are shut into a foxproof wooden house at night.

If you only have a few, just a small area is fine as a run for them -

Hate crimes happen everywhere - motivated by race, religion, nationality,
sexual orientation... wouldn't we have to consider all the terrorist
suicide bombing reported to be hate crimes? I can't remember ever hearing
of one in my small community either, Mic, and there are interracial couples
here too. After hearing the state of KY blasted for racism last night,
which triggered Mary's question about in the state, just on a hunch, I did
some searches for statistics on hate crimes in the USA. The FBI sites shows
the number of hate crime incidents per year on
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/hc2006/incidents.html and specifically per state on
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/hc2006/table12.html I would expect there to be some
diversity across the country in how these are reported, but interestingly
enough, the top 15 states with the HIGHEST per capita reporting of hate
crimes for 2006 are (in order): South Dakota, District of Columbia, New
Jersey, Michigan, Massachusetts, Delaware, Kansas, Nevada, Virginia, Maine,
Arkansas, Oregon. Nebraska, Maryland, Connecticut and California.

The fifteen states with the LOWEST per capita reported incidents of hate
crimes in 2006 are, in order: Mississippi, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Iowa,
Louisiana, Wyoming, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, Utah, Indiana,
Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Idaho. Kentucky was just behind Idaho, at 17th.

The numbers are low, so trying to put a per capita ranking on these crimes
is really pretty meaningless, but hate crimes were reported in 2006 in every
state except Mississippi. If anyone can find a geographical pattern to
these numbers re: state ranking, I'd like to know what it is, because I sure
can't see a pattern. For instance, NC is low, but Virginia is high?
Wyoming and Idaho are low, but South Dakota is high? Arkansas is high, but
Louisiana is low? There are high and low incident rates in neighboring
states across this country. Go figure... Interesting that three states with
the highest incidents per capita of hate crimes are Maine, Connecticut and
Massachusetts, since much of the country perceives New England as liberal...
but I guess that just shows that no part of the country is immune from hate.

Mary, I don't think I'd be any more worried living in KY than in
California...but it only takes one nutcase to endanger any of us, no matter
where we are. (Note that despite the infamous Oklahoma City bombing by
white-supremacist-terrorist Timothy McVeigh, OK had lower than average
number of hate crimes reported.)

particular would be very wary...

A good friend of mine who lives around Kansas City took me farm shopping out

ready to show me, but she simply told him 'no'. When I asked her later on
why, she said that they 'definitely not the community for me'. The next

when I lived in california many years, I was often surprised how some
small towns, and even some large ones like bakersfield, had such a
western influence. Because of all the Oklahoma and Arkansas dust
bowl immigrants settling there. They seemed so southern to me and I
felt very comfortable there with the country and very much
southern feel. Towns like Elk Grove, Sacramento, Lodi, Stockton,
are very agricultural and country with lots of people walking around
in cowboy boots and hats. I loved it there.

I grew up and live now in the most redneck part of florida and to me,
the diversity here is ok, I dont ever hear the N word and there is
lots of different cultures living here that everyone seems ok with,
vietnamese and hispanic, and everything else really. But the thing I
cant stand is the extreme Christian RIGHT. I have seen people lose
their jobs because they were the wrong religion. I have been in
government department head meetings where I had to sit and listen
about THE LORD and how BLESSED we all were for over an hour. I would
just get so tired of it. Not because I'm not christian, but because I
believe every religion deserves respect and I would see people hurt by
it, like one person, a Quaker, she did not pledge allegiance to the
flag, they pratically persecuted her for it. That was so wrong. But
aside from that, there is hate stuff everywhere, and what I do, I let
it begin with me. If there is someone at work or wherever that people
seem to be intolerant of, I try to be tolerant and open about it. I
personally love the Southern culture and way of life, and most old
timers here are so laid back and gentle about everything it would not
occur to them to hate someone for what they are.

open mouths...I don't see it as the same thing as the photos with the horses
with tight
nosebands and the reins applying many pounds of pressure to the horse's

