[JAWS-Users] Jaws find command not reading properly
Hi list, I have noticed something with the Jaws find command (control F) with Jaws 8.0. Usually when I search for a word, phrase or numeral etc, Jaws would read the sentence in which the found occurrence of the search string is found. This lets you know, if that occurrence of the search string, is the one you want. If it isn't, then you just press spacebar and jaws takes you to the next one and once again reads the sentence, in which the search string is contained. However, I notice now, that when I do a search, Jaws just reads my search string. I have to select cancel, in order to read the sentence. I then have to go back into the search dialogue box to repeat the search. This only seems to have started today. Has anyone else experienced this? More importantly, how do you correct it? Like I said, I am using Jaws 8.0 and Windows XP home. thanks Jason --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list%40googlegroups.com/ In order to contact the management team simply fill out the following form found at: http://www.jaws-users.com/contact.php You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups JAWS Users List group. [JAWS-Users] Re: web mail
Victor, Thanks for your help. I will pass these instructions on to my students. As for sending attchments, we can just give it a whirl. I'll let you know when we try it. Thanks again for your time and assistance. - Original Message - From: Victor Gouveia To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2007 5:43 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: web mail Hi Tammy, Composing e-mails are just as easy, if not easier, depending on the version of Jaws you have. I am currently running Jaws 7 and I find that once I press the navigation hotkey to get to the compose button with the B key and hit enter, Yahoo typically focuses on the to field of the next page where you compose the message. At that point, all you have to do is press enter to go to forms mode and you can tab through the different fields. Having said that, there is a caveat in this process. First off, I don't know what it's like to send attachments with web mail, so I can't really comment on that part of it, so please try at your own risk, and if it behooves you, please report back what you find as I am interested in that also. Secondly, the spell checker is atrocious to use, and completely inaccessible, or rather, a complete pain in the ass to use with Jaws. It could also be that I didn't have enough patience to learn to use it properly, or that Yahoo may have possibly made the process better to use for blind and visually impaired users of their site since the last time I tried to use it, but in any case, the same use at your own risk applies here also. One thing I find easier to use is possibly composing the e-mail in another program, such as Outlook Express or Microsoft Word or Word Pad, use the spell checker in those programs, then cut and paste the result into the message field of the web mail message. I find this a great deal easier, especially if I have a really long piece to compose, or if I'm not feeling particularly well that day and I make a number of mistakes. Either way, you can decide if you want to try those aspects of the process. Hope this helps. [JAWS-Users] Re: turning off the monitor
There probably is a command to either turn off your monitor, or at least turn down the brightness. But it depends on what brand you are using. For a Dell, you can do a function key down arrow to dim the brightness, but don't know of any command to actually turn it off. On a Sony you can do a function key f5 to dim it, but again, no command to actually turn it off. If you have someone sighted to look at your functions keys along the top, you should see a picture telling you how you can use that key along with the function key. Don't be confused, the functions keys across the top, f1 - f12, or different than the stand alone function key located elsewhere on your keyboard. Interesting that you say that. I've never had a problem with using that function until my Dell Latitude D420. When the laptop is in the docking station and I switch the display to external only, JAWS is not happy. If I leave it on both laptop and external, JAWS is fine. [JAWS-Users] Re: turning off the monitor
Actually, I am trying to create a Jaws training document for a presentation I'm doing in April and switching back to the email messages to give me a break. Having different responses to a question is good since it gives different options for the same question. We all do things different on here and it all depends on what a person gets used to doing. Sometimes I think that having just one way to perform a function would be good and then it wouldn't get so confusing to a new user. But then it is nice to have that selection on how to do a task. [JAWS-Users] Re: DecTalk Access32 as default synthesizer
Then you should be able to just move it to the number 1 position. Make sure it is exactly as it appears in whatever position it is now. I don't remember what the driver name for dec access is, or I would give you a better answer. It should look something like this: Synth1Name=decaccess Synth1LongName=DecAccess32Software Synth1Driver=decaccess Again, I am not sure what the driver name for Dec Access is, but since it is already listed in your .ini file, then it shouldn't be a problem for you. I would make a backup copy of your jfw.ini file before you modify it. Don't be confused, the functions keys across the top, f1 - f12, or different than the stand alone function key located elsewhere on your keyboard. That sounds strange. I didn't have a problem updating JAWS 8 on my system and I'm also using Windows XP. Hi Bill, I too did the upgrade and I'm using windows xp. I did to get as far as trying with IE7 because what started happening is that the say all command went weird. It started telling something like unknown function is magic running? I don't even have a copy of magic in the same house, let alone installed on the computer. When I tried running a repair, I was told that some file was missing and so it could not be repaired. I had to end up uninstalling the whole thing and reinstalling the original jfw8 to get things back to normal. S not just 2000 pro is having challenges, but others too. Hi, I tried to use the latest version of JAWS (8.0.1163) and found it screwed up in Internet Explorer 6 even worse than earlier versions of JAWS 8. I am one of the rare birds using Windows 2000 Professional so I'm not able to install IE 7 so am forced to remain with IE 6. Now when I open IE JAWS 8 (8.0.1163) tells me that all links have the same label as the first one it happens to land on when IE is opened. Even worse, if I shut down JAWS 8 and bring it back up again it doesn't say anything at all as I tab around a web page. If I resort to the JAWS Cursor I can tell that I'm positioned on links of differing labels. My point here is to advise those of you using Windows 2000 Professional that once again attempting to use JAWS 8 may not be an efficient use of your time -- not at this point any way! [JAWS-Users] Re: DecTalk Access32 as default synthesizer
I was wondering why it is taking 2-3 days for my post to go from me to the list. I was trying to add to threads in a timely manner and my replies weren't getting into the thread for a couple of days. I contacted Google about this and found out the owner has the ability to moderate the contents added or with held from the list. Is that what is happening here? Is that why my posts and replies are not coming into the thread for 2-3 days? Is that why *some* of mine haven't made it to the list? - Eliminate annoying spam! David recommended that I look on the JAWS users site for setting up a default synth, but that didn't solve my problem. Dec Access32 needs to be loaded and I need to know how I set this up so that it will happen automatically when I start JAWS. I hope this is clear enough for someone to give me an answer. Do I need to put something in the .ini file or how do I get Dec Access32 to come up as the JAWS synth? If you do get it installed, the best you can do is this: 1. go into the Jaws default configuration manager and then synthesizer options. 2. if the Deck talk shows up there, then select it as your default, then close the dialogue, and save your settings when leaving the configuration manager. 3. re-boot the computer, and see what happens. [JAWS-Users] Re: turning off the monitor
You don't run the program as normal. you make a shortcut to wizmo and put it someware then edit the properties of that shortcut to meat your actions such as this C:\3archives\programs\wizmo.exe wizmo reboot that will tell my computer to reboot if I hit enter on it. TC SAG Well, I don't even get a chance to install it. When I activate the executable file, I get a dialogue of why the program was created and an exit button, but no next, setup or anything else. I can only read the information by using the Jaws cursor, so was only wondering what I am missing. I know, I know, I am missing the setup button. [JAWS-Users] Re: Out Typing Jaws 8.1163
I always have keyboard echo turned off. I am a fast typist and learned touch typing too many years ago to say, so having to listen to JAWS echo every thing I type drives me mad. That's the only solution I can come up with for you. Have you speed fingers been able to come up with a fix? FYI, I was trained as a Columbus typist, this means you pick a key and land on it. Thanks in advance for any help.
