Tell he rto uncheck the first check box and leave the

Hi David,

The first control you'll get to when you choose the
setting I told you about is a check box. In your friend's
case, this box is checked, so just uncheck it. I have
found that this comes as a preset function when installing
office 2003.

Open a new message and go to the view menu.

Arrow down until you see "BCC" field and press enter.

I totally agree with David, but in this case, that's the
perment setting for my outlook.
I somehow suspect its a bigger issue though because when
using the realspeak voices, my jaws cursor won't change
voices.
Like I said on Saturday, I'm beginning to develop an

FS told me to download the newest update completely and

I have version 8.0 and i wanted to update from the FS site. i was told to

changed a JAWS file. Anyway, i looked all over the place where i thought

Hi Arianna,
You didn't say which version of Jaws,
but try this:
Put your Jaws installation cd in for the version you want to repair.
The setup program should start automatically, and inform you that Jaws is
already installed,
and then ask you what you want to do.
This is where you will get the repair option.
No, your mind didn't go blank, FS changed things a little. smile.

Where do i go to do a repair on JAWS? I couldn't find it in utilities nor
in tools. I couldn't do it under add/remove programs either. My mind must
have gone blank not to be able to find this.

hi all,

I had unsubscribed from this list a while ago before a vacation and I've
just come back. I saw an announcement for an update to JAWS 8, and I wanted
to know how people like it. I've had so many problems with JAWS 8, as I
wrote about a few months ago, and I'm a little concerned about updating. on
the other hand, if it fixes the things that were causing problems, that
would be great. I didn't see much about fixing problems with IE6 in the
list of new things in this update. What do you all think of the update?

By the way, I have resubscribed two days ago but am not receiving any mail
yet, so I hope this does get through. it doesn't seem possible this list
hasn't had any mail in two days and right after an update.

thanks for any info on the update!

Sherry

Hi List,

Last evening I wrote concerning the "Say all" challenge I
was having with the latet jfw update. A problem I noticed
cropping up with the one released in February as well.
I delted the files suggested by FS and still no
improvement.
Imagine my absolute dismay this morning when I switched on
my computer and the only responses I got from jfw was that
"unknown function..." nothing worked. left arrow, right
arrow, say all, say line, nada.
it would not respond to anything. In the end, I had to
uninstall the whole jfw8 and reinstall. Of course I
reverted to the first version of 8.
I'm still waiting to get another response from FS, but for
now, I think I'm sticking to that version of jfw, these
updates just plain hate me!

Those are the correct places to look all right, besides the JSB file is the
only one that jaws is interested in. It's the binary compilation of the
original source code converted in to machine language. It looks like more
research needs to be done in this area before further advice can be given
out, sorry for now.

Kerry, look in the explore my settings sub menu of your particular version
of jaws. Once in there obviously keep hitting the letter D until you land on
the default files. In other words they wish you to delete files that you
have modified yourself thus restoring their original default configuration
settings. Unfortunately this means any changes in there will need to be
reapplied.

Back in February, when the public beta for JFW came out, I downloaded and
installed and immediately started having some issues. One such was a
message which came up whenever I did a JFW say all in microsoft outlook
telling me about a conflict with magic running. I don't even own a copy of
magic.
I reset the machine to the orinigla jfw8 and then a strange started to
happen. When using the realspeak voices, jfw would not switch voices for
the jaws cursor.
I lived with it for a while and only yesterday when I contacted FS about the
problem, they advised that I should again upgrade to the newest release
which came out in April.

I've now got the same problem when reading email and though I tried to
follow the instructions followed last time, they're not working.
FS told me to delete the default.jsb and default.jss files, but I can't seem
to locate the second. does anyone have any suggestions?

[JAWS-Users] Telephone Numbers

2007-04-15 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi there listers.

A though occurred to me today while I was writing a message to someone. It
could be rather dangerous placing your contact numbers in your signature to
emails. We do so much forwarding and there are so many people out there who
we don't know personally, that we could be opening up ourselves to some
unwanted calls.
I'd like to suggest that you think about I ane specially in settings like
this one where we have over 260 people receiving our every message, you may
want to take on my suggestion. If someone really needs to contact you, they
can always email you off list!

