Since 2014, FSFTN has started to use discourse as a platform to engage,
discuss and organize. You can find the public events and campaigns here
 http://discuss.fsftn.org/category/public-events-campaigns

Looking at the campaigns, i rarely see that FSFTN encourages in
contribution to the community in terms of code or manual or bug fixing etc.

most of them are related to consumption or installation.

FSFTN is very actively engaged in building Free Software, Free Culture
Free Infrastructure communities around TamilNadu and Pondicherry.

why the need for Free Culture Free Infrastructure communities ?

FSFTN organizes Summer Camp every year (Last month Summer Camp for 2015
was organized at IIT Madras), it has also some College / regional level
GLUG's affiliated with it, it took the issue of violation of Net Neutrality
offline through public campaigns at Chennai and Puducherry, Documentary
Screening, organize workshops for general public like Cryptoparty,
 Initiating community projects, etc.,

Nice.

Most of them are related to Net Neutrality :) .

I most of the time see that ILUGC promotes installation, usages etc but
never influence people to write / contribute free software. (including
myself)

One question to all ILUGC members:

Out of all the members in ILUGC, how many of them are real contributors in
terms of code, testing, manuals to the GNU / LINUX or any Free Software
projects etc?

Just curious to know. i may be wrong too.

Google says fsftn.org - This site may be hacked. Timeline of events are
upto 2013 from the menu.

i am not here to pin point.

whether its a committee or community, its the individual contribution that
matters.

 Dear All,

Let me clarify my proposal again,

 *Short-Term-Goals*:
Let community decide collectively what is the goal as a community which we
are trying to achieve for a year.

*Why?* By adopting this process we create a great scope to involve
interested people from community, who otherwise remained dormant or just a
spectator, to give suggestion on what they feel as necessary and what can
we as a community to be done for a year. *Isnt it involving individual
 contributors?*

 *Co-ordination Committee:*
A team of volunteers, who come forward to implement the collectively
decided short-term-goal. With following basic qualities,

 1) Co-ordination Committee should not have hierarchy.
 2) Co-ordination Committee should have physical volunteers.
 3) Co-ordination Committee members should be accountable.
 4) Co-ordination Committee should be changed periodically, say once a year.

 *Why?*
 1) No hierarchy: is because of the practice of community model.
 2) Necessary of physical volunteers: is because we need people on the
ground to organize anything to reach public.
 3) Need for accountability: it is to make sure, there are no one sitting
inside committee and just give suggestion.
 4) Periodical Change: it is to make sure, we give opportunity for new
people, through which they learn organizing events.

 *More:*
 1) Already guiding team( Raman, Bharathi, Shakthi, Baskar, Thyagarajan, and
others) are doing great in community. Can they do it eternally?
 2) I hope there is already an external co-ordination happening to guide
co-ordinator outside malinglist, why not formalize it?
 3) having co-ordinator never stopped any individual from contributing, how
come having a team of co-ordinators will affect individual contributions?

*Core point:* Defining short-term-goals will make a mailinglist a action
oriented community. Individual co-ordinator as a model has short comings,
which we have experienced, let us try a team of co-ordinators without
 hindering the community principles.

If there people feel discomfort in my proposal, please do question it.

It is merged with open-tamil library too.

 https://github.com/arcturusannamalai/open-tamil

Currently it is a command line application and many non-tech people
feel tough to install and use it.

We need a web application with the following features.

 1. one huge text area to get input text in any encoding
 2. List of all 25 encodings available as option buttons to choose one.
 3. A button with label Convert to Unicode

After pressing the button, the text should be converted into unicode
using the above mentioned python code/library.

 4. The converted text should be displayed in another text area.

 Example : http://www.suratha.com/reader.htm

This does the conversion using javascript.

We ported this into python and now we need a web front end for python
 backend.

Can anyone do this as a open source project?

 Thanks.

An average Indian spends about 30 minutes of his time on the internet every
day. On that Facebook and Google tops the list. Young men, college and
school going students dominate the social media in urban India. A survey,
conducted by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB,
said the young men contribute nearly 35% to the overall urban social
networking base. About 34 % are from the top 8 metros, an equal pie is
contributed by small towns with a population of up to 5 lakh. Facebook
virtually dwarfs all other social networking sites in India, with 97% of 5
crore of active Internet users accessing the site.

