Conditions were decent, though not spectacular, to the east overnight.
Didn't hear anything new, but did note several infrequent visitors. I
did run across one mystery on 1410. Had what sounded like an ID, but the
call letters I was hearing didn't match up to anything. I'd welcome
any fresh ears having a listen at:

[IRCA] WWXL DX Test

2014-03-01 Thread dxerak

Heard in Madison WI from just before 2304 ELT to past 2332 ELT. Very weak at
times, but my suspicion is that the entire time was continuous Morse code. The
code itself was faster than most DX tests, and that combined with generally
weak signal will make ID'able material hard to figure out. But there are a few
minutes of better quality signal and I am confident that I will read it with
time.

Thank you very much, Paul Walker for posting this test! Thanks too to Rick Dau
who made sure that I was notified in time to hear this one.

I am hearing KCTE 1510 Independence MO, a 10 kw directional daytimer with a

[IRCA] Help Needed, UnID on 1040-- Radio Mayabeque?

2014-02-12 Thread dxerak

I need some help with an unID heard last Sunday night on 1040 kHz. The station
is in SS and I have never heard an SS station on 1040 before. If you are
willing to help, I have an mp3 file that I can send you off-list. I would
appreciate very much your reaction to what you hear on this file. Thank you
very much in advance.

On Sunday night Barry McLarnon posted of hearing Radio Mayabeque Cuba on 1040
kHz, made possible by some auroral enhancement and by the absence of WBZ
IBOC.Since I too suffer from WBZ IBOC, his tip inspired me to also try 1040. As
Barry wrote, "The WBZ IBOC outage may not last for much longer, so get 'em
while you can" And sure enough, two nights later he reported that WBZ IBOC
was back. DX opportunity shut down for the unforeseeable future. So here I am
with the Sunday unID.

One result of the lack of WBZ IBOC was to strengthen WHO's signal, but also
present was a weak SS signal mostly below WHO. A breakthrough came at the start
of the Fox newscast on WHO, at 0500 UTC (Monday). Tuning down WHO with the
passband filter I got a minute or so of relatively clear signal from the
station, with WHO in and out. A man talked followed by a woman singing for
about 20 seconds (an ID? a product jingle?) followed by the song "It Never
Rains in Southern California"; then the signal went back below WHO. All of this
is included on the mp3.

If this is Radio Mayabeque, I have very little evidence to confirm it. At one
point I think I hear the words "la Revolucion" almost immediately followed by a
clear "Mayabeque," Two problems, however, with "Mayabeque": it is not proceded
by the word "Radio" and it is pronounced with a pause between the second and
third syllables of this four-syllable word, i.e. Maya-beque. So it remains an
unID at present.

Ideas? Any help on this one will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

[IRCA] WSAI 1360 Making it into WI Tonight

2014-02-04 Thread dxerak

I can not remember the last time I have heard WSAI (or any of its predecessors)
1360 Cincinnati at night (maybe never), but tonight it is dominating the
frequency. WSAI is 5 kw ND days and 5 kw directional nights. There signal has a
huge null toward the entire Upper Midwest, so perhaps they are operating ND
tonight or their night pattern is out of alignment. Format is sports talk,
slogan Fox Sports Radio 1360.

It's sounding like our 1380 culprit may be WABH Bath, NY

People have been reporting odd noise and distortion on 1370 and 1390.

A friend in Cloquet, Minnesota (near Duluth) had his radio pointed east,
and said as sports programming started blaring so did a bunch of crosstalk
and nasty noise.

Did KDOW drop the CP for 50 KW on 1220? It was listed earlier. Hopefully they
did drop it as 1220 is still a decent DX channel here except for the off and on
splatter from KVAS 1230. I heard OH quite often. Maybe KDOW was just on 5 KW
day
power as they were pretty strong.

Thank you very much, Mike!
Here are a few numbers that were staring me in the face while contemplating
ever logging Vermont: there are only 18 AM stations currently licensed in the
state. Of these, two (WRSA 1420 and WFAD 1490) are currently silent. Of the 16
on air, eight are graveyarders, one a daytimer and one (WCFR 1480) is
co-channel one of my locals (WLMV). That leaves six, two of which have
nighttime powers of under 100 watts and the other four of which (including
WDEV) have unfavorable night patterns toward me, to say the least. Without the
efforts of Paul Walker and the staff of WDEV, I am afraid that I might never
have logged Vermont.

