[fsug-tvm] Re: google voice and video chat plugin for linux..

2010-09-15 Thread bipin kumar
great now this discussion is fanning out in to a debate of politics.

politics aside i would like to point out that, most people use an app/
service based on its useablity/functionality and not its licensing
conditions. i ve lot of friends who use google video chat and i cant
force them to use some new IM protocols just because i'm using linux.
bottomline is this, having mainstream apps, proprietary or non
proprietary, available to linux platform will be helpful in increasing
its adoption. now when i am using linux and friends ask can i use
google talk in linux?? i can say a definite yes and maybe down the
line get them interested in trying out linux.

I think fanatic is too strong a word to use in this context. Would you
say that Gandhiji was a fanatic for freedom? Or Mandela for that matter?
I know that there are people who believe that the British rule did a lot
of good for the country, and some even say that it would have been so
much better if the British were still ruling India, because, apparently
according to them, we would have had much less problems. From that point
of view, Gandhiji, Subhash Chandra Bose and so many others become
fanatics. Moreover, let us remember that we are talking about the
software world. That certainly does not mean that we are quite happy
with everything else. Just a look at RMS's blog would show what all
things he fights. But right now, here, we are concerned about software
and we certainly cannot take on the whole world and make everything
free. Each one of us, as individuals, may have a number of concerns, but
cannot fight battles in all fronts simultaneously.

this is not something new, even south indian bank's online banking
service needs internet explorer. i guess these solutions were
developed when IE6 was dominant one. now its gonna cost them hell of a
lot make those services standard compliant. luckily though SBI and
associates(you can say the common man's bank) services are browser and
platform agnostic and even persuade the consumers to use only the
current version of the mainstream browsers.

I hope the authorities will look into the matter seriously if a letter from

ubuntu 10.04 network manager applet is capable os setting up mobile
broadband connections such as reliance. however a bug in the
modemmanager package shipped as default in ubuntu will prevent you
from making connections. the work around is to install the latest
modem manager packages

follow the following steps(you will need a working internet connection
beforehand). it has worked for me but i dont guarantee it will work
for you.

go to system Administration Software Sources, after entering the
sudo password

  1. click on other software tab and click the Add button(on
with big +)
  2. in the dialog box that pops up paste the following link and
click ok

 deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/trunk/ubuntu
lucid main
this will add a 3 rd party repo to
your software sources from which ubuntu can retrieve install software.
these repos comes with a signing key sos a to ensure the validity of
the packages these keys too should be added in the key for this repos
is as follows

and select Add key from paste data
this will add the key to package manager.

Now click on the close' button. it will ask you to reload package
cache, select reload to update the package database.

once reloading is done again go to system Administration update
manager

click on check for updates. followed by Install updates

this will install the most newer version of modem manage and network
manager packages

also k3b will generate md5sum when your are about burn an iso image

i too had similar sort of problems, if u dont mind loosing your
customizations, bookmarks u can do complete uninstall of firefox and
the reinstall from scratch. while uninstalling use the option to
delete the customizations and preferences. after that reboot the
system and install firefox, preferably latest one. u can also backup
bookmarks as well. go to Bookmarks Organize bookmarks. in the
bookmark library click on import and backup and select export html.
this will export all u r bookmarks as an html file which can used to
restore the bookmarks.

Firefox sync is also an excellent addon for syncing and taking backups
of all u r firefox bookmarks, preferences and ui customizations. i
use it to keep my firefox preferences synced between my windows and
linux installation(the latter one being constantly deleted as i try
different distros)

choice, whether it be windows or linux or mac. if the software they
made uses GPL components then they have to publish the source code,
hence anyone can port that application to their platform of choice.
however we cannot force developer to make an application for a
particular platform just because it uses GPL components. they will be
violating the GPL only if they intentionally prevent someone else from
doing so. in this case all you can do is to ask them to provide the
source code since they are using GPL, or rather MPL components.

