Now that you are looking at PHP CMS , I would strongly recommend
typo3. especially securitywise it is a really strong contender and it
has a very wide range of plugins and very very extensible.

you presume wrong on both counts. Plone is a highly mature and highly

When you discuss a moving target like a reasonably often-released CMS

future version.

Re: [ilugd] suggest a CMS

2008-05-01 Thread Sharad Birmiwal
I tried out a few CMSs when I had to started with making a website for
my department (it is still work under progress and not published yet).

I did try Joomla, MODx, and a few more CMS (I have the names on my lab
PC) but we finally stuch to MODx. We foudn it to be quite configurable
(I'm sure others are as well), graphically and otherwise.

I can't really say much about other options but I would suggest MODx
because I found it pretty easy to modify its code (to adapt to our
requirements) and also modifying some of the add-ons (like
EasyNews/EasyEvents or something).

It is also pretty easy to make submission forms (for surveys/feedback etc).

Oh, forgot the important thing which is that our requirement was that
faculty/staff/and even students should be able to manage content (MODx
supports that but I will also confess that giving the initial roles is
a tad-bit confusing though it seems logical once you get it going). We
did not want a website where a guest visitor should be able to
modify/add content and that is what I have been able to turn it into
(just had to disable a plugin and make a few changes in the template
(skin/theme)).

Another factor to keep in mind is the programming language you are
comfortable with. My suggestion would be to choose a CMS that is in
your programming language of choice, since that would make
changing/fixing/writing plugins for it easier.

If you are worried about security, you can put apache in a chroot jail
and run it with suexec module. Not that this would gurantee you
anything, but it would protect you against script kiddie attacks.

Hi,
Joomla is good, we used ezPublish sometime back and that was good as
well. If it ain't a very crucial site (by crucial I mean it's not hosting
some kind of service which if hacked can result in huge monetary loss) then
you can also try out Drupal, I don't know why but Drupal seems to be the
easiest and most hackprone CMS around. ezPublish seems a bit daunting at
first as it requires one to understand it's language syntax and all, but the
end result is quite good.

Drupal out of the box is more difficult and does not look as good has

 Hi,
Joomla is good, we used ezPublish sometime back and that was
 good
 as
well. If it ain't a very crucial site (by crucial I mean it's not
 hosting
some kind of service which if hacked can result in huge monetary
 loss)
 then
you can also try out Drupal, I don't know why but Drupal seems
 to be
 the
easiest and most hackprone CMS around. ezPublish seems a bit
 daunting
 at
first as it requires one to understand it's language syntax and
 all,
 but
 the
 end result is quite good.

 Mayank

Plone certainly is very good. Good for community and good for
enterprise as well. However, since you mentioned plone can I clarify
some of my doubts on this:

Plone is based on Zope which in turn is based on Python. Zope is
locked today on Python 2.4, where most distributions have moved to
Python 2.5. Zope development 2.9(??) is being done more like a Python
Module/package than as an engine, which was the case earlier. Zope3.0
seems to be a disconnect from past. May be I reached a wrong
conclusion, but would like to see opinion of others in this regard.

Re: [ilugd] suggest a CMS

2008-04-30 Thread sonika tyagi
Thank you all for your suggestions. I am still reading stuff to decide on
which CMS to use.

Someone said Drupal is hackprone... and yet Drupal is being recommended over
Joomla!!! Security is an important concern to me, so would prefer a CMS
which is more secure.

I was looking at the old version of the website I am working on- It was
developed using asp.net... I was wondering if is possible to import the old
content/structure into Joomla/Drupal/other.

you presume wrong on both counts. Plone is a highly mature and highly
