plus library visits for the PK-7th grade Religious
School classes since September. We have a statewide indoor mask mandate in
Illinois so I’m wearing a mask and all of the children (even the 2-year-olds!)
and staff are too. Last year, I only saw 1 preschool class per day. This
year, I see two preschool classes per day and up to 4 religious school classes
on Sunday mornings and 2-3 classes on Tuesday/Wednesday afternoons. I have my
3rd shot and vaccination rates are high in our community even among the 5-11
year olds.

Here are my suggestions for you – take any or all of them!

· Put a piece of tape on the floor so that the kids are sitting at
least 6 feet from you.

· Move storytime out of the library to a larger space in the synagogue
(like the social hall) so that everyone can spread out more.

· Shorten storytime to 15 minutes. According to our health department,
you are only considered a close contact of a positive case if you are within 6
feet of the person for 15 minutes or longer.

· Only schedule 1 class per day.

· Use a voice amplifier. I have this one and it works great:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XWV9CCQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8=1__;!!KGKeukY!jzaJ8wREtnxHHiScAYYo11XWEdRlIZqAGlL2-vHf_nqMKiXvwLmwcyT-EEwbzawAKJY$

It really saves your voice and makes it easier for everyone to hear you when
you’re wearing a mask, especially in a big room and/or with a larger group.

Good luck!

Hello, Heidi:

I have a few thoughts... we definitely all have different comfort levels with
covid. At our preschool, all kids and staff are masked - even if the masks are
not a perfect fit on younger children. For me, I feel protected with my mask on
and 3 vaccines and feel i'm taking an informed low risk in terms of exposure
and low level illness if I do get it - perhaps that's a false sense of security
but for me, it seems reasonable. But that's once a week, not every day.

I do read stories with my mask on and don't seem to have a problem. I believe
you should wear a mask in person or at least a shield. I can generally project
well and be animated pretty well even with the mask on but i'm only doing it
once a week. I find cloth masks much more comfortable.

When I did storytime on zoom last year, I spotlighted my face but pointed an
external camera at the book page or used ebooks so that the pictures were nice
and close. I also only read for 10-15 minutes, shorter periods of time than
in-person.

I do not find it as satisfying personally when the camera is not close enough
to the illustrations and text when I observe other storytimes, which I would
think could be the same for young children unless you are really super dramatic
and able to hold the book up to the camera (which i have trouble doing). But
for some reason, seeing someone reading while sitting in a chair onscreen - i
do not feel a connection. Not sure if that's a helpful suggestion or not. Maybe
you can compromise on in-person once a week and zoom the other days.

Good luck and happy chanukah!

Toby

[ha-Safran] New Mexico Trip was so great I'm doing another one!

2021-11-05 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi Safranim,

I am pleased to report that the Road Scholar trip I coordinated with a group of
24 librarians, book group members, and spouses, was fabulous-- and I have
decided to form another group next fall for all those who had contacted me that
they would have come, but...Covid.

We just returned, and we all enjoyed the lectures, museums, shops, restaurants
and beauty of the Santa Fe and Taos area, and the weather was wonderful. There
were no Covid-related issues and the trip, which was run by Road Scholar was
very well organized.

The subject of the trip is "Learning About the Crypto-Jews and Conversos of New
Mexico". Our lectures were excellent and we learned so much. We even held a
book group after reading the novel, Gateway to the Moon, by Mary Morris.

If you are interested in coming next year, the dates are OCTOBER 23 - 28,
2022. The website for more information is:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.roadscholar.org/find-an-adventure/22854/new-mexico-s-conversos-and-crypto-jews-in-santa-fe__;!!KGKeukY!nPbTsI_NnERxKPqHqNZXNJ3_SkhDjf9pU2NWhY0m-vxJgWE48AqS7SWMfwaFQt88j93lpxlKkDy9EjA$

We are accepting 21 people only on this private group and the fee to reserve a
spot is $100, which is refundable up to a certain date. But once it sells out,
we will create a waiting list. Please email me if you want to be on my list for
information, etc, as I create a new group.

