Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] TF2 Server lag

2009-07-19 Thread bob dolet
I have also noticed, across all of my machines that the occasional TF2
player will warp (not everyone at once), although i am not getting the
world freeze that was mentioned (had that a few months ago with some
other patch). This seems to be since the last update or two.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] TF2 Server lag

2009-07-18 Thread Andrew Armstrong
I happened to be playing on a BestGN L4D server yesterday, and I did notice
a few what appeared to be warping issues (although that may just be because
you mentioned these problems earlier!).

So it could be that this is affecting all games, not just TF2.

Very strange.

Try running a simple network ping in a loop once per second (and log this
somewhere), so you can see if there are any network problems during these
spike periods (perhaps the other games handle it more gracefully?).

Also try graphing cpu/memory usage of the game server (and the host itself),
maybe its spiking in CPU for some reason which would explain the spikes (if
its busy processing some data/attack).

Another thing to try is while playing (be sure it's a stock server -
stock/plain servers should have zero problems!) turn on net_graph 3 and
watch the output when you hit the problem.

It could possibly be something within the data centre (maybe some device is

explain the sudden warp)?

The net graph should hopefully show this (sudden drop of activity and then
spike).

TF2 Servers are holding perfect 990fps and 0.2ms VAR, cpu usage basically
nothing. 100mbit link using only ~10%. Last night I played with
net_maxcleartime, net_splitrate and net_splitpacket_maxrate managed to tweak
it so we get 0 choke yet no difference -.-

I also tried stock fps 300, made no difference. I also expermimented with
ping boosts.

I can run left 4 dead on the box without any issues. The issue seems to be
TF2 only :/

On my other machine, no issues what so ever the machine is literally sitting
one row above in the datacenter. The machines are running cloned setups. Had
memory replaced, tried different cpus / cores etc.

I can confirm the server lag, it occurs since the last update when alot of
players are in the same area. Valve, please fix it.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] TF2 Server lag

2009-07-16 Thread Andrew Armstrong
Very strange.

Try running a simple network ping in a loop once per second (and log this
somewhere), so you can see if there are any network problems during these
spike periods (perhaps the other games handle it more gracefully?).

Also try graphing cpu/memory usage of the game server (and the host itself),
maybe its spiking in CPU for some reason which would explain the spikes (if
its busy processing some data/attack).

Here was a extreme case with 24 players, it randomly happens. Soometimes
might be fine for a hour then it spikes.

Looks like a timeout,

I sat down on a empty server with a stop watch, had mini spikes following
durations apart

(empty)
- 15sec
- 22sec
- 10sec
- 14sec
- 25sec
- 50sec
(server fills - larger spikes)
- 28minutes
- 10minutes
- 63minutes
- 16minutes

The ones seconds apart where little tiny jumps, the minutes apart jumps
where bigger. The biggest one ive seen is in the screenshot.

Which part does it spike? The very first part (0 on x-axis) or further along
in the middle?

What you should do is sit idle in the server and note down when the spikes
occur for 5-10 minutes and report back, lets see if there is a pattern.

Thats what happens when it spikes, no real time pattern between the spikes
seems quite random. Tried both on plain / custom, clean, old installs and
copies from the other game server seems to make no real difference.

No NTP either so its not clock drift :/

Another thing to try is while playing (be sure it's a stock server -
stock/plain servers should have zero problems!) turn on net_graph 3 and
watch the output when you hit the problem.

It could possibly be something within the data centre (maybe some device is
temporarily holding game packets hostage for a second or two, which would
explain the sudden warp)?

The net graph should hopefully show this (sudden drop of activity and then
spike).

Tried it all, with and without sourcemod /metamod. Had a few linux devs look
over the kernel etc.

TF2 Servers are holding perfect 990fps and 0.2ms VAR, cpu usage basically
nothing. 100mbit link using only ~10%. Last night I played with
net_maxcleartime, net_splitrate and net_splitpacket_maxrate managed to tweak
it so we get 0 choke yet no difference -.-

I also tried stock fps 300, made no difference. I also expermimented with
ping boosts.

I can run left 4 dead on the box without any issues. The issue seems to be
TF2 only :/

On my other machine, no issues what so ever the machine is literally sitting
one row above in the datacenter. The machines are running cloned setups. Had
memory replaced, tried different cpus / cores etc.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] TF2 Server lag

2009-07-16 Thread Andrew Armstrong

The net graph should hopefully show this (sudden drop of activity and then
spike).

2009-07-16 Thread Andrew Armstrong
Hi,

I would try a complete reinstall (rm the entire folder, download
hldsupdatetool again, etc). Once updated, run a server and see if the
problem persists.

If its persisting still; try and collect more information about how often
and when the problem occurs - try timing it (is it happening at some
specific interval?). This may help identify the problem.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] TF2 Server lag

2009-07-16 Thread Shane Arnold
I vaguely remember having this issue on an old CSS box.

It ended up being caused by a dodgy SM plugin or something to do with
it's configs. I'm sorry I can't be more detailed but I've not
experienced this for many years. Obviously being from BestGN I won't say
you don't know what you are doing, but have you tried a barebones
install, then just ran the server using ./srcds_run -console -game
cstrike +map de_dust2 and see if that still fails?

2009-07-16 Thread Ryan Mannion
I have also noticed unusually high CPU usage on my servers. It appears
in-game as severe stuttering when many players are in the same general
area. Note that client rates are set properly.

Re: [hlds_linux] [hlds] TF2 Server lag

2009-07-16 Thread moe
Yes I get the same, Debian etch and a half, dual quad box with pretty much
nothing on it.

Any ideas? I tried pretty much everything I could think off

- New kernel
- Higher / Lower FPS
- New Installs
- Seperate users for each install
- Insane max rates
- Nice / Renice
- Affinity

Removed pretty much every unused process including ntp.

Any fresh suggestions would be great

Are you folks having server lag issues? Remember a few months back
there was an update, I think it was one of the ones right before the
sniper update. Any hoo... The update back then caused a "Time Warp"
type lag where you where running, then you would freeze and then it
will quit and you would be 298475 feet away from where you where when
the freeze or lag ended. I am getting that again...

I get it under the following conditions, both boxes at The Planet:

Windows 2003 Server / Linux Slak
Meta/Sourcemod Stable latest release / No Admin mods whatsoever
With plugins / Without plugins

Maybe a Steam network issue?

And there is still a server crash out there for the kiddies. Had this
guy (http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198010232177) get on
last night 3am'ish and say server was going down in one minute and
sure enough it did.

And yes, I tried the following noted below and it didn't help with
the Time Warp Lag:

It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane,
Let's do the Time Warp again!

Hutch
