Good evening-

We have used Vision (originally from Altiris, most recently from Geneva
Logic) in our computer labs to demo out to the screens of the rest of the lab.
It also allows the teacher to monitor all of the lab computers from the teacher
computers. We always seem to have issues with them, and are looking for what
people are using on their Windows machines. We use a couple of Faronics
products, so I am looking into their Insight product, but looking for
suggestions of other products as well.

Also, if you have used a product, and it hasn't performed, that would help
us too. Again, this is a Windows environment.

Thanks, and get to sleep!!!

I need to get a Wi-fi signal to the bus barn. It is about 150 yards from the
elementary to the Bus barn. We have been using an old Linksys Wap11 Wireless
hub to send the signal through a window and then connects to a Wireless to
Wired bridge with an antenna that is poking through the wall of the buss barn.
So I need to be able to send a RELIABLE signal to the bus barn for the
transportation director. The computer in the barn has a wi-fi card so we could
skip the bridge, but the barn is made of metal. Also I have been told it has
to be cheap. I suggested a Pringals can wifi cannon but it was shot down. So
what does this mind-trust have for ideas?

Hi,

We have used NEC projectors for the last several yrs. with very good results.
Current model we are ordering is the NP-510.

We have done a lot of classrooms with amps and a ceiling speaker in the last 5
yrs. We have recently done quite a few with Lightspeed classroom amplification
(850ir) and this speaker all tied back to the computer, etc.

All items available with AV-Coop pricing.

[info-tech] FW: PPEL for Technology-Please Help!

2010-03-01 Thread Buenz, Tim
Hi,

Please take some time to contact your legislators today. There are some much
needed changes proposed in SF 2290. Links are embedded below. Thanks!
Tim

According to today's SAI Legislative Update, note that two bills that provide
more flexibility in PPEL for technology are being considered by the Iowa House
and Senate. I'd encourage all to advocate your interests related to these bills
this week with your legislators.

HF
2462
 &
SF2290-PPEL
bills that have been amended and fit SAI's
platform. It would be helpful to express your
interest in these first two bills with your legislators this week!

Hi Tim,

There's never been a better time to become a Lightspeed Certified
Administrator. The five-day course is now accredited through Fresno Pacific
University for you to optionally receive three units of college credit. Get the
training you need to stretch your investment--and take the required exams--at
either our roadshows or our conferences.

Training Roadshows

These hands-on training events held all across the United States are limited to
30 trainees and include lunch each day. The week culminates with an opportunity
to take the exams.
*   February 8-12, 2010: Englewood, CO

*   July 26-30, 2010: Lancaster, PA
*   August 2-6, 2010: Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX

Lightspeed Certification Training & Community Conferences

The conferences include the same certification training as the roadshows and a
whole lot more--namely user group meetings, evening activities, more peers to
interact with, and ALL your meals through Friday lunch--for the same $800.
*   April 12-16, 2010: Austin, TX
* June 14-18, 2010: Bakersfield, CA (home of Lightspeed
Systems)

SA Roadmap Clarification

The very observant Bob Lillie of Willows Unified detected a hole in the
Security Agent
roadmap
appearing in last week's Tips & Tricks. Bob wrote, "I have hundreds of XP
machines that won't support 64-bit or Vista/7. If v7.02 will be the last
release, will the database continue to be updated?"

Answer: Yes, both v8.0 and v7.02 draw from the same master database that is
continuously updated. While SA v8.0 will only support Vista, Windows 7, Server
2008, we will follow up with an SA v8.01 that will include the new scanner and
support both 32- and 64-bit XP. We just didn't want to hold up the 64-bit
version any longer since it is done. Sorry for the confusion.

Download Security Best Practices

As noted, we are working hard to improve the database, software, and support.
But you can help us help you. Download our Security Best
Practices, which covers network and
desktop guidelines to substantially reduce the likelihood of any security
issues on your network.

RE: [info-tech] Personal Wireless Devices

2010-01-14 Thread Buenz, Tim
As Craig said, we don't allow personal devices on the internal network wired or
wireless. We do have guest wireless internet access that is outside our LAN. It
is also password protected to keep personal devices off the internet. It also
has very basic content filtering.