[IRCA] WDEV Test

2013-08-17 Thread dxerak
I heard Morse code in the 0003-0004 ELT range, loud enough to be at least
partially readable. The only problem is that the decipherable code did not seem
close to any ID'able test material-- no WDEV, no 550 kHz, no Waterbury. Fellow
Madison DXer Mark Taylor was over for the test, and we were high-fiving when we
heard the code, we were both convinced it came from the station. I'm still
hoping that is true. Later we heard very weak sweep tones in the 0007-0008 ELT
range, something that's been confirmed by some individuals on this list, so I
feel comfortable that I did log this test.

I was using my Double Kaz for this test, normally beamed 280 degrees but
reversed for this test to beam 100 degrees. My radio is a Drake R8B. First VT
ever!

Thank you very much Paul walker and the others involved in this test

Re: [IRCA] 5th DX mid-AMerica Get-Together to be held Sept.14th in Urbana, Illinois

2013-07-31 Thread dxerak

Hi, Rick--
I am not sure at this point whether I will be able to make your GTG. Nina's
family lives in Springfield, so if I go I will stay there and slip over to
Urbana for the day. However, if she has no business there for that day, and
especially if she has to be there a week or two before or after 9/14, we will
not be making a second trip. I'll let you know.

Subject: [IRCA] 5th DX mid-AMerica Get-Together to be held Sept.14th in Urbana,
Illinois

The 5th DX mid-AMerica Get-Together (and the first under that name in nearly 15
years) will be held on Saturday, September 14th starting at 1:00 p.m. Central
Time. The gathering will take place at the Ramada Inn located at 902 West
Killarney Street, just off North Lincoln Avenue, one-half block south of I-74
exit #183 in Urbana, IL. Snacks and beverages (the liquid variety!) will be
provided. Even though the GTG officially begins at 1:00 and lasts on into the
evening, I will be arriving in Urbana on Friday evening, so any early birds are
welcome to drop by and visit. Feel free to bring your radios and/or QSLs. No
station tour is planned as of now, but that could always change (when I hosted
a
GTG in Davenport, Iowa in October 1992, we were treated to a nice -- and
impromptu -- tour of WOC-1420). If you choose to stay overnight, reservations
can be made with the Ramada at 217-328-4400.

Even though the main target demographic of this event is comprised of
Midwestern
DXers, anyone, anywhere can feel free to attend, and this is an all-band (MW,
LW, FM/TV) gathering. If you have any further questions about the get-together
itself, feel free to e-mail me at drummer1965...@yahoo.com. And by all means,
check out the DX mid-AMerica webpage (expertly maintained by South Milwaukee's
John Rieger, editor of the original Hot Tips & Targets magazine that was
published in the 1980s!) at:

Hope to see you on Sept. 14th!

Re: [IRCA] WKBI 1400 PA DX TEST - Did it Run?

2013-03-30 Thread dxerak

Hi, Dave--
I do not doubt that this test went off until I hear different. Any GY DX test
is a crap shoot because of all the sources of QRM, especially music which masks
tones. I think it also depends on conditions. I have only been successful in
hearing three GY tests in the past 20 years-- Brookneal, Seymour and KXXY 1340
Oklahoma City back in 1993. All three were widely heard.

Tuned in from 0158-0210 and I did not hear anything resembling sweep tones

had success with the Seymour, TX GY DX Test, so why not this one? Anyone?

[IRCA] WKBI Test not Heard in Madison WI

2013-03-30 Thread dxerak

Nothing heard from WKBI here in Madison WI. I listened from 10 before until 10
after the hour for all three hours, with the purpose of trying for other
stations on 1400 and holding out the chance that I might hear WKBI in the
process. Thus in all I listened for an hour. Not only did I not hear anything
resembling test material in the ToH news timeframe, but I only got a couple of
brief occasions when anything audible surfaced from the GY jumble, and they
contained no ID'able material.

A big thank you to Paul, Saul and the station personnel who made this test
possible.

[IRCA] KWOS 950 Jefferson City MO Day Facilities on Late?

