[fsug-tvm] Media selection in Kodi using keypad - Raspberry Pi

2016-12-24 Thread Adhin D
Hi friends,

I am trying to build a media center using raspberry pi 2. I want to
autostart a media player (for now I am using Kodi in Raspbian), play an
intro video in which towards the end, prompts for a user input say 1, 2, 3
etc... I'm planning to use a 4x4 membrane keypad for input. When a key is
pressed, corresponding video should play.

So far I have managed to autostart Kodi & autoload a playlist. I have also
found certain tutorials that shows how to connect a 4x4 keypad to Pi,
though I haven't yet tried out that yet.

My real question is, how can I use the key input to select a particular
video in the playlist like in DVD title.

[fsug-tvm] Kubuntu does not starting Dell Inspiron 3537

2014-05-15 Thread Adhin D
Hi Friends,

I recently intalled Kubuntu 14.04 (64bit) on my Dell 3537 laptop.
Installation went smoothly but there is no display once i try to boot into
Ubuntu. I could see some funny striped lines thats all... Tried Ubuntu
also, but same results.
My system is having Intel-ATi switchable graphics. I believe the issue is
related to graphics.
One more strange thing, when I select Windows, the same striped lines
appear while startup. Though it dissaperas when the login screen comes.
Please suggest some solution. I tried googleing, bt didnt help much.

Thanks in advance.

Other than this blackout problem during login, everything works fine. So it
may not be an incompatibility issue. May be a little bit of tweaking may
solve the problem.

[fsug-tvm] Digisol 3G usb datacard on Ubuntu

2014-04-23 Thread Adhin D
Hi friends,

Recently I bought a Digisol 3g USB datacard 9DG-BA 3314. When connected to
my xubuntu 12.04, it was neither recognized as a 3G modem, nor as a CD rom.
However I was able to copy the included software by some other means and
ran the install.sh script. The installation went on without any problems &
I was able to access internet. But my issues are following:

1. I have a 3G data plan (BSNL) but I get only GPRS (less than 5kbps) speed
(not even EDGE).

2. While installation, it didn't ask for APN or any related data, so I
don't know the connection was configured properly. Still able to browse net
at low speed.

3. There was no instructions provided with the software, so I have no idea
on how to connect & disconnect the net. Sometimes when the connection
drops, it doesn't come back at all. Most annoying thing is there is no
notification about the network status. So I dont even know whether I'm
connected to internet or not.

Please help...

increase/ decrease hotkeys.
Is there any permanent solution to keep the screen turned on.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [fsug-tvm] Canon MF 3010 stops after printing 1 page

2013-06-15 Thread Adhin D
I don't think its a problem with cable. After first print job, if I switch
off & on the printer, then again I can take a print. I do believe there is
something to do with configuration.

Any suggestions?

I don't think so. Its a freshly installed system, & there is about 7 GB of
free space in that drive alone. It happened only after installing grapics
driver. As I mentioned earlier I can start Xserver on tty1 using startx
command. I think that graphics driver did something to login screen manager
that I cant even get a login prompt.
Before installing the driver it was running ok. But without the driver, I
cant get a decent screen resolution and also I cant watch any videos.

Hi Mukesh, Thanks for the reply.

I do have an Xorg.conf file which was probable created when I installed
restricted driver for my Intel GMA. My problem is while trying to login
through tty7. Then it shows some routine checks like "Checking battery
state [OK]" and then gets stuck there. Then I press Alt + F1 and I am able
to start Xserver in tty1 (to tty6) by giving "startx" command. So that
couldn't be the problem with Xorg.conf, is it?

[fsug-tvm] Skip network configuration during startup Ubuntu 12.04

2012-09-05 Thread Adhin D
Hi friends,

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 in my Samsung netbook.
During startup, the system waits for network configuration checking, which
takes almost 5 minutes to complete (if not connected to internet). I use
Dataone ADSL connection at home, and while outside I use 3G dongles or
mobile. My guess is that the system is checking for the ADSL connection
during startup, which maynot be available when I'm not at home.