Here's a photo of myself and librarian Annette Goldsmith at the museum in Santa
Fe taken by Annette's husband, Don.

[ha-Safran] Trip to Santa Fe - still open!

2021-09-13 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi Safranim,
This is a reminder email that the upcoming Road Scholar trip with a bunch of
librarians and educators to Santa Fe, New Mexico has 3 spots left and I would
love to fill them.

As of now, there are 19 very smart and interesting people coming along with me
for a 6- day trip from October 24 - 29th to learn about "New Mexico's Conversos
and Crypto Jews of Santa Fe" and also see the sights of Santa Fe and Taos.

This trip is one of the most popular ones offered by Road Scholar and the
public ones are sold out until next summer or later. Here are some great
reasons to go:

  * New Mexico is the 5th most vaccinated state, and Santa Fe county is one
of the highest vaccinated in the country
  * We will be staying in the beautiful Drury Hotel
  * Our group leader will be Rabbi Jordi Gendra-Molina, originally from
Spain, along with 4 other speakers and scholars, including Dr. Ron Hart, who
has written the most interesting book on this topic.
  * Road Scholar requires all participants and staff to be vaccinated and we
can choose to have meals outside. Most meals are included in the cost.
  * The people on this tour have mostly met on Zoom and we are all very
excited to get away for a while these days! We will have one more virtual
meet-up before the trip begins.

Please take a look at the website with all the info and please let me know if
you are interested, or feel free to forward to anyone else:

Re: [ha-Safran] question about kippot

2021-08-06 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hello Safranim,
I received many replies to my questions about kippot in children's books and I
had started a document where I was adding everyone's comments, but it got very
long and I began to realize that many replies were similar anyway. So, for
those of you who were interested in the general consensus of what I received
here are the answers in a nutshell, in red:

  1. Would Joachim Prinz be wearing a kippa at any time in public? Probably
not. It is wrong that he would be depicted in a way that is not historically
accurate, even if he wore one at shul, or at study.
  2. Do any Jews affiliated with the Reform or Progressive movements ever wear
kippot in public? Rarely, but some do.
  3. Do Reform Jews wear kippot at all times in the synagogue? Do they have
kids wear them at Hebrew school? Kids rarely wear them at Hebrew school, but
they do during services, as do the parents, often women do, too.
  4. Would a book be too confusing to children if some men at, say, a sukkot
gathering, wear a kippah and some do not? Not confusing to most kids, could be
confusing to more observant Jews who are more used to seeing that.
  5. Do Orthodox or more observant denominations only buy picture books if all
the men and boys wear kippot? Or do they not buy picture books from secular
publishers anyway? Orthodox libraries will buy secular books as long as they
are not about Jewish themes. For Jewish practices, they buy books reflecting
their level of observance. If the book is related to Jewish practice, then they
would buy books where males are wearing kippot.
  6. When was the practice of wearing knitted or patterned kippot begun in
North America? No one was able to lead me to anything definitive on this, but
the best guesses by people are that the practice began in the 1960's or 70's.

Kalaniot books, along with as many Jewish titles from all other publishers that
we can find, are reviewed in AJL News and Reviews, however, since it is a
quarterly publication, sometimes there is a lag re publication date. You can

Re: [ha-Safran] Israeli Stream TV subscription: Known as Izzy?

2021-05-20 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
I subscribe to IZZY and it is great! I access it on my Roku device along with
some other channels. They have many interesting shows and documentaries and
they are a start-up and I hope they succeed.

They send out a weekly email with the new shows they have added--all in Hebrew
with subtitles. Some of these shows are hard to find elsewhere. The guy who
runs it is Josh Hoffman, who was originally from LA. Here are some links to
some reviews he had once sent me:

[ha-Safran] October Trip to Santa Fe -- 5 spots left!

