[Ilugc] EduFair
Hi, This mail is to inform all members of ILUGC about Bhavan's (my school) Young Indian's Educational Fair. One of the leading complaints of people whom I have switched toFOSS is that there is virtually no "local PC guy" who knows FOSSsoftware. So, if they call them up for some help, they justreinstall *Windows*. So, I realized the need for "Local PC guys" whoknow FOSS. I saw the opportunity for that in the EduFair. EduFair is a Educational Fair (you guessed it right) for school drop-outs from slums of near-by areas for our school. It gives thema chance to work and make a living. NGOs would be offering themvarious options in the field of vocational training. Around 500+school drop-outs would be attending the EduFair. I thought ILUGC would be a great "NGO" in teaching them various simple FOSS skills like installing and configuring Ubuntu, etc.,Zoho (the SAAS Office Provider) is also coming. I hope the kindhearted persons in ILUGC would be able to teach them the basicskills that "The Local PC Guy" requires. The main problem as far asI can see now, is getting "The Local PC Guys" to accept that thereare better software that is free. We don't have to make the schooldrop-outs unlearn the conventional *Windows* tricks. It would begood deed to us all, because we can start consuming the resources offered by the new FOSS-trained "Local PC Guys". By the way, it'snot going to be free, and we can expect Yi Net to give some moneyfor the training purposes. The event is to be held on the comingSunday. Bhavan's is willing to let us have a stall, so that theinterested guys can come and have a look. P.S: Most of school drop-outs are not totally unaware of computers. They do know most basic stuff. The event is being organized this Sunday (5th December) With Regards, --Kumaran R ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
[Ilugc] Re: EduFair
Hi, A quick note on Cyclone and Bhavan's Yi: Bhavans YI is a part of the Young Indians net, an integral part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and comprises of a group of young Indian achievers and professionals from various walks of like. It lives with the belief that young Indians can contribute to the community and society at large. It was started to involve the youth in social and developmental projects. It focuses on issues of national importance and motivates a generational change in the economic and social agenda of India. Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram(my school) has housed Yi for five years. Some of the projects done by us are: A book mark sale in Odyssey, the proceeds of which were donated to charity Traffic management in and around school, encouraging car pooling for our school students The green cover, where we planted saplings in our school premises. On International Climate Action Day, 350 saplings were planted as 350 is the safest ppm of carbon dioxide limit in the atmosphere. A special Diwali sale We donated clothes and toys collected from our students to a school for the mentally and physically challenged, Gnana Deepam Slum empowerment project wherein we aim on empowering the slum dwellers of our locality by teaching them employable skills. We conducted a medical camp for them and managed to help 200+ with the aid of VS Hospital We shall also be creating awareness on certain issues which will be done in the form of street plays, seminars, etc,. As part of our projects this year, we are organising an a Educational Fair, to give the school drop-outs from the nearby slums to give them a chance to earn a living. Re: [Ilugc] how to stop automatic updates
Hi, Automatic updates are very important for any computer connected to the internet. But most of the Windows machines disable it due to the "Windows Genuine Advantage" problem. Further, with Linux you will need to install software from the on-line repository which will also consume your download limit. I strongly suggest you to go for an unlimited connection. You can also try other ISP like You telecom, Tikona, etc,. for cheaper unlimited connections. But, if you still want to disable automatic updates, you can do it with the help of Synaptic Package Manager, in Ubuntu. P.S: MP3, DVD codecs and Flash plugins will also have to be downloaded from the Internet With Regards, --Kumaran R -Original Message- From: balaji sivanath To: ilugc Sent: Mon, Dec 6, 2010 10:23 am Subject: [Ilugc] how to stop automatic updates hi, i am going to apply for bsnl limited plan, now am using ubuntu.. my friends said limited plan is dangerous, they will not show correct bandwidth usage it will end up in huge bills. how to check correct bandwidth usage and how to stop automatic updates,no application should connect internet without my permission, what to do for that? [Ilugc] New Year Resolution
