RE: [IceHorses] calling all redneck wannabees / Woman Gets DUI on horseback
In the hospital I worked in in Virginia, before we moved to Nevada, we had a diagnosis code for certain people who walked thru he ER: TSTL ... It stands for: to stupid to live Oh, that's funny. You ER folks have a humor all of your own, don't you? My mom was the first RN hired to be a dedicated ER nurse hired at the local hospital when it was first built. Oh, the stories she can tell! But, it sort of scarred my childhood - I couldn't ride my bike barefoot because of the toes she'd seen squished in bike tire spokes. And it's probably why I had to wait until I was 31 to get my first pony.Believe me, I'm still always careful to wear fresh underwear in good repair. :) I'm really impressed that you worked ER and still ride! Re: [IceHorses] HAPPY EASTER!
Beautiful. No snow here, but we broke the standing record for an April low temp - it was down to 21F here this morning. Ironically, the low was only 44 on Christmas morning. Some parts of the NC mountains had 10 of snow yesterday. Our normal high for this time of the year is about 70F. Yesterday, we hit about 48, and about 55 today. The azalea blooms are history, and we may even lose some of the plants themselves. Karen Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] Frankly, I think the weather is getting crazier all the time! We had lows between 18 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit last week after several days of over 80 degrees. All our blossoms froze - we probably won't get any apples this year. All the leaves of the yellow poplar leaves froze and the woods have turned brown again after having turned green the week before. The redbuds and dog wood blooms froze as well as my beautiful Quince bush. We have had this place for 30 years and this has never happened before. Very sad.I sure hope this won't happen next year when foals are due. I would have to bring the mares into her house! Anneliese
[IceHorses] The absurdity of high action or high stepping
From the Horsemanpro: The high stepping or the high action of the front legs in carriage horses and in riding horses was desired not by horsemen but by the non-horse public. To the public the high stepping horses with flexed, bowed necks represent some type of proud and elegant horse, and since it was so appealing to the public the royals and nobles adopted this in to parades and such. Needles to say that the artists adopted their art to the liking of the contemporary society, which is obvious from paintings and statues of a given era. Since many of the nobleman were not decent riders and could not ride the highly spirited horse, they invented a fake one. They simply invented a form of training that will make a horse look proud and high-spirited. In this modern age this is reflected very much in the present dressage, which is obvious in the preference in using the dull spirited warmbloods. This high stepping is not what Xenophon was writing about, but the high stepping infatuation has more or less its origins in the baroque generations. It is one thing if it is bred into the horse, and another if it is forced on or requested from a horse while not being a part of its nature. In both cases, from the horsemen perspective, it is absurd. It is like preferring a slower car before faster one while using more gas. In other words the high stepping horse is nothing else but a result of human vanity that is misusing and abusing horses just for the sake of appearance. Not just that the high stepping is impractical, but when taught instead of being inbred it becomes also a pure horse abuse. Horses will times look like they lift their legs up high, while in natural passage, but it only looks like this because the horse lifts its body well above the ground while in the air. Since most folks find this play of horses pretty they wish to imitate that while riding them. They completely ignore the fact that the horse does the natural passage primarily as a form of play, and needless to say it does not look like a play when presented by the dressage folks. The most preposterous high stepping can be seen in the so-called Spanish Walk, where the horse in each step picks its front leg up about 3 feet while advancing forward only several inches. It is like reversing the wheels on a tractor. Just imagine the absurdity of it, because that is what it is when it comes to the mechanics of the horse. This is usually taught via simple methods frequently practiced by the so-called masters of the riding art of the past, especially from the baroque era, which some fools call today the classical style. It is extremely simple, primitive and times even brutal. The horsemen of that day did this because it was required from them since it was in fashion and they were simply adjusting to simple economics of satisfying the demand. Hence the cause of this nonsense was in the interest of the non-horse public that fined this high stepping as some proud horse presentation. The military dressage of the past did not want their horse to step high, because it was not practical and lowered the horse's performance and durability. In simple the high action or the high stepping is nothing else but wasted energy for nothing but for appearance sake. Now just imagine how this contradicts the horse's nature since by nature the horse moves extremely economically reserving his energy for an emergency in a case of a needed flight. It simply contradicts the horse in all aspects; hence there is simply no harmony between the rider and the horse in any of the above-mentioned disciplines. We all do or did in the past stupid, absurd and unreasonable things in our lives, and the new generation does that as much as we've done it. Those who love horses need not believe anything in this article, but imagine just for a moment that it would became clear to you that you are abusing horses, how do you think you would feel? I know, there is no way that this is the truth, it cannot be, because you love horses.