2021-05-09 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi Safranim,
Last month I posted about an October trip to Santa Fe New Mexico that I am
leading by the Road Scholar travel organization. We have limited the trip to 22
people and as of now there are 5 places left, so I wanted to post one more
time. The trip is entitled: "New Mexico's Conversos and Crypto-Jews in Santa
Fe" and it is guided by Rabbi Jordi Genra-Molina, born in Spain, and an expert
in Medieval Jewish History. A number of AJL librarians are now registered for
the trip and I hope you will take a look at the website now that things are
opening up. (Everyone must be vaccinated on this tour.) I believe it will be a
wonderful experience--here is the website with all the information:

Mazal tov to Rachel ! I can’t think of a more deserving librarian. I was sure
that she has received the award ages ago. When I first met Rachel she was
still in Detroit, I imagined her as AJL president, but then she concentrated
on her family. Later she turned down the nomination to become SSC president.

I turn to her advise often and always get help. I never miss her presentations
at the confernces.

Rachel, AJL is lucky to have you,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2021 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award Winner Announced

[cid:image001.png@01D7383F.41A05280]

In advance of the 2021 Virtual Conference, the Association of Jewish Libraries
is pleased to announce that longtime member Rachel Kamin has been named the
2021 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award Winner. “On behalf of the Fanny Goldstein
Merit Award committee, we are proud to have been given the opportunity to honor
Rachel Kamin as this year’s recipient of the Award. Over the years, Rachel has
contributed so much to the Association of Jewish Libraries, to the field of
Judaica librarianship, and to librarianship as a profession overall. On very
short notice and under challenging circumstances, she played a pivotal role in
transforming AJL’s 2020 conference from an in-person to a highly successful
virtual event. Rachel’s passionate devotion to public service is a model for us
all, and she truly personifies the values and legacy of the Award’s namesake,
Fanny Goldstein.” said committee chair Zachary Baker.

The Fanny Goldstein Merit Award, named for the librarian, social activist and
founder of National Jewish Book Month, is bestowed in recognition of loyal and
ongoing contributions to the Association Of Jewish Libraries and to the
profession of Judaica librarianship.

Born on May 15, 1895 [some sources say 1888], Fanny Goldstein devoted her life
to books and community. She was the first female Judaica librarian and the
first woman to direct a branch library in Massachusetts, where she was head of
Boston's West End Branch for many years. A prominent figure in the Boston
Jewish community, she is best known as the founder of Jewish Book Week, which
began when Goldstein organized a display of Jewish books at the Boston Public
Library in 1925.

Rachel Kamin has been a synagogue librarian for over 20 years and is currently
the Director of the Joseph and Mae Gray Cultural & Learning Center at North
Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park, Illinois. She serves on the
Association of Jewish Libraries New Jewish Fiction Award Committee and
contributes articles and book reviews to BookLinks, School Library Journal,
Jewish Book World, Judaica Librarianship, Library Journal, and AJL Reviews.
She contributed a chapter on recommended children’s books to The Tot Shabbat
Handbook: A Practical Guide for Engaging Young Families in Congregational Life
edited by Paula Feldstein (URJ Press, 2010) and co-authored a chapter about
Jewish children’s literature for Reading and Teaching with Diverse Nonfiction
Children’s Books: Representations and Possibilities, to be published in the
summer of 2021 by the National Council for Teachers of English. She facilitates
book discussions for five Chicago area synagogues as well as for other
organizations and private groups. Rachel holds a BA in history from Grinnell
College and a master’s degree in library and information science from the
University of Michigan.

In addition, Rachel has been a member of AJL for at least 20 years and has
attended the AJL Conference regularly. After the decision was made to not hold
the conference live in Chicago in 2020 as planned, Rachel restructured

[ha-Safran] Do you know the way to Santa Fe?

