I agree with Bill. The VM Workshops were around when SHARE and GUIDE did their
thing and before WAVV was formed. It wasn't an either/or in those days, nor is
it today. We brought the VM Workshop back to fill a need for VMers. Easy,
inexpensive education, and an opportunity to hang out with VMers to discuss
topics specifically relevant to the VM space. It seems to be working. I know
a lot of us are looking forward to the next WAVV and we will all miss hanging
out with Bennie.

If you are interested in location selection, I'd suggest contacting Bill
Munson to get on next year's committee. You can see from the
thread, everyone has some thoughts about it. This year's committee met the
day before the event to discuss next year's options. That's one of the
reasons it's important to have good representation on the
committee. Several locations were considered, including some of those
mentioned here. The list also included Washington State, Michigan State,
Richmond, Austin, U. of RI, Chicago, Boston, SUNY Binghamton, Penn
State etc.. This is how we selected OSU for 2011 and it was agreed that we
should at least consider the following when selecting the next location(s):
1.) Inexpensive (relatively speaking) to get there. Not just to the
airport, but from the airport to the campus.
2.) University locations only (non-commercial/corporate) to
 avoid/neutralize conflicts of some sort.
3.) Towards the center of the country to avoid losing attendees from the
 opposite coast.
4.) Airport relatively close to the campus (like less than 30 minutes if
 possible)
5.) Excellent Facilities at a reasonable price.

Each attending committee member had 2 votes (first and second choice). U.
of Kentucky, OSU, and U. of Nebraska (Omaha campus) took the top 3 votes in
that order. Bill's 2012 committee is already working on these for next
year. It's not always possible to get the dates, price, etc, which is
the reason for the backups. BTW, Rice, UT(Austin), Michigan State, U of
Arkansas, UMKC, were also on the short list. So plenty of options were on
 the table.

 I hope this helps.

Effective September 16th, after nearly 28 years in VM Development, I am
moving to a new role as a member of IBM Lab Services and Training. There
I will be part of the team that helps you, our clients, successfully bring
Linux to System z, both from a traditional consolidation perspective, as
well as exploitation of System z and z/VM's emerging technologies.

I don't make the move lightly or easily, but it serves both my own goals
and IBM's. I will continue to reside in Endicott with my friends in
Development, I will still annoy them with questions, and I will continue
to exert my influence over product plans. By being in Lab Services,
however, those questions and that influence will hopefully be the result
of deeper, more direct experience with you.

While I'm here, let me pause to again publicly thank my colleagues for
their many years of support. They always have taken the time to educate
me (over and over sometimes!) so that I can pass that knowledge on to you.

I will continue to hang out here and I will still see you at conferences.

What *will* change? Well, I'll be on the road more, so you'll get fewer
near-real-time answers from me on the listservers. (sigh) Oh, and I'll
be making more recommendations that you get a Services contract with Yours
Truly and the Chuckster to help you. (Hmmm do I get to charge twice?)
  :-D

See you in the funny papers.

z/VM OSA with z/OS guest

2010-07-30 Thread Charles Grady
Hello Fellow Listers;
In need of some help with z/VM and TCPIP for z/OS guest.
Here's the backgroung:

1) When running 5 z/OS LPARs the z/OS systems use the same OSA address,
such as 7D0 but have different IP addresses in their IP Parms. This works and
has worked well for a long period of time here.

2) We now need to have three z/OS guest machines up and running under z/VM
with full IP capability.
My communication wiz guy has been in touch with IBM and has been told that you
have to set the OSA up that way under z/VM too.
How can I dedicate 7E0-7E2 to three guest at one time?
It sounds like a communications disconnect to me, but what do I know.
At current time, I have each z/OS guest with his own triplet of unique OSA
addresses. Each one will work fine UNTIL they are all up and running, at which
time, we start seeing console hangs and what appears to be machine lockups.
Some times they will eventually clear themselves, sometimes not. And it
rotates as to which z/OS guest system hangs.
Thanks in advance.

z/VM 5.4 CHPID Device question - IOCDS ??

