Re: [hlds_linux] Bug with dynamic pricing

2006-11-08 Thread Matthew Cheale

Sounds like it's getting applied after the server has booted up. So the
suggestions of autoexec, command line and valve.rc are good solutions to this.

Marcel wrote:

That's correct.
You need to do a mapchange, then the dynamicpricing is really disabled.

I keep having problems with the mp_dynamicpricing 0. Even though I've set it
to my server.cfg every now and then when I restart my server the prices are
from the dynamic pricing list. I check the status of mp_dynamicpricing and
it says 0. Then I type in the console mp_dynamicpricing 0 and change the
level and the prices are normal again. Any idea what's wrong?

I have exactly the same problem on my six linux servers. A map change
seems to fix the problem though.

It sounds like the problem is with your webserver, not srcds.

You have to create an unique directory, cssource uses css, hl2deathmatch
uses hl2mp, the shortnametag of the game.
So if you place your files into http://www.we-happy-few.com/cstrike/; you
have to create the directory css/. From here
(http://www.we-happy-few.com/cstrike/css/;) you have the same pathtree as
in C:\path\to\Steam\steamapps\steamaccount\counter-strike
source\cstrike\.
For placing custommaps, create the subdir maps/. If you made a mistake by
placing files somewhere else, the server/clients cant find and download
them.

Rather than delete everything can I suggest first trying (in this order)

delete InstallRecord.blob (will force a verify_all anyway I think)
delete ~/.steam folder (user's home folder where ./steam is run from)
this contains clientregistry.blob etc.
finally delete server.dll itself (as it's the file it's failing on).

See if this helps the update complete at least.

As to the possible underlying causes. Quite a few good suggestions
have already been posted.

May

even be a permission problem.

fread() tries to read a binary safe stream from pFile and store

It won't be using IE as such, it'll be using mshtml.dll I imagine. IE is
basically a window into this and can set various settings that this dll will

exist as it's a fundamental part of the OS and upsetting it's settings will
result in Steam web content failing.

the other servers, between 27000 and 27100.

Perhaps, but you can add the explanation of why it's not so to a FAQ.
Plenty of how it works documents around the Internet that can be
referenced.
Once you leave the safety of a default port for a service, it doesn't
really matter how far away you get. You still have to enter a value, and a
value far away might be easier to get right than one nearby, because the
customer won't as easily assume that the value you gave him is wrong and
correct it to the default value.
Now if Valve (and other game makers) started supporting SRV records, you
could eliminate ports from the UI and just use names. But's that pie in the
sky, considering how few services have support for SRV.

Dont forget to add to this the fact there still is no option to update ALL mods
e.g.
./steam -update ALL
So we have sit through steam verifying and breaking the core files once per
mod. Please add the ALL option it would really be a great help to us server

The new way the update tool works is totally unusable. Yes its nice to have a
verify option but it should be just that an option it should not be the default.
I would suggest something like:
-verify, -verify_prompt and -verify_fix
where:
-verify would just print the diffs
-verify_prompt would prompt the user for [y/n] to fix
-verify_fix would just fix all
In all cases it would not print Verifying: X as this means you
cant see the wood for the trees
-update should only apply updates and potentially warn about diffs
but this should really be left for -update -verify IMO.
Applying this update just totally trashed our setup overwriting:
Verifying: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\cstrike\liblist.gam
Downloading: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\cstrike\liblist.gam
Verifying: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\cstrike\mapcycle.txt
Downloading: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\cstrike\mapcycle.txt
Verifying: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\cstrike\motd.txt
Downloading: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\cstrike\motd.txt
Verifying: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\cstrike\server.cfg
Downloading: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\cstrike\server.cfg
Verifying: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\hlds_run
Downloading: /usr/local/games/hlds_ls/\hlds_run
Please please guys there really needs to be a proper test procedure
put in place here. No way should this have got through testing. This
lets try it out on X thousand people is just not cricket.

Re: [hlds_linux] 5 reasons i'm shutting down my HL Servers

2003-11-12 Thread Matthew Cheale
That's what I've been thinking, since the P4 has it's FPU rather
castrated anything not optimised with SSE2 optimisations, i.e. the
hlds_l, will give you a massive hit on the processor.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi Drew,

I have had the same problems running more than 2 or 3 hlds serveres on Intel
CPU?s.
I have testet following HArdware/Software.

Intel Server board.
Intel Pentium 4. 2.8(exeon)
Intel Server NIC 10/100
Kingston 1GB DDR 2700 mem.
Raid ide133 7200 rpms
With the old cs 1.3 or erlier there was no problem running 6 x 12 slots
with adminmod, metamod, statsme and other plugins like spawn protection, restrictions.
Today with steam cs 1.6 i can only run 4 serveres and its with out pingboost
1,2,3 and its with out 1000mhz linux kernl. All i get out off steam cs 1.6
on the linux server side with the intel binarys are 4 x 12 slots without
pingboost 1,2,3 is a hlds steam server with constant 50 fps server side
and a higher ping than the old cs 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 versions.. but the ping
are stabel and the server are bug free if your ask some high aimers. But
the CPU usages are way to high, i cant even fit a extra test server in there
are not in use.
This set up is using debian, i have testet, suse,redhat,win2k and found
out that Debian are running best, its use less cpu usages and drivers than
suse and rh.
I have another server 100% same hardware speecs.

This is where its beginng to get fun:
Intel Server board.
Intel Pentium 4. 2.8(exeon)
Intel Server NIC 10/100
Kingston 1GB DDR 2700 mem.
Raid ide133 7200 rpms
Debian and Redhat 9.0 testet on this system with 1000mhz kernl update.

Now i can only run 2 serveres and i use like 60-70% cpu usages. but i get
700-1000 fps server side and the ping are 20-30(10-20 without pingboost
1) lower than the non 1000mhz kernl. and when i test with a extra servere
on the system all servers goes crazy, all pings are spiking but and no its
not the server setup. i can follow the respons time on the nic and there
are no problem.
As i can see the intel binaries from valve need a p4/p4(exeon)/p4 dual optimise
ASAP.
This is the most wierd part, i can run the same amount of servers on a amd
2.4 1gb desktop board form a noname manufacture and a ide 66 hdd 7200 rpms.
The Amd computer is a old desktop with a amd 2.4ghz 1gb ram, desktop motherboard,
ide66 7200 rpms, Debian and redhat. and i get less cpu usages then on the
1000mhz linux kernl intel server installed system even that the amd system
also use 1000mhz kernl.
I cant say i higher, VALVE NEEDS TO OPTIMISE THE Intel Binaries both for
Dual/Quad installations and the Pentium 4 cpu class and the Pentium Exeon
Class.
Best Regards
Chris