2021-03-17 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi safranim,
I have been itching to go somewhere and think that October may be long enough
away to be able to do so safely. I have always been interested in a trip to
Santa Fe, New Mexico and have been working with the Road Scholar travel
organization to create a trip for my book club from October 24 - 29. The name
of the trip is "NEW MEXICO'S CONVERSOS AND CRYPTO-JEWS IN SANTA FE" and the
trip is guided by Rabbi Jordi Gendra-Molina. You don't have to be in my book
club to come--it is open to anyone. (I do have to specify that vegetarian food
will be available, but kosher meals are not offered. There is also insurance
you can get in case you sign up and then cancel.)

All the information is at this link:

Re: [ha-Safran] Trying to reach the Central Cataloging Service for Libraries of Judaica

2021-02-12 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hello Esther,
Long ago, the Sinai Temple Library under the leadership of Rita Frischer and
Rachel Glasser, developed a fee-based service called the "Central Cataloging
Service" which provided Elazar cataloging numbers and subject headings for
small libraries that were using the Elazar classification system. After Rita
retired and I took over that position, we eventually phased out the service and
it no longer exists. I no longer work with Sinai Temple, but please feel free
to contact me if you need help with Elazar cataloging and I will be happy to
advise you.

[ha-Safran] Free digital Jewish Kids' Coloring book!

2020-12-09 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi all,
My friend, author Jeff Gottesfeld, has written a labor-of-love project for
children during Covid times that he explains below:

"My thought was that Jewish life is communal. But there are still ways for kids
and families to find Jewish joy at home. To help that cause, and to give
parents plenty of ideas, I wrote a free, downloadable PDF coloring book for
kids: When We Can't Go Out: Jewish Joy at Home. It has glorious and funny
illustrations by Rhode Island School of Design student Jonah Cohen, and is
designed by Julie Greller, who is a childhood chum. We're all Jewish, it's
suitable for all streams of Jewish practice, and reflects the diversity of
Judaism. It's our gift to the community and our kids.

Our hope is that parents will download and print this free book for kids to
read, color, and enjoy. I attach a copy here for your ease and sharing. The
shareable download link:

[ha-Safran] Jewish Book Group at LMU

2020-11-30 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hey all--I am teaching a famous Grace Paley short story on Sunday Dec 6 at
Loyola Marymount University at a free zoom class--see below and sign up if
interested!

LMU SUNDAY JEWISH BOOK GROUP: “THE LOUDEST VOICE”
Join Loyola Marymount University’s Jewish Book Group sponsored by the Hannon
Library for a discussion of the short story “The Loudest Voice” by Grace Paley,
led by Lisa Silverman, former Library Director at AJU’s Burton Sperber Jewish
Community Library. In Paley’s 1959 story, Shirley Abramowitz, a Jewish student
in a public elementary school, is asked to be the narrator of her school’s
Christmas pageant. In depicting American Jews trying to navigate the Christmas
season, this story points to the many dilemmas faced by Jews and other
immigrants living as minorities in America. (The story is available at this
link:

Should we preserve, research, and exhibit in our museums only the works of art
and visual materials of the "glorious past"? As a scholar of Jewish art and
material culture, I was always surprised to see that a simple Hanukkah lamp
produced 300-400 years ago is admired by museum visitors and scholars alike
while Judaic items of today are often thrown to the garbage after they are
used. The museums' curators with whom I discussed this issue dismissed it as
something not worth the efforts and money. As a result, some 25 years ago I
started to collect and study Jewish ephemera of today. Thus, for example, I
asked all my friends and family to save for me Rosh ha-Shanah cards - and soon
discovered that the iconography of the cards and the messages on them change on
a year by year basis. Shortly thereafter appeared the first essay ever on the
history of the Jewish new year cards from their first appearance to today. Many
other categories followed - Simchat Torah flags, Tzedakah boxes, kosher wine
labels, amulets, wedding invitations (as well as other events in the life
cycle), yahrzeit candles, ex libris, dreidels, sukkah decorations, Haggadot,
pamphlets, postcards, etc., etc. There are many strategies on how to get the
items - including looking through Jerusalem Genizot, items that are thrown away
by children of deceased relatives, products in the supermarkets issued for
special occasions, etc. Each category presents the richness of the field and
how much it can teach us about Jewish society. By now, my students
enthusiastically continue to develop this field, and there is hardly any Judaic
museum or major Jewish library, whether in Israel or abroad, that doesn't
understand the importance of ephemera for the present and the future.

