LOL...I have a similar yet different quote I use to remind me of who's ass
to kiss in business.

*Be careful of the toes you step on today for they may be attached to the
ass you have to kiss tomorrow.*

If it was me as head CEO of Valve...I'd tell VU to take their threats and
kick rocks.

If we ever see HL3, I bet that VU will not be involved. VU made at least one
fatal mistake, and that was to threaten to sue Valve. You don't threaten to
sue your business partners!

There is a simple principle that I call the Butt Kissing Money Principle.
It goes like this - if money flows from point A to B, then the butt kissing
flows back from point B to A. If the butt kissing does not flow back from
point B to A, then the money will stop flowing from point A to B.

VU makes money off of Valve, probably a lot of money. You don't get nasty
with those you make money from, you kiss their butts - assuming you want to
continue to make money off of them. VU blew it big time.

One possible, probably future, decision. Get VU out of the loop and deal
with this yourself so that you don't have anyone else telling you what
you
have to do, and what you can and cannot do. Fire VU and do it your way

That would be a decision that VUGames will make since they are
responsible for the retail version of the product.

The difference between the retail version of the game and the steam

Could you get away with releasing an update for hl2.exe that removes
the
securom protection? That's what happened with Neverwinter Nights, they
decided it was just too buggy so they removed it. Its pointless anyway
seeing as you have to authenticate online.

You say Vivendi forced you to add it to the CD/DVD. If this was a case
of were not publishing the game unless you add the protection, then
you've done what they said and they've published it, but does that mean
you can't remove it via a steam update? If its in a contract then you
could just perhaps speak to the Lawyers about having it removed on the
grounds that its causing too many problems.

It seems silly to me that the people who use a pirated version of HL2
can play it without swapping their HL2 DVD/CD into the drive everytime
they want to play it. But the people who actually bought the game are
forced into pointless hassle for no apparent reason.

Copying the CD/DVD achieves nothing. You could actually just give the
HL2 DVD away on a magazine and just make it so you have to purchase the
game via steam, it would just save people the massive download. That
would take the money away from Vivendi too. :)

Have you tried looking for any firmware updates for the drive? I have
talked to a few customers with this problem and most have had updates
  available from the manufacturer.

Also one of the other solution (that has not worked in all cases) is if
you have multiple drives move the dvd drive you are playing on so it is
the first drive letter. So if your cd is E: and dvd is F: swap them.

We are aware of these issues and working on ways to correct them so
please don't resort to cd cracks etc. You still have to play through
Steam so we will know if a crack is used.

I did not want to segment the linux users amongst two lists, especially
considering that most users run both server types.
People should limit discussion on the HL2 client and Steam client
however unless it is directly related to the Linux dedicated server. If
you want to talk about the client please use the Steam forums at

No, both versions can work in offline mode forever*. The only
functional difference between the two is that people who used a
retail CD key currently need to have their CD/DVD in the CD/DVD
 drive to play.

 * (reinstalling the OS, blowing away (resetting) the registry,
deleting files under the Steam folder, running under another user
account or copying the install to another machine will cause the
client to need to re-authenticate itself).

Out of curiousity (I bought it on STEAM), is this protection really
VALVe's doing or Vivendi's? I know VALVe has some built in anti-piracy
stuff (Apparently, I've heard the AI code stops working after x amoutn of
time), but do they control what method is used to create the cd/dvd media,
or does Vivendi as the publisher decide how to pack it onto the disk?

Thanks for all the responses, I did download the game via steam, but
when entering the key it asks me to insert dvd to authenticate, that
worked fine, only when trying to play the game it says unable to
authenticate original disc within time limit

Ive tried making a backup and mounting the image to a virtual drive, but
the copy protection software see's then and will not load the game,
Emulation software detected please place original disc in drive

 Im still stuck,

I purchased the game from GAME uk, 1. Not knowing it would need the dvd
to play whenever i wanted to play HL2 or CS:S, 2. It being those new
 hi-tech copyright protected dvd rom's.

I meet the Minimum system spec, i have a DVD-RW drive, but because my
drive does not support SecuROM R5 (made by sony) i will have to pay for
a new dvd-rw drive or a standard dvd-rom drive which does support
SecuROM, oh and theres no way of knowing which ones do until u buy
 them!! GOOD ONE VU GAMES!!

The error i get is Unable to authenticate original disc within time
 limit.

If i had known all this i would have just ordered VIA steam, and then
not have to worry about using dvd to play everytime, also this will
 make the dvd
go thru some wear and tear, what am i supposed to do when it gets
scratched buy a new DVD because this one is so well protected i cannot
 even make a backup?

