Looks like a 3 ring elevator or gag bit
(http://www.foxhunter.on.ca/tackshop/AboutBits/AboutBits.htm). Without
seeing what is inside the horse's mouth it would seem to be a shorter
shanked version of the icelandic bit.

Thank you to those who responded to my post - I appreciate your
concern. And thank you Janet for your phone call and advice. I'll
keep you posted.

An update on Bo - he's walking a bit better today and the nodules under
his jaw seem to be a little smaller. The swelling in his nose has also
gone down - it's almost back to normal.

As I shared with Janet (on a positive note), Bo hasn't gone off his
feed during his illness - his appetite is great and he's full of life.
He has had strangles in the past (a couple of separate episodes), so
I'm familiar with those sumptoms and how they affect his
eating/behavior.

I going to check him tomorrow morning, and if I don't see more
improvement, I'm planning calling my vet to obtain his x-rays and blood
test results and will call a different vet for a second opinion.

Hi Connie,
When I got my mare the first summer she also got two big swollen
nodules under her jaw. I had the vet do bloodwork and it turned out
to be a reaction to black patch, the toxic mold that grows on clover
leaves. The nodules in her case were swollen lymph nodes. Not sure if
this will help you but it might be something to look into. She has
them again this summer also.

Looks pretty bad although I wouldn't blame it so much on Big Lick (much

[IceHorses] My Daughter and New Granddaughter

2008-07-06 Thread Raven
Hello,
I just wanted to update on my new grandbaby. Sierra Ariel was born on
July 3rd...eight days overdue. My daughter Jenni was induced. About
10 minutes after Jenni gave birth to my granddaughter Sierra, Jenni
started to bleed out, she was rushed into OR and had an emergency
hysterectomy to try to stop the bleeding. Jenni continued to bleed
out, the surgeons did not know what was causing this. Jenni went into
massive shock while in OR, she was on the table for over six hours
...while the doctors tried to control the bleeding and save her life.
A specialist was called in to help stop the bleeding. Jenni was given
a total of 12 pints of blood during the surgery...as she was not
clotting. And the surgeons had no idea why she was not clotting. Not
sure if it was due to the drugs used to induced her or something wrong
with her blood/body. After hours of being worked on...she was
stabilized and they kept her on the table for almost one hourto
make sure the bleeding stopped and she was clotting. After this she
was closed up and taken to ICU, where she remained on a ventilator and
was closely monitored for bleeding. Later the next day...Jenni
continued to stabilize and she was taken off the ventilator. <;p]
I'm happy to report that both my one and only daughter and
granddaughter are both going great! Jenni is exhausted and thanks to
morphinenot suffering too much pain. Jenni has a long recoverer
from giving birth and fighting for her life.

Sierra Ariel was 8.10 lbs and a bit over 21" long, she has strawberry
blond hair. Sierra is a very special baby to our family. And most of
allshe has my beautiful daughter for her mother and my wonderful
son-in-law for her father. My family is very grateful that Jenni is
going to be okay. And we have been blessed with Sierraour miracle
baby.

Here's a link to a few photos. They are not the best...as they were

to catch houseflies and put them inside a hollowed out walnut shell
that he glued back together. Then he would put on pipe cleaner pig
tail and legs and draw a little face and ears and he would shake it up
and set it down on the table and the flies inside would be all stirred