2013-02-21 Thread dxerak

KWOS 950 Jefferson City MO is making a very rare appearance in Madison WI
tonight, mostly dominating the frequency. Night facilities are listed as 500w
with a pattern that certainly does not favor reception in this direction.
Perhaps it stayed on 5kw ND daytime facilities because of the bad storm that
went through the area today The station is currently ( 2145 CST) running

[IRCA] WOZN 1670 and WOZN-FM 106.7 WI Are Now CBS Sports Radio

2013-01-02 Thread dxerak

Parallel stations WOZN 1670 Madison WI and WOZN-FM 106.7 Mount Horeb WI, the
former WTDY AM and FM, made their anticipated change to sports CBS Sports Radio
at 1100 CST today 1/2. Programming began with a CBS Sports Radio sports
newscast at ToH followed by the Jim Rome Show, which moved to CBS Sports
effective today. The stations use the on-air slogan "The Zone."
.
The former newstalk stations have been in hiaitus since Wednesday November 21
last year, when management fired all but one of its staff and replaced its
programming with Christmas music (while still using the old WTDY calls). Almost
immediately, reliable sources were saying that the stations would eventually
become sports talk as part of the CBS Sports Network. On December 28 calls were
changed to WOZN and a bizarre few days of stunting began. Programming consisted
almost entirely of two heavy metal songs played back-to-back over and over and
over again-- Guns and Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" and Metallica "Wherever I
May Roam." Both were no doubt references to the Jim Rome Show, one of the
feature programs in the new CBS Sports Radio lineup. "Welcome to the Jungle" is
his bumper music and show theme and "Roam" is another way to spell Rome (and
also may refer to that show "roaming " from competitor WTSO 1070 Madison). The
only other programming during this period was a lo!
cally produced agriculture show M-F 5-6 AM by the station's farm director (the
one staffer not fired). The obligatory ToH legal ID was the only thing heard
besides the two songs during the stunting hours-- no off-hour ID's and no
messages as to future format. This programming lasted right up to 11 AM this
morning when thankfully the new format ended it.

[IRCA] Madison WI AM and FM Call Changes

2012-12-29 Thread dxerak

Parallel stations WTDY 1670 AM Madison WI and WTDY-FM 106.7 Mount Horeb WI have
changed calls to WOZN and WOZN-FM respectively. Both had been playing Christmas
songs since 11/21 the day before Thanksgiving, when station management abruptly
fired the staff of the then-newstalk stations and switched to the holiday
music. Speculation began almost immediately that the new post-holiday format
would be sports talk from the CBS Sports Radio network, and the WOZN calls were
requested (as of today the FCC Query sites still have WTDY as their calls).
.
I first noted that the new calls were in place on Friday 12/28. The day
previous the station was still carrying Christmas music and using the WTDY
calls. The station is currently stuntinng, playing only two heavy metal songs
and doing it over and over and over again-- Guns and Roses "Welcome to the
Jungle" and Metallica "Wherever I may Roam." Both seem to be references to Jim
Rome whose sports talk show is moving to CBS Sports Radio-- "Welcome to the
Jungle" is his bumper music and show theme and "Roam" is another way to spell
Rome. The only other programming is the obligatory ToH legal ID, presented once
an hour-- no off-hour ID's and no messages as to future format.
.
My guess is that local listeners will have to put up with this until 1/2/13,
the date that CBS Sports Radio begins a full 24/7 schedule. Also, we probably
will start hearing the speculated station slogan "The Zone" then. I will keep
these lists posted as to when these changes happen.

No, you remembered correctly, Paul. 1620 is being sold to the Fort Wayne
Catholic group that owns WLYV 1450 in Fort Wayne.

WHLY 1580, which has been leased to a different Catholic group, is also
in the process of being sold. It's going to the Spanish-language
broadcasters who run WKAM 1460 in nearby Goshen.

Hi, Rob!

They might have come on a few minutes early, but legally any station with a

you caught them on in a period when technically they should not have been

[IRCA] Summary: 19th Annual Get-together for DXers and Radio Enthusiasts

2012-08-22 Thread dxerak

The 19th annual Madison-Milwaukee Get-together for DXers and Radio Enthusiasts
took place last Saturday August 18 at the home of Bill and Nina Dvorak in
Madison WI. The day was blessed with perfect weather, with clear skies, calm
winds and a very comfortable high of 76 degrees.

Attendees started to arrive and festivities began even before the official 1:00
PM start. Several attendees brought radios and took advantage of a number of
options provided by a temporary antenna farm constructed for the occasion.
Others settled in for the great DX conversation and fellowship that has always
been the mainstay of this event.

Demonstrations during the afternoon included a Perseus software driven radio
presented by Mark Durenberger. Mark brought along his own 30-foot collapsable
flagpole on which he erected a vertical antenna. During the entire get-together
he gave individual demonstrations to anyone requesting one. Craig Menning also
brought along a Perseus and generously offered use of it to anyone who wanted
to experience it hands-on. So it was a great day to learn a lot more about this
great ultra-modern radio.