Shalom Sabar is Professor of Jewish Art and Folklore at the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem. Sabar is the last Jewish baby born and circumcised in the ages
old neo-Aramaic speaking Kurdish-Jewish community of Zakho. He earned his PhD
in Art History from UCLA (1987), writing on the illustrated marriage contracts
of the Jews in Renaissance and Baroque Italy. His research joins together the
disciplines of art history and folklore, highlighting issues pertaining to the

[ha-Safran] looking for online Zoom-type programs

2020-08-24 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hello Safranim--I am working with the Jewish Journal to compile a weekly list
of online Jewish educational programs that are offered for free. I poked
around the internet and found a lot of places who have offered, or may offer, a
program here and there, and some who do it more often. We are particularly
looking for places around the world that may be new to readers. Of course, we
would need it to be in English but I suppose Hebrew would be ok.
If you get notifications from an organization (or if your organization would
like to be included), please see the list below and email me the name and
website of the place you think I should add.
thank you,

[ha-Safran] Career changes in Pandemic times....

2020-07-28 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hello Safranim,
As we all know, librarians are one of the professions suffering at this time
because our libraries are closed-- and working from home doesn't really cut it.
So the news is that I have been laid off from my position of library director
of the Sperber Jewish Community Library and the position has been eliminated.
The operation of the library and the new digital platform called California
Jewish Library Consortium will be absorbed into the university's academic
library.

HOWEVERI am looking forward to beginning my new Library Consulting
business! I am going to create a website where I will be posting classes,
reviews, and Zoom book clubs and offering various services to synagogue
libraries, JCC's and other small libraries around the country, including
guidance on how to move their collections to a digital platform. This is a
perfect time for smaller libraries to begin to consider this type of move.

My old email address is no longer active, so please change my contact info to
this new email:
lisa.silverman2...@outlook.com.

I am still planning to be very involved on the AJL Council and will inform you
when I have my website up and going. In the meantime, feel free to contact me
with any ideas or suggestions.

Stay well everyone,
Lisa Silverman

2020-07-01 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Thanks, everyone!

I will offer the patron the choice between:

Rescue in Denmark by Harold Flender 1963

A Night of Watching, by Elliott Arnold Published by Scribner in 1967.

The other titles suggested were mostly published after 1970, so they would not
be suitable to what she is looking for.
Thanks, all!

[ha-Safran] One of those patron questions....

2020-06-30 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Does anyone want to take a stab at answering this question I got from a patron?

"I am trying to remember the name of a novel I read in the 1960’s. It was the
story of the evacuation of Jewish people at night by boat from Denmark during
the Holocaust. I think it was a paperback book. Do you have any leads?"

Email me if you think you have an idea.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Heidi Rabinowitz presents at ALA Annual

[EXTERNAL]

I just watched Heidi present with K.C. Boyd at the EMIERT Chair's Program
Promoting Multicultural Library Services in Virtual Spaces at the ALA digital
conference. It was a great presentation, and the comments in the Q space
were very positive. EMIERT is planning to make the presentation available on
their website, so I will send the link so everyone can see it.

