1.7, but nothing about parallel sysplex.
...

Interesting, because that is exactly what SYSPLEX co-existance means.

1.3 cannot run in the same SYSPLEX as 1.7 & 1.4 cannot run with 1.8.

It's N through N-3.

What 'unsupported' means is if something breaks, IBM will not fix it.
They may do it on a 'time & materials' basis; there's so guarantee that they
will (or will still have the skills/knowledge to) do so.

Steve (C),

if you still need a newsserver, there are a number of totally free
newsservers around on the internet, no subscription needed, usually no
posting allowed, but you don't need this since you must post via email.
If you need one, Google for "free newsservers", there are lists maintained
by hobbiests (as there are hobbiests for anything you can think of on the
internet).
At the moment I use 204.153.244.171 already for a year or so.

Co-existence limitations do not need to be restricted to sysplex.
Non-sysplex systems do also communicate and interact (JES, GRS etc. etc.)
and the limitations also apply to that broader level, which include sysplex

Is this correct?

Non-sysplex communication is usually less restricted. Obvious example
would be TCP/IP connection, ftp transfer etc. but also NJE (JES)
communication is much less restrictive - it support quite old releases
(AFAIK MVS, pre-OS/390).
What is usually restricted to N-3 it is all kinds of datasharing, using
coupling facility (PSysplex) or just sharing of control datasets, like
RACfdb, RMM, HSM, SMS CDSes, etc.

Natasa, HSM currently only supports WORM tapes for ABARS; ABACKUP and
ARECOVER.
If you, or anyone else, believes they have a good reason to use WORM for
other HSM functions please let HSM development know. They really do want
to know why someone would want to do this. One way to do this might be to
raise a ETR/PMR and explain your requirement; I am sure that would get to
them.

It used to be n-3. When IBM changed z/OS to an annual release schedule,

That simplification of the coexistence policy was (IMHO) the only really
good thing that came from the release schedule change.

Usenet and[1] Network News refers to the facility. The term usegroups
is nonstandard; you'll have to ask whoever used it what he means. A
newsgroup is a named abstract entity on Usenet, which you identify on
the Newsgroups header field of a news article. Listserv is a common
mailing list program; the word also refers to a server running that
program.

>I don't see a way to set up a connection to / account with, say,
comp.lang.cobol.

There is no such thing. You set up an account on a news server, then
you subscribe to comp.lang.cobol on that server.

[1] There are subtle distinctions, but I don't believe that you need
to worry about them in this context.

I wasn't suggesting new device-dependent code for the old access
methods; I was suggesting a compatibility interface similar to that
used to allow you to open a DCB to a subsystem data set. Currently
OPEN has the ability to automatically acquire an ACB, open it and link
it to the DCB. I suspect that IBM could lift from VSE and OS/VS1 what
little code is needed beyond what is already there for SYSOUT.

>Given the graying, balding and aging of the MVS etc. community,

That won't make them go away. They are an economic reality, and if IBM
wants to retain the customer base then it will need to provide for a
smooth migration.

>The need is to move any still needed functions of BPAM and BSAM to
>newer architectures, not to move BPAM and BSAM.

No, the need is to preserve investment. The customer doesn't care
about "architecture"; he cares about fiscal issues, one of which is
the residual value of code that he has already spent a lot of money
one. Tell him that he must spend additional money to rewrite that code
and you have removed his incentive to stay with IBM.

Also, your statement has an implication contrary to fact. There was no
proposal to "move BPAM and BSAM"; there was a proposal to provide a
device-independent CI.

>I agree that changes to name lengths and use of Unicode will require

Why?

If you acknowledge that, then why do you oppose the CI that is
necessary in order to make it incremental?

CISP VISA compliance

2005-06-28 Thread Davis Kriss P

Dear Colleagues,

I know this is more of a business question, but perhaps some of you have
been involved in the technical compliance part of this.

There are new credit card compliance rules (firewall placement, etc.)
coming into effect for VISA credit card transactions.

There seems to be two parts (we are tier 2 based on our transaction
loads and VISA's CISP documentation).

