Having the same problem here...

lately we are also getting update updates looping -_-'

Has anyone else for the last week or more been having issues with the steam

Normally a full tf2 verify all take about 20 - 30mins to run through fully
but currently we are having issues were servers are hanging on start-up due
to the update command we run (with non verify btw) just sitting there not
doing anything and currently annoying customers but we don't really want to
have to remove the update line as it ensures there server is up to date.

I normally open a new terminal session On the unix-server and open up iptraf.
When you run the tool, iptraf will show the address of the server, just note
that you will have to guess your way through. All i can say is that the port on
the peer address is mostly the same as the usual hlds-ports (27023, 27031, etc.)

Subject: [hlds_linux] Server update: details
Here are the details for the server update the other night (below).
-Eric
==
1) Logging
Logging has been updated as follows:
The "log " command now turns on/off *all* logging. Once
logging
is on, there are three destinations where the information can be
sent: a
file, the server console, and UDP addresses.
You can use "sv_logfile" and "sv_logecho" to toggle logging to a file
and the console (they both default to 1). If logging is enabled and
there are any addresses in the "logaddress_list", the logging
information will be sent to those addresses.
Typing "log" by itself will give you the current logging status and
where items are being logged to.
Here is a list of the changes:
* Added "sv_logsdir" that determines the folder in the game directory
where server logs will be stored.
* Added "sv_log_onefile" that will log server information to only one
file instead of a new file for every map change.
* Updated the "log" command to support "on/off" as well as "1/0".
* Updated the output for the "log" command to include the current
status (logging or not) and if logging is enabled it outputs where the
information is being sent (file, console, UDP).
* Renamed "mp_logfile" to "sv_logfile" to be more consistent with the
other logging cvars.
* Renamed "mp_logecho" to "sv_logecho" to be more consistent with the
other logging cvars.
* Renamed command "log_addaddress" to "logaddress_add" to be
consistent
with previous versions of this cvar.
* Added "logaddress_del" to delete an entry in the logaddress list.
* Added "logaddress_delall" to delete all entries in the logaddress
list.
* Added "logaddress_list" to list the current entries in the
logaddress
list.
* Added default port "27015" if port is not included in IP given to
"logaddress_add" and "logaddress_del".
* Removed unused "log_level" command.
* Removed unused "log_udp" command (if the logaddress has entries and
logging is enabled, the information is automatically sent to those
addresses).
2) Kick
* Split the "kick" command into two commands: "kick" and "kickid".
"kick" supports kicking by player name. "kickid" supports kicking by
userid or uniqueid.
3) Ban lists
* Added the ability to load large ban lists.
* Increased max IP bans (addip) to 32768.
* Increased max ID bans (banid) to 32768.

An update to the server browser was released yesterday that enabled both
Source and HL1 games to be displayed in the same list. This update makes
use of the server updated released 2 months ago. Make sure you have

Get used to it man, it's happening every update for a long time. I dunno
but Valve should deploy much more content servers in Europe, specially
on AMS IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange), since it's the biggest peering
point in Europe and most ISP's have are linked there, Colt, ALTER NET
and Lambdanet would also be good options for deploying content servers,
specially Lambdanet.

Valve has more errors for us:

Checking/Installing 'Linux Server Engine' Version 10

How come that according to
http://www.steampowered.com/status/status.html there is over 1,000 Mbps
bandwidth thats available? Is it because Steam can't handle small
updates(tm)?

The CPU hit will be near zero as data is rarely compressed (only
reliable packets above a threshold are compressed). If you want to try
and quantitatively measure the difference, monitor CPU usage during
client signon as that is when the majority of packet compression will
occur.

Checking bootstrapper version ...
Updating Installation
Updating 'Linux Server Engine' from version 1 to version 2
Downloading: .\core_i386.so

Connection Reset
Every time an update comes out. They say the network will support it,
but it never does. Perhaps you have to live in America. Although with
a direct connection to WorldCom and Level 3 I would have thought it
would be okish.

Alternatively, you could allow us to display our own banner to advertise
our own companies and websites.

i m sure its doesn't matter while banner ad shown for downloading steam
content from its own content server. but it shouldn't show up (or at
least let us have some control on) while people downloading maps or
resources from the servers we paid for something. we are also woking on
bf1942 recently even though we host CS since beta5.

Great update

I see the following improvements:

- When a user is downloading maps and other CONTENT from my server,
they are now mislead to believe another company is providing that
CONTENT. Meanwhile, I pay for the bandwidth and somebody else is making
money off of the marketing. I'm sure glad you fixed that banner slot.
- Flaginfo still DOES NOT WORK in TFC. It's not like flaginfo is very
important - it's only the main objective of the game.
I'm too tired to test the other TFC bugs since I assume none of them
were fixed.
In other news, after being an exclusive HL server shop for four years,
we know have UT2K3 and ET servers in test. They should provide a nice
change.

Re: [hlds_linux] Server update

2003-11-13 Thread Christopher Luk
the banner slot is a problem. VALVE develope the software, every one
knew for sure. but its not the current banner ad provider host the
server, or even paid for the server. one of my investors ask me an funny
question immediately after seeing that banner. "is your company being
sold to somebody else?", they also blame us for banner ad being sold to
others without acknowledgement, of course they don't know the details,
also none of them know about this list. we may need to withdrawn from
the HL business because of this issues, not even from the technical
point of view. investors doesn't knew many things, thats for sure, just
found it doesn't make sense why the server they paid for becoming the
marketing platform of others (may be potential competitors) and we have
no control of.
VALVE people please help us reflect the situations. if HL2 continous
show this problem, we may have to keep out of it.

This is for all large data reliable data transfers, so yes, maps will be

Quick question: What are the CPU impact using these additional
compression? You know, some of us still having casualities with cpu
usage, and now we are provided with another cpu "eater" function...
What are the estimated compression ratio and cpu usage increase we
should get?
