Oh Karen we have beautiful summers up here. Good riding weather
starts in early spring (no bugs)stays all through summer (except
for the days that are in the 90's, but then the evenings are
wonderful) (hardly any bugs)and then the glorious fall comes
along. Yes, our winters are coldbut the rest of the year makes up
for it.

There are hardier riders around than I am. One lady in our driving
club has a limit of -18 with no wind. If it goes below that, she
doesn't ride. Now that's bravery...

I must admit I DO have cabin fever right now, so pics of anything
green and warm are a welcome sight.

hahhaha. so true! but I was thinking when I saw Oprah the other day

people who let their horses starve. the woman who had Svertla

window shades because they are so thin and embarassing, I hate to have
people over anymore ??? Uh. hello? why not feed them and have
people over?? But instead she closed the curtains so she wouldnt have

horses entirely but for whatever reason she wouldnt let herself.
Maybe it would be admitting she was a failure at it? I dont know...
If i couldnt take care of mine I would find them good homes and just
give them away or sad to say... if I could not find good homes I would
have to put them down cause I could not bear the thought of them

constant pain. That would be a hard one. My friend sylvia is going

I can't say I would stay away just because I don't agree with how

do with any of the horse people in Kentucky, or probably most horse
people for that matter. I hear horrendous things (I think) all the
time, usually I try not to watch this stuff. I have now heard, and
witnessed more than one person putting full blinds on a horse (to
gain their trust), this is a hood with full plastic bubbles over the
eyes, instead of part like on driving blinds. Someone makes these
things, and it was explained to me that it makes the horse trust
you. People know how I am with my horses, I try to be an example, I
don't know what else to do. I can't stay away from all people who
have these kinds of ideas, which also include hard bits and spurs
and dominating the horse, they aren't really looking for better
ideas, I don't even know if they know where to look. Maybe it is the
same in Iceland for a lot of people. Some of the people who use
these things really do care for their horses, I am sure people can't
understand that, but I swear they just don't know better. A gentle
horsemanship is still rather rare out here, unless it is just
innate. In real life, I do try to be an example, I know it is clear
to everyone in real life, that I go slowly, hopefully over time they
will see the results of what really gaining trust gets you, and
having patience. Giving respect to the horse. Waiting for spring now.

There is nothing like getting out of the country for a while. I can't
say I would stay away just because I don't agree with how some things are

It's not that the horsemanship there is keeping me away so much as it
doesn't add any appeal as I set travel priorities. There are lots of places
on earth I'd like to see and I know I'll never see many of them. I'd love
to see the rainforests of Peru. I'd like to see some of the Far East. I'd
like to see more of the good old USA - Alaska particularly - and the Alps,
and I'd love to see the big animals of Africa (I don't count the hokey
safari at Disney World!) none of which I've seen. I don't have an
unlimited travel budget, and Iceland doesn't have enough appeal to me to top
the other places I mentioned. I never thought of visiting Iceland before I
got the horses. The horses put the country on the list for a while, but an
old connection between the country and my horses is not enough to keep
Iceland on my list, and the horsemanship there certainly doesn't attract me.

When I see all of the above, then maybe I'll think about visiting Iceland.
But not to see the horses particularly...

That's pretty funny, but you're right, not too surprising. If the people
are, then I think it's safe to assume that the horses are too. It really
amazes me to talk about breeding certain lines of Icelandic's, as if some
are royalty or something. (Meaning the horses, of course.) I still will
actively refrain from breeding closely related horses - ones with common
ancestors in the past few generations - but it just proves that there's a
limit to how elite certain lines can be compared to others. There's still
no justification for in-breeding to my way of thinking - even if you call it
line-breeding. Seems like we need to do whatever we can to keep what
existing diversity we have in the gene pool stirred up.

Has anyone else noticed that it's hard to find an Icelandic Horse who's NOT
related to one or more of the famous stallions?

Sorry I wasn't clear. I use EZ-ride type stirrups on all my saddles now,
with either Webbers or regular stirrups leathers.

When the Sensation leathers are replaced with Webbers or normal
leathers, do I just loop them around the top of the EZ Rides? I remember
you saying something about having to unscrew the bolts on the EZ Rides to
put regular leathers on?

Webbers are made to slide onto a safety stirrup bar on a treed saddle. The
Sensations (and about all the treeless saddles) have a closed ring, instead
of a bar, so you can't slide the Webbers on. So, what you can do instead is
turn the Webbers upside down if you use the EZ rides. Unbolt the top of the
EZ rides, and slide he Webber loop that normally slides onto the stirrup bar
through the bolt and replace the bolt. Then, slide the top part of the
webber that has the t-buckle through the stirrup loop on the saddle. I've
been riding in Sensations with my Webbers upside-down for over a year.

The newer EZ-rides have a fat slightly springy cover over the bolt that is
supposed to add still more shock absorption. The loop of the Webber won't
fit over that. What I tried this last time is sliding the bolt through a
piece of 1/2 (I think that's the size) plastic tubing (like they sell for
fish tank pumps - they carry it at Lowe's). The plastic tubing will fit
through the loop in the Webbers. This isn't necessary if you use normal
stirrup leathers.

If you want a cheap but effective thing to hold the extra piece of the
regular stirrup leathers (not Webbers) so that they don't flop in the
breeze, you can use a short piece of the Velcro One-Wrap. I love that
stuff - I get that at Lowe's too. (I'm sure Home Depot carries it too.)

Gee...I've been making saddle pad covers. Now I'm giving helpful hints on
stirrup riggings. I really don't care for Martha Stewart, but darned if
this e-mail didn't sound Marth-ish. And that's not a good thing...

You should use the grey high pressure outdoor PVC pipe, the other
stuff isn't strong enough and could shatter or break. I believe I
still have 6 or 8 sets of replacement tops that I could bring when we
ever get together. I don't think the pipe breaking is going to cause a
fall or anything like that since the bolt will hold, but it could
potentially injure the horse.

Canadian Trail House sells replacement tops for the EZ Rides. She sold
them so you could have one set of EZ Rides and use them for different
sized leathers.
