tried everything from 1000 up to 1... I have been running servers since early 2000... And have start to get them after a while. And only in 1.6 and CSS. Back then it was FreeBSD 4.2 on a dual p3 550 with an own linux_base. I could run 4 public 13 slots (1 reserved) servers on that spec. That server runned either dc or de card. And as I said, I'll try another chipset on the NIC. It will not cost me more time than the time it takes to travel to the server location and switch cards... /Bjorn On Sat, 5 Feb 2005, Reza A. Hello, The FXP drivers have always known to be the best for minimizing cpu usage, and keeping low latency on high loads. However, you can further increase this performance on FreeBSD (probably Linux too, but not my forte) by using device polling. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=polling&apropos=0&sektion=0&man path=FreeBSD+5.3-RELEASE+and+Ports&format=html I believe this only work with cards that support it, and all the FXP pro series should support it. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 03, 2005 5:13 AM To: hlds_linux@list.valvesoftware.com Subject: RE: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes > rl -- RealTek 8129/8139 Fast Ethernet device driver > Not to offend anyone using or having written the 'rl' driver for FreeBSD, but I'd suspect and replace any realtech based card with an Intel based card. The problem is that I see chokespikes on many of the server, if not all. They either run bge or fxp. I will get an em NIC available later and will test that card instead. afaik em is not a miibus card as bge and fxp are. With these lagspikes, are they latency related spikes or is it noticable from choke? I have seen choke spikes every now and then. perhaps its NIC related. I have to try and find a oneunit NIC and test it. My servers uses the bge and fxp cards. What is the driver called for the d-link card? /Bjorn On Wed, 2 Feb 2005, Owen T. RE: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes
My conclusion, wasn't relly a conclusion at all. I was out of leads as to how the problem could have been fixed, and the fact I couldn't see any network response issues, no CPU or processing issues, I decided to take Stephen's advice to try and change my NIC. I was fortunate that it worked, and even more so that he had taken the time to e-mail me. Without this suggestion, I could very well have still been searching for a solution. The NIC card was a fpx0 - Intel PRO/100+ adapter. I'm not saying this adapter is not suited to servers running linux / unix srcds. It was probably just a bad card. I changed the card to a D-Link. Hope this provides some insight. Hej, There are a couple new once... There was some reason why I choosed rh9. probably some of the libs needed a newer version... since there where a lot of changes between 5.2.1 and 5.3 I cant compare the two installs. In 5.3 I see a higher average CPU usage, but the servers seems to respond faster and feel smoother. /Bjorn On Tue, 1 Feb 2005, Andy Shinn wrote: > Theres new linux_base packages?!?!? How do they run? I use linux_base-rh-9, and get about 30-40 latency on an Athlon XP 2500+ with 256MB ram, and about 14-16 players. Here is the little quick tutorial I wrote up. Re: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes
Hmm odd, does look a bit game or o.s orientated, I'm assuming stuff like dns is all working fine (dont think it could start without it), nothing in cs logs if you tail it? Oddly enough if it pings outside the game and top looks ok, I would think a little more like its the game itself if there's no evidence anywhere, but naturally cant remove o.s out of it. Just out of interest, been trying centos dist, which is basically redhat enterprise 3 rebadged you can download as a 1 cd server (and free unlike redhat es3), installs in about 10mins flat. Just trying that atm on one machine, and seems ok, but early days yet. Just thought would throw that one in in case didnt want to go freebsd and wanted another stable alternative. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux

RE: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes
Hi Ian, Thanks again for taking your time to respond. I have in fact been using top to check processes, and I am always running below 10% CPU when the lag spikes start and finish. Also, even though the pings in game show all clients around 900, when I ping the box from a machine on the same connection I am playing on (client side), I am getting response times under 80 ms. Traceroute to the server IP also shows under 100 ms responses. I am in British Columbia, and the server is in Minnesota, so 80-100ms is very normal for connection time. I think I am going to try installing FreeBSD 4.9 and see if that gives me the same results. What is your opinion? Re: [hlds_linux] Massive Lag Spikes
Nah wasn't dismissing the oc3 thing, was just suggesting that I've never heard of anyone directly on a 155meg line which is typically a fibre optic speed which could have caused a problem (unlikely I agree network hardware related), but you seem to have tested the network side (assuming all people only get lag to the last hop...and is the lag only in game, or is out out of bounds too, ie from dos etc they still ping bad?) Also out of interest, what does your cat /proc/mtrr show? Just another one worth checking along with kjournald if its looking like the o.s. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux

just a reminder, do u have any cron job which ran in 1 mins interval? and do u hv ext3 with kjournald on? in my previous experience, kjournald _may_ introduce lag spike if wrongly set, or after an fresh installation which have many new files. chris Owen T.