Okay everyone,

I knew the day was going to come, I just did not know when. It has
arrived. We are having a meeting to determine whether to allow
Personal Wireless Devices on our network or not.

I am asking for some assistance from anyone willing to share.

Here is what I am asking for

1. Do you allow outside wireless devices to access your network?

2. If so, why? If not, Why not?

I am on the fence here and want to present logical arguments for and
against both so that the Admin team can make an informed decision to
the board who can then make the policy.

Thanks all.

I've been discussing this with our board secretary recently. She uses Word,
keeps all the files on her computer, backed up to a flash drive, and every
time there are revisions, she burns the whole set of documents to CDs and
mails them to the board members, telling them to throw away their previous
CD. We've been discussing using Google Docs for this. She likes that idea,
and I don't see any big problems with it, other than uploading a lot of Word
documents. Any thoughts on that?

We've been through support nightmares with SmartTech at Sheldon. Parts
take 6-8 weeks to arrive, phone calls and emails go unanswered, and when
they do reply (by phone or email) it takes days or even weeks to get a
technician who is familiar with the issue. In other words, it takes
significant trouble to get to a higher-level support technician at Smart
who does something other than read from their canned-answer book. One of
the power supplies inside of the 2000i and 3000i mobile Smartboards has
gone out on almost all of the units, and of course, this part isn't
covered under warranty, and the only place to get one is from SmartTech
themselves for $120+. The 600i units have been nothing but trouble also,
and it appears that they have gone so far as to cancel that line now.

I think between the front- and rear-projection units, Sheldon owns about
32 Smartboard products, and the only units that we haven't had trouble
with are the standalone wall-mounted boards with a separately-purchased
projector. Needless to say, we're researching alternatives.

Previously we used the Bose 151 speaker or a custom built drop in ceiling
speaker.

We have started including classroom amplification systems in our DLT classrooms
and are installing 7 more this summer. They work great. In existing DLT rooms
we replace the RadioShack amp with their 850ir unit or in new DLT rooms use
their 880ir unit that has an amp built in.

Model using existing RShack amp: http://www.lightspeed-tek.com/850ir.aspx

Model with amp included: http://www.lightspeed-tek.com/880ir.aspx

The Lightspeed-Tek multimedia speaker is brand new. We got an eval. unit and
installed in an existing DLT room and it worked very well.

http://www.lightspeed-tek.com/mcq.aspx

All their products are on the av-coop. I think the new speaker is $244.00
delivered.

[info-tech] FW: Tech. Support Guidelines

2009-04-24 Thread Buenz, Tim
Hi,

I thought this article was very good and wanted to share it with you. Have a
good weekend!

When you encounter problems with your computer or with specific applications,
it is often necessary to call the information technology help desk to resolve
them. As dozens of jokes attest, it can often take a while for the help desk to
accurately diagnose and correct the problem. To assist in the process as much
as possible, following are five easy steps you can take to help them in the
situation.

Investigate. Before calling the IT help desk, do a little investigative work on
your own. It is truly amazing how many errors disappear, never to be seen
again, simply by rebooting the computer. If you are having trouble with basic
hardware issues, like turning on the monitor or connecting to a network, take a
few seconds to unplug the monitor or network cable and then plug it back in,
ensuring that the cable is firmly pressed into the outlet or jack.

Recreate. After you have tried basic solutions, try to recreate the problem.
For example, run the same application again and try to perform the same task
that originally caused the problem. If you cannot reliably cause the error
message to show again, then the IT help desk will probably not be able to
assist you. They will not doubt that you did have an error, but they cannot fix
an error if they do not have the opportunity to identify the cause of it.

Record. If you can recreate the error, then take a few minutes to write down as
much information as you can about the situation. Write down the exact text
shown in the error message, and be sure to include an error number if it is
shown. Note which application is generating the error, as well as other
applications that are also open. Do some quick testing to see if the same error
is generated by other applications or only by the one you had open. All of this
information will help the help desk workers more quickly identify the problem.

Explain. When you do call the help desk, politely explain to them everything
that you have already tried and also share all of the information that you have
gathered about the problem. They will likely want to begin their examination by
asking you to perform some simple tasks or check application settings. Follow
all of their instructions exactly, even if the tasks repeat something that you
have already tried or seem trivial or silly. They have specific reasons for
each step they ask you to follow.

