gimme a day or two, i'll try to dig up the contact details of the other

Since CAUCE seems to have an idea what spam is, we can ask them to file

i think that's a good idea. earlier, i had seen some contact cgi-form on

if you haven't noted, the mainstream newspapers and magazines these days

  ;-)

OK, you must be referring to the Slimes of India :). That is not a
mainstream newspaper, its a pop paper now, pandering to page 3 type
 people. Just my NSHO :)

more seriously, news is commodity and its actual media is optional: sms,
tv, radio, google-news, to print newspaper. so no surprise newspapers
are trying to redefine their role. we live in the world of concurrent
media, as no one medium cancels out any other.

I second that idea. But I am not sure how mainstream LFY is.

but niyam will figure out a way of taking this mainstream. he could also
do a typical job of also yacking about it in his larger-scale seminars,
college/university talks, and starting some grass-roots movement.

i request people here to email NGOs like Centre for Science Environment,
the guys who publish down to earth magazine.

Can you post URL of these organizations ? I will contact them. This
weekend I will make a email explaining about spam and using that as a
template contact these organizations. Let us hope for a positive response.

yes, dug out their url too.http://www.cseindia.org/
you'll find contact details, and further that of downtoearth on their
site.

you know, apart from these methods, we are not looking at how to use
technology to stop this. any ideas? how could we fortify existing tools
or make them even more lethal for battling such spam, such that it
disables the perpetrators. or, can we think of a bold new idea?

i like vipul's cloudmark idea.

LL, if we start a eff chapter in India we will have to do everything
from scratch, personally I vote against it. With this in mind, I did a
search on anti spam law india on google and came across Inidan chapter
of CAUCE (http://www.india.cauce.org/). Check out their Got Spammed?

It appears that there are no anti-spam and anti-telemarketing laws in
India. Do you think we can put a PIL against them ? I am willing to

However a PIL would require that people are aware of this nuisance and

U.S. Army Warns Microsoft To Back Off

[0]declan writes My CNET News colleague Ina Fried has written an
interesting article today about how [1]the U.S. Army has told
Microsoft
to stop sending free CD-ROMs of Office 2003 to government employees.
In
what's effectively a cease and desist order, the Army said: 'Your
offer
of free software places our employees and soldiers in jeopardy of
unknowingly committing a violation of the ethics rules and
regulations
to which they have taken an oath to uphold.' Whoops! Perhaps this is
Microsoft's latest way to [2]fight free software at the Pentagon.
Remember that just 8 months ago, the Army [3]paid $471 million for
Microsoft licenses.

You are missing the point. If you are planning an email marketing blitz
you do not go about searching for individual emails. You will buy them
from email harvesters. I get offers like millions of emails in a single
a spreadsheet for Rs.1600 only almost regularly. (Will post one if I
get it today).
A technique common in Delhi is to collect the emails of the college
going people. If you attend a college fest, you will find stalls put up
by NIIT, Aptech, other computer institutes giving out flyers and
asking students for their emails and address. The poor students are then
flooded with telephone calls and emails (and of course more flyers).

I found your email ID listed on 400+ linux related pages using various
searches on google.
I use this email id (i.e. the hotpop one) for mailing lists only. Hence
a bit of spam on this ID is expected. However, the amkette spam came to
me on my official email ID and that email ID was the one I had given out
at LinuxAsia.