1. The periodic scan of our servers/system by a certified "scanner" to
make sure our systems are secure.

2. The self-assessment Q and A document we need to fill out

I would be interested if anyone has used a consulting firm for one or
both compliance parts. The Q and A part we have reviewed just is not
clear enough to us to know what VISA is asking for in certain
situations. Getting someone in that has a track record and knowledge of
the ins and outs of the CISP specification to help us would be great.

Thanks in advance.

be procedural in moving old panels and datasets to new system

a sample CLIST ISPPDF that does the basic allocations and fires

JES/NJE(P) is not restricted to n-3.
It never has been.

GRS does not communicate outside of an instance of MVS (SYSPLEX is considered
an instance).

Co-existance (in my mind) has always meant within a SYSPLEX.

The original quote was a SYSPLEX one.
If I wanted to, I could communicate with an XA system through NJE from a z/OS
system.
I would just have to ensure I don't use constructs that are not supported by XA.

Okay, so you look at column 50 in the listing and you see a blank? Now
what? It would help if the message included the offending literal
text, in hexadecimal, and explained SI and SO for the benefit of those
who have no reason to understand DBCS. If I didn't know what DBCS was
I would have found the message to be totally opaque, and as is I still
wouldn't have known what the offending data were.

While column 50 might look blank iff you are using a printed listing
(a rarity in the days of syntax highlighting editors and a waste of
trees) -- the surrounding columns would have something like:

Move 'a 0d 2 ic$k34 d pd e,x d' to DFHEI1234

That should be enough for anyone to realize it is a translator problem.

Last night we IPL'd the programming LPAR. The other two Lpars lost their HFS's

Re: WORM tape mount - type mismatch

2005-06-28 Thread Russell Witt
Natasa,

A WORM cartridge cannot be re-used (Write ONCE, Read Many). Once data has
been written on a WORM cartridge, you can only add more data to it (either a
MOD operation to the last file or adding secondary datasets behind it).
Putting a WORM cartridge in SCRATCH status means you have destroyed the old
one and have a new one that you want to relabel to have the same volser as
the original; which means it has been deleted and then a new one re-defined.
But it will be a completely new cartridge, you cannot re-initialize and you
cannot re-use a WORM cartridge once data has been written to it. Only add
additional data to it.

It is the address of the newsserver, that you specify in your newsreader's
account info.

E.g. in Outlook Express, you define a News account, on the "Server" tab you
specify this address after: "Server name:", like you would specify someting
like "news.myprovider.com" when using your own provider's newsserver.

Well, he's not the only graybeard who didn't get that memo. I missed it
too. I just looked it up, and Ed is correct -- IDENTIFY *must* specify an
address within an already-loaded/fetched/etc. program.

Now why'd they go and do that? That means I can't use that old CompSci
trick of compile-to-memory-and-attach-task any more. Shucks. I remember
when I did that with Fortran arrays in college.

(I know, I know, it's all about security and integrity. No comments in that
area, please.)

Not the same thing, of course, but what does that restriction do for JIT
languages? ISTM that the IDENTIFY service would be useful there, except
that a JIT language compiles to dynamically-obtained memory, not to a load
module.

be procedural in moving old panels and datasets to new system

LOGON proc. Didn't say how it was built, in prior releases there's
a sample CLIST ISPPDF that does the basic allocations and fires

to spot obvious differences

It seems that the systems man made some changes to the zOS to fix this
problem before he left. He did not say what he did to fix it, and it
will be a couple of weeks before I can find out what he did.

This problem has gone away. Now I have a new problem. The VSM
component abends with an 0C4 rc4.

PSW 078D1000 917BBEE4, module IGVSFMAN, CSECT*UNKNOWN, offset

GPR 12R 117BC598 13R 116021F8 14R 117B92E8 15R 917BBA3E

I get about 2+ pages of the VSM report before this abend occurs. The
bad news is that for this problem, I'm looking for a memory leak. So
the VSM reports would be my initial focus.

I have checked the allocated libraries and see only the Z6RESx packs
used for the SBLS libraries. There are no OS390 packs showing on any
files allocated to my TSO session. So I'm comfortable that it seems
that I'm using the new zOS definitions rather than the older OS390 version.

The IPCSPARM dataset was not specifically allocated. When I manually
allocated the file and went into IPCS, it still abended.

