[hlds_linux] TF2: client connection problem

2009-03-06 Thread Eric Smith
We're investigating the problem where clients are unable to join a team or
maintain a connection to the server. If your server is experiencing this, can
you try running your server with "-NoQueuedPacketThread" in the command line to
see if that fixes it?

Thanks.

[hlds_linux] TF2 required update released

2009-06-08 Thread Eric Smith
We've release a required update for TF2. Sorry for the lack of notice ahead of
time on this one. The details are below.

-Eric

Engine
--
Fixed Day of Defeat: Source server crash when loading dod_jagd.

Team Fortress 2
---
Added a "Discard" button to the item pickup panel.
Added a backstab custom death animation to the Heavy.
Changed default for tf_arena_use_queue to 1. This was the original behavior
prior to the last update.
Changed the Dead Ringer so it can be activated while carrying the flag.
Increased the Force-A-Nature's damage by 10%.
Fixed not being able to reflect arrows with the Flamethrower.
Fixed The Huntsman drawing a muzzle flash under lagged conditions.
Fixed the background color of the Spy disguise panel not always matching his
disguise team.
Fixed idle players being kicked when the server has tf_arena_use_queue set to 0.
Fixed Spies not being able to sap a building if an enemy player was colliding
with the building.
Fixed getting a real target ID on an enemy Spy that's disguised as one of your
teammates if you are disguised as an enemy.
Fixed the Ambassador not shooting enemy sticky bombs.
Fixed Spies being able to automatically cloak after uncloaking at the moment of
a weapon switch.
Fixed Jarate instantly exploding when thrown in some places, like the final
area of Badwater.
Fixed spectators not having their items removed when they enter spectator mode.
Fixed Sniper "civilian" exploit where players could crash the server.
Fixed a couple of cases where viable backstabs would fail.

[hlds_linux] TF2 fix later today

2007-12-21 Thread Eric Smith
1) We're fixing the problem with mp_maxrounds not correctly counting the
number of rounds for Dustbowl after the scoring change. An update for
this is coming later today.

2) Yesterday's TF2 release included the ability for servers to have
map-specific .cfg files in the cfg folder. It was missed in the release
notes.

More information coming later today about the update.

mp_maxrounds checks the number of rounds played. mp_winlimit checks team
scores. The description for mp_winlimit will be updated to reflect that.

mp_maxrounds works fine on my server.

You probably have mp_winlimit, and mp_winlimit need to be fixed.

[hlds_linux] RE: [hlds] Team Fortress 2/Dedicated Server Updated

2008-02-15 Thread Eric Smith
The first three values mirror the behavior in Counter-Strike Source and
other Valve games:

0 = spectate all players, all modes

1 = spectate only your team, and only first-person

2 = no spectating when you die

The new value is 3, and this is the default value for TF2 (unless you
override it in your server.cfg). This behavior is what everyone is used
to for TF2:

3 = spectate only your team, first-person or chase-cam

mp_forcecamera does not restrict players on team Spectator...only
players who are on RED or BLU.

Team Fortress 2 and it's dedicated server have been updated. Please run
hldsupdatetool to receive the update. The specific changes include:

- Fixed server crash with mp_forcecamera set to 1 (reverted to
pre-release behavior)
- Fix stat records sometimes being attributed to the wrong class
- Fixed the SourceTV changes not working unless servers launched with
+tv_enable 1 in the command line
- Game server will now try 32 sequential ports to start up on if they
are all originating on the same machine. Previously it would stop at 10

Brr. It's nonsense. Then there is no meaning for the team that has
lost more rounds to even try to defend - they will lose anyway or
what? I don't like this new system or whatever we could call it.
Please do something about this.

Hmm..now I'm not sure if it's intended or not. Maybe the way it was
before
was a bug and it was fixed?
The team which win is the team which has won the most rounds I
think.

And also- why there could be such a situation (for example - in
dustbowl) - that if a team is defending and timelimit reaches 30
(mp_timelimit 30), then team who is attacking (even not defending)
wins, and then map changes. Please rollback it.

Will mp_timelimit still be relevant in other cp maps
(Granary/Well/Badlands)? Ideally, mp_timelimit expiring, if set, on
said maps and similar custom maps would force an immediate sudden
death/stalemate.

2008-02-29 Thread Eric Smith
We've fixed the problem with > 24 player servers not being listed properly in
the Custom tab by the Master Servers. Sorry about that.

