Python works, or C.

You might want to look up socket programming.

On my first mail I already wrote that quakestat can not devide between
sourcetv and gameservers anymore and because of that I am looking for a
method without quakestat.

That is why I asked for a programm that allows me to send querys I wrote
to the ip:port I like.
And please do not send the developer page again. My question is and was
not what a query should contain. Instead the question was which program
allows me to send such an query string. To make it more clear. I do not
want a ready programm. Instead i would like to know which programm
allows me to query any kind of ports with custom written query strings.

this (seg faults). I'm assuming you can just update to TF2 files, or the like

Mystery lag spikes without actual CPU spikes and only a moderate amount of
HD activity?
Sounds about standard.

While our group hasn't completely ruled out HD stalls, I've been thinking it
is either some a slow synchronous network activity or some sort of memory
management churning the time.

[hlds_linux] hl2mp not picking up hostname?

2010-03-25 Thread Miano, Steven M.
I'm trying to start up to different servers on the same box with a server3.cfg
and a server4.cfg, but it seems like the configs are not being executed from my
command line.

I am starting my hl2mp server with this command line:

/srcds_l/srcds_run -game hl2mp -port 27015 +ip 24.129.170.4 +map dm_overwatch
+maxplayers 16 +exec server3.cfg

I don't have a server.cfg, but am trying to use a server3.cfg, and a
server4.cfg with:

hostname "BHN of Tampa HL2DM Server #1"
and
hostname "BHN of Tampa HL2DM Server#2"

Respectively.

Any help would be appreciated...I have two counter strike servers running, and
they pick up on server1.cfg and server2.cfg perfectly, it's odd.

Also when I screen into the console, I can: "exec server3.cfg" || "exec
server4.cfg" and it works

Thanks for any input,

Steve

I have always had it in the server.cfg and it's still there.

The actual command to be bookmarked should be something more along the lines of:

mv /home//.steam/ClientRegistry.blob /home//.steam/ClientRegistry.blob.bak

Just because I don't think most people will be running their srcds servers as
root, or be nearly as vigilant as you are. ; )

No offense/insult meant.

Considering it's a box 20 feet from my desk, running just srcds, and nothing
else, If it was a hosted server on a far away server, I wouldn't run it as
root.

But your answer is, yes, my copy of srcds is run under root, as its just 1
box running just srcds, and has no access to any real networks, and I
monitor network usuage daily, along with packet counts.

Subject: [hlds_linux] No such file or directory on amd64 - debian

few days ago everything (srcds_amd, srcds_run etc.) was working fine.
i think that i have started having this problem after small kernel upgrade
2.6.26-1 -> 2.6.26-2
(but i'm not quite sure - dont remeber when i did the upgrade).
now srcds_run returns:
./srcds_run
Auto detecting CPU
Using AMD Optimised binary.
Server will auto-restart if there is a crash.
./srcds_run: line 362: ./srcds_amd: No such file or directory

of course i have this file:
ls -l srcds* :
-rwxr-xr-x 1 gry lan 183860 2009-02-26 22:31 srcds_amd
-rwxr-xr-- 1 gry lan 183828 2009-02-26 22:31 srcds_i486
-rwxr-xr-- 1 gry lan 183828 2009-02-26 22:31 srcds_i686
-rwxr-xr-x 1 gry lan 10174 2009-02-26 22:31 srcds_run

so i tried to install everything again (in test directory) and so:

with normal user (it used to work fine):

g...@milowice2:~/test$ wget
http://storefront.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin
g...@milowice2:~/test$ chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin
g...@milowice2:~/test$ ls -l
-rwxr-xr-x 1 gry lan 3513408 2005-09-02 04:27 hldsupdatetool.bin

g...@milowice2:~/test$ ./hldsupdatetool.bin
-bash: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: No such file or directory

g...@milowice2:~/test$ linux32 ./hldsupdatetool.bin
linux32: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: No such file or directory

and as a root (the same):
milowice2:/home/lan/gry/test# ./hldsupdatetool.bin
bash: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: No such file or directory
milowice2:/home/lan/gry/test# linux32 ./hldsupdatetool.bin
linux32: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: No such file or directory

some informations about my system:

milowice2:/home/lan/gry/test# uname -a
Linux milowice2 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Thu May 28 21:28:49 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux

milowice2:/home/lan/gry/test# apt-get install lib32gcc1 ia32-libs
(of course after update)
lib32gcc1 is already the newest version.
ia32-libs is already the newest version.

the same situation is with files: srcds_amd, srcds_i386, srcds_i686.
so i just cant run any hl like/steam powered game server.

thanks in advance for any help.

[hlds_linux] Achievement Servers

Has anyone seen or know of a good article/howto/tutorial/etc on creating an

Even a map + server.cfg would be a great start...

