[info-tech]help before i got completely insane
I need help from anyone that can help me. We recently bought a mobile lab cart with 30 hp laptops and have nothing but problems with them. They came loaded with Vista Business and have plenty of RAM and processor speed to do what we need. Just never have any luck with printing to the printer on the cart, accessing the internet, loading up students personal drives and the mapped drives. I will log in as administrator, fix the wireless card and than log off and hand it to a student and then it will lose the connection. I log back on as administrator and will have to repair the wireless again. Anyone out there have some suggestions on what to try or can tell me who has no issues with wireless that i could come visit them before i decide to start throwing these laptops and not joking about them. Is there wireless software on them, like Belkin (?), or something that is taking control of the wireless instead of the Windows administration of the wireless? We ran into that here. All I did was either remove or disable that software, and then Windows took over control of the wireless, and I had no more problems. Sarah Sarah M. RE: [info-tech]help before i got completely insane
Are these N-draft cards? If so, we had an issue with those dealing with fragmentation/RTS thresholds. We had some old b cards that did not like large Frag/RTS thresholds so we had them set low. The N-Draft cards do not like them that low and exhibit behavior similar to what you are describing. So, to fix it we increased the Fragmentation threshold to 2048 and the RTS threshold to 2049 and now all is well with the N-draft cards. However, the old b cards no longer function, which is mostly ok for us since we no longer use those devices except for 1 old palm pilot to program the door locks. RE: [info-tech]help before i got completely insane
I agree also with the problem with third party wireless management. It seems as though it waits until a user is logged on using cached credentials to enable the wireless connection. With Windows managing the connection, it seems like the connection is active immediately when the laptop is fired up. I don't know why you would want it the other way?? It would not allow a new domain user to log on with a wireless connection. Anyway hope that helps... RE: [info-tech]help before i got completely insane
Does anyone know of a company that would come in and do a network survey and see if there are any issues on our network concerning DNS, DHCP or any other mis-configured network programs. Or if you know of a program that will help me with finding a source to my problem. RE: [info-tech]help before i got completely insane
We haven't had a lot of issues with wireless, but we did have some issues with Vista and printers. We found that some of our printers had to be set up as a local printer on the computer or laptop and then we didn't have any more issues on that. RE: [info-tech]help before i got completely insane
One thing that I always had some issues with on Vista with printers was when we turned off UAC. Some printers did not seem to install when UAC was off. If you turned it back on, and went through its UAC process, they would work fine. We only have about 4 Vista machines here, and they are all in use by people who can do their own support. So, they don't seem to ever call us. Have a great weekend everyone, and enjoy the Friday 4:00 ICN session!!! [info-tech] Vulnerabilities
I always debate with the voices in my head whether to let students know of vulnerabilities such as today's Zero-Day with PowerPoint. I always let staff know of such things, but I have not, as of yet, informed students. I guess I fear the ones that would take it as a challenge to download such a file and exploit it within the network. What are others' thoughts on this? I will be here until my ICN session is done ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON! Who thought that was a good idea? So, feel free to reply well into the afternoon. :-| Chad Frerichs Director Of Technology Okoboji Community Schools Milford, IA 51351

Nobody lives in the western third of the state . . . so why does it matter if you schedule an ICN from 4-5:30 on Friday? yes, I was being sarcastic ;-) On Apr 3, 2009, at 3:05 PM, Frerichs, Chad wrote: I always debate with the voices in my head whether to let students know of vulnerabilities such as today’s Zero-Day with PowerPoint. We don't let our people know, as they would expect us to be around fixing it before their e-mail arrived. See you at the ICN, well I won't, but I will be there with you.