A second demonstration, this one given by Bill Dvorak and Mark Taylor, was of
Bill's new Double Kaz medium-wave antenna. DXer extraordinaire and antenna
designer Neil Kazaross spent part of the previous weekend helping construct and
tune this Kaz-designed antenna. This particular one is built at a bearing of
280 degrees and the design favors enhancement to the west while nulling
stations to the east.

Another hit of the get-together was Jim Green's Collins-designed Korean War era
R390 receiver. Yes, this is a pre-R390A receiver featuring crystal, not
mechanical, filters. It sounds and works great, and won over many admirers
during the day.

Following the annual group photo (conducted once again by get-together
photographer/DXer Dave Legler), the festivities moved to the Esquire Club
restaurant, site of now seven get-together dinners. The food and service were
great and so were the company and conversation. The program there included
presentation of certificates to those who have attended ten annual
get-togethers (a tradition dating back to 2007). This year's certificates went
to Mike Henke, Fred Kelcz and Kevin McGill. This was followed by door prizes,
another popular get-together feature.

After dinner we returned to Bill and Nina's for the night session. Coffee,
cake, conversation and more monitoring were the activities, with the
get-together winding up at 11 PM.

All in all,Saturday August 18, 2012 was a very nice day for the DXers who
converged on Madison, Wisconsin. Memories linger among the 34 DXers and six of
their family members who joined us. We the organizers have been at this for
quite a while now. We believe we have something special going on here, and
attendee response has only fortified that belief.

[IRCA] Reminder: 19th Annual Madison-Milwaukee DX Get-together August 18

2012-08-08 Thread DXERak
It is not too late to make plans to attend the 19th annual
Madison-Milwaukee Get-together for DXers and Radio Enthusiasts! But time is
getting short
and this will be the last announcement for it on this list.

This popular DX event has been held on the third Saturday in August every
year since 1994.The purpose from the beginning has been to promote
camaraderie among all DXers and radio hobbyists-- "making new friends and
renewing
old friendships." This is an all-band event, and brings together a diverse
group of hobbyists who have one thing in common-- a love of radio.

WHEN: Saturday, August 18 2012, 1:00 PM until approximately 11 PM (come
when you can and leave when you must)

WHERE: 3358 Ridgeway Avenue Madison, Wisconsin

HOSTS: Bill and Nina Dvorak

We have another great day of socializing and radio activities lined up this
year, with some fine demonstrations planned (and of course the annual
photo-- bring along your camera). The annual dinner (participation optional)
will once again be held at the Esquire Club. The program immediately
following dinner includes door prizes and other surprises. An evening session
including coffee, cake and of course conversation follows back at Bill and
Nina's.

For more details about this event, directions, information on
accommodations, or the answer to any event-related question, please e-mail Bill

off-list at _dxerak@aol.com_ (mailto:dxe...@aol.com) (please include "Madison
DX
GTG" in the subject line), and we will e-mail an invitation and information
sheet. But please do it in the next few days because time is short. You
won't want to miss this event.

Over the years interest in and attendance for the GTG has grown, and once
again this year we expect in excess of 30 DXers to attend. We hope that you
will come and promise that you will have a great time if you do. Many of
your fellow IRCA members will be among those attending-- won't you come join
them?

Hope to see you in Madison on August 18!

If you go by the 2012 WRTH, then that is the correct sign-on time on
Saturdays, Robert. However, on ZBVI's website, especially their "Information

the Chigago Three were on all night last night, here's hoping the Chicago

There's just two matters to resolve - defining the time zone where the station

And determining if e-mail QSL requests (leading to eQSLs of course) are
acceptable. Paul and I came up with conflicting times and I'm not convinced
either of is right. So from Paul (with thanks): Saturday March 10th 12am to

KOTZ 720 Kotzebue, Alaska will test for 30 minutes during WGN's off air

[IRCA] WHP and WTKT Tests-- One Heard, One No Trace

2012-02-27 Thread DXERak

My final results on the two 2/27 DX Tests:

WHP 580 Harrisburg PA: Listened five times for test material between 0005
and 0234 ELT. Heard one weak but clear Morse code set of approx. 33 second
duration during the 0105 slot, plus possible code fragments at 0005 and
0205. Nothing heard at 0033 and 0233. This one is NEW !

WTKT 1460 Harrisburg PA: Listened four times between 0015 and 0246 ELT--
0015, 0045, 0215 and 0245. Heard no trace of test material. Strong
in-channel QRM each time from KXNO IA with Fox sports and WKAM IN with SS:MEX
music.
I have logged this one as WCMB in the past, so this would have been a call
change.

