RE: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes

2005-02-05 Thread kama

tried everything from 1000 up to 1... I have been running servers
since early 2000... And have start to get them after a while. And only in
1.6 and CSS.

Back then it was FreeBSD 4.2 on a dual p3 550 with an own linux_base.
I could run 4 public 13 slots (1 reserved) servers on that spec. That
server runned either dc or de card.

And as I said, I'll try another chipset on the NIC. It will not cost me
more time than the time it takes to travel to the server location and
switch cards...

Device polling is generally bad for games due to the increased latency.
Its only of real benefit if you are seeing interrupt saturation typically
common for routing or high volume proxies.

I could not notice any difference either on or off. Also, those with the
fxp's on them are not as populated as the other with the bge's.

Hello,
The FXP drivers have always known to be the best for minimizing
cpu usage, and keeping low latency on high loads. However, you can
further increase this performance on FreeBSD (probably Linux too, but
not my forte) by using device polling.

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=polling&apropos=0&sektion=0&man
path=FreeBSD+5.3-RELEASE+and+Ports&format=html

I believe this only work with cards that support it, and all the FXP pro
series should support it.

The problem is that I see chokespikes on many of the server, if not all.
They either run bge or fxp. I will get an em NIC available later and will
test that card instead. afaik em is not a miibus card as bge and fxp are.
I dont know if it will change anything with other NIC, but I am willing to
try.

With these lagspikes, are they latency related spikes or is it noticable
from choke?

I have seen choke spikes every now and then. perhaps its NIC related. I
have to try and find a oneunit NIC and test it. My servers uses the bge
and fxp cards.

What is the driver called for the d-link card?

I have seen choke spikes every now and then. perhaps its NIC related. I

What is the driver called for the d-link card?

I'm not saying this adapter is not suited to servers running linux /

My conclusion, wasn't relly a conclusion at all.

I was out of leads as to how the problem could have been fixed, and the
fact I couldn't see any network response issues, no CPU or processing
issues, I decided to take Stephen's advice to try and change my NIC.

I was fortunate that it worked, and even more so that he had taken the

Re: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes

2005-02-02 Thread kama

Hej,

There are a couple new once... There was some reason why I choosed rh9.
probably some of the libs needed a newer version... since there where a
lot of changes between 5.2.1 and 5.3 I cant compare the two installs. In
5.3 I see a higher average CPU usage, but the servers seems to respond
faster and feel smoother.

2005-02-01 Thread Reza A. Ambler
I use linux_base-rh-9, and get about 30-40 latency on an Athlon XP 2500+
with 256MB ram, and about 14-16 players.

Here is the little quick tutorial I wrote up. Email me if you have any
questions or there is anything I should append/remove.
Thanks

Drop fedora, run FreeBSD. SRCDS runs excellently on FreeBSD and I can
point you to a tutorial if you're interested. and no this is not a
Fedora is lame flame, but in my expierience SRCDS has run perfectly on
lesser hardware with no issues on FreeBSD.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Hey everyone,

I'm running my srcds on Linux Fedora Core 3. Ever since I have setup, I
have been getting massive lag spikes.

I am running a P4 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, on a OC-3 line. I have spent much
time evaluating the network connections with my ISP, and with no luck, I
hopefully turn to this mailing list for some answers.

Has anyone else been having these spikes? Is there a known solution?

Re: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes

2005-02-01 Thread Ian mu
Hmm odd, does look a bit game or o.s orientated, I'm assuming stuff
like dns is all working fine (dont think it could start without it),
nothing in cs logs if you tail it? Oddly enough if it pings outside
the game and top looks ok, I would think a little more like its the
game itself if there's no evidence anywhere, but naturally cant remove
o.s out of it.

Just out of interest, been trying centos dist, which is basically
redhat enterprise 3 rebadged you can download as a 1 cd server (and
free unlike redhat es3), installs in about 10mins flat. Just trying
that atm on one machine, and seems ok, but early days yet. Just
thought would throw that one in in case didnt want to go freebsd and
wanted another stable alternative.

Try switching to FC2. Thats what we use for 10 servers, and it works
perfectly.
Owen T. Soroke wrote:
I have previously run all of my hlds servers on FreeBSD.
I think I'm going to head back that way if I can't fix this problem on
Fedora Core 3 soon. I decided to switch to Fedora because this machine
is dedicated to my srcds processes, and it seemed rather sensible to run
it in a native environment, rather than using the linux_base emulation
the comes with FreeBSD.
cat /proc/mtrr (results)
reg00: base=0x ( 0MB), size=1024MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x3ff0 (1023MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1
Looking forward to your synopsis Ian.
Thanks for your reply. If your all just as confused as I am, then maybe
FreeBSD (my personal flavorite) will be a solution.
I've never had these problems using that O/S.
Cheers,

RE: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes

2005-01-31 Thread Owen T. Soroke
Hi Ian,

Thanks again for taking your time to respond.

I have in fact been using top to check processes, and I am always
running below 10% CPU when the lag spikes start and finish.

Also, even though the pings in game show all clients around 900, when I
ping the box from a machine on the same connection I am playing on
(client side), I am getting response times under 80 ms.

Traceroute to the server IP also shows under 100 ms responses.

I am in British Columbia, and the server is in Minnesota, so 80-100ms is
very normal for connection time.

I think I am going to try installing FreeBSD 4.9 and see if that gives
me the same results. What is your opinion?

Cheers,

Owen

That looks pretty ok really (have seen a few weird ones where some mobos
seem to lead to odd video memory settings along with bios video ram
setup was all and made me wonder if something similar was happening),
have you tried running top at a higher rate and watching for the lag
spikes to see if any process at all peaks at the same time? Just quite
surprising not to see something sneaky going on somewhere.

Do pings only sky in game, or do they when pinging from outside the game
to the machine when it spikes?

RE: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes

2005-01-31 Thread Owen T. Soroke

Cheers,

Owen (hapos)

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Hey everyone,

I'm running my srcds on Linux Fedora Core 3. Ever since I have setup, I
have been getting massive lag spikes.

I am running a P4 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, on a OC-3 line. I have spent much
time evaluating the network connections with my ISP, and with no luck, I
hopefully turn to this mailing list for some answers.

Has anyone else been having these spikes? Is there a known solution?

Re: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes

2005-01-31 Thread Ian mu
Nah wasn't dismissing the oc3 thing, was just suggesting that I've
never heard of anyone directly on a 155meg line which is typically a
fibre optic speed which could have caused a problem (unlikely I agree
network hardware related), but you seem to have tested the network
side (assuming all people only get lag to the last hop...and is the
lag only in game, or is out out of bounds too, ie from dos etc they
still ping bad?)

Also out of interest, what does your cat /proc/mtrr show? Just another
one worth checking along with kjournald if its looking like the o.s.

just a reminder, do u have any cron job which ran in 1 mins interval?
and do u hv ext3 with kjournald on? in my previous experience, kjournald
_may_ introduce lag spike if wrongly set, or after an fresh installation
which have many new files.

However, I am not sure of the O/S, or srcds at this point.

Not aware of any, but I doubt your on an oc-3 line (your ISP may be, but
what about out of your machine), I'd also change any rcon passwords ;).
Have you got people to do traceroutes to the server when there's lag
spikes? Also watch the cpu usage and load on the server as they're
normally the best indicators of where the lag is coming from.