You're running a debian etch server as root, or you're running a "root" server?

I'm a little lost on that, beefing up to a dual core, or quad core multi CPU
server would be a great way to get to acceptable game play/performance from
your servers.

Good luck!

Subject: [hlds_linux] LAN Server Browser & +ip

I have been experimenting and found out that binding the ip address via the
command line argument +ip stops hlds from responding to broadcast packets
looking for dedicated servers even though sv_lan 1 is set. Can anyone else
confirm this? If so, this makes running multiple different game servers on
the standard port more difficult than desired. I'm looking at running
multiple Left 4 Dead, HL2MP, Counter-Strike etc (depending on demand) off of
a dedicated server and was binding specific ip addresses for each one so
they could all listen on unique ip addresses. If I remove the +ip argument,
the server responds as expected to broadcast packets.

I did my testing with L4D.

Thanks in advance!

Is it possible to use -ip on the command line, or even assign the IP in the

A required update for Team Fortress 2, along with an optional update for Day of
Defeat: Source has been released. Please run hldsupdatetool to receive the
update. The specific changes include:

- Pipebombs now get a reduced close range damage ramp up (like Rocket Launcher
& Syringe Gun)
- Ultimately reduces damage done by pipebombs to enemies <512 units
from the Demoman
- Moved the unlockable system over to the new item backend:
- Added a warning dialog to the loadout screen telling clients when the
server they're on could not get their loadout
- Made "tf_damage_disablespread" a replicated convar, so clients can see the
value of it on the server they're connected to
- Renamed "mp_stalemate_at_timelimit" to "mp_match_end_at_timelimit", to better
explain its function now that stalemate is optional
- Protected several more commands from client exploitation
- Fixed muzzle flashes & shell ejections still playing when viewmodels are
hidden
- Server tags can now be used to include or exclude servers from the list

Huge disappointment for me.

One of the few mailing lists that I thought was actively worthwhile so far as
reading and learning from.

The forums are terrible, and not exactly the preferred method for most admins
(losing the ability to have rules for the "required updates", or updates to the
servers in general).

It'll be missed.

Another great way to start up your game server screens is to use these options:

"[EMAIL PROTECTED] screen -AmdS [Screen Name] ./srcds_run -console -game name
etc"

This will actually start the screen and automatically send it to the background
as a daemon basically. : )

Why aren't you doing daily restarts anyway?

You don't need to restart the server itself, just restart source and it will
work much better for you. ; )

Does anyone know what would cause the slow responsiveness degradation in
the source hlds? I ran the windows version of srcds for a long while
with no slowing over time. However, it seems that the linux version can
only last about a week before players' movement becomes very jittery and
the server needs a restart. Any ideas?

As I understand it, VMWare ESX is quite different to traditional versions
of VMWare (since it's a hypervisor based model). However, I don't have
much experience with it I'm afraid. My work provides Xen virtual servers,
and we did have a customer running a CS:Source server on it, not sure how
it performed though. If anyone has any experience running game servers on
Xen I'd be interested to hear how it went.

we tried running game servers in vmware and it was terrible.

you should use a kernel level virtualizer (maybe like virtuozzo), not a
whole machine virtualizer.

I just finished up a LAN running 6 game servers on one dual quad core xenon
machine with 16gb of RAM. Using Hyper-V and having at least 20 users on (over
the 6 game servers), and peaking at just over 30 users in one of the game
servers the CPU usage was less then 25% (for the host machine).

It's a little fickle to get Hyper-V working 100% in test environments, but once
we launched the server for a LAN party it help up perfectly, and playing Team
Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Source there were no performance losses that the
users could see.

The server should be attending another LAN in about 2 weeks, and I'll try to
get better numbers for you guys. Hyper-V or ESXi seem like the viable
solutions, and so far I would say Hyper-V on 2k8 works like a champ with the
right hardware behind it.

Hi,

We've encountered a problem with our TF2 server (
 89.106.241.45:27115) not getting
listed on the master server list.

No firewall and a pretty standard TF2 install with SourceMod. Servers hosted
on 24/7 dedicated machine on 100MB uplink.

Our CS1.6 and CSS running on the same machine are listed without problems.

So far we have used some beta command parameter using beta master listing
code, added a "heartbeat" config parameter and changed sv_lan "0" to sv_lan
0 (without the ")

Any ideas?

tnx

I have a difficult set-up in regards to getting my kernel recompiled/custom
compiled - however will be able to upgrade the distribution from 6.06 up to
8.04 with the latest "tickless" kernel coming out next month. Thanks for all of
the input guys - hopefully when the new kernel hits this will smooth itself out
and I'll be able to see FPS of greater then 50fps and get some people on my
server without that choppiness.

