We had originally planned to set stalls up in our big garage but hubby has decided to use it for his tractor and work materials/machinery, so that left the option of building a run-in or using the 'barn'we finally decided upon fencing in the barn with an attached pen and using the structure as a huge run-in until we're ready to close it in.. Re: [IceHorses] Liablity...
It says it doesn't cover people who breed, board, train or give lessons. We don't board, train (except our own) and I don't give lessons, but I suppose that breeding even a few foals every few years disqualifies us. Do you know, Laree? It is my understanding that if you are engaging in an activity that would be termed a business activity - such as teaching a lesson, then you are not covered during that lesson time but if you are on a trail ride, riding your own horse and a friend is also riding one of your horses (not paying you a fee for it) and that friend gets injured, then you are covered. I will get clarification for you... I think the breeding issue comes into it if you are earning your living breeding horses - not just doing a little hobby breeding - which you would described as doing. -- Laree in NC Doppa Mura Simon, Sadie and Sam (the S gang) Yet when all the books have been read and reread, it boils down to the horse, his human companion, and what goes on between them. - William Farley

http://www.amazon.com/Whisper-This-your-horse-yourself/dp/0979144604 Did you think you would like this book? No, that's why I said this is a different book... altho I probably should have highlighted different. Yes, he is Buck's brother. Here is an excerpt from Buck's book, Faraway Horses: The Faraway Horses By Buck Brannaman with William Reynolds FOREWORD http://www.dailylit.com/books/faraway-horses/foreword INTRODUCTION THE STORIES IN THIS BOOK are scenes from the private movie of my life. They have helped me understand the big picture, and they have influenced directions I've taken since the events happened. In many ways they have affected the way I work with certain horses. I know they have influenced me in the way I deal with people, but horses have always meant a certain level of consistency in my life. They respond with all their being. All they know is honesty. On my way to a horsemanship clinic I was putting on in Ellensburg, Washington, I decided to make a little detour through Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. It's a peaceful town, and its beauty is magnetic. I can see why so many people have come here to retire. I sat looking out my truck window, with my horses standing quietly in my trailer, at the old house at 3219 North Fourth Street. That's where my older brother, Smokie, and I lived with our mom and dad for a few years in the mid-1960s. Seeing it more than thirty years later brought back a flood of memories. The shed, not much more than an overhang to the back of the house, made me think of milking cows there, and how, in the eyes of a kid just four feet tall, that pitiful little shed seemed like a huge barn. When I saw the basement window, I remembered struggling to drag a hose through it so I could water our horses, cows, and pigs, and how more often than not that hose would hang up at the hose joint a few feet short of the stock tank. The yard was where Smokie and I learned to ride and spin a rope, little knowing we would soon be performing on TV and at rodeos and fairs around the country as The Idaho Cowboys, Buckshot and Smokie, from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The number on that beat-up old mailbox stared back at me: 3219. I was tempted to knock on the door to see who lives there, and maybe walk around a little. So many memories. So many times the ambulance would arrive at the house to collect my mom because she was having a diabetic reaction. And so many times our neighbors would call the sheriff because old man Brannaman was working his kids over again. But today, I'm no longer afraid, not even of the memories. In a strange, almost melancholic way, it felt good to be here. Who would have thought that one of those Idaho Cowboys would grow up and have the joy of working with so many people and their horses, trying to help create relationships based on trust? It's ironic. Trust was something I had in short supply as a youngster. Ride with me now, and I'll tell you some of what's happened along the way. It's been kind of bumpy, but well worth the trip. Things are so good for me now due, in large part, to my wife, Mary. It is to her, to my family, and to the Horse that I dedicate not only this book, but my life. Thank you for your interest, and may your life be filled with good horses. Buck Brannaman