Hi, Admit it! We love to bitch about how terrible India is. How terrible our economy is. How we’ll never be able to clean up the gross pollution….. The bitter fact is that we’re always waiting for someone to begin a ‘MASS MOVEMENT’ that would ‘CHANGE INDIA’S ECONOMY, CLEAN UP OUR STREETS AND ERADICATE POVERTY – OVERNIGHT’. Wake up people! That’s never gonna happen. Forget the MASS MOVEMENT. Why don’t we start a small, tiny, microscopic movement? Just YOU, ME and OUR FRIENDS. Let’s get together and make four small NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS that we WON’T break. 1. LET’S RESOLVE NOT TO BARGAIN: Don’t we all love to bargain with our local vendor. Cut him/her down a rupee or two? Would we ever try this at a Shopping Mall like Food World? Or at a Raymonds/Garden showroom? They’re the ones that rip us off BIG TIME! The few extra rupees our local vendor makes off us would go a long way to improve his/her life. That’s where our economic growth begins. 2. LET’S RESOLVE TO PAY OUR LABOURERS A LITTLE MORE: Pretty much the same thing. Quite often we are Paisa wise and Rupee foolish. Paying our servant/dhobi/sewage cleaner a few rupees more will go a long way in ensuring that the so-called ‘lower strata’ of India is given more purchasing power. That is definitely the first step in building up our economy. It won’t blow a hole in our pockets – trust me. 3. LET’S RESOLVE TO USE DUSTBINS: Of course you’re gonna say that you’re already doing that. Well, think about the many times you’ve tossed a scrap of paper onto the road murmering to yourself, “er..no..dustbin in sight..”. Think about the times you tossed a paper/plastic cup out of your car/a bus/a train thinking that one tiny scrap won’t make too much of a difference. Now think about two million people doing the same thing!! It’s a fact that we don’t have enough dustbins in public places. But would it hurt to carry your litter to the nearest dustbin? I’ve done it and it hasn’t hurt one bit. 4. LET’S RESOLVE NOT TO SPIT IN PUBLIC: Sometimes I think this is India’s national sport! Paan, phlegm, just about anything…PTHEW! Onto the street. On the wall. On the door. On the train. In the bus… In fact I had the misfortune of finding myself behind a brand new Mercedes at a signal. Click! The door opened and a cool looking dude popped his head out and spat his true colours onto the road!! Man! Let’s just try and contain it till we reach a wash basin, or find a tissue that would help us dispose of it. I bet we as a Nation will save tons of money on whitewashing alone if this can be done. This isn’t a big SAVE INDIA MOVEMENT. It’s a ‘LET’S GET REAL’ movement. Follow these four resolutions to start with, pass it on to your friends and I bet that by the end of this year the change will be evident. If you’re convinced, pass this on to your friends with a personal note. You won’t get bad luck if you don’t, you won’t get a lucky phone call within 5 minutes if you do, but you’ll definitely make a change. FORGET THE MOVEMENT. YOU ARE THE MOVEMENT. [Ilugc] Need ideas for school project
Hi, I need some ideas for the project that I and 2 of my friends are supposed to do. The only software we can use are NetBeans IDE (w/ Java) and MySQL. We can't use the Internet, so Data Mining, which I thought of as a great idea is off the list. The application, that we develop is supposed to have some integration with the backend as MySQL database, and the front end as NetBeans (w/ Java). Re: [Ilugc] RHEL vs Centos vs fedora
Hi, Personally I use Fedora 14 and CentOS 5.5. I've used RHEL 5.x and am yet to test RHEL 6. I use Fedora, for desktops and CentOS for my servers. I find CentOS/RHEL to be more stable than many other distros. Fedora and RHEL are both funded by Redhat. In short, Fedora is the testbed for RHEL. Usually, Fedora is the bleeding edge software, so tends to be unstable. It is supported with updates for 13 months, and is released every 6 months. So, it gives you the option of skipping 1 release. It has community support. RHEL is the mature Fedora, after bug-fixing. It is currently the industry standard Enterprise Linux solution. It has extended support upto 10 years, and a new release is launched every 2-3 years. It is highly stable, and geared towards the industry, with extensive virtualization support. Redhat primarily makes money by supporting RHEL. Don't expect to use the latest version of Open/Libre Office or Firefox, if you're using RHEL. CentOS/Scientific Linux is just a redhat branding stripped version of RHEL. It lags behind RHEL by a couple of moths. It's also very stable. [Ilugc] [field-report] Android in x86
Hi, I have tried android 2.2 (froyo) on IBM Thinkpad R51 (Centrino 1.6, 512 MB RAM) on a live cd. I also tried it in a HP nc6400 (Core Duo, 3 GB RAM). On both the computers it ran fine, except for dialing, which killed the phone service (due to obvious reasons). Generally, it was fast and responsive. We can use it as a test bed for app development and also for testing android before investing in a device. The live cd is only 86 MB in size. They even have an option for installing it to your hard-drive, although I didn't test it. Being a touch based interface, it was a bit awkward to use a pointing device. Maybe some day we can have android running as a quick-boot OS for netbooks (aka splashtop). I also noticed that Android may be considered practically the first OS, to use Linux w/o the GNU system. So, maybe when talking about Android, using Linux rather than GNU/Linux is better. :-D P.S.: It failed to run on my AMD system, due to graphics problems. Re: [Ilugc] VB and Flash in CBSE curriculum
