We are in the middle planning stages. I just recently stepped into the tech position after being retired for two and a half years. I am a bit more cautious in a 1:1 deployment than my predecessor, having been on the bleeding edge many times over the years. The Netbooks have been purchased and are on hand and the original issue date was Oct 8. However, a combination of events has pushed that back to a date to be determined. On Wednesday morning, our administration and myself will be meeting with Scott, Jason, and several other people to establish a timeline for deployment, computer image development, Dyknow training, and more importantly, a re-evaluation of our network system. Google apps is slated to become the backbone of our 1:1 system. Dyknow will allow classroom level application and control in the school environment. We plan to have local network storage of some type for the students but many of the student files will be stored in Google Apps. Google also has a piece called Gears that allows a student to use Google Docs offline. We are considering dropping our Exchange Server (a little tiny tear, and I mean tiny) and having the AEA host our faculty and for the first time, student email. The ultimate goal is to simplify our network operations as much as possible. For the really high end tech stuff, we employ Heartland Technology Services out of Ames on an hourly basis. We are in the process of hiring a new tech coordinator and I have said that it should be someone from with an education background, someone that will do the training and provide the moral support to make 1:1 a success. So making their life easier by simplifying our network is a necessary part of that plan. We are meeting at 10 PM on Wed in our Central Office east of the elementary building. Since you are apparently considering 1:1, you're more than welcome to join us and gain the insight you mentioned first hand. Just let me know if you plan to attend. These are actual comments made on students' report cards by teachers in the New York City public school system. All teachers were reprimanded (but, boy, are these funny!) 1. Since my last report, your child has reached rock bottom and has started to dig. 2. I would not allow this student to breed. 3. Your child has delusions of adequacy. 4. Your son is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot. 5. Your son sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them. 6. The student has a full six-pack but lacks the plastic thing to hold it all together . 7. This child has been working with glue too much. 8. When your daughter's IQ reaches 50, she should sell. 9. The gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn't coming. 10. If this student were any more stupid, he'd have to be watered twice a week. 11. It's impossible to believe the sperm that created this child beat out 1,000,000 others. 12. The wheel is turning but the hamster is definitely dead. Dan Davis Network Administrator Spirit Lake Comm. [info-tech] employee time software
Jim, We are using a software product called Punch Clock which has a server install and client as well. I have this installed on approx 30 computers within the district which tracks all times punching in and out daily for staff. Reports are then produced when needed and are written to simple text files which can be edited. For 200 nodes we paid $299.99. The only issue we have seen so far is that staff members cannot punch in and out more than 4 times daily, this will then cause errors when writing to the text files. There is also a nice backup utility included to store all time files if needed and can be used to restore data. Dan Dan Davis Network Administrator Spirit Lake Comm. [info-tech] PC/MAC to TV
I have had a request from our teachers to be able to connect their PCs to overhead TVs for student viewing. I am looking into the AVerKey products for this, but was curious what other School Districts are using currently with good or bad results. RE: [info-tech] VERITAS About Us
I believe that Veritas latest software release is 10 which can be downloaded from their website, I called Veritas support and they emailed me the current licenses needed for an upgrade. I had recently purchased the 9.1 version of their software. It took about 8 months to get the software. Don't know if their policy has changed since being taken over by the people in yellow. The form was fairly simple to fill-out. They provide version 9.1 with licenses for two sites. RE: [info-tech] VERITAS About Us
Also, it seems that the version 9.1 remote agents do not need to be uninstalled, and then version 10 remote agents installed. (This from Veritas tech support). I was told that the version 9.1 agents are compatible with version 10 software, as yet however, I have not tested this on our network. RE: [info-tech] text messaging
You can also block the default client port of 1863 for msn and I believe 1590 for AOL chat, however usually the msn will default to regular port 80 when the connection cannot be made on 1863, otherwise I also block sites for messaging and I also have a group policies which do not allow the msn program to be executed. I can send a message from uscellular.com if I enter my cell phone number and the number of the phone I want to send to. If you can find out the web site(s) they are sending from, you can probably add the site(s) to your firewall. I assume you are not talking about Instant Messaging like MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, or AOL Instant Messenger. I have those sites blocked with my firewall already. There are probably others, but I have not found any that install on the local machines. Brian Ney N. [info-tech] Print Authentication
I am curious what other school districts are doing to secure printing and to offset the costs of print paper and print toner. We are looking into the idea of charging individual students a fee at the beginning of the year to recoup some toner costs throughout the school year. I have printing security via AD setup that only allow staff and students access to certain networked printers within the district and I also am installing them via scripts as needed. However, allowing students to print curriculm papers, also allows them to print non-educational material as well. Does anyone have, or use some type of print authentication software which requires username and password when print jobs are submitted? RE: [info-tech] selling/giving away older computers
Brad, We usually have a District garage sale in the spring each year and sell old computers, monitors, desks and the like, we also have a no haggle policy as well. This is usually a great way to get rid of old equipment and make a little money back for the district. RE: [info-tech] Fiber Question
Julie, We buried fiber ourselves which connects all district buildings; I also have fiber connecting all our internal satellite switches within each building. We have no reoccurring monthly fees.
