Sylvia My good friend has an Astund, it is VERY comfortable, and fits mosts Icelandics that we have tried it on.I have the other model, and it seems a bit long, but I have a BIG 14 hand gelding that it fits like a glove, so you need a horse that does not have a short back to use it IMO. One thing I do not like about it is the flaps are long and get in my way when I cinch the girth.but they provide a lot of smooth protection as well Sally is using the Benni harmony with a flexible tree, and the horses really love it.it seems designed well The Astund is a very secure seat BTW, at least the model my friend has, I could ask her which model. It is a costly saddle, but hers is in better condition very used than a lot of new saddles, very well made. Skye Fire Island Eco-Treks-808-443-6085 Fire Island Professional Farrier Service-640-6080

[IceHorses] saddles
Hi, I have been riding my gelding on trail now that he is getting broke to ride around. Last time I used an Icelandic saddle and it hurt my butt. Fits him. This week I used my treeless saddle and it swims around on him now that he is loosing weight and getting fit. I was looking at a Hnakkvirki and a Astund Faxi both very used but still pretty expensive. Has anyone ridden in this type of saddle, either one of them. I might want a saddle with a tree. I am in a real dilemma over this. Sylvia **See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop000304)

Hi Karen, >>I don't know if anyone has ever noticed, but horses always look fluffier when it's really cold. I've never known if it's static from the cold that makes the coats fluff up, or if they fluff them up to add insulating value. That's true with non-Icelandic's as much as with Icelandic's. Yes horses definitely fluff up the colder it is. I do think it is the insulating factor. Means people in cold climates really have to feel their horses sides because they look really fat and be quite thin. I have bought a few foals that had not been fed well and they had really long hair - but were really thin underneath. I also find that there are two main types of coats with Icelandics regardless of where they live. Some grow a long coat and some have shorter but a really dense coat. Falki's seems to have gotten denser >>> in the past 2 months that he's been here. I don't really think that horses here have longer hair as a rule. We have some range in the coat lengths. Saga has a short-ish coat too, at least as Icelandic's go - and she's Gloi's full sister. Flekka, Isak's mom, has a long coat, much like Isak's. Trausti is a cousin of Flekka's and his coat is much like theirs. Loftur is really wooly too - but as far as I know, he has no close relatives here. Ima, Angie and Bjola have shorter coats than Isak's family - and they are closely related. I think the biggest difference is genetic, and varies from family to family. Sina was my first Icelandic, and I thought she was really hairy that first winter - but now I see she's nowhere nearly has hairy as the Flekka/Trausti/Isak family. BTW, all of my horses are woollier - longer and denser - than they were when you took Falki home too. You can barely see the clip marks on their coats and I'd just clipped them before the clinic. The coats seem to keep growing until into December. I don't know if anyone has ever noticed, but horses always look fluffier when it's really cold. Falki's seems to have gotten denser in the past 2 months that he's been here. Maybe in warmer temps the longer coat helps to 'drain' or direct the rain off the horse's back and the less dense coat would allow better comfort for warmer temps. The shorter denser hair may be better for insulation from the snow sitting on their back and the colder temps. [IceHorses] Pay It Forward for 2008
>From Pay It Forward: Start a revolution--it begins with you! The premise of the novel Pay It Forward is one that any person can implement in his or her own life, at any time. It begins with doing a favor for another person -- without any expectation of being paid back. Indeed one would request that the recipient of that favor do the same for someone else: ideally for three other people. The unconditional favors can be large or small. As Trevor observes: it doesn't have to be a big thing. It can just seem that way, depending on whom you do it for. Trevor's concept of "paying it forward" comes from an extra credit assignment given to him in school. His teacher asks the students to "Think of an idea for world change, and put it into action." The Lone Ranger Creed I believe that to have a friend, a man must be one. That all men are created equal and that everyone has within himself the power to make this a better world. I've wondered if the boys grow later though, like human boys do? Actually, I'm kind of surprised that my babies are all this big. Three of the four moms are right on 13H, and Melnir is only about 13.1H. It's pretty amazing to me that three of the babies are already as tall as their parents. [IceHorses] Busy day - Runa's first ride; Angie's first trim
We had a very busy, but fun day here. Runa got to do her first pony ride, and it was a non-event. She was totally cool with it, like she'd done it all her life. I led Shirley for maybe 5 minutes, and that was enough for today. Since I was leading and Cary wasn't around, there are no pictures. Then, the farrier came, and he gave most of the horses their trims. Angie got her first trim here. It seemed to surprise her to see all the stalls full of horses - usually it's just her and one or two others when she comes in. Today, though, there was a full house, and then she'd never seen the farrier here. She reverted slightly to her original wide-eyed look of concern, but she didn't jump or startle even once. Cary led her on the lead line in the aisle while Marcus trimmed Loftur (who, ironically, was my wide-eyed rehab three and a half years ago, but is now cool as a cucumber) and then she had her turn. It was almost like she was relieved to see that was all that was up, because once he started trimming, she looked more relaxed and business-like. All in all, I was very proud of her. We've had rain this week (remind me not to whine, since we've had such a drought), and it's supposed to rain again tomorrow. Hopefully, I can get some pics of Runa under saddle soon. RE: [IceHorses] another young horse
Hi Annie, >>I am interested to know what Njorthur has on his head and how it works. Njorthur is wearing a type of sidepull. This is the same basic style as the one Kaaren Jordan's husband makes - he copied the design (with our blessing) that Linda had made & the kind we sell. This one was made in Germany and the nosepiece is leather but rolled leather rather than flat leather. The nosepiece is quite shaped and fits like a halter and the nosepiece doesn't have to be done up tightly because the jowl strap keeps the nose from sliding. The rings are set farther forward than a halter which gives a clear signal from the side for the horse to turn. We start all our young horses in them. Liz Graves also makes one that some people on the list use. >>She has a whip in her left hand. How is she using that? She uses it to just touch the horse on the shoulder or hindquarters - to move forward or to bring it forward and touch him on the chest to stop. The idea is just to give more than one signal and one that can then be used from the horse's back. She will also use it in her right hand from the left side. The horses are not, and must not be, afraid of the whip the way we use it. Robyn Icelandic Horse Farm Robyn Hood & Phil Pretty Vernon BC Canada www.icefarm.com