Hi, I'm a school student myself studying in CBSE, 11th Std., As far as I can remember, I was taught VB and Flash in my 6th and 7th std. too, but then I never payed much attention to it, because I was playing with Eclipse and Blender at my home. Also, the marks are not included for promotion (if that's the main criteria). I don't think CBSE mandates the curriculum for CS below class 9 (have to check it up). I would like to say that CBSE has changed its senior secondary curriculum to comply with Open standards. They have 2 streams - namely CS (Computer Science) and IP (Informatics Practices). CS deals with C++ and IP deals with the front-end and back-end connectivity. Previously, CBSE had used VB and Oracle for the IP stream. But now, I'm learning Netbeans w/ JAVA and MySQL. But then again, the SWING API which we're learning now in Netbeans has become obsolete. Both the products are owned by a single company, namely Oracle, which has earned the wrath of many Open source enthusiasts. The C++ that is being taught in schools, is by using the old Turbo C++ ide. It's high time they change it to gcc. As far as my text book is concerned it goes like this: "Now click the start button, go to programs menu and choose MySQL command prompt." Some of my friends whom I've asked to switch, have asked me, "Will C++ work in Linux?" :-( Although CBSE has mandated that the curriculum has to be based on open standards, what is the use of having an entire open stack of applications to learn, when your base Operating System is closed and proprietary? Hi, From the student's point of view, and as a student myself, cutting of internet access totally is very restrictive, and more harmful than having unmetered access. In this era of internet, its use and mis-use is one's one responsibility. I think that monitoring the system's activity remotely using VNC, or logging internet usage would be a good idea, as the concept of logging and monitoring deters much unwanted behavior. I would also suggest using a DNS based blocking system, like openDNS. Re: [Ilugc] ssd and linux
Hi, Most of my friends are going to buy an SSD, mostly due to its quicker boot time and random read and write speeds. As far as prices in India, SSDs are definietly costlier, because a 2TB HDD costs 4.7k while a 30 GB Kingston one costs 4k. The kingston is slow, but the intel ones available here is slow. One of the main advantages for laptops is that portability is increased, because the drive will have no moving parts, so no more head crashes. In benchmarking it has been found that even the slowest SSDs are better for everyday use than the fastest 10k WD Raptor drives. So, that might justify the price. Another potential use for an SSD, is using it for the /, /usr, /var/ tm, usr/local, /opt, /srv,etc,. and have /home and other Data storage partitions in a HDD. This is especially useful for servers, where /var on the SSD, makes things quite fast. Also, swap can be kept on the HDD, to reduce wear leveling. I think ext4 with noatime, and /tmp and /var/tmp as RAM Drives, would a lso reduce wear leveling. Yet to try btrfs... Even on a HDD, according to Linus himself, noatime is a good fs option. As a rule, in my all my linux boxes, I edit fstab in such a way, all my partitions, except swap have the noatime option. I also include, two RAM Drives, /tmp and /var/tmp. This is because data in both the partitions, don't need to be stored after a restart. With Regards, --Kumaran R ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

Hi, The proprietary drivers for ATi are generally a waste. If you're on F15, I recommend you to use the nouveau drivers, which are better than the ATi drvers. Also, if you're installing ATi drivers make sure, you build a rpm package and then install it through yum/rpm so that uninstall is easier. Hi, As we all know, the Laptops distributed by the TN govt. is going to have only non-free software. So as a counter measure I had an idea of making posters, banners, hand-outs and brochures, explaining the ill-effects of using windows and the costs involved. Can people who are good in GIMP or Inkscape design such things so that people can distribute it when a laptop distribution ceremony is going on? Hi, I have a small requirement, I'd like to set up a video stream in my school, from one room to another. It doesn't need to be streaming technically, as it'll be only a short-term arrangement, for the culturals. I thought of using X over SSH and using cheese to get the video out-put from the webcam. [Ilugc] MS Cloud operations in TN
Hi ILUGC, I guess it is time for ILUGC to start another campaign against the TN govt. When the neighboring state of Kerala is doing so much with Open Source, why is TN govt. falling into a trap with MS? (Refer yesterday's hindu: http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/tamil-nadu/article2967682.ece) IMO, the last thing that we would want is for our state to fall into a vendor lock-in with MS. I guess it would take a fraction of the cost if we develop TN. govt. its own private cloud. Anyway, I think we first need to tell TN govt. that what they are doing is wrong. Any ideas on how to go about with this? With Regards, ~~Kumaran R ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

I don't know much about the server hardware requirements. But IMO, you can have the Desktops in this configuration: CPU+Board: Intel Atom Desktop Kit - Rs. 3400 RAM - Hynix LapTop RAM 1 GB - Rs. 475 No Hard-Disk Some Case ~ Rs.1000 We had a similar issue in my school, and we had to dispose of around 15 thin-clients. [Ilugc] TN Govt. Free Laptop Review
