David, I think the SAPI voices are very user friendly. I'm using Karen
right now and I also like Daniel. I just happen to like these British
voices. They are nice and clear and crisp.

I hope others out there will try them.

Hi Walt
Tried to use your instructions and when I checked the sappy voices,
jaws stopped talking. Did it twice with same result. Would I see a list
of
sappy voices if they were on my computer.

[JAWS-Users] Re: a strange issue with the properties dialogue in IE and jaws

2006-12-06 Thread Walt Smith

Just unload JAWS and restart it or reboot your computer. All that using the
/default flag does is to load JAWS using only the files in the shared files
folder, bypassing anything you've modified. To do the repair, put the 7.0 CD
into your hard drive and allow it to autostart and select repair. Like I
said, this won't affect your user settings in any way.

Well, I mentioned checking for new video drivers and, of course, always
check the display settings in the Control Panel. If you're not using 1024 X
768 pixels and 32-bit color (assuming Windows XP), use those settings.

Sarah,

I don't really think it's a Jaws issue. At this point I'm thinking it
might have something to do with our video settings.
If I figure it out, I'll be sure to let you know.

[JAWS-Users] temp files

2006-12-06 Thread Stu

I use the following on my 98 machine, will it work also on a XP machine?

Can I delete tmp files?

I've given this hint before and it's one of the really useful ones
that I've
picked up over the years. Open the Find Files utility and search for:

*.tmp,*.chk,~*.*

Note that the items are separated by a comma and no spaces. Also,
note that
the last item is preceded by a tilde and if you omit this, you'll get
hits
on every file in your computer, which you most definitely do _not_
want to
do.

Run this search and when it completes, press Control+A to select all,
then
the delete key and answer "Y" to the prompt asking if it's okay to
delete
everything. Then comes the really good part. Press Alt+F while still
in
the Find Files utility and save the search to your Desktop. From now
on,
you can run it regularly to clean up your disk. I've used this for a
couple
of years with no problems.
The second thing I would advise is to download and run ad-aware and
get rid
of all of that spy crap in your computer. "

[JAWS-Users] Re: jaws 8 and internet explorer

2006-12-06 Thread Bill Gallik

Leonard,

I take it from your post that you're still using IE 6? Which OS are you
running?

Here's a problem I've encountered with JAWS 8 and IE 6:

- I open IE

- I open one of several links to personal financial institutions.

- I use th e "F" command to move to the login prompts (i.e., User ID:).

- I turn on "Forms Mode" in order to fill in the requisite information

- I tab to the next field (usually "Password:").

- I hear the prompt "User Id:" instead of "Password: " (or whatever it
should be).

- I tab around to other (not necessarily form fields) and continue to hear
"User ID:" instead of the true label for the link.

This happens only I've gone into "Forms Mode," but once I do this all other
links labels are no longer read appropriately.

I'm using Windows 2000 Professional.

FS is aware of this problem and it has been escalated via a trouble ticket.

Personally, I do think FS does have their act together!

[JAWS-Users] Re: temp files

2006-12-06 Thread Bill Gallik

I ran into a minor problem using this terrific tip from Stu.

It seems that Norton Anti-Virus has created a temp file named 044nav.tmp and
when I tried to delete all the listed files I consistently got a Critical
Error telling me that the file was in use (by Norton Anti Virus presumably).
Yet when I turned off Auto Protect I was still unable to delete this file.

The work-around I used was to select the file in question from the search
list, arrow to the file listed directly above it and do a "Select all to the
top" and then delete those. I then did a "Select all to the bottom" and
deleted the remaining files.

Now, what do I do with that dang Norton file -- it's a zero-length file by
the way?

[JAWS-Users] Re: temp files

2006-12-06 Thread David Ferrin

You can't delete that particular file because Norton uses it to do it's
thing. I know because I formerly ran Norton myself. Even if you change the
attributes so you could delete it Norton will just simply recreate the
thing.

2006-12-06 Thread Walt Smith

That tip is one I discovered and that's an old list message that I sent to,
I think, the JFWlite list years and years ago. While it may work under XP,
it doesn't get everything. Also, I don't think that those instructions will
work using the XP version of the Find utility, since it's been completely
rewritten for XP. I've never seen an XP equivalent for this tip.

What you _can_ safely do under XP is to delete the following folders on a
regular basis. Don't worry--they'll be re-created when needed:

C:\Windows\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp

You could write a batch file that would run every time your computer starts
that would delete these two folders.

[JAWS-Users] My troubles with JFW 8.

2006-12-06 Thread Max Robinson

Hi all. I just got my CD and installed jaws 8.0. I am happy with eloquence
so I didn't mess with the extra voices. When I press the control key to
stop jaws from talking there is that little bong sound indicating an error.
But there is no error message, just the bong. Some times this happens at
the end of a message in outlook express without my doing anything. When I
run the spell checker in outlook express jaws says blank instead of saying
the miss spelled word. Someone mentioned in passing on the handyman list
that he was having the same trouble. As I type this I am running jaws 7.0.
Last night I was using jaws 8 with MS word and suddenly it stopped reading
everything. Up and down arrow or left and right arrow, all it would say was
blank. Maybe it was swearing at me. Then when I pressed say all it
crashed. I don't know about anyone else but I am beginning to give window
eyes a good hard look.

[JAWS-Users] Re: My troubles with JFW 8.

2006-12-06 Thread Walt Smith

Max -

1. What you're hearing is the TopAndBottomEdgeAlert sound and there's a way
to turn that off that I can post if enough people say they want to know how
to do it.
2. The spell check problems have been present for years and date back to at
least 6.X, so they aren't new.
3. When I've used Microsoft Word, I haven't seen anything like the problem
you report.

I assume that you've reported these issues to FS.

The problem with almost any of these programs is that they very well may
remove things that you _don't_ want removed. Some will remove the Internet

It's funny you mention the cookies thing. Other people will say just the
opposite they will delete all of them every few times they boot up. Don't
most spyware and ad ware program remove them?

[JAWS-Users] Re: temp files

2006-12-06 Thread Walt Smith

Al -

This is/was Walt, not Rick.

Most spyware and adware programs remove _dangerous_ cookies, but not _all_
cookies. Many cookies store preferences and other site-specific information
that would have to be reset if all cookies were deleted. The spyware and
adware programs know which ones to delete by name, but these other general
cleanup programs aren't that intelligent. Just for example, the information
about my Google.com preferences (how many hits to display, etc.) is stored
in a cookie and it would be stupid to delete it and then have to re-enter
the information every time I visit Google. You'll hear that all cookies
should be removed weekly or whatever, but this is just the kind of
misinformation that gets started and then, can't be stopped.

Rick

I believe the last time I ran a disk cleanup on Win XP it gave one many
check boxes that could be check or uncheck depending on one's preference.
It's funny you mention the cookies thing. Other people will say just the
opposite they will delete all of them every few times they boot up. Don't
most spyware and ad ware program remove them?

thanks
Al

[JAWS-Users] Cleaning out the windows registry.

2006-12-06 Thread Lisa
Hello everyone,
There was some talk on another list that I'm on about the program RegScrubXP.
It is suppose to clean out the junk in your windows registry. My question
is, is this something that I should be doing, and if so, is this program
accessible with jaws?
Take care,
Lisa