A big "Thank You" to Jim Pogue and J.D. Stephens for arranging these tests,

The third time's the charm! At 0105 ELT after failing to hear it at 0005
and 0033, I picked up a weak code set from WHP 580 kHz Harrisburg, PA.
Judging by its lack of strength I have strong suspicions that it was on night
pattern-- it should have blasted in here (distance 670 miles) on this low
frequency if using 5 kw ND. I was just lucky enough to catch code cutting
through the regular programming of other stations.

[IRCA] OF ALL NIGHTS FOR THIS TO HAPPEN....

2012-02-26 Thread DXERak

I tuned in 1550 for the KRPI test only to find that local daytimer WHIT, an
impeccable non-cheater, has their transmitter on and is running an open
carrier! What a night for this to happen! Calls to the owners' various
stations' studio lines were either not answered or I got a message that they
were not available. I am not sure if anyone could do anything even if I roused
someone from the studio, at least in time for me to hear the test.
AARG!

[IRCA] KHWG 750 Fallon NV Once Again Being Heard in Madison WI

2012-02-23 Thread DXERak

I am hearing KHWG 750 Fallon NV once again tonight at my QTH in Madison
WI. This time I got a good listen to the PST (0200 CST) four-station LID
reported by others on this list that includes the playing of the National
Anthem. The four stations are: KHWG 750 Fallon, KHWG-FM 100.1 Crystal NV,
K244CE 96.7 Pahrump NV and K261BZ 100.1 Las Vegas NV. Station coverage is
described as eastern CA, western UT, southern ID and OR and Las Vegas NV. A
message is given in support of the troops, and this is followed by the
Pledge of Allegiance and the Star-Spangled Banner. Format the rest of the time
is Classic Country.

I hope that others benefit from this info and try to get this one in their
logbooks.

Re: [IRCA] KHWG 750 Fallon NV Heard in Madison WI

2012-02-14 Thread DXERak

Hi, Rick!
Congratulations on KHWG! Maybe there are circumstances going on that will
make KHWG a widely heard NV for DXers, similar to the pattern problems that
KXNT 840 was having back in 2004 (making possible my only other NV
logging). It looks like 750 is a frequency for DXers to keep an ear on.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] KHWG 750 Fallon NV Heard in Madison WI

2012-02-13 Thread DXERak

When I saw Mark's e-mail, it struck me that I had logged KNZZ 1100 Grand
Junction CO as a DX test many years ago. Sure enough, I found it in my
logbook, 11/30/98 0206-0209 ELT-- "message explaining the NRC, Morse ID's,
closing message." Morse message was KNZZ repeated 11 times in a high pitch
followed by one time at a lower pitch. My notes also say that I followed 1100
for the next hour only to find no more ID'able material.

I did a little research in e-DXN's PDF archives of past DXN's. I found
that leading up to the date of the test it was not on the CPC calendar-- so no
doubt it was quickly arranged and news of it only got out via internet and
word-of-mouth. The test must have been arranged by the NRC, as several
reporters noted the message about the NRC that I mention above.

Since there was no published pre-notification of the test, there is no
written record of the test's parameters. My notes do say that the test was
scheduled from 0200 to 0400 ELT, but I made no notes on power. I would suspect
that they were running on 50kw ND and not their directional 10kw night
facilities that directs their signal NNW/SSE. It is also possible that they
were running at their CH power of 36kw which first was licensed around this
time..

In DXN 66-11 (12/14/98) and 66-12 (12/21/98) the following East of
Mississippi DX'ers report hearing this test: Greg Myers VA and Gerry Bishop FL
(also Ray Arruda MA and Steve Kennedy PA report this as a tentative). The
following DX'ers West of Mississippi report hearing it: Bob Karchevski CA,
Pete
Taylor WA, Rocky Robello UT, Frank Aden ID and Patrick Griffith CO,

Does anyone else remember hearing this test?

[IRCA] KRSN 1490 Not Heard in Madison WI

2012-01-22 Thread DXERak

Chances of hearing the KRSN 1490 DX test would have been difficult enough
at my distance to start with. However, they are made all but impossible due
to the splatter of local WLMV 1480 with its Latin music format. In order to
null this splatter out I have to turn the loop so that it points SE/NW, or
almost 90 degrees from what is needed, effectively nulling KRSN along with
WLMV. Still, just for the record I did try hearing this test on Sunday
morning (Saturday morning was spent listening to 880 with WCBS off-air). No
luck.