[fsug-tvm] Re: nvidia graphics problem

2010-06-18 Thread bipin kumar
nvidia do not have opensource driver in the sense that they do not
release their sources under GPL which means bugfixes and improvements
are under sole discretion of nvidia and your distro vendor cannot
optimize it for their build as well or bundle it with the os. however
you still can download sources and compile your driver manually or use
installation script provided along with. the binary nvidia drivers are
also build using the same source using tools rpmbuild etc.

that said the nvidia drivers are as functional as their windows
counterpart and is miles ahead of the offerings by its competitor. i
can even play windows games(world of warcraft, quake) using wine
without any problems on my geforce 130M and i am using the my
distro's, lucid btw, binary drivers from the repos. which you can as
easily install system adminstration Hardware drivers.

while downloading drivers do keep in mind that nvidia releases two
sets of drivers one for legacy GPUs(173.xx series as of now) and one
for latest ones(195.xx series) make sure u install the one matching
your gpu.

if there are any resolution problem a simple sudo nvidia-xconfig from
terminal will solve the problem

[fsug-tvm] Re: nvidia graphics problem

2010-06-18 Thread bipin kumar
as far as i know when you are installing proprietary drivers from
ubuntu repos nouveau drivers are disabled so its not a problem. the
problem you say arises when you are installing drivers using nvidia
supplied source and scripts, which is not a concern for average users
since the drivers supplied by ubuntu repos are stable enough. the only
case where you want want to use nvidia supplied source is when you
want to install or bleeding edge stuff or want install drivers for a
system that do not have a fast internet connection. there is one
more advantage for using nvidia supplied drivers that is whenever a
kernel update is performed there is no need to recompile the drivers.
i know nvidia say their drivers support DKMS however it didn't work
for me in karmic installation when i installed the drivers from
website and i had to recompile the drivers after a kernel update as
opposed to when i was using stock ubuntu packages.

[fsug-tvm] Re: What would be the best practice for the moment?

2010-05-18 Thread bipin kumar
its getting really tiresome.

of course.Adoption of FOSS is a good policy. I am curious about the
selction
of the distro, and the framework created for its maintenance and
improvement.
Making a seperate distro/Custom Linux/DVD remaster is absolutely OK,
if it
the resource demand can be afforded and well managed.

Some problems are:isolation of the new entity from its parent distro.
The
parent distro attained fast maturity because of wide community
support. The
core of new entity (of the new distro/DVD remaster ) is not updated at
the
speed of its parent, making it substandard.

When it is declared as a new entity and isolate it from its parent
forum, it
loses the support from the forum too. When you ask a question to the
debian
forum saying 'i am using i...@school and i would be pleased to get some
comments or the following problem, you get less number of answers.
For
international users dont know i...@school. And they wont be very much
intersted when they really come to know the interests behind declaring
as a
more or less 'new entity'. I mean taking advantage of it, for election
and
other group glorification purposes.

In other words, the govt could have adopted a distro which is
internationally developed, as such, and just add to its specific
demands
(language, specific apps etc). It could have been totally isolated only
when
there is considerable change in policies.

the official docs on efforts from Govt side (Kerala)can be seen at:

in the entire above paragraph you are commenting on the government's
decision without having any substantial info regarding the actual
variables that were used in making such a decision. simply put this is
what i meant by you are shooting in the dark. if you want make such a
statement first get your facts, file an RTI, get the answers from
concerned authorities on what basis they are going ahead with custom
solution and then come back here for a debate, rather than chasing the
smoke.
further why shouldn't government use a custom os for their purpose.
maybe you have given some generic reasons, but that doesn't fly. to
give you an example who said government is going ahead with expensive
dedicated pc based solution for governance, they could have gone for
thin client based solutions as well, where only one good server and
and array of barebone pcs are sufficient for the task. can you imagine
how a full fledged desktop based distro solution fit into this
situation. further it is nothing new that organizations deploy their
own custom linux solution for their purposes, that are radically
different from the mainstream you are so fond of. an example is is the
version of linux deployed in google servers, kernel of which is
radically different from the mainstream linux kernel tree. oracle too
has such a solution. now dont get started on the lines that govt lack
the ability to do so. we do have talented pool of unemployed youth in
kerala, maybe this might be an opportunity for them. lets not be
cynical.

'i am using i...@school and i would be pleased to get some
comments or the following problem
here its the problem of the way of asking the question. rather than
saying i...@school linux its better to say debian sarge(i may be wrong
about actual version of debian used) based distro and one might get
proper answers. its important to ask intelligent questions to get
intelligent answers.

