I verified the folder was usable by copying files into it manually.

Maybe it has to stay in the same filesystem. You could create a tmp/www,
tell the server to move it there, and point nginx there? Haven't tried
this feature myself yet so not 100% sure how it works.

[hlds_linux] L4D update 10/6 broke uppercase usernames again

2010-10-06 Thread Joshua Smith
The update today seems to have broken any servers owned by a linux user with
a uppercase username. User joe launches fine, while user Joe on the same
machine crashes on launch with:

Model models/props_c17/lamppost03a_off.mdl not found and models/error.mdl
couldn't be loadedModel models/props_c17/lamppost03a_off.mdl not found and
models/error.mdl couldn't be loaded

This is happening across many different machines, all running debian lenny,
64bit. This has happened in the past and was corrected with an update once
I brought it up on these mailing lists.

Thank you!

Re: [hlds_linux] 1/3 of l4d2 servers broken after update 7/21

2010-07-21 Thread Joshua Smith
Steven,

By username I mean a linux username for a linux user.

If I try to run the server as a user with the first letter of the
username capitalized the server crashes. However if I then change that
user's username and switch to that user and attempt to launch the server
again it works fine. For example, if I have a user Robin whose l4d2 server
is crashing, and I change his username to robin and switch ownership of
all of Robin files to robin (so we are dealing with exactly the same
files and directory structure in both cases) then robin is able to start a
l4d2 server just fine. This is regardless of if the server is vanilla (fresh
download from steam even), or has mods. I have done this serveral times on
different machines to the same effect.

I know what you mean. There should be server files released in advance
or some dedicated hosts for server owners where to download the games
  and game updates from.

Now whenever clients get their games updated, they hit a wall which is
lack of servers, wait on lobbies and get frustrated. They blame Valve,

Has anyone been able to successfully update a server yet? I've made it to
HLDS installation up to date but depending on the machine i get
 anything
from: #Unable to find gameinfo.txt to: ERROR: Source engine binary
'./srcds_linux' not executable, exiting. All on machines that are
supposedly completely up to date always using -verify_all during update.

Thank you very much for the info. I have been manually setting master
servers, i've run through about 6 so far without any luck. When i remove and
re-add the servers it does fix the problem for about 10 minutes, then the
server is dropped from the master list again. I haven't tried port 27012 yet

Is the solution is to create some kind of script to check for runaway

Re: [hlds_linux] CS:S Crash

2009-11-15 Thread Joshua Smith
This is happening to me as well, across multiple machines with varying intel
chipsets (5000v/5100) running debian lenny. It seems to be VAC/zblock
related, if vac is disabled zblock works fine, no crashes. Same if you try
it the other way around. Combine the two and it will crash all day long.
Unfortunately all of the competitive players need both of these to be
working, considering this started happening out of the blue one day across
multiple machines without modification and no obvious updates to zblock it's
easy to point at vac.

On Sat, Nov 14, 2009 at 3:09 PM, David Parker dpar...@utica.edu wrote:

 Hello,

Let's be logical about this. If this was a general CS:S problem, then
everyone would be seeing it. CS:S works for most people, so we know the
application is not completely broken. If you have all incoming ports (TCP
and UDP) blocked by a firewall, then the problem is most likely not being
caused by anything external. So it could be a problem with your hardware
(maybe bad RAM?), your operating system (maybe an incorrect version of some
library?), or a bug in the game which is specific to your hardware or OS (or
 both).

Some basic things to try (and forgive me if these were mentioned before):

 1. Remove the bots from the game (does an empty server still crash?)
 2. Double-check your startup command line and your config file (are there
missing, incorrect, or unnecessary things in them?)

Also, a few questions (again, these may have been covered already):

What is you startup command line?
What are the *exact* specs of your system (processor model number, etc.)
 What is the OS version?

wait, since when does srcds based servers support 64 players? Did I miss
something here? In any case, try running it with a normal amount of
maxplayers (like 20) and see what happens.

[hlds_linux] l4d2_demo host.txt not showing up in scoreboard

2009-10-28 Thread Joshua Smith
I noticed that my host.txt seems to load fine when you join the server but
no longer do I see one on the scoreboard. Am I missing a setting or did
Valve take this out?

If they did remove it I think it would be great if Valve could add that
back--I started over 100 servers in anticipation of the demo with the hopes
that my host.txt would show on the scoreboard--don't take that away from me
Valve!

Thanks

Re: [hlds_linux] Team Fortress 2 Update Released

2009-08-31 Thread Joshua Smith
Anyone else getting segfaults after this update?

Add -debug to the ./srcds_run command line to generate a debug.log to help
with solving this problem
./srcds_run: line 352: 14076 Segmentation fault$HL_CMD