[IceHorses] ...Spring
Karen, I can't believe how warm your nightime lows are. Did I actually read 60 degrees as the forecast for Friday ? We'll be lucky if it gets that warm Friday daytime. However, it's beautiful and sunny in Southern Oregon this morning, 46 degrees at 9:45. I need to remember to take a camera out on trail. We're riding on narrow single track trails through virtual gardens of wildflowers. Some days it's hard to believe it's real. Nancy

I can't believe how warm your nightime lows are. Did I actually read 60 degrees as the forecast for Friday ? We'll be lucky if it gets that warm Friday daytime. Yes, it's a little early in the year for the lows to be that high, but we've already had a few days where the lows were about 62-64F. That's why this past Sunday morning's low of 21F really hurt - we may actually lose some shrubs and trees from the shock. There will be no peaches in NC/SC this year, and probably not many apples. I'm not banking on getting any blueberries either. That was the all-time low reading for April in the Charlotte area. As the weather forecaster commented wryly, it was weather for a holiday - too bad the holiday was Easter, not Christmas! But, looks like we're bouncing back to more normal temps. I need to remember to take a camera out on trail. We're riding on narrow single track trails through virtual gardens of wildflowers. Some days it's hard to believe it's real. [IceHorses] UK consumers told to boycott Icelandic fish
UK consumers told to boycott Icelandic fish UK-based Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society is encouraging British consumers and UK supermarkets to boycott Icelandic fish products sold by companies involved in whaling in one way or the other. According to a statement* on the organization's website, Icelandic fish product manufacturer Grandi hf. cooperates with whaling company Hvalur hf. on storing minke whale meat. Visir.is reports. Therefore the organization encourages consumers in the UK to boycott Grandi's products. The UK is considered an important market for Grandi, as about 20 percent of its export profits are made from sale of fish products in the UK. According to the statement from Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, over 80 percent of Brits are against whaling. * http://www.wdcs.org/dan/publishing.nsf/allweb/E2634302DED60515802572B3002F8510 ___ Judy http://icehorses.net http://clickryder.com

[IceHorses] Having Feel with Horses
I found this very interesting post on Horsecity.com... Trish For a very long time, I have spoken of a special thing that it seems to me some horsepersons have- a feeling. I guess one can have it in varying degrees, because I usually have it, but when I have been working a lot with a horse, I get more and more cerebral, and lose it..and have to take a day or two off to relax. When I come back I can find it again. I developed it a lot with the first guy I asked to teach me, because I watched his approach to horses and saw that he had it- and I wanted it to rub off on me. I struggle to put it into words, because I have found it hard to explain to someone else. Like when trying to teach a friend how to ride, and how to do that gentle sort of play with fingers , that is a give and take subtle discussion with the horse. It is exactly what you do on foot with the horse, and is the instinctual feeling that ends up giving you the immediate responses to movements- like I mentioned in another thread, when I bit the cheek of a horse that rudely put his head in my face. It sounds wierd, but the horse understood, he stayed out of my face, and he didn't seem inappropriately offended! In other words, I find it hard to describe because it just is something that the conscious mind doesn't control. It finally came to me today what it is! I actually came to it by thinking about the people I know who have it, and what they have in common, personality wise! It is mirroring. It is the natural tendancy to mirror others, that animals do, and we do too, especially as babies. If you retain this characteristic strongly, it does pose some problems in life- though it helps in horsemanship. The friends I know who have this thing are like me in that we are highly influencable on subtle levels. All of us stay out of social movements and trends, on the exterior being independant, but when faced physically with another, we soak up their traits and emotions. I start to pick up their accents and gestures within minutes, I get into their ideas and dreams, see things their way, feel things their way. I have found myself feeling strongly attracted to men, but when away from them realize I find them unattractive and not at all a person I would like to be with. It took me years to figure out that I was just feeling their attraction for me. When I was younger, and during the first years of my marriage, I simply kept myself away from the presence of other men unless accompanied by my husband because of this problem! The friends I am thinking of all have a problem with fidelity. The guy who first trained me is 40 years old and still single, and constantly jumping from one girlfriend to the next. He is always starting one relationship while still involved in another and claiming he feels terrible about it and can't help himself. It's amazing. Like many of the girls I know who have this, he has trouble saying no, and is known as the sweetest person around, ready to do anything he can to help othersand yet is totally unreliable, getting himself into situations he didn't realize he didn't want until after committing himself- so he has to make excuses and stuff to get out later. Anyway..I am just using him as an example. I have many of the same problems, though it kinda seems like my effort to overcome them has been more fruitful, probably just due to my admitting they ARE problems! (which these other people haven't). This guy also has kept to breaking horses- he seduces them, and then they go off to their owners- he has three horses of his own which he broke and never did work with again. Just like relationships with women, deepening and developing those relationships would require having to tame that sensitivity and learn to master it- I think that is what has helped me learn to harness in my own a bit better (be loyal to my husband, to myself, say no at times, have a different opinion, leave others their feelings for themself.). I have one girlfriend with this same quality, who has made some good progress at dealing with it, though she just stays out of any relationships, and only rides in an arena -isolation is her present answer, as mine once was. It is this empathy, mirroring, that makes me step towards my horse without thinking almost at the same time she takes a step towards me, or my hand flies out in the direction of her nose if she has it fly out towards me, even if I am looking away and am not totally conscious she did it. It is the subtle play that happens when I release pressure on the reins as she releases pressure on the bit, and put it back on if she pushes it, all this within a two second period, and without my thinking about it. In less subtle ways it is the very quick reaction your body does towards a horse if it does such a threatening movement towards you- making the message clear to him way before he carries it any further. You just are doing
