While this sounds quite interesting, would someone in the know
care to summarise the pros and cons of this vis-a-vis OpenMoko?
Besides the obvious one of Android having the backing of Google.

Therefore use postfix as it is guaranteed to always be maintained and

I don't agree with someone. Some distros (like Slackware & Debian) are
more purist-friendly then others so-called "user-friendly" ones (like
Ubuntu).
Facing difficulties, whether sooner or later, entirely depends on
your experience with linux as whole, and not on your distro choice.

Your favourite distro is best for you. BTW, I cannot still understand why
"upgrade gives you a very different system than a fresh install".
I've never took the upgrade route, so I am curious about i pros and cons.

Unfortunately, No. Your PerfectPhone will be perfect in the same manner it
is right now.
Android-enabled phones will be shipped by manufacturers only after second
half of next year.
Android is a platform, and a lot of mobile manufacturers will be giving out
Android phones!

Not OT, because this means that mobile shall be *freed* finally, with
opensource applications
and development framework. That means you'll be able to hack your mobile in
the same way
you hack your linux. (Google will free mobiles ...
http://tuxplayground.blogspot.com/2007/11/google-will-free-mobiles.html)

A good OpenSource framework was missing from the mobile industry. Even if
some
frameworks are present (like Qutopia, OpenMoko), they'll still take some
time to reach ordinary users.
Android has the advantage of "Open Handset Alliance", which has some big key
players of mobile industry.

[ilugd] Android SDK Released

2007-11-12 Thread Kazim Zaidi
Google has released Android SDK under Open Handset Alliance today. The SDK
has got emulators and complete environment for development for the Android
phones.

Android is the open source system that shall run a variety of phones from
next year. Google and a lot of other key players in mobile industry have
come forward to develop, manufacture and market a completely free opensource
mobile platform (and mobiles).
See Open Handset Alliance website.

You can start application development for Android (a
screenshot)
in your own very sweet language Java. Google has spent a lot of time writing
Android in Java. Android has got all libraries like GSM, Bluetooth,
Messaging, and anything you can imagine for your phone.

More, there's a $10 million challenge from Google (starting January) to
develop an application for Android. They'll pay you $25000 even before you
start the project.

I agree - if you check international mailing lists, you find lots of
grammatical mistakes from non-english speakers. No one bothers about
it unless the meaning is not clear. And even then, there are no

And not only on mailing lists - I have had a job application saying
'i wan 2 work in ur valble institution, plz grant me interview'. (He
got the job, but only after his application was reworded appropriately).

Upgrading takes a few hours if you have a good/cheap internet
connection. I understand that you can use the alternate-ubuntu-cd to
upgrade without needing to download everything while upgrading. I
haven't tried this myself though.

In my experience, upgrades do not normally break. And if they do,
Ubuntu fora provide plenty of support.

In fact, I have had a situation when Feisty did not install, but I was
able to upgrade from the previous version.

[ilugd] freenet6 - an IPv6 tunnel client packaged for Fedora 7

Hi,

I've packaged freenet6 tunnel client[1] for Fedora 7[2]. I've only
packaged it for AMD64 architecture, anyone running IA32 can simply
build the RPM from SRPM.

Using freenet6 tunnel client, one can connect to the IPv6 internet.
This client runs in two modes, 'host' mode where user receives a single
/128 address and 'router' mode, where user is delegated an /64 or /48
prefix, which can be advertised in his network providing IPv6
connectivity to all members of network. One needs to register with
http://go6.net/ to recieve a static allocation. If trying to connect
anonymously (i.e. without registration or simply with no explicit
configuration) one will receive a dynamic IPv6 address.

The mails which we (ilugd subscribers) recieve from ilugd list are
also relayed from an IPv6 network.

Users of later versions of Fedora, can simply rebuild the RPM from the
SRPM provided. The freenet6 is also available in repositories of other
distros also, e.g. in FreeBSD ports available at "net/freenet6", in
Gentoo portage available at "net-misc/freenet6", etc.

inotify will throw events, one has to listen to it. I think OP just
wanted to get latest created file in a directory, not to listen for
files creation events.

Sahil, did you get the problem solved. A friend of mine today asked the same

question, and so I was able to run his MTNL modem using USB.

You may've to try
   /sbin/modprobe cdc-ether

And if you see the message "usb 2-2: No configuration chosen from ...
choices"
in dmesg output, then try configuration 1,
   echo -n 1 > /sys/bus/usb/devices/2-2/bConfigurationValue
Replace 2-2 with the actual number you see in dmesg output.

Using these commands, a new interface eth1 was enabled as
CDC USB Ethernet.

Well, I quoted that from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases . They assert
that LTS is for 3 years.

Also, my experience has been that in case of upgrading (as against fresh

You're absolutely right. Like Niyam, I don't upgrade at all. I would do
a fresh installation of Feisty or Grumpy. Upgrades have not been very
successful, many break. And even when upgrading you've to download
a lot. So why not just have a new installation.

Fresh installation would mean that I have to configure all the

For me, the configuration takes about a week. To have a list of
packages, I usually
- (On old system) dpkg --get-selections > ~/myinstalls
- Save the myinstalls file
- ((On new system) dpkg --set-selections < myinstalls
- (On new system) sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade
This relieves me from the pain of reinstalling everything again
manually. Hope it helps someone.