Re: [IRCA] For DXers targetting 1700-XEPE ....

2012-01-17 Thread DXERak
I decided to try to hear what Tim Tromp heard in West Michigan on Saturday
morning-- the Mexican National Anthem played on 1700 kHz at 0800 EST or
1300 UTC. Sure enough, Monday morning at 1256 UTC I heard a weak but
unmistakable playing of the Mexican NA on that frequency, although like Tim I
could
hear no other IDable material that I could link to XEPE..

The assumption that this is XEPE has merit. Not only is XEPE the only
Mexican station on 1700, but 1300 UTC corresponds to 5 AM PST. By regulation
all
Mexican stations must play the National Anthem at midnight and 5 AM local
time, so this station was performing its regulatory obligation by playing
it then. Baja California state, location of XEPE, is the only state in
Mexico in the Pacific time zone.

Thank you for the tip, Tim!

An English station got the biggest plum on the tree when it (CKGM 990) was
allowed to move to 690, a former French service frequency. I would think
that you would almost have to grant an application on ex-English 940 to a
French service given this fact. The awarding of 990 to French is probably to
balance services. In the end you still have two of the three (690, 940 and
990) frequencies with French services and one with English. Just speculation
on my part.

What an odd way to end things! Ironically today October 1st is CBE 1550's

I spent some time this morning reviewing my overnight Perseus recording of
1550 around midnight ELT in hopes of reconstructing the rather jumbled mix
of reception at the time of the sign off of CBE. What follows is a
minute-by-minute replay of what I heard here in Pennsylvania. I hope it
might help some folks make sense of what they were hearing during that
time.
It also introduces an interesting twist to CBE's operating frequency in the
final moments of their broadcast.

At around 1158pm CBE is on top with Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap program
leading out with the Beach Boy's theremin on "Good Vibrations". WDLR-OH is
in 2nd place with regional Mexican music and WZRK-WI is in third place with
a mention of avenue1550.com.

At 1159 ET there was a CBC Radio 1 local ID with only the 97.5 FM frequency
mentioned. Over the next 5 minutes CBE faded and WDLR dominated but CBE was
still in. At 1204:30 the local and regional weather was being given and
CBE's audio dropped mid-sentence at 1205:00.

At 1205:35 the audio returned for about 5 seconds, still in the middle of
the weather, but the carrier frequency was actually 1550.05 rather than
the
previous 1550.00 (I can zero-beat the sideband audio and tell it's CBE, and
the carrier line on 1550.05 was extremely strong). The carrier dropped
abruptly again in mid-sentence at 1205:40 (there were at least 6 other
carriers on 1550 spread between 1550.00 and 1550.02 at this point, by the
way). Between 1206 and 1210 ET there is no sign of any CBE audio but at
1210:15 the audio from CBE comes back in the middle of "Maggie May" by Rod
Stewart, back on frequency at 1550.00.

"Maggie May" stays on top  with a brief dip at 1211, ending at 1214:10;
Randy
starts to introduce the next song, saying "the Beat Farmers are a cowpunk
band from San Diego..." and the audio drops mid-sentence at 1214:21 ET.
Then, at 1215:48 the carrier and audio came back in the middle of their
"Happy Boy" song ("hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba") and the carrier is now
back on 1550.05 kHz.

At 1216 Randy starts to introduce Joni Mitchell but the Spanish music is
beating it out. At 1217 Joni's song "Carey" pops through and is pretty
strong from 1218-1219, ending at 1220. At 1220:30 he introduces the next
song by Joanie Sommers "Johnny Get Angry, Johnny Get Mad". At 1220:45 a
promo for "Big Ed's Chowder House" and The Avenue 1550 pops on top of CBE
but Joanie's song comes back from 1221 to 1223. Randy begins to introduce
The Troggs "Wild Thing" but then the audio is gone at 1224:40, presumeable
for the last time. After that it's WDLR's " la que buena " slogan, more
Spanish music and some unidentified vocal folk-ish music from presumed
WZRK.
Never got to hear "Wild Thing". I stopped checking the recording at this
point, presuming they are off for good.

The off-frequency carrier is still there even now (1100 am ELT Saturday)
although it appears to be closer to 1550.04. I wonder if this indicates
they
may return with a tape loop as some have speculated. I also wonder why
their
carrier frequency changed at the end? I cannot recall there ever being an
off-frequency station on 1550.