Please give me some solution to skip this network check during startup.

Thanks in advance.

Is this intended for people who already have expertise in blender, or it

Re: [fsug-tvm] Re: Natty Aptoncd package on Karmic

2011-05-18 Thread Adhin D
Hi guys,

I solved the issue in a much simpler way. Thanks to Joji for the reply which
gave me this idea. Joji asked me to update the sources and download packages
using script, in live mode. Then I thought, if downloading the packages is
possible on live session, then I can use Ubuntu software center too. So I
downloaded software using USC & created software cd using aptoncd. I booted
live from pendrive & my system has 2GB ram which was too much for Linux. So
everything went smoothly.
Now my friend is pretty happy now that his computer was prevented from
becoming an e-waste.

Thanks for the replies, Guys. & special thanks for Joji.

But 9.10 is the only version that can put that system to work. Now I'm

[fsug-tvm] Natty Aptoncd package on Karmic

2011-05-11 Thread Adhin D
Hi friends,

My friend has a very old system, which is nearing its end of life. He
installed Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10) & running fine. But he doesn't have decent
internet connection to download additional softwares.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. I've installed additional softwares & created an
installation disk using 'aptoncd'.
I want to know, is it possible to use this installation disk on older
versions of ubuntu, say 9.10 (Karmic). I tried using ubuntu software center,
but is shows dependency problems. But I was able to install packages one by
one.

Any ideas?

If that doesn't work, try this:

Open the terminal type
“*sudo edit /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf*”
change the “*managed=false*” to “*managed=true*” and then save it.

then in the terminal type “*killall nm-system-settings*”

and then reboot.

I have broadband connection that I connect using pppoe. I believe setting
pppoe will disable network manager icon, but not the process.

[fsug-tvm] Ubuntu Netbook remix on HP Mini 120

2011-01-22 Thread Adhin D
Hi all,

My friend tried to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 on HP mini 120-1000 &
he encountered certain issues. I'll brief it one by one...

1. Right click & left click buttons does not work properly. The buttons are
embeded to the touchpad to save space. (I think the OS got confused)
2. he tried to install MTS usb modem but it was not getting detected (as
mass storage device). It comes with s/w compatible with ubuntu, which helps
configuring internet easily.
3. & how can you give netbook remix the ordinary gnome look?

Please help me solve the above mentioned issues...

Well, that depends on how you define a spam...

But if you look at the theme of the movie, this is related to open source.
I saw that movie, its an average one but we FOSS activists will definitely
love it... I'm particularly attracted to the motto "Human knowledge belongs

Re: [fsug-tvm] [OT] Text Aligning in project report

2010-10-21 Thread Adhin D
Well, this is not connected to FOSS. Its merely a standard procedures for
creating reports. But these are more like guidelines not laws. I think you
can find a lot of such tips or guidelines in the internet.

Normally we give intend to the first line most probably a single tab
spacing, but not necessarily the center. Either you can set this in the
paragraph settings, or press "Tab" key & start writing a paragraph...

Is it necessary to start a paragraph like this?
>

Not necessary, but its always good to start a paragraph like that...

The "justified' alignment gives a better appearance to your report. Just
have a look at your text books, all the paragraphs will be aligned justified
to get a pleasant appearance. So this has become a tradition like everything
else...

Like I said these are not rules, but guidelines. But if you are submitting
an academic report then you are supposed to follow the procedures as
directed by your instructors.

Hi,

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. It looked similar to Lucid.
Software center has improved a lot. I hope they would add more repositories

I'm thinking of installing Netbook remix into ordinary PC. Will that be a

What about Malayalam dub? There is not much conversation, so it will be
easier to dub. Also I think the "Raw Materials" will be available soon for
download (or is it already available?). Thus we can make a lossless dub.