Understand. Finally, always try to be patient with the help desk. In many
businesses and schools, the IT help desk is understaffed and overworked. They
have to deal daily with many people who are each convinced that their own
problem should be top priority. Remember that the help desk workers are very
much like you-regular people trying to make it through each day.

Following these basic steps can ease the stress of technological problems, both
for you and for the IT help desk employees.

students from calling and texting during class, a Spokane area school has
scrapped the program.

Administrators at Mt. Spokane High School used the jammer during class periods
last week to prevent students from texting.

The jammer blocked all cell phone service within about a 30-foot radius.

Administrators at Mt. Spokane tested the device, and then waited for
clarification from the District as to whether the device was legal.

Authorities at the District say their technology department reviewed FCC code
and decided the jammer was probably not legal.

The FCC has several postings on their web site related to cell phone jammers.

KHQ found one page dated June 27, 2005, that says, "the marketing sale or
operation of this type of equipment is unlawful. Anyone involved with such
activities may be subject to forfeitures, fines or even criminal prosecution."

District administrators say they were also concerned about a block in
communication during a potential campus emergency.

They plan on returning the jammer, which cost less than $100, and asking for a
refund.

Usually in your city cable franchise agreement there will be a statement about
who should get free cable services. Usually it is the city offices and the

I just heard back from the claims people for the Microsoft Settlement. The
reason I received a letter saying Microsoft could not find any Volume License
records is because all of our volume licenses were purchased through someone
else under the Select Agreement(i.e. Software Plus), therefore, all of our
Volume Licenses will be on a second report yet to come. He had no ETA on that

Again, they raise my hopes. However, I am bracing for yet more disappointment.

Dear Tim,

Congress is poised to determine how much federal economic recovery funding --
perhaps billions, perhaps nothing -- will go towards supporting education
technology. Congress needs to hear from you right now about the value of
investing in classroom learning technologies to prime the economy, create jobs
and prepare today's students for tomorrow's jobs. NOW is the time to make your
voice heard.

President-Elect Obama has made it clear that providing substantial funding for
classroom technology in his economic recovery package is one of his top
priorities. Just last week, he gave voice to this vision, saying: "To give our
children the chance to live out their dreams in a world that's never been more
competitive, we will equip tens of thousands of schools, community colleges,
and public universities with 21st century classrooms, labs, and libraries.
We'll provide new computers, new technology, and new training for teachers so
that students in Chicago and Boston can compete with kids in Beijing for the
high-tech, high-wage jobs of the future."

Now, it is up to Congress to implement this vision by including substantial
funding in the economic recovery package that its leaders are preparing. They
are expected to complete work on this legislation before Presidents' Day.

We urge you to contact your Congressional members now. Tell them what an
infusion of K-12 educational technology funding will do for America's economy
and for its K-12 students. Please click
here<http://capwiz.com/edtech/utr/1/IIFBJPCPLH/OCFHJPCZLO/2775381646> to share
with your members of Congress the importance of education technology for your
school, district and state.

Please do not let this opportunity to dramatically improve American education
and jump start our nation's economy slip away. Act today.

ETAN updates are brought to you by the Consortium for School Networking and the
International Society for Technology in Education.

RE: [info-tech] Windows Error Message

2008-10-30 Thread Buenz, Tim
Try this..

1. Install/Uninstall Debris Problems. The Vista Installer is a fragile
program that can be damaged or blocked by Windows Updates or even failed
installations, which can occur for any number of reasons, producing inability
to install anything and any number of error messages. The Windows Uninstall
program is less than optimum at removing all parts of any uninstall and
frequently leaves remnant files and folders or registry entries of the
uninstalled program on your computer. The more the debris from failed or
broken installations and from incomplete uninstallations mounts up, the worse
your system works.