2010-06-25 Thread Charles Grady
Hello- we have the following configuration on a Z9 processor:
5-z/OS LPARS 1-z/VM LPAR. The IOCDS and all configurations are
managed from one of the z/OS LPARs. We recently updated the
IODFs to reflect that there are now OPTICAL DRIVES online to the
z/VM LPAR. The IODF has been activated to all LPARs. The problem-
we can NOT see the devices anywhere on the z/VM side. Not on the
HMC on in z/VM. The CHPIDS were 1F 4F and the devices were 950-958.
Even when we went to the ACTIVATE frame on the HMC-Nothing there.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Charles

Yes. But you need software on z/OS to print to IP printers. There are many
such. DRS from Levi, Ray, Shoup. We use JQP from MacKinney Software. In the
worst case, you can use the free IBM Network Print Facility. This last is a
bear to set up and control!

If you want to print a dataset, look at the lpr command in z/OS:

http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/f1a1b990/9.0

Looks like z/VM has an lpr command as well.

Do not clip a volume that z/OS doesn't own.

BTW, an mdisk that starts on cyl 1 is not a full pack mdisk. That means
that if your z/OS is running in an LPAR, it will see real cyl 0 (owned by
CP in this example), not cyl 1 (owned by Linux).

Caveat emptor: External backups of a live Linux guest will be fuzzy. That
is, incomplete and inconsistent, just as a z/OS backup would be if taken
using DDR on CMS while z/OS is running. Build your backup/restore
procedures accordingly. (Best is to shut down the Linux guest and then
copy the disks.)

Use CPFMTXA to put a VM-format VOL1 label on the disk. It will have a

a CP without an IFL in the LPAR. That's all I needed.

 thue...@kable.com 10/07/09 10:27AM
I have only one production z/LINUX and a test z/LINUX that runs just fine with
no IFL. Most of my production is on several z/VSE guests, but I needed a LINUX
for one function... The z--option was better than another INTEL box... Now if I
had a plan to add dozens of z/LINUX an IFL might look more attrictave. ... a
10 at 8 but a 1 at 2

Please explain, for those of us not yet involved in Linux, why
it's not cost effective. For example, if we already have z/VM running,
there is no additional cost involved.

I know that one most likely would not run a like this for long,
but being ask to install Linux PDQ in an LPAR that does NOT have a
 IFL assigned.
 Thanks for the reply.

Sure, it will work. But as you've identified, it's pretty much never
cost-effective over the long term to do so.

General OSA / connectivity question from a newbie

2009-08-14 Thread Charles Grady

OK dumb question #8763491264:

Have a brand new z/VM 5.4.0 @ RSU0902 in an LPAR on a Z9.
I also have 5 other LPARS running z/OS.

The only way that I can communicate with my VM right now is to go to a
dedicated real 3270 type terminal and log on ( or use the HMC ICC).
What / how do I get access from from the rest of the terminals in the shop?
I do have an OSA port available.
I know about the VTAM list etc on the z/OS side it's the z/VM side that
is presenting the questions. Also, what DOC covers this?

Thank you..

RSU instalation question

2009-08-06 Thread Charles Grady

I have just installed z/VM 5.4 and RSU0901.
I now see that RSU 0902 is out; yes I've ordered it.
Question: Can I now use SERVICE PUT2PROD that I have just used to install
the RSU0901 that was shipped along with the z/VM5.4 IIS?? Note: I have NOT
started
customizing anything yet.
It's been quite a few years since I've VMed anything - good to be back - but
IT'S CHANGED!
Appreciate your assistance. Thanks

8 trk -- you youngen.. What about the 7 trk?

Mike--You must be just a kid. I remember installing from 800BPI tapes
and using 556FCI tapes (flux changes per inch). I remember, 30 years or
so ago, taking my son to the data center on a Saturday and him spending
the morning rolling old DTR's (remember them) the length of the floor or
as far as they went since IBM only used as much tape as necessary to
ship PTF's on them.