How did this happen? I pushed to be on the EMIERT Program Committee. The
Chair's Program was already set and was to be a very theoretical program about
ethnic materials. When everything changed, the in-person program wouldn't work
online, and the committee had to come up with a new program quickly, I
suggested Heidi to join a DC school librarian to talk about this topic, and we
are so lucky she agreed.

I can't tell you how happy I am with how the program turned out. It really
brought out the diversity of materials to have speakers from such different
backgrounds.

Thank you, Heidi, for stepping up and preparing for this program on short
notice that will reach a broad audience. You are a superstar.

[ha-Safran] Very Exciting E-book News from California!

2020-05-10 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi all,
I wanted to make sure everyone knew about the new "California Jewish Libraries
Digital Book Consortium" on Overdrive. The Sperber Jewish Community Library in
Los Angeles has partnered with the Jewish Community Library of San Francisco to
create a consortium of our two libraries for the purposes of e-book and audio
lending.

We are hoping that other libraries in California will be interested in joining
and if so, please email me. (Unfortunately, we have learned that we are only
allowed to lend to patrons who live within driving distance of our individual
libraries and therefore, your address must be in California. This is the
agreement Overdrive has made with publishers to allow a consortium.)

For those interested in seeing our new website, please visit:

Serendipitous timing: S.F. Jewish library launches ebook program –
J.
Jews stuck inside these days now have something new to keep them occupied. The
Jewish Community Library in San Francisco has just launched its ebook and
audiobook collection, which will let library patrons download books at home.
It’s fortuitous timing, although coincidental. “We were definitely not
designing this with self-quarantine in mind!” said director Howard …

Re: [ha-Safran] Book - Hanukkah Baby- question

2019-11-14 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Sally,
We will be reviewing this “book” in the next AJL Reviews. I am looking at it
now and I can classify it as a “paper board book” if there is such a thing. The
paper is bendable and does not seem to tear easily, thus the popular series is
called “Indestructibles.” The illustrations are certainly very cute, but I
would doubt they will be doing Jewish holidays any time soon. Maybe Passover.
There are dozens of baby-friendly topics in this series, and not all of them
are by the same illustrator.

One thing to note of interest: all males, babies, kids and adults, are wearing
black kippot at all times in the illustrations.

[ha-Safran] Jewish Journal kid's reviews online

2019-09-26 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi all,
I have written some reviews of children's books I liked in this week's Jewish
Journal :
https://jewishjournal.com/culture/books/304911/for-kids-a-few-good-books-for-a-good-year/

(I still can't figure out why they feel the need to place hugely enlarged
photos of the book covers, but there's not a thing I can do about it!)

Best wishes to everyone for a happy and healthy new year,

[ha-Safran] FW: Mordicai Gerstein: In Memoriam

2019-09-25 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
I am forwarding Rich Michelson’s email from today. Mordecai Gerstein was a 2006
Sydney Taylor Award winner for Sholem’s Treasure, and has written and
illustrated many other distinguished books so many of us have in our libraries.

Mordicai Gerstein at R. Michelson Galleries

Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dear friend and
Caldecott winning artist, Mordicai Gerstein. Mordicai will be remembered for
his warm heart, joyful and kind nature and of course, his extraordinary
illustrations. Our sympathy goes out to his wonderful wife of thirty-five
years, Susan Yard Harris, and his children; Aram, and Risa Faye.

R. Michelson Galleries will be honoring Mordicai's work with a special tribute
at the 30th Annual Children's Illustration Celebration on November 10th.
Please join us as we celebrate and remember our long time friend.

Mordicai Gerstein and Rich Michelson in 2009

On a personal note, I will miss our monthly lunches discussing poetry, fiction,
and children's book industry gossip; along with stories about our shared
passion: the many bicycle trip adventures we each enjoyed. Mordicai was one of
the first illustrators to join R. Michelson Galleries, and one of the kindest,
gentlest men I have ever met. May his memory be a blessing.

