Re: [hlds_linux] CD

2004-03-10 Thread Marcelo de Paula Bezerra
You only need one cheat to work and cheaters will use it.
CD does not ban, so they kill one cheat, bust a cheater and he just
picks another tool.
I doesn't has a distributed ban list, so it prevents someone from using
an old cheat, but does not stop him from upgrading a newer/better
working one.
If CD was more common tha VAC, surely there would be a lotta more cheats
working with it and VAC would be perceived as the end all solution to
cheating and it would be an endless loop.

Punkbuster was a 3rd party tool as cd is.
They dumped hl support when they wanted valve to pay them some bucks for
their services and moved on to other plataforms.

RE: [hlds_linux] CD

2004-03-09 Thread Roach
So CD isn't any good cause it's third party, but turning it over to PB would
be different how?

As for using a third party solution causing a division between everyone... I
think that's a cop out as well. I find it very, very hard to believe that
anyone plays CS/HL without the aid of any other program. Be it the GameSpy
type application, an IM client to meet up with friends, (since Friends is
often down) IRC, etc.

That's like saying don't bother running a firewall cause windows is fine the
way it is. Or don't use a anti-spam program cause junk mail can just be
deleted.

I'm sorry... I'm all for VAC, I really am. When it first started I had high
hopes for it... but unfortunately VAC hasn't become what it should have, and
I don't really see that changing. That being the case, there is no option
but to look for a third party solution. Be it CD, some type of PB program,
etc. CD is updated much more then VAC.. so my money is on that for the time
being.

This wasn't totally directed at David Lee - just my thoughts on the past few
messages about VAC and CD.

Cheating Death is not a solution. It is a temporary fix. A patch on top
of a patch where neither work the way they should. All current anti
cheat schemes for HL dont work. Valve's best bet would be to just
outsource the cheat protection to a group who has a dedicated team to
handling the problem. Punk Buster anyone? At least if this were to
happen, one group would be responsible for the blame. Currently, all
complaints get directed to another group when a cheat isnt detected. CD
dont work? Well tell valve to fix vac. VAC dont work? Well maybe you
should try VAC. See what i mean? Neither work, and CD only causes
problems with steam updates and does something that steam should do.

Valve just use punk buster. Let them worry about the cheats. 1.6 in its
current state needs enough to be fixed in the server code alone. You
guys really can't afford to be wasting your manhours on VAC as well.

Go to www.won.net click on sierra games to dl account wizard.
If you recall, when starting the game there was a link, "join won.net"
which is no longer there since 3109 updgrade.
Now before I dl the account wizard, I eihter got "not authorized by won
servers" or "cd in use". I then decided to update the account and it stopped
my problem. I am not 100% sure this had an effect,so I can not specifiy as
to how. It did however, allow me on the servers without delay and have had
not a problem since.

RE: [hlds_linux] CD-KEY in use

2002-09-27 Thread ChuckK

I don't have the patience to wait for it to clear up when it happens to me, so I
starting experimenting. The only way I can manually get it to release me is to close
my client and close the server down.(Just the HL engine, not talking about rebooting
the whole server.) Shutting just one or the other down doesn't seem to release it.
After I have successfully shutdown and restarted both server and client, I can then
successful connect again. In my case, the whole problem began when I didn't have a
wad file that was expected as the map was starting up, and the server wouldn't
download it to me. Even though I don't explicitly have downloads turned off. It
appeared that it thought I already had it and crashed and burned when it tried
starting the map up without it, so my connection was already in advanced stages with
the server.

Yes,
I get the same thing .. what gets me is that I have had my cd-key for
along time now and have not shared it with anyone (I feel that if I paid

I have alot of servers that I help others with that run my mod and I
frequent alot of them. if I disconnect then reconnect to another without
fully going back to desktop I get the "CD-KEY in use" .
Is there a fix for this that I might have missed here on the board ?