Servers with increased player limits are being listed as Custom servers because
the stated systems specs for TF2 clients are designed around a maximum of 24
players. We cannot guarantee performance, and hence the quality of the
experience, for a player with a low end machine when they play on servers with

Yeah more filters on the Internet tag would be a much better idea. I doubt
many 25+ player server admins will like having their servers outsourced to a
second rate "Custom" tab. Not that we haven't bypassed this already but for
how long? And why not have a nice compromise where everyone wins? Hmm Valve
works in mysterious ways.

RE: [hlds_linux] 32 player server and the Master Servers

The issue we fixed was only related to TF2 servers.

Oh, I just assumed it was all 32 slot servers because there was no prior
post putting it in context with just TF2. Now I'm wondering why my
server
isn't showing up on the list but 7 out of 50 refreshes.

Eric or Alfred can you clarify this and if it's just effecting 32 slot
TF2
servers or all 32 slot servers.
If it's just TF2, Then what would be the cause of my server showing up
so
little ?
Thanks.

[hlds_linux] TF2 update coming later today

2008-03-06 Thread Eric Smith
We're planning to ship a mandatory TF2 server/client update later today.
We'll have the list of changes for you when the update is ready.

There are a few items (below) we're working on that won't be ready for
the release today. We're aware of these issues and are working to have
them fixed for the next update.

- SourceTV issues (port/connection problems, and servers with
maxplayers 32)
- mp_timelimit not functioning correctly on custom maps
- FCVAR_NOTIFY broken on Linux servers

We'll be doing some work to educate players on the new Custom servers
tab, using both PR and user interface changes. Now that the
Internet/Custom servers system is in place, we'd like server admin to
work within it. We'll be delisting servers with custom rule sets that
deliberately work around the system.

It looks like the RCon bad password crash is back following this last
update. I was able to reproduce it by sending a command to the server
via my ingame console and using the wrong password. Once the server
kicked/banned me, it crashed. Hopefully, Valve can include the
regression fix with the _resetgamestats exploit.

[hlds_linux] Left 4 Dead dedicated servers

2008-10-30 Thread Eric Smith
We'll be releasing the Left 4 Dead dedicated server files prior to the Left 4
Dead demo being released. More details will be sent to the mailing lists when
we have them.

There are two things to keep in mind regarding running a Left 4 Dead server:

1) The CPU load for the Left 4 Dead server will be higher than you're used to
for games like TF2. Left 4 Dead has a bunch of A.I. for the zombies, etc., that
games like TF2 don't have.

2) Left 4 Dead uses a new matchmaking system we're developing. We'll be working
with the server admin community to make sure the new system operates as
smoothly as possible. More details on this later.

[hlds_linux] Left 4 Dead -Matchmaking

2008-11-05 Thread Eric Smith
Left 4 Dead will use the new matchmaking system we've been working on.

The new matchmaking system replaces the traditional server browser. By running
a public dedicated server your server will be added to a list of servers
available for clients to use when playing. Games are started from a Game Lobby
by clients, who are then connected to a dedicated server when they start the
game. When they're done, your server is added back to the list of available
servers. Clients will be able to "Quick Match", "Play Online", and "Play With
Friends" when they want to play a game.

You will still have access to the traditional Message of the Day for your
server. For Left 4 Dead, we've added a banner ad you can create that will be
displayed to clients when they're playing on your server. There is also a
ranking system to show the popularity of your server.

This is the first version of what we've been working on, and we're going to
want feedback from all of you once things start turning up tomorrow.

They just pushed it out, but guess what...

YOU FORGOT TO RELEASE AN UPDATED STEAM.INF FILE WITH THE UPDATE AGAIN

Thus forcing a -verify_all and who knows how long before our servers will
be playable because every server on the planet with awake admins or
auto-updaters is trying to update right now

Valve, PLEASE put UPDATE THE STEAM.INF on your release checklist.

It's such a shame that one tiny little file, one I could probably hack
together myself if I knew what the values in it were supposed to be with
this update, is the only reason our servers arent back up already with
players on it.

Hey Eric, has something changed with the autoupdate side of the linux hlds
server?

They would normally get the console message "This server will update on map
change" when an update is out but for the last few weeks it doesn't happen.
Prior to the last few weeks they have been updating like this on their own
with no problems.

The server start command line still has -autoupdate in it. Is there
something else I need to do now in order for this to work again?

Cheers,
BJ

   - The Bazaar Bargain functionality has changed: only one stored head is lost

I set my servers to have +randommap on the command line a while back
rather than starting on a specific map.

However, recently I've been testing a server extension and have noted
with dismay that my test server starts on cp_granary every time... which
isn't exactly random.

Is +randommap as a startup parameter currently broken?