My personal favorite is Aitehyamala (because I like scary/fairy stuff) & I
think it needs more popularization than Panchathantra. Panchathantra is
almost popular all over India and also in certain foreign countries. I've
seen a lot of animated series based on panchathantra stories. But
Aitehyamala is not that popular & I don't think any initiative has been made
to film it (unless you count certain TV channels adopting its essence &
manipulate it to fill their serials). So I think we can adopt a story from
Aitehyamala, such that it will stand out.

But I recommend Panchathantra as a start. It will be easier to make a
storyboard out of it..
plus, creating animals will be more easy than humans & illusions, right?
Let's have a look at Panchathantra stories & find something fit. We can save
Aitehyamala for next time...

I had the same question couple of years ago. After a bit of googling I came
across these. But I never tried it, since it involved lot of procedures.
Most of my "exceeding limits" is caused by downloading torrents, so I set
the limit in the torrent client itself.

You may try this if you like, and please comment after using it...

I assume you are using Gnome.
System>Prefrences>Screensaver
Click "Power Management"
In "Generals" tab, under "Actions" "When power button is pressed" set it as

Check whether the sound is mute (look for volume control icon in
notification area near clock, or System>Preferences>Sound). Also check
whether your sound hardware is listed in it.

If this wont work, please reply with more details like Modelname,
motherboard etc...

@kallapattar
These links isn't going to help you. Its for older versions of grub (ubuntu
9.04 and older). The new grub is quite different. Editing the grub.cfg file
is prevented by default.

Editing grub.cfg directly is the best option. But since you are new, I
wouldn't recommend it to you. For you, I recommend using *startupmanager*.
Make sure you have active internet connection before you do this.
To install startupmanager, open *Applications>Ubuntu Software Center*...then
type "startup-manager" in the search area provided (top right corner). You
can see "*StartUp-Manager. Change sttings for bootloader.*" with an
icon of spanner. Click install.

 open terminal & type:
*sudo apt-get install startupmanager*

Once installed, it will appear on *System>Administration>Startup Manager*.
You can change the waiting time from there.

I think you are forgetting the fact that Free softwares doesn't always mean
free of cost. Most of the popular free software developers demands money for
the tech support. I think you may have noticed there are Free alternatives
(open source) for CAD softwares which comes at a price (comparatively low).

The pricing of CAD softwares as I understand, is slightly different from
that of other softwares. They charge (in huge volumes of course) for the
support and the software is a part (major part) of the support, not the
other way around. Most of the CAD softwares I know were used to be
specifically made (customized) for production industries according to their
demand. So they are commonly known by the name CAD/CAM solutions. Now a days
these softwares are used by individuals also and hence it seems to be
becoming almost like any other software.

I know this is not a solution for our issue. Lets not divert from the topic
"whether we should submit a protest to the Corporation and to the State
government or not". I believe as Free Software Activists we should suggest a
better solution (if we have one) without compromising the output, and it
must be quickly applicable. We should tell the Govt. "how" to do it, not
"why" they should do it.

Let's stop this unnecessary debate and come back to the topic...

I read your blog. It was a good one and first of all I should congratulate
for that.

But in the post, you wrote "Govt. should create it". How is that practical?
Are we blaming the Govt. for not having any good Free CAD softwares? Is that
Govt. fault that skilled developers work for multi-national companies where
they are paid high and are not contributing to FOSS?
For the time being lets imagine the Govt. is 100% dedicated...how are they
suppose to create such a software without the support of developers?... Or
perhaps they can pass a law that forces all the CS students/professionals in
the nation to take part in contributing to the project before getting their
degrees/salaries?

BRL-CAD cannot replace Autocad or any other mechanical CAD softwares. I can
say that because I've been trying BRL-CAD for months, it was very different
from CAD modeler...it looked more like high end analysis software. BRL-CAD
maybe a piece of cake for the developers (US Army R&D), but for ordinary CAD
users like us its very difficult. By the look of it, I think eventhough it
is opensource, not much of contribution (from outside) is done on its
development and hence it remains "geeky".