Some software companies provide an uninstall tool on their support website
(i.e. AdobeFlash, Norton, McAfee) which can help with this process, but often
even these special uninstaller tools leave remnants of the program on your
computer that can block or degrade the installation new or update programs.
You can further clean up your computer manually as outlined in the following
tutorial:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/87249-unable-install-latest-version-program-vista.html

I have since found and used a program called "Smarty Uninstaller" that does
an even better job of uninstalling programs, even tough ones like McAfee and
Norton. You scan your computer and the program identifies all the programs
on your computer, listing those that have their own uninstaller program and
those that are only remnants of a program. First you click for it to use the
program's uninstaller, and then when it's finished, Smarty UI identifies any
program remnants and will then uninstall the remnants (from files, folders,
and registry entries). For Smarty UI (free trial period, cheap to buy) see
link below:

http://www.winnertweak.com/uninstaller/

After running Smarty UI, I recommend using the Windows Installer Cleanup
Utility to finish off the uninstallation. This program is available at the
following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Once the debris of failed installs/uninstalls is completely removed, you
should be able to do a clean install of the new or update program without
problems. If all this fails, you can do a clean reinstall of your OS.

2. Vista Repair Options. If you've cleared your computer of all
install/uninstall debris and you're still having problems, go to the
following tutorial which will take you stepwise through repair steps. The
last step in the process involves a clean install of Vista. Some people have
upgraded from XP to Vista over an XP install and portions of XP may be
jamming up your Vista OS. This last tutorial will show you how to do a clean
upgrade install, with a primary Vista install from XP, and then doing a
secondary clean Vista install from your primary Vista install, eliminating
all traces of XP.

The outside fixed cameras (POC484L5) are about $750 ea. and the PTZ's

RE: [info-tech] Speakers/Projectors

2008-03-06 Thread Buenz, Tim
Hi,

We have 40 classrooms at the MS/HS with mounted projectors and sound. We call
them our "DLT" (digital learning & teaching) classrooms and Webster City calls
their version a "smart classroom". We started having custom drop in ceiling
speakers built by Ray Pregitzer in Ames (515)233-5003. These speakers are about
$120 ea. but are awesome. He went out of business for awhile but I just talked
to him about another speaker order and he is back in the speaker production
business. Attached is a picture of his speaker. We used a 40 watt RadioShack
amp (32-2054) and they have worked great also. Our local RadioShack dealer
provided very good pricing for us, Webster City and Fairfield. I'm sure he
would do this again in quantity.

We have also used this Bose speaker which comes as a pair and you only need one
per classroom. Bose does also have an education discount program.

We use AR web-based (Renaissance Place) in our MS. Kids are only allowed to
take tests in certain LArt's classrooms. You can configure it to only allow
approved IP's to access your RP website (like your ext. firewall ip) which we
did and you can also set a time range when kids can login to the website like
8-4pm, etc. It works good..you can import student demo data, login
names/passwords, and advance grades, etc. Has only gone off-line once in the
last 2-3 yrs. because of an internet outage on their end and it was down about
a 1/2 day.

Subject: [info-tech] Accelerated Reader

I received some information regarding Accelerated Reader and the
Enterprise version recently. I noticed it's web based, with access
to ALL quizzes available (no more $3/quiz), along with vocabulary and
math skill building available as well (and to all lower levels).
Currently, our 4-5 building uses it, as well as our 6-8. The 4-5 is
set up using a network based approach, the 6-8 is stand alone on a
few extra ("older") computers set up in language art rooms. This was
all set up before me time, and I am now interested in either
combining the databases, going web based, or other options available
to me I don't know about.

Unless we merge buildings, I was told I cannot combine the
databases. (And it appears as if the tests are specifically "coded"
for each building.) The 6-8 teachers are fearful of a web based
application because they want kids to only use it on the computers in
their room. Both use it as a part of their reading curriculum (from
what I understand). We also purchased SuccessMaker several years ago
to use with our non proficient and special education populations to
build on reading, vocabulary and math skills. This is a network set
up, but needs the OS 9 to boot up--which they are no longer
supporting--in which case we will need to upgrade as we replace
computers with newer ones.

I'm just curious as to what others are using in regard to Accelerated
Reader, and any advantages/disadvantages to any of the options
mentioned above. If the Enterprise has Math, Vocabulary, Reading
software, and is part of the AR already being used . . . It seems
silly to support multiple vendor based programs that do the same
thing in essence (maybe). Esp. is stuff is web based. Also, is
anyone using the Scholastic Read180 software instead? I know their
doing their demo at the end of the month, but again, just looking for
feedback.
Thanks in advance for any info, and stay safe and warm!