FWIW, I am looking at an SVC dump created on z/OS 1.4. My system is
z/OS 1.6.

I do not have access to IBM to find out if there are any APARS for this
problem. I'll have to wait until my system guy gets back in about 2 weeks.

In the mean time, I'll continue to look over the procs, and libraries.
My first stop today will be the MIGLIB as mentioned earlier.

I'll also be checking with a vendor over the XPEDITOR product to see if
that might be interfering with my IPCS system.

You not only have a software problem (possibly) you have a management
problem. If you have a systems programmer who can make changes and leave
without leaving notes on those changes (minimal change management), and
you have no backup systems programmer (employed OR "rented") to handle
technical issues while the primary guy goes on vacation, then in my
perhaps-not-so-humble opinion, management has put your system at risk.
What happens if the OS decides to lay down and die in the middle of your
business cycle (whatever it is), and no one is there with the skills
and/or tools to fix it?

Obviously, you can't employ two "guru-level" systems programmers just for
z/OS, and another pair for CICS, and another pair for DB2 unless you have
the kind of business that requires it and the kind of revenue that can pay
for it - but you CAN do some cross-training and some policy-and-procedure
writing to make the situation less risky.

I'm not positive this is your problem since you don't have automove
filesystems, but don't run BPXSTOP in a shared HFS environment.

A command became available at a certain PTF level of OS/390 2.10 (I think
it went back OS/390 2.7) to use instead: F BPXOINIT,SHUTDOWN=FILESYS.
It will sync data to disk and move automove file systems.

Review the z/OS 1.4 UNIX planning manual under "shared HFS" and also
for the procedures for shutting down OMVS prior to IPL (although
you can't use F OMVS,SHUTDOWN on OS/390 2.10).

Companies which *buys* systems should have system exploitation staff.
Last but not least: it is much less probable to blow up the system when

Re: HFS dismount

2005-06-28 Thread Aaron Walker
If your mounts are marked NOAUTOMOVE, then they will be unmounted when
their owning system goes away. You basically want your system-specific
datasets (/etc/, /var/, /dev/, stuff like that) to be NOAUTOMOVE, as it's
(generally) ok for them to be unmounted. Items like your version root,
sysplex root, /opt/ directories, other things that are 'shared' across
LPARs you would want to have defined as AUTOMOVE. Read the Shared HFS in a
Sysplex chapter in the OS390 Unix Planning Guide. Also make sure you have
the distributed BRLM going, too.

So we'll most likely be asking customers to have MORE page packs (and for

(driven by a little experience) that it's a rather good idea to be able to
sustain dumping those large address spaces we're getting used to having.

Yes, you'll move from 31-bit to 64-bit. You'll loose your expanded

Re: IDENTIFY limitations and their circumvention (was ISKE/IVSK)

2005-06-28 Thread john gilmore
There is an old technology, one that is ordinarily used statically, that can
also be used somewhat dynamically to circumvent the security-orient[at]ed
restrictions that have been imposed upon the

use of IDENTIFY proper.

It employs a preassembled n-element transfer vector, each element of which
is an eight-byte unsigned integer in the sequence

0, 1, 2, . . . , n - 1,

i.e., a zero-origin array of n elements having its subscripts as the values
of these elements, that is bound as a single-RSECT program object, call it
RANKS000, and brought into storage in the usual way.

A management program elsewhere keeps track of the number

0 <= u <= n

of elements of this array that are in use, have been assigned as the rank of
a virtual-storage address for which pseudo-VERIFY facilities are required.

A necessarily unique name for such an address, call it GUBBINS0, is chosen;
and a traditional IDENTIFY is used to create a CDE for GUBBINS within the
RANKS000 program object at the address

addr(RANKS000) + 8u,

after which u is incremented by 1. A STORAGE macro followed by a directed
LOAD for GUBBINS0 then yields the load address of GUBBINS0, which the
management program stores as the corresponding element of ANOTHER array,
this one a dynamic one that can be stored into. The rank found at the
address for which IDENTIFY has created a CDE for GUBBINS0 can then be used
to address this second address array to obtain the actual virtual-storage
location of GUBBINS0.

