[info-tech] Ideas for Desktop Video Conferencing
Anyone out there experimenting with desktop video conferencing. I would like to start experimenting with using this internally for staff but it needs to be simple to use with control on the client side of things so that they don't feel like they are being spied on. I know there is Microsoft Netmeeting and Windows Communicator but don't need all that just something simple to use and cheap that allow multiple people to face to face meet via video. We got our first three this past summer. We have the 680i's and I really like them. The teachers that have them really like them and use them a lot. They have been giving presentations to other teachers within our district and we are ordering quite a few more this summer. I agree that there isn't a classroom that couldn't benefit from it. The kids even love to get up in front of the class now, because they'll get to draw on the smart board. We also have a older Mimio (that one teacher really likes!). I like the Smart boards, and so do the teachers who have them, but I am not terribly impressed with the software that runs them. A little confusing, stuff changes too much when there are updates, and it seems to hang up too often. I do like the touch-sensitive nature of the Smart boards (you can use your fingers), as opposed to the Prometheans where you have to use the pen. But, I'm more impressed with the Promethean software. We also have the Senteo clickers (instant-response system), and they're cool too, but again, the Promethean ones seem better to me. My general opinion is that there is nobody in any classroom that couldn't benefit from an interactive whiteboard. Mitch, I use Boztek VENM Console 2009. It uses VNC (I use Ultra w/ encryption) It is a download that is really cheap. I bought 1 admin license for $59. It works pretty well, and you can do a bunch of scripting things with it. I do not use it with the thin clients we have. For those I just hop on the thin client server and remote control them. It saves a bunch of trips to the other buildings because I just remote in when possible and fix things and walk people through things. The software is updated often (I think I have had 4 last week) to fix bugs and add features. Re: [info-tech] p!mp my cla$$room
Ok . . . well we've bought a few --Promethean, I was impressed with those-- (because there was money available), but I am embarrassed to say I haven't installed them yet. Not sure of where to put them to be most beneficial, and not sure where the permanent solution is. I would like to think we're doing OK--all of our teachers have laptops, the three upper buildings have projectors, and the two lower buildings have a few projectors currently to share. HS is almost fully stocked with document cameras, our upper elementary building 1/2 with them, and the rest will hopefully have them and the projectors (for those who don't currently) by next school year. While the coolness of a smartboard excites me (a techie)--I'm wondering how much more the smartboard does than the document camera (for most) at this point. I will still be doing staff development this winter/spring on how to do powerpoints and AEA online, video streaming, --as well as online learning, iLife suite and some higher end use. I just think there are so many skills and comfort levels that need to be overcome before we move to learning and figuring out an interactive whiteboard and something that a cheaper alternative can probably take care of (doc cams). Of course, I'm thinking of how could we be using cell phones in the classrooms now (-vs- a 1:1 laptop initiative--my Blackberry does quite a bit) and other technology sources . . . how does this all fit? (Another discussion for people to comment on.) Again, I think we have a number of staff who would and can embrace the new technology . . . but still some, who, while they like their laptop, would be happier with the old LC Macs note I m not a PC person, again because nothing would have to change. I could then really go on a soapbox of utilizing technology not as a stand alone skill, but rather as a way to make things easier . . . but I'll save it for another time. LOL As far as my classroom . . . projector, surround sound, Flips for everyone (how cool is that), use of cell phones, smartboard (I know what I just talked about . . . but in Utopia), ICN room type setting . . . reseach pods and people who are differentiating instruction and teaching 21st century skills. Ooo and unlimited network size. On Feb 4, 2009, at 4:00 PM, Sarah Freking wrote: I'd like to hear thoughts about smart boards. Who has them, which ones, and what do you think? Sarah M. I have been looking at solutions for several years. If you had money to invest the best I have seen so far is Elluminate. There vClass product was constructed specifically for the education market. The instructor has full control of what each participant can and can not do. There is a simple poll program where you can ask True/False or up to A,B,C,D,E,F. They do offer Three for Free but that is really only helpful for some initial testing. http://www.elluminate.com/ We as an agency are using DimDim (Now that I watched 'Night at the Museum I keep thinning of the Easter Island Statue). The program can do video, but our tech committee consensus is that the video is not that big of a deal. The other features such as shared white board, Desktop Sharing, and file uploading are really the tools needed for remote meetings. Best of all DimDim is free and will allow up to 20 people in a room. Need more rooms, just sign up for more accounts. LanSchool does that and also allows teachers control for teaching a class. For example a teacher using the media center with her class can blank the screens of the thin clients with say a message like eyes on the teacher please. Then she can release the screens when ready. Keeps them from screwing around and not paying attention. It is also very reasonably priced. The trial you download is just for PCs you would need to get the final version. You'll have to buy the software. The owners manual which you can download shows how to set it up for RDP. Yes, I feel it is easy however I have a long history with terminal services (about 8 years) so editing any TS files for me is not a big deal. Please look at page 13 of the install manual I sent a little while ago so that you understand how it will setup under terminal services before you buy it. [info-tech] MS Select Licenses
I just heard back from the claims people for the Microsoft Settlement. The reason I received a letter saying Microsoft could not find any Volume License records is because all of our volume licenses were purchased through someone else under the Select Agreement(i.e. Software Plus), therefore, all of our Volume Licenses will be on a second report yet to come. He had no ETA on that report. I hope this information might help someone else, as I was on hold for about 1 hour. Again, they raise my hopes. However, I am bracing for yet more disappointment. So does this mean we need to try to find invoices from SW Plus and sent those in or not? Actually, I just talked to someone about the same thing. We bought many of our licenses during that time period from SoftwarePlus (now known as Softchoice). I was not impressed by the person talking to me. She seemed to be more confused about the whole thing more than me. Manson Northwest Webster-Home of the Cougars! RE: [info-tech] MS Select Licenses
I called them today and Softchoice told me he was going to look into it and see if he could find more proof to satisfy MS. Evidently, the info. that we sent originally for SW Plus did not satisfy the claim people. Softchoice sounded like they have been getting calls today. Manson Northwest Webster-Home of the Cougars! RE: [info-tech] MS Select Licenses
No confusion from my guy. He said that the proof I submitted the first time around should be enough. They are just doing the VLs purchased straight from MS first. They have rounds of claims lettered. A,B,C... The Select Licenses are in round C which hasn't happened yet according to the guy I talked with. Apparently Licenses purchased under the Select Program were not supposed to be listed under the Volume License section even though they are Volume Licenses. We were supposed to list them under the individual license section. Did it say that somewhere I missed? I am so confused. Lawyers... So do we need to send anything else to them? We all received a letter to send more proof and only have 30 days to do so. I had the same thoughts. He assured me this was the case. However, I guess maybe we should all call, put the various stories we get together, and then maybe we can figure out the real deal. I am as confused as everyone else, and I can only go by what they guy on the phone told me. If he is wrong, I am screwed I guess, but I will not go down quietly.