Vicki,

we use the JMC module. Immunizations and other stuff (that is a technical
definition by the way) are input by our School Nurse. She is awesome by the
way and she once diagnosed my eye ulcer.

Eye ulcers are very painful things. If you have never had one, I hope that you
never get one. IT is all better now, however my ears are still ringing from
the concert I attended on Monday night. Velvet Revolver is for now, the
loudest concert I have ever attended.

So how about those Patriots, I truly think that there is no comparison between
them and the 76 Dolphins. I mean come on Larry Csonka weighed in at what 175
and the Linebackers then were about 215. IT is no comparison to the
athleticism of today's NFL athletes. To go undefeated in the NFL today is a
much greater feat than to have done so in 76.

But I digress. Vicki, we use JMC Health Module, and we like it.

[info-tech] FW: Tell Congress to Fund Education Technology!

2007-11-14 Thread Buenz, Tim

Subject: Tell Congress to Fund Education Technology!

Dear Tim,
On Thursday night Congress votes on overriding the President's veto of
education spending. Now is the time to make your voice heard.

Action: This Thursday night, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote
on overriding the President's veto of the FY08 Labor, HHS and Education
Appropriations bill, which contains $272 million for Enhancing Education
Through Technology (EETT) program. The Senate may vote soon, as well. Please
email your Senators and Representatives immediately and urge them to override
the President's veto and support passage of the FY08 Labor, HHS and Education
spending bill. Click
here<http://capwiz.com/edtech/utr/1/KYPFHVZEJF/CLNOHVZMXT/1556920976> for a
draft email.

Background: The House and the Senate approved a final, compromise Labor, HHS
and Education spending bill last week. The final, conferenced bill contains
level funding of $272 million for EETT-a victory for education technology
advocates. On Tuesday, the President vetoed the final version of the Labor, HHS
and Education spending bill because it exceeds his budget proposals by nearly
$11 billion. This action imperils EETT funding. The House and Senate need a
two-thirds majority vote in order to override the President's veto and enact
this appropriations legislation. This may be our last chance to ensure adequate
education technology money in 2008!

Please write your congressional representatives and ask them to override the
President's veto of the Labor-HHS and Education bill. Let Congress know the
deep impact this funding has on the day-to-day lives of our nation's students
and teachers.

Thanks for all of your hard work!
CoSN and ISTE

ETAN updates are brought to you by the Consortium for School Networking and the
International Society for Technology in Education.

http://www.learning.com/tla/index.htm

Here at South Hamilton we use a self administered survey to determine
technology proficiencies, not terribly useful or accurate, so I have spent some
time looking at alternative, and found the Technology Learning Assessment from
Learning.com. I spoke with a rep from the company after looking over the
website and what the assessment offers, it appears quite comprehensive and well
laid out. One of the things I liked about it is the ability for schools to go
together to lower the costs. There is an initial cost to set up the test of
$1500 but if more than one school goes together that number can be split many
ways. After the set up the cost is $5/student assessed annually. South
Hamilton is looking at this assessment and we would like to know if there are
other schools that might be interested and if so seeing about setting up a
consortium of sorts to lower the costs. If this is something that interested
you please email me off list and we can talk. RIght now I know Boone CSD is
using the assessment and I am waiting to here back from them to get their
thoughts. Thanks.

Hi,

A new option to compete with OneNotify.com and SnowCap...

Iowa School Alerts allows you to sign up and receive notifications when a
school or school district closes, has a delayed start or an early dismissal.
There are two ways to receive notifications:

 * E-mail alerts - Receive e-mail notices when a school or school district
you are interested in delays starting or closes early. Do you have multiple
e-mail addresses or more than one person who should be notified? Do you want to
keep a watch on multiple school buildings or districts? No problem! With Iowa
School Alerts you can have notifications sent to as many e-mail addresses or
e-mail-enabled device addresses as you would like, for as many schools or
districts as you like.
 * RSS Feed - Iowa School Alerts provides a Rich Site Summary (RSS) feed for
websites that wish to give their site users a comprehensive list of
notifications. This is a great way for the media, communities and
school-related organizations to publish notifications on their own website.
