Mr.Baskar,

Just curious.

Today's h/w box cost at www.deltapage.com:
 Intel Atom processor+MB - 3500 /-
+
2GB RAM - 1000 /-
+
1TB HDD 5000/-
+
 UMPC Cabinet 1500/-

= 11000 /-

So does your s/w cost 75k - 11k = 64k !

Is the source code of the lab server available free?

Your calculation is right. But, downloaded 1TB of all latest distros,
documentations, source code
from various websites/repositories, organized for easy access, configuration of
mail server, mailing list, mediawiki,
wordpress, automatic single click remote installation of distros and several
other features and backed
with 3 years of support adds that another 64K. (plus our commercial thinclient
which is widely
used by many educational institutions (which helped them saving several lakhs
of rupees spent for costly hardware upgrades and maintenance for years) itself
worth that 64k)

If curious, you can see the demo in our office and really you would get excited.

What software (server) will you use for A/V conference? Who will host
the conferencing server? Does the host have the bandwidth to support
simultaneous client connection @ 640x480 res. to say 10 "centres" where

I remember a story where an ex-employee is called to fix a machine that was
troubling folks for a long time in a factory. He came in, turned a few bolts
and it was all up and running smoothly. He sends a bill for $1000 and the
manager scoffs asking a question " $1000 to turn a few bolts?". The guy
replies "No. $10 for turning the bolts and $990 for knowing which ones to
turn and by how much."

It is always an issue when one has to price knowhow. It does take a
significant amount of time, resources, commitment and drive to get to a
position where one can do things easily. I used to run a similar business 12
years ago. I used to price my services at 50% of the licence cost of an
equivalent M$ solution. I had a fledging business then before I moved on.

Common Man - Kilpauk Kandaswamy,

Allow me the liberty of answering your question. I am not sure whether Mr.
Baskar offers the source for free to everyone. If he does, that shows his
generosity.

To follow licence terms of open source software, he just needs to provide
source code to those *who bought his server. *Not to everyone.

I admire Baskar for the persistent efforts his company has been making to
bring Open Source options to educational institutions. As he had pointed
out, he has been doing it for over 5 years.

Efforts by Linux User Groups should be complimented by commercial offers
such as Linuxpert Academy for open source to thrive.

Disclaimer : I have met Baskar only once in a Linux Demo Day and just said
hello. I do not recall any other personal or professional communication with
him.

Best regards,

Bandwidth is the main thing to be considered. Putting this of the top
of my head - for A/V each "client" you will need about 256Kbps
upstream/downstream. The server will have to support the stream for
all the conference clients - the b/w requirement grows.

I am not sure if any commercial hosting will support such an
application.

Yes , I asked them and they just go by the bandwidth. It is pretty
expensive though !

But DIMDIM hosted version is okay. Something affordable say $99 per year
for 20 member size meetings.

Dear Mr.Baskar,

Just curious. You have not explicitly mentioned the License under which
your so called
"FOSS Webstore Server" is distributed. You just mentioned the license
of the s/w's present in "FOSS Webstore Server", not about the
"Server"'s license.Could you please elaborate?

Hello,

I appreciate the efforts of everyone who tries to set up a
software business given the way in which the entire expectation of
manufacturers, users and the public is skewed by the way in which this
has been done over the last 20 years or so. However, corrections are
required!

That is not what the GPLv2 says. Quoting from section 3.

Any chance of also including OpenBSD in this excellent list?

Sorry for the top post.

Somewhere in your config you need to mention which domains can be
considered local and which ones are remote. I don't see this in your
config below.

After this step, you'll also need to configure your server to permit
mail relaying. This ensures that clients can send mail to non-local
domains by using your smtp server as a relay host.

[Ilugc] [X-Post] Freenode is looking for donations

2009-03-28 Thread Parthan SR

- Forwarded Content --

I will try to keep this brief and to the point. This message has been
cross posted to several lists which will explain why you might get
more than one copy. I hope you find it informative too. Send all
flames to me, not to the lists.

I'm taking off the other hats I wear for a moment to ask for you or
your company's support of Freenode [1] (technically the Peer-Directed
Projects Center or PDPC) now based in the United Kingdom. For those
that don't know, Freenode is an IRC [2] network supporting Open Source
and Free Software communities globally. Another PDPC activity is the
annual FOSSCON conference in the fall. PDPC is specifically [3]
raising funds in order to be recognized by the UK as an official
charitable organization. This status has many benefits, however they
need to raise a certain amount of money by March, 2009. There are
just a few days left in the fundraising campaign.

Canonical Ltd. (the company created by Mark Shuttleworth that drives
Ubuntu Linux) has graciously stepped forward to provide dollar for
dollar matching, magnifying the impact of your donations to PDPC. The
fund raising goal has almost been reached but your contribution is
needed. Brainstorming by the PDPC board of directors for how to use
any funds not used for operations includes hosting live conference
events in Europe and the US, extending current services and improving
the reliability of the freenode network by hosting a few of their own
hubs and backup systems. Freenode is growing rapidly [4] supporting
up to 57,000 concurrent users up from a maximum of about 40,000 18
months ago.

Some people may not be aware that IRC is used by a huge array of Open
Source and Free Software projects. The list of groups [5] Freenode
works with is truly impressive. I feel it is not at all hyperbole to
say that the work done over freenode and OFTC [6] are the real-time
backbone of open source collaboration throughout the world, Coders
use the IRC network to develop applications used by millions of people
every day and provide *end user support*. If you use any open source
software you may be an indirect beneficiary of the services Freenode
provides. I encourage those who are interested to try launching an
IRC client such as Pidgin [7] and see for yourself. You won't be
sorry you did.

While I have used Freenode for many years, this year I too became a
contributor for the first time. For a one time contribution
http://freenode.net/pdpc_donations.shtml of as little as $8 you can
join me in supporting Freenode and the many Open Source
projects they serve.

Thanks for your consideration,

Now OpenBSD 4.4 for i386 with repository is part of it and thanks for pointing
that.

ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.4/i386/
ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.4/packages/i386/

and also including amd64 with base packages only. Any specific request
including documentation will also be appreciated,
since The "FOSS Webstore Server" focus more on documentation than software
binaries and sources.

Shall we go with PCBSD 7.0.2 also?

Note that there are many custom variants (spins) of Fedora at
http://spins.fedoraproject.org. LTSP and Fedora Electronics Lab spins
are quite popular in India. You might want to include the ones that will
be useful for students.

Dear Baskar,

You have not still elaborated on my query regarding the license of
your "FOSS Webstore Server". I find no info in your flier regarding
the license under which your "Server" is distributed.

Trying to understand better.

*Accompany it with a written offer*

What does it refer to? Who gets the offer?

My understanding is that, recipient of your software (derivative of GPLed
software) gets the offer of Free Source Code. *not everyone. *Correct me if
I am wrong.