Nancy: I have at least 20 Icelandic riders I have sold Sensations to in the past 2 years that are close to your weight. Many ride longer distances. With appropriate padding, they seem to do quite well. If you want to contact me off list perhaps a few of them would be willing to speak with you about their experiences. I know Susan Cooper rides her TWH in a Sensation /is about your weight & does distance riding as well. Maybe she can weigh in on her experiences. I too was skeptical about "treeless", but the Sensation really does offer better weight distribution because of the interior construction & multi point rigging that most other treeless saddles & believe me, I have tried them all both with myself & my group of 30 riders out here. There are even several equine chiropractors that rec. the Sensation for appropriately built horses with riders under 200lbs. Kaaren
[IceHorses] books a million
today at books a million i was browsing and came back to the coffee area to find my husband reading one of those ENcyclopedia of the Horse or Horse Encyclopedia books, you know the kind, there are millions I think, all of them so bland and generic. But he was reading the part about icelandics and going wow, hmm, gosh why didnt they mention any of this in that horse illustrated article, all it had was the same old same ol junk they all say but this one... and he let me look at it and I was amazed. It talked about how some horses were bred in certain areas for meat, for racing, for show, for draft. It named studs that are allowed to roam free and breed for draft. And that these are where the very heavy cannon bone icelandics are generally from, actually named the geographic areas. actually named studs used to breed for draft cannon bone density, for race, for meat. Then it said they only come in certain colors, didnt even name SD which was interesting and said "chestnut with flaxen mane very rarely have manes and tails as dark as the body color it is always much lighter". stuff like that that i have NEVER heard. About gait it seemed to stress the four gaits as the three usual and PACE and THEN said "some have an extra gait, the tolt, which is what they call a rack in the US." verry interesting!! I almost wanted to contact the book and find out who wrote the article because it very obviously came from a different source than the ones who have been contributing to icelandic articles for the last ten years at least. oh! It said they are never over 14.2 hh. NEVER. it said. usually 12.2 to 14 it said. and for a pic it had a horse looked exactly like Tivar, who donny has started calling "Digger" since he has made a new hole about four feet deep by his water trough. DOnny said "if I was nasi I would be nervous if my paddock mate started digging a hole that big, its almost a nasi size hole." and i was think maybe teev is a HOLER graduate ar ar. anyway. I couldnt buy the book it was forty bucks. but it was refreshing. it seemed to have originated with input from breeders in iceland and not people here where for some reason some sort of erroneous info culture started and took hold i think Janice -- yipie tie yie yo