Fact (5) of first post: 5)The students who learn GNU/Linux and
associated systems does not have enough professisonal functionality**
because of comparitively low-perfoming professional softwares in FOSS
arena. They fail to get job.[Fact, main context of thread]

simply put its not fact its just a statement made by you without any
source of reference.
further a person who actually trained well in FOSS based solution is
most likely to be better skilled in adapting solutions that are
dissimilar to one he is experineced, converse is true for proprietary
solutions as well. where is Microsoft word ? syndrome i mentioned
earlier thread becomes valid over here.

look you are going overboard over decisions that normal in a
enterprise/organization. these decisions are result of deliberation
within the organization, and outside advisors. further theses
decisions are also influenced by the organizational need, its
financial condition etc. heck you yourself has stated that govt is
going ahead with a custom solution for their purpose which means that
this solution is optimized for their purpose, i repeat their purpose.
these might include customizing the os specific to hardware/software
set to get their job done. for chrissake these systems are meant to do
official job and not for ordinary use such as watching movies. playing
games.

still if you are convinced about role of linux in an enterprise just
check out the business model and the client list of companies such as
Redhat, Canonical, IBM etc

this is how redhat/canonical makes money. they don't sell the os.
instead they charge for the customer support/service. i.e tailoring
the os to meet the customers need.

earlier you were crying foul about lack of support in linux. if you
want good customer support just pay for it or else be content with the
community support with distros which i should say is doing a fine job
under the circumstances

Remember there is nothing as free lunch.

@Bipin, Unfortunately, I cant imagine user 'Govt' sitting in front of a boot

 enforcer.
Could it be very wrong, if somebody says Govt asked a group of people, and
they made this mistake of instructing govt to use the specific distro in
administrative wings? Consider the frequency of breakdowns as evident in
this mailing list itself. Some end users are not comfortable with current
framework to support FLOSS. What would be the recommendation if Govt gives
the people an opportunity regarding improvement of FLOSS and support frame
work? This opportunity is always there.

[fsug-tvm] Re: What would be the best practice for the moment?

2010-05-17 Thread bipin kumar
Seriously you dont know what you are posting do you?

do a google search and learn about enterprise wide IT deployment
process. better some people in this group might be able to spoon feed
it to you in a way you understand

the word organization here refers to the govt and not fsug or ilug-tvm
or al-qaeda for that matter.

they have their needs and might have consulted with peoples, and i
hope some of them might be from the community as well thats all the
fsug has to do with that decision and since its the govt decision
maybe you can file an RTI to know about actual variables they took in
to their decision making process and then come back here and discuss
the merits and demerits of the aforesaid solution, rather than
shooting in the dark

there is something you have to get into thick skull, the hardware/
software procured by the government is supposed to do only one thing
which is to run the governance related applications(accounting,
inventory etc) and not any other frivolous stuff. the employees will
be trained to run those apps at the taxpayer's(which btw includes you
as well) expense.
further you claim that business model of linux based companies is
based on a flawed premise that, Linux is user-unfriendly and hence
there is requirement of customer support which they are milking for
their commercial purpose. by the same logic the other OS supposedly
user friendly options are then literally ripping off the customers.
first you have to pay exorbitant amounts as licensing, deploy
expensive hardware and pay substantial amounts of money as maintenance
and support fees annually

i will give you an example, assuming the hardware cost being
same(maybe Rs. 00 for arguments sake) the cost of deploying SLED (this
includes OS, basic set of office applications and other productivity
tools, security framework etc) was around 7500 Rs per pc per year
excluding hardware, now if you are to deploy MS Vista/win7
enterprise(under MS EULA one cannot install any other version of
winOSs in commercial platform i.e anything above 25 pcs) you will have
to pay around the same amount for the OS alone, add to that price for
a enterprise wide security solution(same as earlier no retail version
allowed in commercial platforms) along with other required softwares.
now to use OSX you have to buy an relatively expensive hardware
platform just to have access to it. further if MS/apple decide to
cease support for a particular os version you will have shell out
additional amounts in terms of upgrading the hardware alone or else
you will be stuck with outdated and EOL solution. further the apps you
deployed on them might not be compatible to the newer os platform.
this is one the main reasons many organization are not upgrading from
win xp to vista/win7 despite MS pleas/ads. It is educating for you to
read about IE6 debacle that many organization face now.

now leave aside your personal tastes, idiosyncrasies and use the
commonsense and tell us which is better investment of taxpayer’s
money aka your money

what i do with my hardware/software is my concern alone, whether i
play fps, rts or watch porn because i have paid for it with my hard
earned money. the govt/people's money is put into ICT for doing the
sole task of governance and nothing else as stated earlier. you want
to be creative buy your stuff, don't do it on common man's expense.

