[info-tech] Electronic Devices

2010-03-31 Thread Mitch Mueller
Looking for some good advice from you smarter than myself. We are trying to
block the student iPod Touch's from being able to get to facebook and
myspace and ect. If someone can help me with that, that would be great.

Also if you would be willing to share your electronic device policy that
your school has could you please email it to me personally at
mmuel...@emmetsburg.k12.ia.us or you can post it on the info-tech list if
you would like.

But my big thing is blocking them sites on iPod touch's.

Thanks
Mitch Mueller

Do you have the MAC addresses of those iPod touches? You could try
setting up a bogus DHCP Scope that goes nowhere and entering them as
reservations. I created a DHCP Scope I call the Dead Zone and added a
few as reservations. Your DNS should give you the MAC address of those
units.

Of course if they are able to self assign their IP your in trouble.
Seems to work. Otherwise I am clueless.

Oops my mistake... if you are Windows based use GETMAC or NBTSTAT to
help identify the MAC address once you find the IP in DNS

Ok, first identify what you are wanting...

Cheap

Fast

Good

Pick two of the above.

Cheap and good would be blocking everything but your own equipment from
accessing the wireless network by MAC address or other means.

Cheap and fast would be running something like openDNS and using their
filtering.

Fast and Good would be installing a content filtering Firewall.

You get the idea.

RE: [info-tech] Electronic Devices

2010-03-31 Thread Murphy, Mark
You can only control your network and Lightspeed does block facebook

There are several ways to skin that cat.

Since you are trying to block devices connecting to your wireless
network you can block by IP range.

Under the Policies tab in Policy Assignments you can enter a IP range
and assign a content filter policy that blocks the
forum-social_networking category or where ever to have put facebook

Depending on your content filter policy you will have to make sure to
block non http protocols to blocked categories this will stop student
and staff from using https to login to facebook

There is going to be a Lightspeed training course in Jefferson this
summer

I didn't intend for that to sound a snarky as it did, so let me
rephrase it...

If we spent half the time educating teachers/students/parents as we
did plugging holes our jobs would be a lot less hectic. I have gotten
to the point now, if someone points out a proxy site that is
unblocked, I just tell the staff to have the kid get off the site and
watch them, end of story. If I wanted to I could spend my day
tracking down proxies and blocking sites, but that would suck so I
choose not too.

Microsoft Office 2010 Upgrade Offer - For Student and Teacher Personal Purchases

A new upgrade offer for Microsoft Office 2010 has just been announced for any
school student/staff/faculty member intending to purchase Office software
through JourneyEd and the IEC (www.journeyed.com/select).

For qualifying Office 2007 purchases made March 5th through September 30th,
Microsoft is offering an upgrade option to the 2010 version for a nominal fee.
Individuals will be able to use their existing license of Office 2007 to
upgrade for the additional price of $9.98 for ESD, $14.98 for physical media.

How does it work? When Office 2010 is available for upgrade, all qualifying
purchasers will be notified via email by JourneyEd. JourneyEd will also notify
the schools. At that time, additional detailed instructions will be provided as
to how to redeem the upgrade.

Why the offer? Microsoft would like to enable graduating students to acquire
the rights to their latest version of Office at a special price while they are
still eligible. Attached is a pdf flyer promoting this offer. You are
encouraged to post as you see fit.