I really need to anti up and buy a saddle for the Icelandics, but am really struggling with input that is poles apart. I ride longer (up to 30 miles) distances and I weigh 160 lbs. I'm worried about the treeless saddles. My favorites have been a Steubben Siegfied and the current Tucker endurance equitation. The Siegfried actually fits the Icelandics pretty well, but it is ancient and I wouldn't trust the tree anymore - it's been in a few wrecks. My own tree isn't in much better shape since in most cases, I was in the same wrecks. The Tucker is too long and probably will not be wide enough. Nancy

>>> My only concern is that I have heard that she really doesn't like treeless saddles - was that any problem Karen??? Not at all! I remember when someone falsely reported that to the list, and it's not true. Liz is passionate that tack fit the horses and be appropriate to the horse and to the rider...but beyond that, she really isn't particular about what kind of saddle you prefer - western or English, treed or treeless. And she's certainly not a snob - if you have an inexpensive saddle that works, that's fine too. I could see her questioning some particular treeless saddle on some particular rider, or maybe on some particular horse, but she'd be equally cautious about a poorly fitting treed saddle. Basically though, at the clinics I've been too, she quickly discusses saddle fit, but she wouldn't necessarily even look at the saddle (or the bit) unless she could see that something was wrong with the horse. I've heard her say outright at least a couple of times that treeless saddles may sometimes be about the only answer for some really wide, short-backed Icelandic's. She's pretty sold on Sensations. I know she's seen plenty of Sensations too - four or five of the horses at each of the clinics she's done for me have been ridden in them. Even big old Cary rode one on Skjoni... Her comment about Skjoni and Cary is that they are a happy pair, and Skjoni has a good bit of "self-carriage" at gait, so you can't argue with results like that. (Cary is still gloating over that comment.) >>> Also how much riding is involved? Do all participants ride once a day? I'd feel sure that might be up to the clinician and the host to decide, but generally, her formats are such that they are split between lecture, demonstrations and riding, so neither you or your horse have to be in tip-top shape to ride in one. I definitely remember hearing these stories over the past few years, mainly news type shows, 20/20, 60 minutes. One of the things in particular they were doing is making toy/statues of dogs, cats etc. and using cat and dog fur. I'm not sure that this was only china, but mexico and other countries. I do remember them talking about faux fur on coats sometimes not being fake. When buying coats etc. I do try to stay away from fur looking trim or lining because I don't want to look like I am wearing fur and I'll never be sure that it isn't some type of animal fur. When I was looking at some coats last week the fur trim on a hood was shedding like real fur, but didn't look to see what it was listed as. It was a down type coat on sale for $50 at Macy. Passed it by. I'll buy leather and suede, but not fur. It's amazing to me how so many people have no clue about puppy mills. My educated brother in law who did get his Shiz Tsu from the pound was telling me that I could get pure bred dogs like Yorkies from the Amish for about $125. The Amish had just built his garage. RE: [IceHorses] Lip Measurement
I absolutely love the look of the Myler. So far, none of my horses has agreed. I know they got a lot of publicity for a while, so I thought my horses must be odd that none seemed especially enamored of them. Finally, though I am able to use this bit I've had for a long time for Runa. I have never really seen anything wrong with them, but MOST of my horses seemed just as happy, or even happier, with a plain ol' stainless steel d-ring French link that most tack stores carry for half the price of the Mylers. I first tried a d-ring French link on Sina, who has a very small (narrow) mouth. I got it simply because it was the mildest bit I could find in the pony section of the local tack store in the 4.25" that she needs. I still use that bit for her. I will warn people though - be careful before you introduce any horse to a Happy Mouth bit - a few seem to become attached to them, and don't want anything else...not a problem really, except that the soft mouth pieces of the Happy Mouths mean they usually have to be replaced every year or two - or more often, if you have a horse with an oral fixation. Eitill came here with his Happy Mouth addiction in place, and he had to have a couple of replacements in the two years I had him. Without thinking, I offered his bit to Melnir one day...and Melnir became immediately addicted too. Oh well, I can think of worse things to happen to a horse. :) When I use the Happy Mouths, I buy the ones with the three-piece mouths. The Myler snaffles certainly seem benign, but they do make some pretty nasty-looking bits too. Karen Thomas, NC No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. I had almost exactly the same experience - my first Boa Gilbert was a sweetie, very affectionate, he would curl up with me wherever I went and actually really liked the cats and the one-winged road casualty tawny owl I had at the time. Then the next one I had was satan spawn, really evil. He had to be fed with tongs or he would bite me every time, yet he loved men. Snakes can be weird.