Other people are definately having this problem, i read it on the
steampowered forums before they conveniently went down, i would like to
 know
of anybody on here whose having same problem maybe, or maybe had the
same problem with others games and knows a way around it? before i go
and spend yet another £20 on this game to buy a new dvd-rom drive.

I tried downloading Generic SecuROM crack v6.0 by pedro, but this
program wont run on my pc, it says internal error

i have spent £32.99 on this game, have the original DVD but still cant
 play it

Its definitely vivendi doing but with valves help, because ultimately the cd
key registers with steam, and steam determines whether it's a ati voucher, high
street dvd serial, or steam purchase, then enforces use of cd to play, does
anybody know which email address I can email valve to get my account switched
so that steam thinks I purchased VIA steam?

Have you tried looking for any firmware updates for the drive? I have
talked to a few customers with this problem and most have had updates
available from the manufacturer.

Also one of the other solution (that has not worked in all cases) is if
you have multiple drives move the dvd drive you are playing on so it is
the first drive letter. So if your cd is E: and dvd is F: swap them.

We are aware of these issues and working on ways to correct them so
please don't resort to cd cracks etc. You still have to play through
Steam so we will know if a crack is used.

Also I hope you all that are having problems have submitted an incident

If you want to return the product that choice is up to you and I can
understand your frustrations. We are trying to find a workaround for
this issue though.
One customer just reported that removing the program AnyDVD seems to
also fix this error. Another reported that removing Sonic DLA resolves
this as well. If you have any third party dvd software installed you
might try removing it to see if it resolves the problem.

RE: [hlds_linux] OFF TOPIC: Half Life 2 DVD authentication ERROR

2004-11-18 Thread Peter Holcroft
Could you get away with releasing an update for hl2.exe that removes the
securom protection? That's what happened with Neverwinter Nights, they
decided it was just too buggy so they removed it. Its pointless anyway
seeing as you have to authenticate online.

You say Vivendi forced you to add it to the CD/DVD. If this was a case of
were not publishing the game unless you add the protection, then you've
done what they said and they've published it, but does that mean you can't
remove it via a steam update? If its in a contract then you could just
perhaps speak to the Lawyers about having it removed on the grounds that its
causing too many problems.

It seems silly to me that the people who use a pirated version of HL2 can
play it without swapping their HL2 DVD/CD into the drive everytime they want
to play it. But the people who actually bought the game are forced into
pointless hassle for no apparent reason.

Copying the CD/DVD achieves nothing. You could actually just give the HL2
DVD away on a magazine and just make it so you have to purchase the game via
steam, it would just save people the massive download. That would take the
money away from Vivendi too.

Back when OP4 came out, and a lot of people were having the exact same
problem - IE screwball copy protection that didn't work on all drives -
those that had problems had to go to ...um...Sierra, I believe, it's been a
few years...and complain to them, not Valve. I went through this and Sierra
finally offered to give me back my money. At that point, I found a no-CD
crack, and I was able to play.

No, both versions can work in offline mode forever*. The only
functional difference between the two is that people who used a retail
CD key currently need to have their CD/DVD in the CD/DVD drive to play.

RE: [hlds_linux] OFF TOPIC: Half Life 2 DVD authentication ERROR

2004-11-18 Thread Alfred Reynolds
I did not want to segment the linux users amongst two lists, especially
considering that most users run both server types.

People should limit discussion on the HL2 client and Steam client
however unless it is directly related to the Linux dedicated server. If
you want to talk about the client please use the Steam forums at
www.steampowered.com.

Thanks Alfred,
as long as it is a server discussion it's ok, but people should stop
off-topic HL2 client messages, especially in a linux-server list :-)
Hope your answer will be read ...

2004-11-17 Thread Ray Spaulding
Maybe I'm missing something here since I got the game via STEAM...but why
can't you just install the STEAM program from their site and then just enter
the CD key. When I was given an ATI HL2 key for a tech-job for a friend I
just entered the CD key into steam and the game downloaded and attached to
my account. I fail to see why this wouldn't work for you unless they divided
the two versions with different key categories or something gay like that.

www.gamecopyworld.com - get a patch, it should be there soon - theres ways
around securerom / safedisc / whatever - always have been. I have been able
to make a copy of a disc using securerom v4 and not need a patch lol. Im
sure there will be a way around v5.

I will give you a hint. twinpeaks method, blindwrite bwa builder, alchohol
120%, and 1x read/write. google 'twinpeaks method' to get some directions.

As for me posting this here? I hate copy-protection that interferes with
someones enjoyment of the game. I patch all my games so i dont have to use
disc otherwise my disks get screwed up after a bit. I do not condone
pirating but i do condone personal backups.

companies are forgetting about there customers. They forget they are they