If anyone has used BRL-CAD on regular basis, please let me know...because I
could use some help from somebody.

I don't know about Archemedes, may be it can replace Architectural CAD
modelers and in effect, it may solve the issue mentioned in this thread.

I think you have a dial on demand connection (that requires a user-name and
password to connect). Just follow these steps, if you havn't done it yet.

1. open terminal and type

*sudo pppoeconf*

enter your mint password if asked.*
*
A blue screen will appear inside terminal, you need to select the device
(eth0 by default) then it will ask for your BSNL username and password. This
time enter your BSNL ID and password..after hitting yes for next few steps
it will ask something like"do you want to connect to internet now".
Choose "Yes" if you want to connect. Then check whether internet is
available using your browser.

2. to turn off the connection; in terminal type

*sudo poff*

3. to connect to internet next time, use the command

*sudo pon dsl-provider*
*
*

If you already know this an have done it before, then you may try this for
solving the issue*
*

Open the terminal type

*sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf*

change the “managed=true” to “managed=false” and then save it.

*killall nm-system-settings* * *

and then reboot.

I dunno about Mint, but for Windows you may try system restore. As soon as

Re: [fsug-tvm] Re: Bsnl auto redirect!

2010-06-28 Thread Adhin D
I'm having this problem for last two months. I've upgraded the firmware 2
months ago & also there selfcare s/w (in windows). The method to configure
automatic connection after modem upgrade in Linux is also supplied with the
software (but no selfcare s/w).
After that I was not able to connect to internet. In fact, the selfcare
thing has no use at all. Then I asked about it on this forum & I got a
solution on how to put it back.
http://groups.google.com/group/ilug-tvm/browse_thread/thread/40eaff4e7b35bf79/afbff1690e788b4d?lnk=gst&q=Unable+to+connect+Dataone#afbff1690e788b4d

The real problem is, I'm still redirected to that page, even in windows.
So my opinion is that, just ignore it...I think this will be over soon with
this month...

I have very different experience (might be obsolete). My system runs faster
without swap.
And becomes slower with swap..I mean not during startup, but it slows down
after sometime.
I believe using swap in systems having large amount of RAM helps only in
memory intensive tasks, as Anoop mentioned.
I prefer without using swap, though I miss hibernate...

The error message occurred even when there was only unpartitioned space
(like fresh Hard Disk). So I think that has nothing to do with partition
system... What if the failure to mount partitions is just a symptom of
something else? The CD drive & USB drives are also not getting detected (I
forgot to mention that) and system is awfully slow...
But there was no problem while using Ubuntu 9.10

I dont know whether the issue is with the partition system. I deleted the

2010-04-24 Thread Adhin D
Anybody know how to use Nokia phones as modem in Slitaz linux 3.0 (same as
we do in Ubuntu & other standard distros).
Also tell me whether it is possible to install Ubuntu like network manager

2010-04-16 Thread Adhin D
I'm using smplayer to play DVDs, and works well. I certain cases I have to
manually navigate to other titles using the 'Browse' option (you can see it
in the toolbar & also in context menu)

Re: [fsug-tvm] Unable to connect Dataone

2010-04-15 Thread Adhin D
@ Ajith

Thanks a lot for the tip. I deleted the 'pppoe' setting and created a new
'bridge' setting.
But while configuring protocol settings there was no "UBR without PCR"
setting. So I gave "UBR with PCR" I dont know whether it will make any
difference, its working now.

Once again thanks

I believe the one with VPI/VCI = 0/35 is the one through which I'm getting
connected. I've seen it when the BSNL techs first gave me the connection.
Will it be safe to delete it?

Any other options? Has anyone encountered same problem as mine?
Anyway I'll be calling BSNL tomorrow