Hi, Saul--
According to the NRC AM Log they are U3, which means that they are
full-time directional, using the same pattern day and night. That pattern has
a
null toward me and is directed toward you, whether it's one watt or 1000. If
they are using their day power at night with this full-time pattern, it
would certainly explain why you are hearing it at night and at least partly
explain why I am not.

Russ, my experience is that they do frequent "Avenue 1550" and/or "Timeless
Cool" ID's, plus frequent PSA's for Lake Geneva organizations. They don't
do well here at night, even at the short distance of 59 miles, because of
their directional pattern (probably developed at least in part to protect
the older WHIT). Their pattern is directed northeast/southwest, probably
accounting for how well Rick Dau hears them in South Omaha. It may handicap
your ability to hear them in Philadelphia.

1550 is a real jungle here at night, and I don't think that is going to
change with the demise of CBE-- maybe it will even intensify.

When you review your tapes, Russ, I would suggest you concentrate on WZRK.

I have seen a handful of DXers on this and the NRC list suggest that they
might have heard WHIT 1550 last night. This station is a daytimer with an
oldies format, licensed to Madison WI. As one who lives in Madison and spent
much of the night parked on 1550, I can state with 100% certainty that they
were not on the air last night.

WZRK Lake Geneva WI has a night authorization of one watt. I know for a
fact that previous owners signed off at sunset because they deemed the tiny
power too little to bother with. The present ownership not only stays on all
night, but apparently does so at the full daytime power of 1000 watts (or
at least a good fraction thereof). As a result, they are frequently
reported over a wide area.

BTW, WZRK's format is not oldies. The station describes the format thusly:

“Radio station Avenue 1550 (WZRK) serves Lake Geneva with Timeless Cool
Music. It’s easy to listen to, but not easy listening. With music from Ray
Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Steely Dan, Billie Holiday and Van Morrison, it's
the mix you have been looking for on your radio."

had repeated whistles sounding like the call to the hounds in fox hunting.
This used to be typical to some sort of LA station years back.

I also had a fairly strong WSDK-CT with religion and SRN news.

Only bits and pieces of CBE heard based on the reports of others. I had
both the Joni Mitchell song and the "Whiter Shade of Pale" but couldn't tell
who that was, and reading the posts suggests there was confusion from
others bewteen CBE and someone else.

Both WZRK and WHIT are needed here, so I'll go back and try to match up my
recordings with what's been reported to see if I can pull anything out.

Any help on the SS mentioned above would be appreciated, and I can supply
a recording of the anthem and the whistles if needed.

Hi, Rick and Tim--
I heard this one too, after Rick tipped me off about St. Joe (which I
couldn't hear here). It was mostly weak in the jumble here, although at times
it
broke through. The only problem was that I was hearing Southmoore as
"Southport" and the Sapulpa team referred to as "the Deacons." My internet
searches were coming up zero. Finally I was able to hear the one HS clearly as
Southmoore, find that they were indeed playing Sapulpa tonight, and
correctly ID Sapulpa's mascot name as the Chieftans, not Deacons. In the end
a
great sleuth job, but the station itself was unneeded here.

[IRCA] Friday Night Football

2011-08-19 Thread DXERak
I just learned today that this is the first weekend of the new Wisconsin
High School football season. Noting the report that there was already one
game in East Tennessee heard last week, I would suspect that quite a few
states are beginning their seasons already. I will be at the dials tonight and
will post what I am hearing. I hope that other DXers will be doing the same.

I know of only three Wisconsin stations that will be broadcasting HS
football tonight:
740 WRPQ Baraboo (U1 250 6) Oregon Panthers vs. Baraboo Thunderbirds
pregame 1845 CDT
1430 WBEV Beaver Dam (U2 1000 1000) Waupun Warriors vs. Beaver Dam
Golden Beavers
1570 WSCO Appleton (U1 1000 331) Appleton North Lightning vs. Menasha
Blue Jays pregame 1840 kickoff 1900 CDT

There are no doubt more, but because of the Packers exhibition game and
continued interest in Brewer baseball some regulars are broadcasting those
games instead of HSFB (local 1070 WTSO U4 1 5000 is one of these, picking
up the Brewers while Brewers affiliate WIBA 1310 carries the Packers.

WIBW atop WTKY and XEMU on 580. A decent het on 702 likely from Australia at
times, when I phased WLW, but nothing I could claim as audio this time. This
one has been better. Only a very weak het on 738 where there's usually
more signal near sunrise. 720 was interesting as I noted SS mx right thru WGN

even mix on peaks. 710 had an ID at 0600 from rare KCNC Amarillo.

