I'm very familiar with OpenOffice, but it's not compatible with 10.1. I had no idea what version, exactly, of iMac I had b/c I bought it second hand from a guy who got it from his father in law and put it away in a box. I don't think it has a DVD drive, so there's a limit to the upgrades I can do. also, there's a financial limit to how much I can spend ($0). I was thinking of trying a dual boot, just to see if I could get some more modern functionality (openoffice) out of linux. This is basically a backup computer I got cheap and want to get the most out of. I know little about it, but I am having fun learning. For a supercharged text editor look at TextWrangler. (seehttp://www.versiontracker.com). For word processing look at Open Office. It's a free software suite roughly comparable (and roughly compatible) with M$ Office or AppleWorks. I don't have a link for Open Office, it hasn't been officially released (last I heard) in English for Tiger (but Bulgarian is). I have an early G3 iMac, Bondi or Blueberry, I'm not sure... slot-loading 4Gb HD 256Mb RAM 350MHz Had OS 9.1 if I remember correctly (got it secondhand about 5-6 years ago) which I upped to 9.2.2 at first, and then 2 years ago loaded Panther (OSX 10.3.9). Also have the same-era G3 Clamshell laptop (so-called 'toilet seat' haha) with roughly same specs... replaced those with G4 and G5 machines over the last 2 years, but still have the G3s Ikea'd in plain view, I swap them on and off my 4-mac lan (which includes my trusty Power Mac 8600 MacOS 8.6) occasionally. Absolutely... I still have every Mac I've ever bought... all in plain view... since 1996 I have 12, including a Mac Classic which I got for $10 and never used it. Because they don't have the room to store them. I sure don't. Just like I don't have any place to store or display my old Macs. (I even had an original 68K Macintosh!) So, they all go to the thrift store. Only old one I've kept is my Snow G3, as it is still serviceable, but having a devil of a time finding a place to put it. Just upgraded to a G4 iLamp, and I'm thinking of using the G3 out in the shed as a glorified mp3 player. Still would have to find a place to put it in there, and hooked up to the stereo. Those can take up to 1GB of RAM, and run 10.4.11 without jumping through any hoops. I can't vouch for 10.1, but in OS 9 you can check Apple System Profiler and it'll tell you a lot of info about your computer, and of course looking underneath like Paul suggested is easy, although turning the darn thing around is a literal pain. And, once upgraded to OS 10.4.11, I suggest trying out NeoOffice instead of OpenOffice --it's a version of OpenOffice ported to OS X that doesn't require X11. Have fun! The door on the back would be for a VGA mirroring connection. The door on the bottom gives you access to install an Airport card or memory (as well as the SMC reset and PRAM battery). If the WD 500Gb is a full size IDE HD, (and not a laptop drive, or SATA,) then yes. It's really easy to swap drives in the G4 towers. It's a 400Mhz. According to what I could dig up, it can handle up to 1GB of RAM. If you're considering a dual boot, look at installing fink or macports to run linux programs instead. I eventually got a version of Debian to run on a G3 imac, but they usually boot to a black screen, and you have to mess around with some config files to see a working desktop. Yep, that's exactly what happened to me last night. I'll look into those options and see what I can get to run. Thanks for the important info Elliott Just hooked up the G3 iMac. old puters
I'm getting out of the old Apple business. I have an iMac 400 cd/dvd, an iMc 600 cd and a eMac 750 cd.dvd. They all work fine. The first two are Panther 10.3.9; the eMac is Tiger 10.5 The only issue is that the eMac doesn't seem to think that there is anything on its disk, even though it operates OK; I don't know hoew to fix this. The disk properties show 0 kb. They are free, gratis and no charge to anyone who wants to pick them (it?) up in Rochester, NY. They'd be perfect for a kid or as a second unit. I don't have the time or energy to list them on eBay or to pack them.