Re: [IceHorses] Seeking info re health issue of Icelandic gelding

2008-07-06 Thread Janice McDonald
i wish i could help you. I too have a horse with a mystery illness
and it is so upsetting and frustrating. Makes you realize some vets
really dont know any more than most of us. I have a vet group. One
is an old country livestock vet. I bet he can sew an eyelid up in
thirty seconds just neat as a pin. I watched him do a cow caesarian,
it was awesome. But he almost killed me telling me to rinse and clear
out my horse's mouth several times a day when he was foaming at the
mouth and it turned out to be rabies. I had many small cuts on my
hands and arms from picking berries and was very exposed to saliva
that way. i never trust any professional, i guess its the old hippie
"question authority" in me. One of my vets is young and savvy and
adventurous, likes a challenge, he is my favorite vet. One is so new I
feel like half the time I am telling HER what to do. one of my horses
got into the chicken feed one time and ate a 25 pound bag. its 15%
protein. I ran him to the vet and she was the only one who could meet
me. She kept hemming and hawwing and I said "arent you gonna pump his
stomach" and she said "actually they don't suggest we do that so
quckly anymore, and besides I think it is probably too late." Then
she said he was definitely foundering, had a high pulse and heat in
one foot. I said "do me a favor and just pump his stomach will you?"
and she did and I bet she pumped out about 20 lbs of green solid feed
material. I feel like I saved him, not her. I dont mean to get off
on all this, my point is vets can be as helpless as we are. If I were
you I would google things, contact people, etc. AT least my vet is
receptive to trying my suggestions. I wonder if your horse could have
strangles. I know of horses that had founder symptoms from strangles.

Re: [IceHorses] High Heads / Necks

2008-07-06 Thread Judy Ryder
Horses and humans and most other animals have seven vertebrae in the neck.

The cervical spine in horses can be shaped very differently.

There are some straight necks, but for the most part, the cervical vertebrae
are shaped in an "S".

The top curve of the "S" can be straight, wide curve, or narrow curve.

The bottom curve of the "S" can be straight, wide curve, or narrow (shallow)
curve.

The shape of the curve can be enhanced to a small degree by the way the
horse uses it's muscles, or how the rider affects the horse with contact and
exercises; but the basic shape will remain the same.

Does the high neckset contribute to his ability to have the high action?
verrry interesting!

The knee action comes from the angle his shoulder makes with his humerus
bone. Don't you remember marking up the horses when Liz was here?
Trausti's shoulder/humerus angle is at one end of "normal", while Melnir's
is at the other. (Again, one not really better than the other, just
different...) Of course, I knew that before we marked them up - Melnir has
a very long reaching stride, while Trauti's is shorter and more animated.
Both are comfortable to ride - they are just different.

one riding instructor/horse trainer said about my Fjóla when we were talking
about her weak trot: "But she's 5-gaited, she doesn't have to trot without

That is true but over the years we have found that it is better overall for
the horse to teach them trot without boots. We have found that by working
with the balance and body flexibility using Connected Groundwork that most
of the horses with little trot without boots or shoes, found the trot very
well. We used to put slightly heavier shoes on the front feet, pretty
common practice. The thing I think that can happen is that there is extra
stress on the fetlock joints with even a little extra weight and you can
have bilateral lameness that often goes unrecognized but can show up in
behavior.

I think, if you are going to add some weight to the front legs, it is
probably better to do so with boots than by constantly wearing heavier
shoes, because the boots come off..

Thanks for the input!

They are at least a hundred years past icelandic people when it comes to
knowing and contriving and developing gait.

I think we have to be sure not to get caught up in *believing without
checking* the way the icelandic-style trainers / breeders / sellers / judges
talk about conformation. Lots of things, like some of the myths with
Icelandic Horses, came to be out of ignorance and are still perpetuated
today.

We need to refer to mainstream conformation and anatomy information that is
current and scientific.

It could be: saddle too long, rider too heavy, horse's back has too much
laxity...

How about this one:

Connie, don't wait until you finish all the medicine to get some professional
help, I live in the east and I have New Bolten above me and Leesburg west of
me, and anytime I am dealing with an unknown, it is financially and
supportively more important to get that horse to a center with immunologists
and hemotologists available to colaborate on what is wrong and the best way to
treat the horse. I have had horses that board at my place that had allergies
that progressed into heaves or horse COPD and another that lost vision in an
eye over the coarse of a month, that were treated at my barn my limited
resources and these things might not have progressed to those levels had I
insisted on going to a medical center to assess the animal with specialists,
especially in one as yourg as yours. Get a team of equine vets to evaluate the
horse and take all of the info you already have, blood work and xrays with you,
they will speed up your delivery of care. And most importantly, good luck to
you. Jeannette