Yet again, here is a Ruby one liner:

ruby -e 'puts Dir["./**/*"].delete_if { |f| File.directory?(f) }.sort_by {
|f| File.mtime(f) } [ -1 ]'

Also that it works recursively.

The problem is, that people who've not been familiar to linux mailing lists
and IRC rooms, often consider replacing "you" with "u" as the smartest way
to talk.
But communities like LUGs and developer-groups hate the usage of l33t-sp33k.
Instead of ignoring or pulling legs, a simple reminder about correct usage
of
english and a link to Usage guidelines should be enough in most of the
cases.

What does "support" refer to? That Ubuntu provides security patches
etc. for this period?

The problem still remains that a lot of software gets outdated sooner
than the "long-term" and later versions accessible only through
backports.

I would not want to use 6.06 until 2009, when later and hugely
improved versions of various packages and ubuntu itself are available.

A user has two options: use a long-term version which has a
release cycle of 3/5 years or use short-term versions which have a
release cycle of 6 months.

Let me reiterate my view: Ubuntu needs medium-term releases with a
more liberal upgrading policy in between these releases. These
medium-term releases should replace the present 6-monthly releases.

Also, it was mentioned in a post as part of this thread how an upgrade
gives you a system very different from a fresh install. That is indeed
true and, in my view, a weakness that Ubuntu needs to attend
to. Debian would be better on this. You will never need to do a fresh
install of a debian system because upgrade is not as good as a fresh
install. My intention is not to get into a debian v/s ubuntu debate.

If you want the last file whose inode was modified (which is usually the
same as the last file created):

ls -c | head -1

P.S. *nix has ``directories'', not ``folders'' ;)

I'd disagree here -- my primary complaint is with SMS-spelling, not with
the quality of English. I'm only a spelling Nazi, not a Grammar- or
Language-Nazi :)

If your English is bad, it doesn't matter -- please post to the list and
your message will be read and hopefully answered. However, whether you
use good English or bad, please do NOT use ``u'' for ``you'' and
similar abbreviations -- that will just put off people who may

Well, you can't get the time of creation of a file, as that is
not stored. You can get various other times, such as the time
of modification, time of access (unless this has been turned off
at the filesystem level), and time of modification of file status.

Eek, try,
 ls -lr | tail -1
for time of last access. See "ls -t", and "ls -c" for other times.

I could be wrong, and if I am, please do correct me. LTS is supported
for 18 months. Releases in between are supported for 6 months (isn't
it). Also, my experience has been that in case of upgrading (as against fresh
installation), you have to upgrade to the immediate next release. So
you would not be able to upgrade from dapper to feisty directly. You
would have to first upgrade to edgy and then to feisty. Similarly, you
could upgrade to gutsy only from feisty. There is no way that I know
of upgrading from edgy to gutsy directly.

Fresh installation would mean that I have to configure all the
software all over again: postfix, mysql, apacheIt would be a
really long list, and would take me quite a few days to implement.

For now, I am okay upgrading every six months.

Somewhat unrelated: I recently upgraded our department server from debian
sarge to debian etch without any trouble and almost without
discontinuing its services. It was really nice to see it happen so
smoothly!!

1. What language you ask your question in is very important.
2. the above text is not easily understandable and is more hilarious than
helpful.
"I will be advice" is a case in point.
3. Please read your mail once after typing or show it to some one else so
your potential audience is not
inconvenienced
4. Kenneth is right in saying that unless you improve your English your
search for answers is not going to be easy.

One final point he did not say RTFM or ask you to google so there is no need
to flame him.

If you're participating in a FREE forum on which you ask for help, at no
charge, is it too much to ask that you adhere to the rules of that
forum? Please read the mailing list guidelines on SMS- and l33t-sp33k
usage in this mailing list.

Apart from the guidelines, I personally avoid answering any questions
asked by someone who can't be bothered to spell out the question in a
form that makes it easy for me to read. If you're writing only for
yourself, please go ahead and use whatever language you choose. If you
are writing for other people to read, please make it easy for them to
read it.

postfix - unlike qmail - is foss, even if Wietse doesnt do something,
one can tweak it oneself.

I think we have to try to resolve issue's if any one in trouble
instead of leg pulling and this is not the serious issue whether he is
using abbreviation or complete words.
As per my opinion --

I recently moved a sizeable system from qmail to postfix. While qmail
is a fine MTA, we were running into its limitations. The main
objection I have to it is that it's stagnant. The last official
release was over 10 years ago, and any advances in MTA technology since
then has to be implemented as a patch. This includes SMTP AUTH, SSL,
SQL aliasing, and many of the common anti-spam tactics. After a
while, the whole thing gets quite unwieldy, especially when you have
conflicting patches. We also had large problems with qmail's
"everything goes in the queue" architecture. A vanilla qmail install
accepts every mail that is sent to it, even those that are to
non-existent users. No mail is rejected at smtp time. This means
that the queue is always full of bounce message to non-existent
senders. Also, when you get hit with a mail bomb, the messages in the
queue end up delaying new incoming messages, even after the mail-bomb
has stopped. Performance on the queue disk can become a substantial
bottleneck. Still, it's a fine mailer once you get your mind around
how it works.

We switched to postfix primarily because I wanted a MTA that was under
active development and qmail has limited support for LMTP. Postfix
does have it's quirks, and Wietse is sometimes less than willing to
add new things to postfix that people want. However, they do
eventually get added, once Wietse comes up with a system that he
likes.