Hi ILUGC! Yesterday I got the pleasure of using one of the TN govt. laptops. I think we all remember the struggle whch we had to take to make the laptop a dual-boot one. And it has paid off (atleast partially.) Hardware Specs: Intel Pentium Dual Core@2.3 GHz, 2 GB DDR3 RAM (upgradable to 8GB), 320 GB Western Digital SATA 2.5" HDD, 14.1" 1366x768 LCD Screen, etc,. On the whole the laptop doesn't feel cheap. Its light in weight thanks to the absence of a DVD drive and Wifi. The keyboard is not upto Lenovo standards, but it is still much better than most laptop keyboards. I'm typing this email in this keyboard, and it offers good feedback.. The display is a 14" 1366x768. It has good brightness but poor viewing angles and lots of glare, thanks to the glossy finish. The lack of wifi is a huge disappointment. The battery lasted just under 3 hours (2:58) while doing light web-browsing and playing music (max. brightness and max. volume). Overall, the design is good with a good textured feel. It feels solid to hold, and doesn't have lots of flex. It has a dual boot with Windows 7 Professional and BOSS GNU/Linux. I haven't tested Windows 7 much. It has a Office 2010 Starter Edition and Microsoft Security Essentials (I doubt if that is an anti-virus.) It has few educational apps too. Most of the hard-disk space (~200 GB) is allocated for it. It logs in by default as a root user. The BOSS Linux 4.0, has GNOME 2.30 and OpenOffice.org 3.2. It has few educational apps like Thirukural and Tamil Keyboard. It also has the TN govt. textbooks for classes 11 and 12 in .pdf format. I had to update 8 packages after connecting to the internet. They have just shifted the top panel to the bottom to make it more "windows-like". Overall, BOSS works fine and fast.. It has iceweasel and icedove for web-browsing and mail. Re: [Ilugc] TN Govt. Free Laptop Review
Hi ILUGC! IMHO, I think it would have been better for ELCOT to have skipped Windows and instead put that money into a WiFi chipset. The educational apps on BOSS Linux seem much lesser than the ones in Windows. I think that GNOME 2.3 could have looked a lot better. Or, they should have used Ubuntu LTS/ Linux Mint. Anyway, now that it is being rolled out, I guess it would be good for us if we start online spoken tutorials on how to use BOSS instead of Windows. I am planning on making a custom distro based on Edubuntu LTS (12.04) or something similar, for installation on this laptop. Any ideas? What about a 1-day class for this, wherever it gets distributed? With regards, ~~Kumaran R -- With Regards, ~~Kumaran R ___ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
Re: [Ilugc] TN Govt. Free Laptop Review
I was thinking of the same thing. But I don't think I'd be able to check that, because this is a borrowed laptop, and opening the case might not be acceptable. I want the people who own one of these to find that out. Also, I wonder as to why the BOSS people have decided to go with their own repos. I think it would have been better to use the upstream Debian repos instead. The BOSS repos are out-dated, for eg. Chromium is in version 7. Re: [Ilugc] TN Govt. Free Laptop Review
Thank you to all for the replies. I am not trying to eradicate MS or anything. Although I would like to. But in reality, it is nearly impossible. It is possible in a closed environment, like an office, where the IT manager is a FOSS enthusiast. But as far as school students are concerned, it is extremely difficult to remove MS, although I believe it is possible with the school's help. Yes, I agree that 95% of the students are computer users rather than learners. But GNU/Linux today, especially distros like Ubuntu are targeted at the end-users rather than learners. With my observation, I've seen quite a number of students who are interested to learn and use GNU/Linux without any exam or curriculum whatsoever. A recent trend that I've observed among school students is that some of them have taken GNU/Linux as a status symbol. i.e. They are proud of using it. And most of these students are not CS students. They're mostly bio/commerce/economics students. If this trend continues, I don't think it would be necessary to have GNU/Linux in the curriculum, with exams and force students to use GNU/Linux. Another problem with forcing students to learn GNU/Linux, is that they would only view it as another burden rather than a OS that would ease their computer use. This is mostly because, any curriculum based on GNU/Linux introduces students with the command-line. And most students are afraid of the command line. This would make them view GNU/Linux as a step backward from Windows rather than a step-forward. So, I think it would be best to give the students GNU/Linux, and let them explore by themselves, probably with a set of Spoken tutorial DVDs for help. Re: [Ilugc] TN Govt. Free Laptop Review