I am normally against top posting, but do tend to be lazy outside of the other
technical mailing lists I post to. ; )

Thanks guys,

~Steve

Re: [hlds_linux] Choppiness over 12 or 14 players connected.

2008-03-17 Thread Miano, Steven M.
If it's a kernel issue, I've heard that the next LTS of Ubuntu will come with a
new kernel that is already set to 1000 hz, does anyone know if there is any
validity in that?

Here are the current server settings:

Fps_max is set to 300
Sv_maxupdaterate "101" ( def. "60" )
Sv_minupdaterate "70" ( def. "10" )
Sv_maxcmdrate "101" ( def. "40" )
Sv_mincmdrate "70" ( def. "0" )
Sv_maxrate "25" ( def. "0" )
Sv_minrate "10" (def. "3500" )

The FPS seem to dip down to about 35.0 with a load, but otherwise seem stable
at 49. The load has never hit 2.0 on the server at all. In landscape my 3 day
graph maxes out at 1.75 during peak usage.

I'm letting it run on the default tic rate.

[hlds_linux] Choppiness over 12 or 14 players connected.

2008-03-17 Thread Miano, Steven M.
Hey guys, I have a problem that's been plaguing my server for a while now, and
just can't seem to figure out how to work it out. I'd really appreciate some
help with this if possible.

The set-up:

Game: Team Fortress 2 Server (24 slots)
Operating System: Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS (Dapper).
IP: 24.129.170.3:27175
The Server: Dell Power Edge 2650
CPUs: 2xIntel(r) Xeon(tm) CPU 2.40GHz
Kernel: 2.6.15-28-server, with no customization.
Memory: 4.71GB RAM.
Start-up Line: screen -A -m -d -S tf2 ./srcds_run -console -game tf +ip
24.129.170.3 -port 27175 +map cp_dustbowl +exec server.cfg

Stats output:
Cpu: 0.00 In 0.00 Out 0.00 Uptime 7109 Users 29 FPS 49.70 Players 0

I'll try to get the above under a load as well if I can.

When there are 20 people on the server the cores are at about 25% total, and
none of them are over 60% individually. From everything that I've read I would
imagine that this set up and configuration would be above and beyond what would
be needed in order to run a good stable server, and yet it's not doing it. As
soon as there are more then 10-14 players connected and playing the game play
begins to get choppy and almost as if there is a huge amount of lag hitting
everyone. The server is connected to a 100mb/s network that is a switch away
from an OC-3 connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated guys. : (

Thanks again,

~Steve

Most mailing lists (especially the more technical ones request that you not
"top post", as it presents itself as such:

A: it's harder to read

>Q: why do people dislike top posting?

Normally if people kept to smaller quotes it would be great, but if someone is
working on a complex issue that 12 people have attempted to aide and assist
with then keeping the entire text is beneficial with only the most recent input
at the top to deal with. ; )

Just some insight,

Thank you guys for all of the excellent suggestions, I'm still looking for a
good howto/walk through on recompiling a kernel (I have yet to see one that
will work well with a PE1950 running Ubuntu 6.06.1 yet).

The stats command always returns about 50 fps, hopefully getting that up to
even 250 fps would be a huge help!

I'm also cutting three of the servers off, and will try to dedicate the
remaining four servers to their own cores while I test the kernel recompiling.

Thanks again folks.

There are two dual core CPU's on the machine with 7 game servers running, but
no players.

Cpu(s): 7.7% us, 0.7% sy, 0.0% ni, 91.5% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si

Load averages: 1.69, 1.30, 1.53

I'll be watching it again tonight to see exactly how much cpu is getting
gobbled up when clients are connected.

Thanks again in advance! = )

Hello!

I'm having an issue with my TF2 server, it runs great, nice low pings - but it
seems like once more then 4 people are logged into it the server itself gets
choppy.

It's almost like you start seeing things going by frame by frame by frame. This
is really annoying and I just don't understand why it would be happening.

It's housed up in a Power Edge 2650 with 2x2.4ghz Xeon, and 5 GB of RAM.

There are 2 Counter Strike: Source Servers on the server, as well as two Half
Life 2 Death match, one CS 1.6, and one Day of defeat game server.

None of the other servers really get any traffic, but I can't imagine that 7
game servers on this box would gimp it too badly? The server has 4 NIC cards, 4
different IPs, and the players all say that the pings/latency are not a
problem, its just the playing of the game.

Thanks for the links; I'm now subscribed to the mailing list.

I'm going to have to wait until later when I have the retail version in my
hands in order to test it out - but if anyone else does I'd be interested in
knowing if it installs/runs well - or if you have any issues.

I guess now that I know about the other mailing list I can get my CoD4 info
from there. : )

If this was in reply to my issue, the problem was that I did an update for dod,
instead of dods in the /srcds_l directory.

Doing that is bad, and I have learned my lesson.