one point to add there is already a working linux based solution
deployed in public educational system called the i...@school GNU/Linux
if you haven't heard of. it is basically a customized debian distro as
far as i can gather from my tinkering with it. and it is working fine
till date with help of community support i might add. there is enough
opportunity for students to explore their creativity etc in that
platform. the only drawback i see are the luck of sufficient amount of
hardware to ensure optimal access for students, lack of content in
local languages which i should say is being addressed.

now to the last part. if someone is providing free good lunch for you,
fine go and have it by all means. If you don’t like it you have the
option of not going again, there is no compulsion. you cant be prickly
about the amount of salt in the sambar etc

now where does defense research and other RD comes in this context,
will you please explain. now regarding use of macs and other expensive

have you any idea regarding the computational need in an RD lab. just
to give an example three dimensional reconstruction of protein

technology becomes available in other affordable platforms?

i merely state that hardware/software solutions for an enterprise are
made on a case to case basis as per the organizations needs and
financial priorities, and not on a idealogical basis.

you cannot thrust your favourite distro as it is into the throats of
an organization. However open source community can help the government
in taking intelligent decision while deploying an ICT infrastructure.

yeah. so any proposal on how to tackle with this situation? make Linux
customer support under Govt? make FOSS ultimatum under govt support in
a
very transparent way ?

now this is an example of the kind of journalism we see nowadays.
rather than reacting to the whole statement you are making comment on
the basis of a part of my argument and not the complete one. any sane
man reading through this post is going to have serious doubts
regarding your motives. anyway why should government should tackle
such a problem? as per our constitution government can interfere in
the activities of a business only if they are suspected/found to
commit malpractices under the law and not at the whims and fancies of
a person. do you have any proof to the effect that corporations such
as Redhat is giving substandard products/services in order to boost
their profits, then by all means go ahead and sue them or make those
proof public so that we ignorants become enlightened. Till then its
innocent until proven guilty.

Again, the holy cow is ignored. Resaerch eats national income in chunks. No
complaints, would like to hear ther is a lot of FOSS adopted in it.

now this is getting personal and the holy cow expression not humouring
me in this context
put it this way i have a laptop which have brought from my fellowship.
this fellowship isn't anyone's gift or dole, rather i have earned it
and you personally know how difficult is to get one. so its my
prerogative that what i do with my system and your comments are not
welcome in that matter in a public forum. i am aware of the fact that
fellowship is awarded to me by the country in the hope of me doing
something constructive to society and to that extend i will do
whatever i can. however my personal life is not hostage to that fact
an hardware/software solution brought using taxpayers money by the
government for governance purpose should only be used for that purpose
alone and not for playing games by kids of some [public servant, if
they want to do that they can buy their own stuff from their salary.

on the lighter note do us a favour will you? read through your lengthy
statements twice before posting. its getting very difficult make sense
out of those statements, i can do better job making sense from some
journal articles

 Bipin,

As long as people respond, a thread will continue. I don't think
anyone needs to forcefully stop a thread as long as people are
responding and the thread is on topic (or clearly marked off topic).
People can skip threads looking at subjects (meaningful subjects are a
pre condition to that). I'm getting head ache reading some of the
mails in this thread, but may be because it is too late in the night.

hi
it would useful if people read the mailing list practices posted on
the group' s homepage.

http://kandalaya.org/guidelines.html

it would make everyone's life better. further it is my understanding
that once a person sign up for a group then its his/her onus to
respect the the rules/guidlines of the group(which obviously includes
not posting HTML formatted message, as far as my understanding of
those guidelines goes). however if person has any problems with those
guidelines then he/she shouldn't sign up in the first place.

Well I am quite curious how colourfull web pages would get rendered with
 that theme.

[fsug-tvm] Re: How to configure LG monitor TV in any free operating system.