Hi, Yes it is an incorrect assumption made by them. But most of them still do it. I have personally introduced around 30 of my friends to GNU/Linux, and most of them still don't use the command line. IMO, GNU/Linux is not only for CS guys but also for the general public. And I don't prefer forcing them to use the command-line. I've seen many of my friends who could have become interested in CS but for their introduction to C in their 9th and 10th grade. This scares most of them away from CS. I also believe that there is more to GNU/Linux than the command line. For eg. I want schools to teach computers as tools for education rather than using them as a subject on its own right. We've lots of educational tools like GCompris, Stellarium, Step, etc,. I don't think that the command line would be necessary to make them use this. I personally love the command-line, but I don't think it would be right for most people, who just want their computers to help them, rather than wanting to learn how it works. For those who are interested in learning more, can do so with Linux, unlike Windows, which prevents them from learning. Re: [Ilugc] Fwd: [fosscomm] Tally Wrapper
Hi, I do agree that there are many Open Source alternatives to Tally and GNUCash. I would recommend GNU Cash for SMEs and larger enterprises should use the server based ones like OpenERP. Most of the failiures with ERP implementation is because of practical problems, which often result due to the laziness of the people who are using it. Yes it can do wonders. People in accounting department of most places, don't like changing their way of working. And since they handle cash, no body wants any delays from / because of them. The problem with Tally, IMO is that it is not open source. If it was, then not having a GNU/Linux version wouldn't be much of a problem as anyone can easily port it to GNU/Linux. Tally because of its closed source nature cannot be as secure as GNUCash or OpenERP or the other OSS alternatives. This is a situation where the concern is not about the money being spent. But it is more about security and ease of use. Again the data being encrypted doesn't depend on the software, but on the tunneling. SSH can come to the rescue here. Ultimately, we need companies that give guarenteed implementation, maintance and 24/7 support for Open Source ERPs like OpenERP and GNU Cash. Hi IMO, Alice, Bob, Carol, Eve, Rama, Ravan, Sita are all fictional characters. In this example, they have been used just for names. And names don't matter, it can be X,Y or Z. What actually matters is the way it is taught. Using a simple real-life example using 3 PCs in a network for demonstrating evesdropping and man in the middle attack will be much better than using names. Here IP addresses are much more useful than any other names. Replacing English names with Indian ones won't make any difference. So I would suggest you to take a kutti survey in your neighbourhood to find out more about which 3G dongle will be the best for you. [Ilugc] Call for developers
Hi ILUGC! We (Kumaran and Dr. Easwar) are excited to announce that we have achieved a stable base in AuShadha development. The current development stage of AuShadha has largely been the effort of Dr. Easwar himself. AuShadha is an Open Source Electronic Medical Records (EMR) & Public Health Management System for Small Clinics. It might be even suited for speciality medical practice after some customisation. It is being developed with Python, Django and Dojo. There are many, great Open Source EMRs that are available, but most of them lack a good front-end. The purpose of AuShadha is to provide a state-of-the-art, visually appealing, easy-to-use intuitive front-end interface that is suited for traditional desktop interfaces. This is the first step in creating a polished open-source EMR. Look out for more UI improvements to come in the future. We strongly believe that any open-source project is only as good as its community. To help improve AuShadha beyond the current state, we thought it would be fun to invite anyone who is interested to develop and contribute to it along with us. We would also like AuShadha to benefit from user-inputs and feature requests. Check out the current state of AuShadha demo here.<http://dreaswar.com/2013/01/02/hosted-live-demo-for-aushadha-open-source-electronic-medical-records-project/> To start developing and contributing to AuShadha, please join our mailing-list here<https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/aushadha> . [Ilugc] [Call for Devs] AuShaDha Call for Python / Django Developers
Hi! The AuShadha project in association with Kanini is proud to announce the opportunity for you to take part in AuShadha's development. AuSdhadha is an up-coming Open Source Electronic Medical Records and Hospital Management System. Unlike the other EMR/HMS software, AuShadha has almost solely been developed by doctors for doctors. This makes AuShadha much better suited for real-world use by doctors since it has been tailored for them specifically. AuShadha has also been developed with a keen sense of the best possible front-end usability and it shows when you use the software. Currently. the doctors have mostly finished all the needed medical modules. They need some help with the non-medical modules like Billing, In-Patient management, Pharmacy, etc,. This call for developers is mainly focused on those unfinished modules. Developers can directly get involved in creating or extending the pluggable Python / Django modules for the AuShadha project.