EXCITING NEWS! The Whizin Center for Continuing Education at American Jewish
University and AJL present a special screening of the acclaimed 2019
documentary, Who Will Write Our History on Sunday evening, June 16, at 7:30, at
the Warner Center Marriott Hotel. Tickets are not included in conference
registration, so please purchase your $15 ticket at this link:

https://www.aju.edu/whizin-center-continuing-education/events/Film-Screening--Discussion-Who-Will-Write-Our-History-0

This includes a special appearance by producer/director Roberta Grossman in
conversation with noted Holocaust scholar Dr. Michael Berenbaum.

This critically acclaimed documentary is about a clandestine group of scholars
and community leaders within the Warsaw Ghetto who fought the Nazis with pen
and paper by hiding treasured archives that were found after the war. The film
mixes these writings with new interviews, rarely seen footage and stunning
dramatizations to transport us inside the Ghetto and the lives of these
courageous resistance fighters. They defied their murderous enemy with the
ultimate weapon - the truth - and risked everything so that their archive would
survive the war, even if they did not. (More info about the film can be found
at: https://whowillwriteourhistory.com/)

Please support our efforts to bring you a special Sunday evening conference
program and help defray the costs by purchasing a ticket!

Would you like to present a "PechaKucha" at the SSC Roundtable Session?

A PechaKucha is a simple slide presentation format where you show 20 images,
each for about 20 seconds. You teach, share or talk along to the images.

We are looking for a few more presenters who have something to share! The SSC
session will take place on Wednesday, June 19th, from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM at the
Warner Center Marriott Hotel.

Presently the topics include:
1. How to use Pinterest to find ideas for family programming
2. How to prepare middle school students for needed high school library skills
3. How to order and display free photographic exhibits on Diaspora Jewish
communities from Israel's Beit HaTfutsot Museum.

Respond to this email if you would like to volunteer!

People have been asking us about the optional after-conference tours.

Here are some FAQ's:

1. What is the timing of the tours?
The tour busses will leave from AJU (after the final lunch) at 2:30 on
Wednesday, June 19th. They will return to AJU by 5:30.

2. What are my tour choices?
You will need to choose which of the three tours you will want to sign up for:
The Getty Museum and Library Archives (4 miles distance), The Skirball Museum
and Noah's Ark (½ mile) or UCLA Library and Archives (6 miles).

3. Am I assured of getting the tour I want?
All tours have a limited amount of people they can take, and it is on a
first-come basis. You will have to indicate first and second choices.

4. What will I see on each tour?

At the Getty: Kathleen Salomon, Chief Librarian of the Getty Research
Institute, will lead us in a behind-the scenes tour of the library, including
special collections from the vault. In addition Elizabeth Morrison, Senior
Curator of Manuscripts, will show us the newly acquired illuminated 13th
century Rothchild Pentateuch.

At the Skirball: We will tour Skirball's Library and Archive and the core
museum collection, then view the Noah's Ark Experience: an award-winning
children's and family destination. (Explore a floor-to-ceiling wooden ark,
filled to the rafters with whimsical animals created from recycled materials.)

At UCLA: We will be led on a tour of UCLA's Special Collections at the Charles
E. Young Research Library. This collection holds a number of Judaica and
Hebraica treasures. Then take time on your own to walk over to the iconic
Powell Library, one of the first two buildings constructed in the Italian
Romanesque style at UCLA's Westwood Campus.

5. Is there an extra charge for these tours?
No, the tours and all admissions are included in your full registration.

6. What if I want to leave from the tour and not go back to AJU?
You can leave from anywhere, but you will need to make sure to bring your
luggage is on the bus with you. The bus will be waiting in a public location
nearby until 5 pm, when you board it to return to AJU. You can get your bag
from the bus at any time. Otherwise, your luggage will be stored at AJU and you
can get it when you return.

7. If I am leaving from LAX on Thursday morning, how do I get the special hotel
rate for the airport hotel?
The LAX Hilton has provided us a special rate for Wednesday night of $142.00,
with airport shuttle provided. You can access the rate on the AJL website.
Limited rooms available.