2010-05-09 Thread bipin kumar
As far my understanding goes this monitor tv is no different from any
other LCD TV (Bravia/Vierra etc) sets that can accept VGA/HDMI signals
from your PC/Laptop/consoles. just plug it in to the PC using
appropriate cables, VGA or HDMI and you are good to go. make sure
select appropriate out put resolution in OS. Regarding live recording
of TV programs in this one it is not possible, as said earlier it is
just a TV. To record TV programs you need a tv tuner card with

also run the command from lspci from terminal to see whether your card

instead will show the name of the mafacturer of the chip in the card

[fsug-tvm] Re: Linux haters blog

2010-05-09 Thread bipin kumar
as person using computers from DOS era i will say that linux is user
friendly as any other OS (i've to admit my initial foray into linux
had some difficulties). the percieved lack user friendliness can be
attributed to users understanding of computers. for a person
conditioned in using windows, if he has type a document he will as
where is microsoft word? and not word processor same goes for media
players, document viewers etc. as usage of terminals are concerned 99%
of tasks in linux can be done without use of a terminal, However
techie people who have been using linux for a long time tend give
advices involving use of terminals when one asks for help because they
are comfortable/accustomed with it.

regarding asking for admin password for taking action, increase the
UAC access level higher in vista/win7 and u will see it too will ask
for admin password if u are not logged in as admin in the first place

Bottom line if you put a novice who hasnt touched a computer in his
life time He/She wil find Linux, windows or Mac OS similar in terms of
user friendliness

problem may not be that generic. Try changing distros man, or at least, your

[fsug-tvm] Reliance netconnect Issue with Lucid

2010-05-06 Thread bipin kumar
Hi,

i recently installed lucid in my laptop. everything is going fine
except my reliance netconnect broadband plus connection. I am using
huawei ec1260 modem for connecting to the net. With the karmic i was
perfectly able to connect to the net using the gnome's own network
manager applet. But now i am not able to do the same. the OS detects
the modem fine and sets up the connection fine (number/password etc)
however when i try to dial the connection nothing happens(the nm
applet icon flashes for a while and a notification pops up saying
connection disconnected) has anyone come across same kind problem and
solution if any.

thanks

[fsug-tvm] Re: How to schedule disconnection of internet

2010-03-25 Thread bipin kumar
hi

thanks for advice, what i actually want is disconnect the connection
after a particular time period. what you are suggesting is the way to
manually disconnect the connection like we do as in the case of a dial
up connection. i know that by executing poff command in terminal i
can disconnect the connection, but i want the same to happen
automatically without any kind of user intervention

Hope it may be helpful to you.

well ps2 interface is not hotplug capable so you have to connect the

[fsug-tvm] Re: Mandriva+Reliance netconnect1x

2010-02-22 Thread bipin kumar
Hi,

i am also using a reliance netconnect broadband plus. if you are using
gnome as your desktop environment you can use gnome network manager
for connecting to internet. first plug in your usb modem. right click
on the network manager applet and go to mobile broadband tab. click on
add connection and follow the on screen instructions. it will first
ask the device i.e modem used for connection select your modem i.e ZTE
in your case and click next, if you are lucky, a profile for reliance
netconnect wil be there is the service providers list, select it, if
not enter the settings manually and click ok. in either case you will
have to type in the username and passsword. once all done click ok and
close the network connections box. to connect to net left click on he
network manager applet, in the popup menu click on the connection name
you have given to the dial up connection, say Reliance and you will be
connected. to disconnect once again left click and select disconnect
option.

the process is similar in KDE also. there also you can use kde network
manager for connecting the net. however in the mobile broadband tab
take care to select Add CDMA connection option
also check the network settings of firefox. see whether work offline
is not selected or it is configure use some proxy for connecting to
the net

 any idea abt it??

N.B:- no one please dnt  purchase this cdma1x.. its performance is pathetic

[fsug-tvm] Re: File sharing through Wi-Fi network

2010-02-20 Thread bipin kumar
Hi there

hope the following stuff will be of help. it works for me in
ubuntu 9.10 karmic. i will split this into two halves First is setup
your linux machine with samba and second is accessing files from your
friends systems
I. Setting up your system
install system-config-samba by giving command

sudo aptitude system-config-samba

once the installation is finished go to

system administration samba to open Samba Server Configuration

in the Samba Server Configuration go to

Preferences Server Setting
this will pop up a dialog box with two tabs namely Basic Security

in the basic tab

specify the workgroup (it is advisable to have all u r friends systems
including non linux ones in same workgroup, say Hostel)

and in security group change authentication mode to Share(User setting
too works) leave the rest of the settings to their defaults
once your done click OK
now go to File Add share or click on the Big + button on the
toolbar to get a dialog box to add folder u need to share
this dialog is almost self explanatory select the folder(for instance
'Library'), give a share name (preferably a shorter one, 'library' in
this case), check visible if everyone should be able to see the share
through either network neighbourhood(windows systems) or smb:///(linux
boxes), check writable if u r friends should be able to modify the
files. in the access tab u can configure access settings i.e everbody
or select users who can access(Please read the next para before u give
setup user access). once u r done click Ok and voila u r share is
ready to be accessed over the network. to be on safe side restart
samba service by executing following command in terminal

sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

since your primary linux user account will have sudo privilages it is
not desirable use that account to access file from the client machine.
so here is what i did i created a new user account named 'shareuser'
using system administration users and groups. click the lock icon
to enable administrator privileges. click on add user enter the user
name, shareuser in thisexample and password, say 'xx' and select
profile desktop user. do not select administrator profile!!. after
this i give this user access to the share in Access tab.