All in all not a terribly interesting morning. Back to bed (I hope). 73 KAZ

Re: [IRCA] KSAZ DX Test

2011-04-24 Thread DXERak
I have a few segments of my recording to review from when I stepped away
from the radio, but to this point have nothing to indicate that I heard KSAZ
tonight. Mostly what I was hearing were WTCM with C2C and WIBW with SNR,
plus one ID from WKTY which also carries SNR. I also heard bits and pieces
of Ranchero mx which I suspected was from XEMU, an occasional visitor at
night; I was glad to see that Tom Trump in W MI did ID XEMU, strengthening my
suspicion about this one.

It is too bad about the CD, without which a difficult catch became even
more so.

Re: [IRCA] KUDL 1660

2011-04-04 Thread DXERak
I heard KUDL earlier tonight and logged them as a call change. They have a
very interesting legal ID featuring a practice that gained some prevalence
a few years ago, especially on FM stations-- the weak, almost inaudible
call letter set. The KUDL legal reads:

"You're listening to Radio Bach [soft and quick 'KUDL'], Kansas City's HD
classical station, 96.5 FM HD2 [soft and quick 'KRBZ'], 1660 AM, and
streaming on the web at radiobach, com."

Considering it's the closest station to me on 1660,
its signal doesn't get out very well. Barely audible
during the day, and at night covered by KQWB. Other
KC stations like KCSP, KCMO and WHB have listenable

Re: [IRCA] WYTH was MIA in So Calif; when's next DX test?

2011-03-19 Thread DXERak

pianoplayer88...@yahoo.com writes:

I tried with my PL-606 & Select-A-Tenna to receive 1250-WYTH, but I never
even heard any hint of code or sweep tones, and gave up about 15 minutes
into the second test. (I had listened for the entire first test.) Other
stations (at least 3 that would have been individually identifiable) on 1250
were just too much for 1kW from GA to punch through, and the splatter from
1240-KNSN 11.2mi W of me didn't help, either.

Anyone know when the next DX test is, especially one west of the eastern
NM, CO, WY, MT borders? Some better frequencies for me would be 560, 580,
730 (E-NE), 820 (N), 900 (E), 1500 or 1570 as those usually only have very
weak signals. Strong locals that would make DXing on those frequencies
difficult, unless the target is 90° off, are 600 (W), 690 (SW), 760 (NW), 910
(N), 1130 (N), 1170 (N), 1360 (W), 1470 (SW). So, anyone know when would be
the next test that I would have a reasonable chance at logging?

There are no DX tests currently scheduled. I would consider it highly
unlikely that we will see any more tests until at least Fall, unless one or
more of the three mid-February tests that were canceled are rescheduled (Paul
Walker, can you throw any light on this?). March tests are rare and April
and beyond almost unheard of in recent years.

[IRCA] WKVQ Test heard in Madison WI

2011-03-11 Thread DXERak
Easy catch here in Madison WI despite the efforts of KXEL, which is by far
the dominant 1540 here, to bury it. Most of the time WKVQ was just below
KXEL in signal strength, and VID's were quite readable when presented. Morse
code call sets were strong and clear. The presentation of Christmas carols,
although welcome, reminded me that this winter continues to go on too
long. :-(

A big thank you to all involved in this test! On to next week, which looks
like it is going to be much more difficult than tonight's test was.

[IRCA] Hearing WJNJ 1320 Jacksonville FL in Madison WI

2011-02-04 Thread DXERak

WJNJ Jacksonville FL ("Pure Radio", "Jacksonville Needs Jesus") heard
w/REL programming, legal ID at 2000 CST. Had been following this one for
nearly
an hour. Quality of the signal varies but at times is quite good. This one
is new here! Rare FL nighttime reception. Local WIBA 1310 is currently not
running its IBOC.

Some great radio tonight on WGN 720 as the "Steve and Johnnie" program is

Re: [IRCA] KRMG 740

2011-02-01 Thread DXERak
KRMG is making a very rare appearance in Madison WI tonight in the CFZM
null. The last time it reached here with even a little regularity was in the
period after CBL went off and (then) CHWO came on.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] KFAB'S IBOC off right now

2011-01-31 Thread DXERak
I understand that St. Louis and surrounding counties are being hit by ice
storms as part of the huge winter storm. I imagine that KMOX is doing quite
a bit of storm coverage. Could KFAB's IBOC be off so as not to interfere
with the KMOX signal?