8. How do I register for the tours?
After April 15th, everyone who has registered for the conference will receive a

We are seeking volunteers for a variety of positions to help us during the AJL
National Conference,
Duties include goody bag stuffers, seating coordinators, registration table
management, shuttle bus organizers, and more. Please read below to find out
more about the volunteer positions and add your name by replying to this email.
You will be contacted later with specifics.

1. Name Tag Checkers at Meals
We need two or three people at each meal to check that guests all have
purchased meal tickets by examining their name badge.

2. Registration Table
Help out at the registration table for an hour or so, checking people in and
giving out bags.

3. Hospitality Room
Help us by keeping the Hospitality Suite organized and looking nice when it is
open. The snacks will be provided.

4. Welcome Bag Stuffing
Help by collating all of the papers, program books and other goodies to go into
the welcome bags. Preferably a week before conference, and probably done at AJU.

5. Transportation Help
Help ensure that the attendees assigned to each bus get their luggage and board
the bus from the hotel to AJU in an orderly fashion on Wednesday, June 19 at
around 11 a.m.

6. Sign Monitors
Place the session signs into the holders before each session throughout the
conference.
7. Author Luncheon Manager
This person will get a list of all the invited authors for the Tuesday author
lunch and make sure each author has an "handler" (from the registered
attendees) who will meet the author, sit next to him/her and be the direct
contact for that day. This person will also be responsible for creating a
simple powerpoint slideshow of the invited authors' photos and book covers to
be shown at the lunch so attendees will know who is in the room. (The list of
authors will be announced in April.)
9. Liaison with Local Bookseller
This person will be given a list of all the authors and speakers coming to the
conference and will work with the local independent bookstore (Book Soup) to
supply the necessary titles.

10. Minyan Coordinator
We need two volunteers, one for the Orthodox minyan and one for the Egalitarian
minyan. These coordinators would find out if there is a need for a Monday
morning minyan since we only start at noon. The coordinators would also make
sure that registrants know where to find the minyans, what time, etc.

[ha-Safran] name of a book please

2019-01-15 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Hi all,
A patron described a book she remembers and I don't know what it is. Any help
is appreciated.

" It is a GRAPHIC NOVEL. A girl (or perhaps a boy, but probably a girl") is
hidden in a barn during the Holocaust -in (most likely) Poland. There is a dog
that barks when Nazis come to search the barn and she believes that she is
saved from death due to this dog. The book's title may be the name of the dog
in Polish. It was published about 10 years ago possibly."

[ha-Safran] need help with a high school class

2018-11-06 Thread Lisa Silverman via Hasafran
Greetings Safranim,

Yikes--A high school senior class in coming in here tomorrow with some specific
requests. We have to field 15 of these types of questions and I would love to
hear from any of you who can lead me to any NOVELS or MEMOIRS that we can offer
to them in regard to these questions:

1. I am looking for 2-4 fiction books that are written by an Israeli who
experienced the 1948 war that I can use to compare with another book from after
the 1967 war because I want to write about the way Israeli war victories impact
Israeli literature

2. I am looking for 2-4 fiction books that are written by an Jewish
orthodox author, that I can compare with another book from a secular Jewish
author because I want to write about modern 21st century literature written by
religious Jews vs. that of secular Jews. I would define religious Jews as those
who identify as observant and look at Judaism as a religion. I would define
secular Jews as those who identify as Jewish but only as a nationality.

3. How did Jews in the different time periods of 19th Century Europe,
World War II and modern day America use literature as a way to deal with
anti-semitism?

4. How did Religious and Secular Jews differ in their views of Israel
from the time it was established and the next 20-30 years? How do Jewish
authors display their views on a Jewish Homeland through their literature? What
did Israel represent to each group, as seen through their literature?