II. accessing from a client machine (i am assuming your machine name
to be, say, enigma for this step)

assuming that all u guys are in same workgroup(windows and linux
included. mac guys too) u will see the your machine(something like
enigma(samba, ubuntu)) in the network neighbourhood or smb:///(or
rather Places network). in case of windows machine if it does not
show just click the link view workgroup computers this will most
probably show the available workgroups browse to your work group i.e
hostel and nd access your machine enigma annd u can see the shared
folder in it. now while opening share user name and password will be
asked give the user name, shareuser in this example and password
'xx' to access the contents

in windows machines u can also map the shares as network drives the
procedure is as follows
1. Right click on 'My Computer' icon, either on desktop or start menu,
and select 'Map Network Drive'.
2. Now select drive letter' default is Z; and last available one and
enter the share location in the format \\server name\share (for this
example \\enigma\library)
3. click the link 'connect using a different username' and enter the
username (shareuser) and password (xx) and click OK / Finish
buttons

now the share will appear as a network drive in the my computer.

Well that is it for now. hope that it will work for you as it has done
for me and all the best.

Bipin

Again i hope that this will work for you as it has done for me and all

[fsug-tvm] Re: Startup Manager in Karmic

2010-02-19 Thread bipin kumar
hi,

i never said that grub.cfg cannot be edited manually instead i said
it was not recommended. i would like to add that once you comment out
the unwanted entries, during installation of new kernel packages the
'update-grub' will reinsert the older kernels if its still installed
in the system. Further during this process it will update the grub
config entries such as default item, boot timeout etc as read from
the file '/etc/default/grub'. so the manual changes in the grub.cfg is
prone to be overwritten during a kernel update process. However it
does not apply to those offline systems where frequent update is not
carried out. this is what i could understand from reading through the
grub2 documentation(but then i am not a geek either).

I was not talking about the link you posted. I agree with you fully that its
more detailed comparatively easy to understand than anything I read
 before.
It will be useful for those who are interested (both geeks non-geeks)
about doing those things. But what about the others, those we FSAs convince
with a great difficulty. Probably they'll be dual booting will be asking
for windows as primary choice, also want to remove all other unnecessary
entries. We cannot sit in front of them editing those config files mess up
the grub. I'm telling this because I made that very mistake.

I was commenting about the idea of editing grub indirectly by playing with
 other files.
I mean what is the difference if we directly edit the grub or let those
config files do it? If we make any mistake in editing the config files,
it'll mess up the grub too...What is the difference?
 I couldn't find a satisfactory answer for that...Hope you'll have one,
please enlighten me (no links, just tell what you know.)

 I too never said that...
I usually edit grub directly by removing write protection.

Like you said, we ordinary desktop users don't update the kernels that
frequently. We go for full distro upgrade or fresh install. So that wont be
a problem. Besides if something bad happens with editing grub, it'll be
handy wont it, those config files putting it back?

But I still don't understand why editing grub.cfg  is prevented. I hope
somebody can provide a better answer...

Anyway, lets wind up this discussion. This post is diverting from the
 topic...

glad to hear that i could be of help :-).

regrading the i am not geek comment above, i would like to point
out that i am not a geek either and that i was expressing an opinion
based on my experience. the instructions are simple enough if u have
the patience to read through it. i admit is a bit of lengthy manual.

if u want u cab remove the unused kernel images using synaptics. this

  system Administration synaptic package manager

look for entries starting  with linux-image-xx

where is the version number. mark for uninstall entries that u do
not wish to use and click apply. this will automatically remove the
grub entries as well. be careful not to remove the most recent kernel
that u probably  might be using. this will lead to system being
unbootable after restart. the advantage of this method is that u can
free up lot of free space that otherwise were used up by the older
  kernel packages

  hope this well help