Re: [IceHorses] Whisper This - The Faraway Horses
No, that's why I said this is a different book... altho I probably should have highlighted different. Yes, he is Buck's brother. Here is an excerpt from Buck's book, Faraway Horses: I have that book, The Faraway Horses, by Buck Branaman and I have never been so disappointed in a book. I bought the book to see how Buck trains horses, since I'd heard so much about him - not to read about his sad life, and to read about the famous and semi-famous names he can drop. You know, maybe his sad life (yeah, right, like the tragic end of his marriage that left him free to marry an ex-model...sigh...poor guy, how DOES he cope) might have been vaguely interesting as a sidenote to his training methods, but the first part of the book is all about his problems in his early life. That was about as interesting to me as I'm sure most people would find MY autobiography. The book just rankled me, because I got the feeling Buck was setting himself up to be the poor sensitive-but-macho cowboy that would be SO appealing to the moneyed women who can afford his riding clinics. Maybe his clinics would be ok, but after reading that book, going to one of his clinics just doesn't appeal to me, especially since the clinics he's done in this area have been about ranch ropin', cattle workin' and colt startin'. Sorry, but I don't have a real need to learn ranch ropin' here in encroachin' suburbia... :) I just went and read this page on Smokie's website, http://www.smokiebrannaman.com/SmokeBook.htm and I'm still laughing. Here's a quote: Does that make me an expert on horses or horsemanship? No it doesn’t. It also doesn’t make me a psychologist able to fix your marriage, or your life problems, while I fix your horses problems at a three-day clinic. ... I have done some little clinics here and there for my friends, mostly for free or cold beer, just because I like to help people with their horses and I enjoy it. And I’ve never tried to make a living at it. Mostly because I have a real problem with being able to feed a line of “Bull$#t” to a bunch of people knowing that they will never get it, and yet still taking their hard earned money. And believing that I am the one and only horseman in the world who can fix your horse, teach you what you need to know, or help you enjoy your horse more, just because you pay me to tell you that. Now I’m not saying that the wisdom these people sell is not good knowledge. Today’s clinicians who subscribe to natural horsemanship, the vaquero methods or any of the other topics you care to mention are all very useful to you and me. I use a lot of it in working with horses as well. And I have learned something from all of them. I’ll repeat that, all of them. (More on that topic later) So, now that you know that I’m just a guy who might be able to give you some insight on enjoying your horse experience a little more and give you some straight talking “No Bull$#t” advise without paying a ton of money, read on. Not sure I'll buy his Whisper This book, but it couldn't be more disappointing than his brother's book was to me - and I think I might like Smokie's direct style better. :) Karen Thomas, NC, wondering why does no one every have a filly startin' clinic...? ;)

Don't let it bother you Lorraine. Even if he really truly has NO intermediate gait and never will, many people (me included) love a horse with a nice trot. We had a visitor this Spring who chose her Icelandic expressly because he was inclined to trot. She wanted to do dressage. Nancy

[IceHorses] patches
I thought I had seen all the Patches videos but this one was a new one for me. I have tried and tried to find out where this horse lived (he passed away now) because I know it had to be near me since it is in the florida panhandle. from things I see in the video I think it is near a freeway, drive up windows etc., and by the moss etc it looks like it might be near Live oak lake City area, but actually could be anywhere near me... but I liked this video because the old redneck men are just like they really are around here, they talk with the same accent, etc., seems like two good ol boys retired with nothing better to do than play with their horse all day and the horse seems very happy :) He died as I said earlier, but left an offspring they named Chip as in chip off the old block. anyway, here is a good Patches video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJNHNTs7Gbs Janice -- even good horses have bad days sometimes.

and no helmet. Florida just passed a horse helmet law last week, the first ever. But its only for kids 16 and under, and exempt in rodeos and horse shows!! What are they thinking?!?! Every day on the news they've been reporting on it showing people kicked in the head in rodeos and horse shows and saying how its exempt there. why even BOTHER good grief! I am so mad I could spit. We had a visitor this Spring who chose her Icelandic expressly because he was inclined to trot. She wanted to do dressage. And I'll confess: I've done everything I can possibly do to TRY to breed for Icelandic's with strong natural gait, and I believe we're getting it in our foals. But you know, just for ME, for MY riding, breeder-duties aside, I'd love to have a three-gaited Icelandic. Seriously. One I could just trot and trot and trot on...and never worry about gaiting. Trotting is such good aerobic exercise (for the humans) and a great thigh builder. Yet who is my favorite riding horse? Sina - with whom it's almost impossible to get enough suspension to her trot (which actually stays slightly foxtrotty) to manage to post to. Karen Thomas, NC