Exactly...the obsession with having the mouth closed is probably why all these
nosebands developed in the 1st placewhen in reality sometimes the horses
just want to naturally open their mouth and there is no negative reason they
are doing it, but people started saying it was bad in ANY instance. I see the
same thing about the western peanut pushers- that all started with people
saying if your horse's head is up he is not relaxed...well guess what? That is
sometimes true and sometimes NOT...a horse can be curious or interested and
have his head above his wither and still be relaxed and happy. I don't want to

The Icelandic looks SO nasty! Ears pinned, tail lashing yes, he's
well trained, but he doesn't look one bit happy.

My guess is that he added the Icelandic to his regular routine specifically
for this show, so the horse probably hadn't had much training.

i use a french-link full-cheek snaffle. i don't use a noseband that
comes anywhere near stjarni's mouth, and he opens it sometimes, so i'm
pretty sure that's not doing much :) i *think* it's 4 and 3/4 and the
mouth is one of those coppery-looking alloy types.

stjarni is -- i should say, has become since i got him -- a horse who
really loves being massaged. this includes my massaging his gums and
tongue and lips and palate. i've done this with and without his bit in
his mouth, and have found no particular pressure points or sore spots,
and he seems comfortable either way. (his favorite spot is the gums in
the back of the jaw, far behind the bit.) so i think it fits him.

at one point though my crownpiece/cheekpiece arrangement seemed to stretch
a bit, and the bit contacted one of his wolf teeth, and that made him cranky;
i fixed it by going up one notch on the buckle. so as with any other
tack i'd suggest rechecking fit now and again, esp. if the honey seems
unhappy in any way.

Taking the wolfteeth out was my first thought as well, but when I kept
reading and saw that the problem was solved by raising the bit I bet she
meant canine teeth, not wolfteeth. The wolfteeth are really small and tucked
right against the molars. The visible ones that are usually by themselves
halfway between the molars and incisors are canine teeth.

Our boys all had their wolf teeth pulled as they were being gelded. I
had Gusti and Peppy's teeth looked at this past fall. Gusti had a
small ulcer starting. I knew something was wrong because he was so
fussy about his mouth. But the vets were surprised he was reacting at
all because the ulcer was so small. So I'll have to remember
thatGusti will fuss almost immediately when something isn't right.

Dagur and Solon are next on the list. I will have them checked in the

In the meantime she's exposing us to some culture by discussing why
her church feels it necessary to dress like Mr. Peanut.

Truth be told...I really don't know what Janice is up to most of the time.

mr peanut is an icon, a true son of the South. A lot of people think
he is a fictional character but he was a real man. he wore spats and
carried a cane and wore a top hat. his mothers maiden name was Le
Gume. She was french. In 1890 Mr. peanut was attending classes at
Tuskeegee Institute in Alabama and happened to be in a class taught by
a professor named george Washington Carver who could care less about
peanuts at the time but was so mightily impressed by his gifted young
student that he actually became obsessed and started stalking him and
in a weak and pitiable effort at impressing his young almost protege,
he began to come up with all sorts of employment opportunities for Mr.
peanut upn graduation. Thus we now have peanut butter and peanut oil
and peanut jelly beans and even a national Peanut festival held every
year not 30 miles from my house. Ironically the thing most crowded at
the national peanut festival every year is the corn dog booth.

 Thanks,

Hi Dorothy, and welcome to the list. Was it you who asked about the
durability of the Sensations on the treeless list? I got my first one
about four years ago I think it was, and they've become our favorites. All
of my horses do well in them - doesn't mean that EVERY Icelandic will do
well with them, but a lot do. I sold my first couple to upgrade to newer
models, but they seem to hold up well. And, they have a neat modular
design - you can replace the felt inner panels or the seats independently,
should you ever have any wear and you sure can't do that with many saddles.
We currently have five - two Hybrids, one dressage and one English trail.
I've never met a Sensation that I didn't like. :)

Re: [IceHorses] Bits

2007-12-11 Thread Karen Thomas
For those who use bits with their IceHorses, which bit do you use,
which bits seem to fit the interior structure of the Icelandic's
mouth (without relying on a noseband to keep the mouth closed).