This management program uses a dedicated register, DXD, CXD, etc., i.e., the
HLASM analogues of PL/I controlled storage, to manage the dynamic storage it
uses efficiently.

Described in extenso this scheme sounds complicated. In fact it is nothing
but a very simple indirect-addressing one.

Its chief limitation is that n is fixed when RANKS000 is assembled. Its
chief merit is that busybodies will find it all but impossible to interdict
its use or that of schemes like it. (I have no objection, I indeed welcome,
legitimate security precautions; but this one was larger than life,
interdicted too much; and its circumvention is entirely appropriate.)

The "supported" part of "all supported releases" is also important. As
an example, when z/OS 1.6 came out, it co-existed with z/OS 1.3. But

SORT and SUM function

2005-06-28 Thread Mautalen Juan Guillermo
Hi,

It is probably something very obvious, but i am having a hard time
figuring out what is wrong...I am trying to use the SUM function
provided by DFSORT.
My control statements are, as the documentation indicates, something
like:

SORT FIELDS=(20,5,CH,A)
SUM FIELDS=(30,4,BI)

When i run the DFSORT (as a batch job), it ends with RC=0. However, the
SUM is not performed (but the records are sorted, tough).
Despite many records having identical value in position 20-24, their
values in field 30-33 are not added. It seems that the SUM statement is
ignored.

Any ideas of what could be happening?

Thanks in advance,

JUAN MAUTALEN

Well, it's hard to say without seeing your input and output, but one guess
would be that all of
your sum fields overflowed. Note that when sum fields overflow, the pair
of records involved
in the overflow is left unchanged and neither record is deleted. Look for
message ICE152I
which indicates overflow occurred.

If your fields did overflow and you got RC=0, then you have OVLFO=RC0 in
effect (this is
DFSORT's shipped default). If you don't want RC=0 when fields overflow,
use
OPTION OVFLO=RC4 or OVFLO=RC16 as appropriate.

If that's not it, then I'd need to see an example of your input SORT fields
and SUM fields and
what you got for output. You can use 30,4,HEX to display the SUM fields in
hex. You can
send me the info offline ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) if you like.

Re: IDENTIFY limitations and their circumvention (was ISKE/IVSK)

2005-06-28 Thread Charles Mills
John implicitly raises a question I was going to ask. What the heck is
the security exposure in letting a program define a new entry point in
GETMAIN storage (but not in defining a new entry point in CSECT
storage)?

Especially when it is as easy as John describes to circumvent (or even
easier to circumvent - albeit less flexibly - if one had a large,
meaningless, empty load module that one loaded as a "GETMAIN loaded from
disk").

chief merit is that busybodies will find it all but impossible to
interdict
its use or that of schemes like it. (I have no objection, I indeed
welcome,
legitimate security precautions; but this one was larger than life,
interdicted too much; and its circumvention is entirely appropriate.)

If this is just a matter of curiosity, surely
you old time hackers can do more than speculate. For example,
look in the MVS Diagnosis Reference to find the module name called
by the IDENTIFY SVC. Find some microfiche older than SP4.3.0., and
read the module prolog.

As always, I must caution you as to the risks of actually using
undocumented interfaces.

There is a really excellent one that you get at via

http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l

We were considering a conversion to either (1) Windows; (2) iSeries; or
(3) Sun. I found that group. They are very enthusiastic, helpful, and
professional. The only thing wrong with them is that they don't get
bogged down in nostalgia like we sometimes do.

We didn't go forward due to some auditing "problems" that the company is
going through. First time that I have ever loved auditors!

DYNAMIC SVC QUESTION

2005-06-28 Thread Jay Paulson
I am looking for a way to display the SVC's that are running on our
systems (mainly the dynamically installed ones).
We have a couple of products that do this (i.e. Resolve and CA-EXAMINE).
However, these products don't run on all of our systems.
I mainly want to just know the SVC #'s that are in use so that we don't
accidentally give them out to other users via IEASVCxx.

I have been wandering around the manuals looking for a display command
but can't seem to find one.

IRRDPTAB is only needed if you use RACF. It loads some information into
memory that the RACF command processor uses to parse administrator