I don't understand completely how this process is set up. Do you have an
automatic restart set up through a script to have the server restart on a
daily, or other increment?

I know my servers are set up in cron to restart each day at 5 am and the
easiest way to pull the PID is to do:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ps -ef | grep screen | grep "whatever you title your screen
session as" | grep -v grep | awk '(print $2 )' > counterstrike.pid

ps -ef pulls all running processes, the pipe means we are going to do something
with that command, the next thing we do is grep for screen sessions, then we
grep for the screen session that you saved the game as, then grep -v removes
the grep that we are doing at the moment, and finally the awk command will take
the second piece of output (which is the PID), and prints it out - this will
give you the PID for the screen session.

If you want you can roll that all up in a script, chmod it so that it can be
run executably, and then through it in your crontab to run hourly, daily, etc.

Keep us updated on how it goes. ; )

Okay, so just adjusting the mp_timelimit to 0 should make it so that the map
will never change, but the rounds will still just go to 3 and then start over?
Is that right?

[hlds_linux] 24/7 servers and map reloads...

2007-11-06 Thread Miano, Steven M.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
I am attempting to set up a 24/7 dustbowl server for Team Fortress 2, and it
seems to be running well, however each time a round ends, it reloads the map.

I've seen on other servers that they don't need to reload the map, and simply
reset the score - does anyone know what I may be doing wrong?

Yes, rcon = remote console.

Really HLSW takes all of the thought out of administering the server - you can
create your own list of servers, and also right click to your hearts content. ;

I just downloaded that and have been playing around with it. It seems pretty
nice, but is there a way to send commands from HLSW to the console?

Wait a sec...is that what "rcon" means? Remote Console?
Man, I feel so daft.

I prefer to run my servers pure and without any mods if possible.

For administering the servers themselves (I'm up over 10 dedicated now), I use
HLSW and ask that my admins do that same. ; )

Subject: [hlds_linux] Best admin mod for a new server admin.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
I just started my dedicated server up with the release of the TF2 dedicated
server. I see that there are a handful of admin mods for managing a server
available. Anyone have any recommendations as to which is the best? Most
powerful?
Thanks in advance.

The answer was to just do a ./steam -command update -game tf -verify_all

Seems to have one of my 2 servers up and running now. : )

[hlds_linux] Unable to get team fortress beta running....

2007-09-21 Thread Miano, Steven M.
Working with a 6.06.1 LTS Ubuntu Kernel is 2.6.15-28

I have created and changed owner over the /srcds_l directory on my box.

>From there I have updated to 100% the ./steam -command update -game tf

Running that several times I have reached 100%.

Then when attempting to run ./srcds_run -console -game tf +map ctf_2fort I get
either Unable to load module bin/datacache_i486.so (when running from
/srcds_l/tf2/orangebox)

Or: I get Invalid game type 'tf' specified when trying to run the same command
from /srcds_l

Any advice/help is appreciated. : )

RE: [hlds_linux] finding server through browsing

2007-09-06 Thread Miano, Steven M.
Whether or not its public or private, what the host name is, the IP - all
things that I could also take a look at and see if I can replicate your issue -
or check against my currently working server.cfg's to see if there is anything
that can be tweaked? Its your choice - post up on the forums and use the search
feature as well though - because this subject does often come up.

Maybe a stupid question, but what does the server.cfg have to do with it?
There are no settings related to that, to my knowledge.

Posting your server.cfg may help a little more in trying to see if there are
any issues. Be sure to *** out any private information like passwords
though. ; )

Hey,

A little question. For some reason our CS and CS:S servers are hard to find
through the steambans serverbrowser. One server popped up after 4 times
refreshing, but the other server weren't found (we have 11 CS servers and 7
CS:S, and only one CS:S server showed up). What could be wrong? We have only
one nic inside each server and no ranges are banned by the firewall..

Any suggestions?

Are spaces/weird characters in names allowed in the botprofile.db (in the
srcds/cstrike folder)?

Spaces did not work for me, however periods did work. I don't know what you
mean by "weird" characters...

[hlds_linux] Undetected Hacks

2007-07-26 Thread Miano, Steven M.
Last night I had a couple of users log on, and let us know they are using the
ecstatic cheat/hack on the serverthey continued to climb in the rankings
with nearly 4 kills per death (which is no sure sign they are cheating I know),
and also I received 2 demos's from moderators/game admins showing single shot
head shots through walls.

Is there someone that this could be forwarded to Mike or Alfred?

This type of play makes people leave the servers and either try to find a
better group of people - or a new game all together...

Thanks,

Steve

I can reproduce the problem here (the "netconnectionbuffer.cpp (241) :
Assertion Failed: cubReadRemaining == 0" message and then being disconnected
from Steam3), we are looking into it.

Why sponsor them? Don't you think they make enough money abusing