We use a lot of double-jointed snaffles too, some with French link centers,
and some with the peanut/oval middles. Melnir likes the three-piece Happy
Mouths, but I mostly use stainless steel. I also have one of the
mullen-mouth snaffles like the picture Wanda sent in - that's often the
first bit we put in a horse's mouth. I also have a couple of mullen or
low-port Kimberwickes, and some short-shanked mullen mouth Pelhams, but at
the moment, I'm not using a Kimberwicke or Pelham on anyone. Saga seems to
do better in a sidepull, but she's not too picky. I don't think the
side-rings make too much difference - except that the full-cheeks can be
weapon if your horse moves quickly, so they aren't my favorites. I guess I
prefer d-ring or eggbutt bits, since they aren't as easy to pull through a
horse's mouth during early flexing/bending training as is a loose-ring. (Of
course, we try to teach the flexing/bending stuff first from the ground with
a halter, so I don't really think that's a big deal. Plus you can always
use a chin strap with a loose ring.)

I also have several nasty bits that came with some of my first horses, as
well as some bits I've bought in lots on ebay over the years. Sometimes
bits look better in the catalogs than they do in person.

I never use nosebands, but I'm a big fan of the halter/sidepull/bridle
combinations, like the Moss Rock Freedom bridle and the Nicker's Saddlery
Harmony Bridle. I like the convenience of being able to switch to a halter
or sidepull while I'm out on the trail if a reason comes up. I have a thing
about not leading a horse by the bit, so even if the bit is still in the
horse's mouth and I have to get off, I move the rein snap to the halter
ring.

Anyway, I tend to be very much a less is more type when it comes to tack,
especially bits.

I should send you a couple of other Tom Jones clips I saw on YouTube when I

Wolfteeth are usually the size of a human's babytooth, so yes, they
 usually
pop out quite easily, unless they have been damaged by the bit, which
happens quite often. We always have them taken out before the horse ever
 carries a bit.

Bantam, rooster is about right, but I can see how people might get
enthusiastic - the tune is catchy, kinda groovy. But give me Joseph Schmidt

George Washington Carver of the Tuskegee Institute came up with 489
things to do with a peanut, you know. He was african american and
from alabama and was/is/much revered in the south. His peanut science
helped the south transition from cotton to peanuts after the boll
weevil destroyed the cotton crops (and the economy with it).
Enterprise alabama is the only place in the world with a monument in
the town center that is a statue of a giant boll weevil. It is their
tribute and thanks to an insect that wiped them out and in doing so,
sorta forced them to switch to peanut growing, which made them a boom
town economically. I aint making any of this up, you can google it if
you dont believe me! I will take a picture of the boll weevil
monument next time i go thru there and post it if you dont believe it.
And horses love peanuts, shelll and all. George washington carver
even made textile cloth out of peanut hulls.

Hi

I use a Myler. It is a snaffle with two joints that operate independantly
of one another (so if you pick up the right rein, the left side of the mouth
doesn't feel it (much). The mouth piece is sweet iron with copper inlay.
The mouth piece has a slight curve to offer some tongue relief but not so
much that it pushes on the roof of her mouth. D ring (I don't like loose
ring snaffles as they often pinch the corners of the horse's mouth - have
never had one but have seen it happen too many times in other peoples'
horses mouths). Drifa seems quite happy with it.

P.S, I don't use a noseband. If I did, I would use a cavesson and not a
dropped nose band. In my opinion, it is too easy to get the dropped
noseband too tight and thus prevent them from relaxing their jaws and
opening their mouths, and also cut off some of their nostril flaring
capacity. I want my horse to ba able to open her mouth if I am getting too
heavy handed - useful feedback for me.