Re: [IceHorses] another new foal
There are plenty of duns among the less improved British native ponies, especially the Highlands and Shetlands, though you hardly ever see them in the improved ones like the Welshies and the New Forests. They are reasonably common in QH's and Mustangs and not-unheard of in TWH, but otherwise, I think dun is generally seen as a pony thing in the USA. To me, breeding against any color is just as problematic as breeding for a color. Karen Thomas, NC
Re: [IceHorses] Hroi - dark bay?
hey I found this karen... pangare is mealy. 6. Mealy is a single, dominant gene (Pa+ ) which causes lighter areas on the belly, muzzle, inner legs, and over the eyes. It is usually ignored in color description, except for changing black to seal brown, and changing chestnut to sorrel for breeders of draft horses. base color mealy variant black seal brown bay mealy bay chestnut sorrel Janice -- even good horses have bad days sometimes.

Re: [IceHorses] Construction
Anneliese and Penny H: how's the construction progressing on your new houses? Karen: You can tell by the lateness of this answer how far behind I am with just skimming posts. We are in the house; started moving in around Easter. It is not quite finished but the number of boxes sitting around is getting smaller. There is still a lot to be done but I am actually paying some attention to the horses (trimmed their feet last week) and Pa fra Laugarvatni is here breeding some of our mares. So hopefully there will be a few foals in 2009. After that, the old house will be spruced up and then y'all can come and visit. Anneliese
[IceHorses] Falki's blood test results
I had the vet run a blood work up on Falki when he was out here doing vaccinations. I like to get baseline numbers. I him fax the numbers to work and didn't have the numbers from Skutla and Falki so I got a little concerned about the low WBC, RBC, HCT, HGB numbers. When I got home and entered his in with the other two I saw that the others had some low numbers in these same areas. I've attached the file. I think that Judy kept the numbers somewhere, but don't know where. The boys have been good running and playing. Falki is better about getting brushed now that I only do it in the morning. I jump on his back with the neck rope in the evenings and he likes that. He gets jealous if I get on Gloi. He tries to cut us off. Since he likes to chase Gloi and I don't want to find out how good I am at bareback bucking broncos we cut Gloi's ride short and limit to the little area by the compost pile. The doctor that works for me is taking another job with a shorter commute so I've busy recruiting and interviewing. Her last day is end of May and my best prospects can't start till July so I may end up working way too many days in June. Hope I can still get a video for our virtual show. Haven't decided what we are going to do yet. I've been enjoying all the baby pictures and keep saving e-mails to comment on but can't seem to catch up reading much less have time to respond. -- Anna Southern Ohio Skutla's blood count.wps Description: Binary data

On May 5, 2008, at 1:15 PM, Judy Ryder wrote: Any input on this? http://icehorses.blogspot.com/2008/05/ground-parallel-coffin-bone.html I got into a discussion about this on one of the barefoot lists some years back. The contention was that unless a horse was trimmed by their methods designed especially to keep the coffin bone ground parallel and then kept barefoot, the horse wouldn't stay sound and would have a variety of hoof problems. My horses had been trimmed all along by regular farriers who paid careful attention to balancing the hoof, had often been shod after a balanced trim, and had 300 to 1700 miles in distance competitions (depending on the horse), were sound, and had never had an abscess or other hoof problem. I finally took my main competition horse (shod) over to the vet and had an x-ray taken of a front foot. The coffin bone was as close to ground parallel as the xray could resolve, just with competent farrier work based on hoof balance (http://www.horseshoes.com/advice/balancingnormalfoot/ balancingnormalfoot.htm).
