Have looked at Xirrus and Aruba and unless you have plenty of time on your

Dan,

Pocahontas Area is doing a 1:1 with H-P Netbooks. We are in the
middle planning stages. I just recently stepped into the tech position after
being retired for two and a half years. I am a bit more cautious in a 1:1
deployment than my predecessor, having been on the bleeding edge many times
over the years. The Netbooks have been purchased and are on hand and the
original issue date was Oct 8. However, a combination of events has pushed that
back to a date to be determined. On Wednesday morning, our administration and
myself will be meeting with Scott, Jason, and several other people to establish
a timeline for deployment, computer image development, Dyknow training, and
more importantly, a re-evaluation of our network system. Google apps is slated
to become the backbone of our 1:1 system. Dyknow will allow classroom level
application and control in the school environment. We plan to have local
network storage of some type for the students but many of the student files
will be stored in Google Apps. Google also has a piece called Gears that
allows a student to use Google Docs offline. We are considering dropping our
Exchange Server (a little tiny tear, and I mean tiny) and having the AEA host
our faculty and for the first time, student email. The ultimate goal is to
simplify our network operations as much as possible. For the really high end
tech stuff, we employ Heartland Technology Services out of Ames on an hourly
basis. We are in the process of hiring a new tech coordinator and I have said
that it should be someone from with an education background, someone that will
do the training and provide the moral support to make 1:1 a success. So making
their life easier by simplifying our network is a necessary part of that plan.
We are meeting at 10 PM on Wed in our Central Office east of the
elementary building. Since you are apparently considering 1:1, you're more than
welcome to join us and gain the insight you mentioned first hand. Just let me
know if you plan to attend.

George

I have used it in one of our computer labs. It worked as advertised, but I
didn't like the fact that there was no Management Console. Each machine had to
be unfrozen manually to apply updates, patches, etc. Maybe they have improved
it since this was a couple of years ago. If it had a Management Console to
unfreeze all computers in one shot, then it would definitely be worth the
money!! I guess it depends on how often you want to patch and update your
computers. It is a great way to make them oblivious to any changes made during
a day. One reboot and all is well again.

We needed to connect our Bus Barn and Tech Buildings in somewhat the same

wireless runs on Proxim's on WORP technology which cannot be scanned via war

Are you sure you have the right equipment? From a quick scan these look like
they would connect to an ISP who has the other end of the circuit, and not
necessarily connect to each other. I could be wrong on this, but it does not
look like the other DSL equipment I have seen. The Point to Point DSL
equipment I have worked with has had two different components.

It also looks like your max speed will be a little low as well with these
devices.

At 1000' I would think wireless would be an option if you can get line of site
between buildings. The ideal situation would be to use Fiber to connect the
buildings for the fastest possible connection.

If you are not using roaming profiles from the server, then each staff /
student who logs into a computer will get a newly created profile on the local
machine, unless they have one from before. This can take up quite a bit of hard
drive space over time. When someone logs into a computer, the first check is
for a server (roaming) profile, then second is the local computer, and then
finally one is created locally if needed.

2009-07-16 Thread Dan Davis
In our group policies I have this set so they save in the My Documents folder
on the desktop, however this is actually virtually mapped to a storage space
on our servers. That way I do not need to worry about mapping drives for staff
for this.

I use roaming profiles for staff, not students. This is handled via our

[info-tech] employee time software

2006-12-04 Thread Dan Davis
Jim,

We are using a software product called Punch Clock which has a server
install and client as well. I have this installed on approx 30 computers
within the district which tracks all times punching in and out daily for
staff. Reports are then produced when needed and are written to simple
text files which can be edited.

For 200 nodes we paid $299.99.

The only issue we have seen so far is that staff members cannot punch in
and out more than 4 times daily, this will then cause errors when
writing to the text files.

There is also a nice backup utility included to store all time files if
needed and can be used to restore data.

More information on this

In speaking with ECI their software will support the following.

Windows Environment to 2003
MAC Environment to OSX and is supported on previous version of MAC as
well.

Both of these are supported in native networked environments.

Also, their software is written with File Maker which they are currently
working to update to version 8 with no definite timeline in mind for

RE: [info-tech] web based time clock system

2006-03-21 Thread Dan Davis
Matt,
We are using the Punch Clock software
http://www.punch-clock.com/index.html
This has a base system and client which is installed on multiple
computers within the district, our grounds and maintenance supervisor
found this and decided on it. We have had no problems with it so far and
works fine for what he wants to track. This is not web based however.

I thought that Software Unlimited had a web interface client.

Otherwise, if you are into different distro's there is epayroll on
sourceforge.net, this might be pretty bloated for what you are wanting
to do.

A few questions as our tech committee is about to meet...

1. Do you allow students to access private email accounts...HotMail,
Yahoo, etc. on school computers, during school hours?

2. If not, what is the reasoning?

3. If yes what is the reasoning?

4. Do you offer school based email accounts for all high school
students (9-12 or a mixture of) which the school sets up and manages
(such as for classes, online classes, college classes, etc.?

5. If you do not allow it, do you deal with it by blocking access or
or as part of a user agreement.

Thanks in advance

RE: [info-tech] Proxima/Infocus Repair

We usually send our projectors back to the original manufacturers of the
product itself, unless these were purchased from the AV COOP, the
vendors should cover them with a 3 year warranty. Other wise we send
ours to Rick's Computers which I believe also advertises on the AV site
as well.

otherwise I also block sites for messaging and I also have a group policies

[info-tech] Print Authentication

2005-01-13 Thread Dan Davis

I am curious what other school districts are doing to secure
printing and to offset the costs of print paper and print toner. We are looking
into the idea of charging individual students a fee at the beginning of the
year to recoup some toner costs throughout the school year. I have printing
security via AD setup that only allow staff and students access to certain
networked printers within the district and I also am installing them via
scripts as needed. However, allowing students to print curriculm papers, also
allows them to print non-educational material as well. Does anyone have, or use
some type of print authentication software which requires username and password
when print jobs are submitted?
