Re: [ilugd] Bowing before strategic charities!

2005-12-20 Thread Tom Cooper
Hi all,
To add to this story. When the South African Government went open
source, Microsoft offered free software to all the schools. All that was
needed was to fill in an application form. That fact was widely
publicised. However, what was never publicised was the fact that very
few schools, if any, received it.

However, the Linux community managed to lash back in a very big way.
Mark Shuttleworth, bless his soul, sponsors the tuxLab program through
the Shuttleworth Foundation whereby schools are given free computer
labs. This started in the Western Cape and has expanded to my stamping
ground, the Eastern Cape. So now it is headed for the interior of the
country and is being rolled out in Johannesburg and the surrounding
areas. It has also been earmarked for Nepad, so it will be rolled out
all over Africa very soon.

Also, Freedom toasters are being rolled out right across the country,
which allow you to burn the distro of your choice at no charge.

So, here at least Microsoft are getting a run for their money.

By the way, should anybody be interested in the complete tuxLab
installation software, I am sure I can make a plan to get it there or
place the iso's on a download site. I liase fairly closely with the guys
from the Shuttleworth Foundation.

Regards,

Tom

[ilugd] Fw: multi gateway system

2005-12-20 Thread SWAPNIL
Dear All,

Our network has a Linux system as Gateway Server with two Ethernet cards.
One is configured to the internal IP address and another is configured to
external IP address provided by VSNL.

The current bandwidth is 512 kbps, we are looking to increase our bandwidth
to 1 mbps.

Can we add one more Ethernet card in the server and configure it to external
IP address of new broadband line ?
Also can you clarify which gateway will be automatically taken by the System

If anybody is facing similar problem, please help me to configure my network

Hi,
Sorry to piggyback on Supreet's post, but I seem to have lost the
original message in this thread. At the ILUG-D meeting on the 25th,
I would also like to have an open discussion on the following items:
  1. Mentoring student programmers in FOSS: for me, the special
interest is in areas related to Indic computing, but others could
have different areas of interest. A first need would be to identify
projects that are of immediate interest to ILUG-D folk, and
discuss how best to get other people involved.
  2. Better collaboration with other LUGs, the National Resource
Centre for FOSS (NRCF), and other parties.
  3. Helping organizations migrate to Linux.
I would be glad to prepare a short presentation outlining these areas,
but getting involved in any of these would require a concerted effort
on the part of ILUG-D members.

Gora

Re: [ilugd] Making an Interactive CD

Hi,
I would suggest that you use LaTex to generate the document (CD). and then
use latex2html to generate the html; hyperlinking/crossreferences etc are all

Hi
Am reposting this mail , because am not sure if it reached the list the
first time (as there were no responses)

Was trying to figure out what all it takes to make an interactive CD.

Was Using Open Office writer / web to save pages as HTML and was
creating hyperlinks to a set of folders, images and other HTML pages.

So are there any guides to designing a simple interactive cd with the
following requistes

1. HTML based index pages

2. Images and links to bigger images

3. Links to Documents as PDF files (so how will the pdf files open)

and how to make sure that all these links work on the final cd

So what would be the simple tools and techniques that would help make /
design CD's. Is there a better software than OOo , but as simple.

Some of the problems I have faced till now are

1. Was trying to make a hyperlink to a pdf file in an HTMl file.

When I am editing the html file in open office and try and open the link
to the pdf file I get the following error message.

No Corresponding External Application could be found for the given file
type.
Please Check the Open Office.org settings

But when I open the same link using a browser the link offers to open or
save.

2. After making hyperlinks I am unable to edit them

3. Some of the images I used in the HTML files are Jpeg and png ,
however when I copy the whole set of files to another location the png
images remain but the jpeg images show up as just a small nothing
icon. So should I use only png's

Any solutions to this.

Will appreciate any pointers and advice

thanks

Yes, you can do that as I replied earlier.

You can use ip tool to configure routing on your system and treat both
the links equally or in a given proportion.

For more details check out the HOW TO at http://lartc.org/. You can set

Sorry, this was supposed to be part of the summary that I was
going to write up on the discussion with the National
Resource Centre for FOSS (NRCF) folk at foss.in. I will try to
do that, but the important part was that NRCF has some 50
colleges interested, and can probably fund a concerted effort.

* the place itself - i.e. place of interaction with the students
(whether we talk to a local college and ask them to give us

Yes, this is something that needs to be done. But, in the
longer term, I think that this will have to move to an online
development model.

* expression of interest by various members willing to take
responsibility for specific projects (i.e. those with

This is the other important thing. We need to have
commitments that people follow up on. It will require a
significant amount of time, at least in the beginning. Given
the current educational culture in India, mentoring will be
a pain. For my side, I am willing to mentor anyone working
on a task related to Indian language computing.
Thanks for bringing this up Mary. I would like to have these issues
discussed at the meeting.

Don't know about OpenOffice, but links work well in LaTeX. You add
a \label{whatever} at the location of the link target and a
\ref{whatever} where you want the link. latex2html handles the
proper conversions for you.

What is the NRCF about , what resources does it provide

I have been meaning to write a short summary of our
discussions with Prof. Krishnan and others of Anna
University-KBC and NRCF. These have happened at foss.in
and elsewhere, and I believe that the NRCF could play a
very significant role in FOSS activities in India. I have been
travelling since the meet, and haven't had time to do the
summary, but will sit down and do it tonight, as I think that
it is important for the community to take advantage of what
the NRCF is offering.

We had a brief discussion on this issue at foss.in. All were
agreed that such migrations should be supported by the
FOSS community. We even agreed to try and ensure that
each LUG helps in at least one complete migration per
year. At the meeting there wasn't anyone with actual
experience in such migrations, but a couple of important
points raised were that the initial impetus should come
from within the organization seeking to migrate, and that
for sustainability, such efforts need to be funded.

Also take a look at nvu (http://www.nvu.com/), a WYSIWYG HTML editor.

When links are meant to be used in a browser, why are you trying to visit them
within OOo?

Try to see that you use relative links to the images and other contents.

Are you unable to edit hyperlinks within OOo itself? Try keeping your cursor
in the middle of a hyperlink text, and then click the hyperlink button.

 Hi,

I'm using Anjuta 1.2.4, have a project directory with $PROJ/include
$PROJ/src where respective .h .cc files are present. But while doing
make, anjuta reports error that it cannot find my .h files. Do i
have to tell anjuta to look for my headers in $PROJ/include or will it
do by default? BTW, when creating the project, it itself created the
include directory added the headers there.

Anjuta project menu has a option configure project. In that add any
includes directories that is needed for project.

I will try to cover this and other build issues in anjuta on 25th. Do
come for the meeting

 Thanks