Everyone uses Google at least once a day and Google has become a starting

So Why indian enterperneurs not having the idea of start up sites Like

Good choice. but Expensive if you buy in INDIA.

 1. Make it a dual boot OSX and Ubuntu system

OSX is a variant of Unix. you have all the tools you need for web dev. you
can use macports for installing any open source tools you need

 2. Use VirtualBox to run Ubuntu (and maybe even Win7)

Anyone here, who has gone through this, share their experience? Any specifc
pitfall that I should be aware of?

Virtualbox is good and it supports ubuntu in mac os x lion. i never found a
reason to use it.
mac os x with tools like MAMP or XAMPP, GIMP should be enough for web

FOSS lab setup is free of cost only for the first 30-35 computers and
additional computers are charged at Rs.200/- each (in multiples of 10). So
far, only one college has requested and paid for additional computers.

 good

Few of the colleges were interested in purchasing our FOSS lab server to
implement open source throughout the institution (our business model
 remains
 sustainable/profitable only in this way).

is FOSS lab server a product?

Additionally we also provide services like implementation of DSpace with
browser based video streaming for NPTEL video contents developed by IITs
 and
IISc and LTSP based lab setup for internet browsing / first year lab in
 engineering colleges.

Currently we serve about 300+ academic institutions in the state and hope
 to
double this no. in the next two years.

 Like!

As I see many of the Institutions in Tamilnadu have been heavily investing
for new technology related products, FOSS related products / services has
good market potential in the educational vertical.

Thank you. Yes, it will be great. But, it is not our priority now. We will
be working on integrating a WYSIWYG editor first.

Lets use the default Wiki editing mode for some time. thats what
wikipedia uses. adding WYSIWYG to wiki adds lot of HTML tags which are
not necessary.

I would suggest that we should keep it as it is. As many wiki editors
know the default wiki editing mode. personally, i dont like WYSIWYG
for wiki.

For your information, the offer did not come from a single

[Ilugc] what is LAMP?

2010-05-31 Thread balachandar muruganantham
As per the article,
http://onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2001/01/25/lamp.html

the author says
Of course, there are plenty of excellent open source variants for any of
the pieces of LAMP. Let the L stand for Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and
Darwin/Mac OS X, all of which are open source operating systems and all but
the latter have open source GUI layers. Let the M stand for MySQL and
PostGreSQL. Let the P stand for PHP, Perl, Python, and Ruby.

It is the author assumption. its not what every one took it.

As per Wiki,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAMP_%28software_bundle%29

LAMP represents Linux (any flavour), Apache HTTP, MySQL, Perp / PHP / Python
(may be )

If wiki is not correct, please read this from IBM research
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/wa-dw-wa-lamp-i.html

To keep it simple for the beginners, LAMP should represent as Linux, Apache
web server, MySQL. PHP / Perl

may be for advanced users, it can be a platform or stack or what ever.

but one should remember Linux is not OS. its just a Kernel. In that case,
LAMP abbreviation is not correct.

ps: Starting a different thread on what is LAMP.

I want to parse a C source code file using python.I want to separate each
and every string in the c file to process in python.

For example,
  #includestdio.h
  int main()
  {
 int i=0;
 for(i=0;i10;i++)
 {
   printf(i = %d,i);
 }
 return(0);
  }

Then i want to tokenize this file like this.

#includestdio.h
int,main,(,),{,int,i,=,0,;,for,(,i,=,0,i,,10 ( Like that i want to parse
the entire file)

I am new to python.I tried split command. But it can split by using separator. So
i cant exactly tokenize the file as i like.Guys i am really in need of doing

Hi,
I tried to dump the audio from an avi file to ogg file using mplayer.

mplayer -dumpaudio vizhiye.avi -dumpfile vizhiye.ogg

It succeeds and mplayer playbacks the file fine.

2009-11-27 Thread Balachandar

   Hi,
I tried to configure empathy IM for my google account, but its showing
   Network error.
i changed my server name to talk.google.com: , but still no use

Hi
I m using empathy in fedora 11.I too got that problem frequently. But quitting
empathy and restarting empathy will help me sometimes. And sometime it log in
successfully but doesn't show my friend's list.I hope upgrading to the newest
version of fedora will fix this.I guess Slow internet connection also makes it
happen.

For this you need a working internet connection and i guess you are
not
using a proxy server.May be a temporary network problem.Try to retry again .