[IceHorses] so FUNNY

2008-07-06 Thread Janice McDonald
oh my gosh I gotta tell you guys this, it is so offtopic tho... but
last evening my husband wormed curly ray our mini donkey. He is the
meanest little dickens! To worm him you have to hold him by the lead
while my husband gets him in a head lock, shoots the wormer in, then
you have to hold his head in the air like a dog or else he will just
not swallow and wait til you walk away and open his mouth and let it
all fall out in a blop. Well last nite he waited a particular long
time, trying to outlast my husband, a war of stubborn wills, showing
the whites of his eyes, while my husband massaged his throat saying
come on buddy, swallow that wormer... he finally could not hang on
and swallowed. My husband said good boy curls!! and loved and loved
on him then walked away and curly CHARGED him with his skittery little
tail wringing bratty snit fit charge. My husband just happened to
turn and see him coming and looked puzzled and curly just immediately
whirled and kicked at the air and bucked and skittered off the other
way just so hilariously MAD. but it was so funny he was going for the
sneak attack and when my husband saw him he chickened out! he is the
most hilarious little turtle head~!

[IceHorses] neckset

2008-07-06 Thread Janice McDonald
ok. well now i am intrigued. I just went out and checked. My horse
with the highest neckset is Trausti, who does a low neck carriage
running walk. But he has real snappy natural high action. Wonder how
that equates. does it mean that a high neck set does not necessarily
mean traveling with a high headed gait? well in Trausti case,
obviously not! Does the high neckset contribute to his ability to
have the high action? verrry interesting!

2008-07-06 Thread Debbie K.
Be careful with putting horses together in Electric pens, as they can
break the pen and scatter, I heard of 2 horses being killed by a semi
when 5 were in a small electric pen for the night, NOT GOOD, they
broke the pen, ran and 2 were hit, one had to be shot, it was
HORRIBLE...

Also, this is how horses are transported for Slaughter, and many
arrive with broken legs, I would not recommend this form a transport
unless it is an emergency situation...

[IceHorses] biglick comments

on my youtube account i posted some horrible video I took at the
biglick show. I have gotten some real entertaining pro and con
comments. These last two just show the mentality for and against
biglick. (Biglick is contrived gait in a horse that does not gait
naturally that way and they use devices and caustic substances to make
them gait, like weighted shoes and boots etc.)

1.

Why don't you people just shoe them with regular shoes and BREED FOR BETTER

i dont want to offend! But please be honest... a while back, maybe
two or three years back, there was a gorgeous blue dun free to a good
home but only if you promised not to ride it because it would always
buck. Is it this horse? If so, I think it would not discourage some
from wanting it, but that people should know. Again, I sure dont want
to offend! I just hate it when people end up with horses that has
health or behavior problems the person is ill equipped to handle.

Did you read that book "Water for Elephants" ? It talks about packing
all the horses into the railcar on the circus train. The person asked
if the horses were so crowded wouldnt they scramble and jostle and
knock each other down and get hurt and the answer was yes, without the
pivitol "wedge" horse. The last one in made it so snug that the
motion of the train made it where there was no room at all for any
excessive moving around. And they could lean against one another for
rest and support. I was forced though circumstances to haul Jaspar
once with two other horses in a two horse trailer, two large qhs. The
other two were paddock mates and friends. and it was their trailer.
we put Jas in first and then the others. I will never forget the look
on his face with those two horses crammed in with him. he was taller
and he looked over his shoulder at me showing the whites of his eyes,
his butt hunkered up. I was a nervous wreck the whole hour ride home
but when we got there all was well. They had been smushed against one
another the whole way :) and we camp at a state park now and then
that has first come first serve stalls. I have often put Jaspar and
Traveller in together in the one tiny stall and all was fine. Also on
a ride once and campout some people put their two horses temporarily
into a roundpen with three others who were pasture mates at home.
WIth enough room to gather up in two clusters oh my gosh the squalling
and fighting. so I guess horses are smart enough to know when to pick
their battles, when there is room to fight and when there is not...

i just know jaspar had this one year real bad. I was worried about it
and never found a source. none of my others had it. He hasnt had it