Just a though.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws equivalent for MAC

2007-04-12 Thread Kerryann Ifill
HI there,

To the best of my knowledge, there is no such programme as Jaws for Mac. I
understood that Macs (especially those running the os10 and up) have their
own built in screen readers.
I have one in the office, but I have to confess I've never sedit, just heard
the screen reader ever so often.

Hi folks,

Could be I am just missing it, but I was tooling around the Freedom
Scientific site looking for Jaws for MAC if it exists. Nothing popped up in
the Jaws headquarters. I may be doing some work with a company that almost
exclusively uses MAC (and I have a MAC that my film editor works on here at
my home) so I am thinking about finding a screenreader for it. Obviously, I
would want to use Jaws since I know it, but if there isn't such a thing,
maybe somebody could tip me off to something similar? Anybody using both a
MAC and a PC? Thanks.

I'm beginning to suspect its more of a overall system challenge that simply
a JFW one.

Hi Kerryann,
If Jaws comes up talking when the computer boots, then it is running as a
service.
Unless, it is running from a shortcut in the startup folder.
At any rate, if this is when you are experiencing the problem, try
unloading, and then re-loading Jaws, and try setting the voices again.
Doing this will cause Jaws to run as an application.
I have found in some instances, that Jaws will have a problem with sappi
voices when it is running as a service.

This morning, as I was reading a document and jotting notes down on te

I even tried switching to pen book and have it read and tried to switch back

Oh well! wishful thinking I guess!

[JAWS-Users] Re: Making a call in Skype.

2007-03-13 Thread Kerryann Ifill

Hi Max,

If you go tot the freedom scientific homepage, you'll find the link to a
skype page. There are downloadable scripts there for skype which when
installed, will make your skyping a whole lot easier.
Even without those, skype is rather accessible and David told ou precisely
how to achieve calling.
By the way, escape ends the call just as swiftly as your other option, but
only one key.

You can even close the skype window altogether and end the call through the
system tray.

Hi Lisa,

I have a similar problem, or at least, I had a similar problem as you.

I was running Jaws 7 with Xp home, and installed Office 2007 as an upgrade
to my 2003.

If you think the menu items are screwed up, you ought to see how it displays
an already modified document.

According to my brother, 2007 displays almost like Internet Explorer 7, with
tabs and the like to navigate between multiple documents.

If you use the classic shortcut keys, such as alt-F or alt-T or other
shortcut keys that you use to access the old menu bars, you'll find that
they do work, however, they open a new set of menus.

The menus, as you've already heard, have been completely re-designed and are
called a ribbon, or an information ribbon, so some such name like that.

In any case, when I opened an already modified document, such as a user's
manual for my MP3 player, it displayed the multiple pages side by side, and
when I used the arrow keys to go through the document, it would read the
information on both sides of the window.

So, if the first line on page 1 was hello, and the first line on page 2 was
goodbye, when I got there with the arrow, Jaws would read it as hello
goodbye.

Very confusing if you don't know what you're reading.

As I had already read the particular user's manual I opened, I knew what the
first page should say, and was confused when Jaws read something from page
two.

In any case, as was stated on another response to your question, you'll have
to upgrade to Jaws 8 to use Office 2007, or just keep trying to make the
current version of Jaws you have work with it. I wasn't able to do this and
had to uninstall 2007 and go back to 2003.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any time to play around with it as I needed MS
Word for work I was doing at the time, but if I had had more time, I would
have played around with it and tried to see if I could make it work with
earlier versions of Jaws.

The good news is that Office 2003 is very compatible with Jaws 8 and lower,
and I have had no problems using it.

In fact, I think you'll enjoy using it more than HJ Pad, and even more than
Office 2007.

I mean, comparing HJ Pad to Office 2003 is like comparing a farm wagon to a
Rolls Royce, the two are miles apart from each other in terms of what you
can do, but if you just want to write letters and the like, farm wagons
aren't that bad as letter writing goes, but if you can afford it, I would
definitely go for the Rolls Royce.

Victor

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws and Microsoft Word 2007

2007-03-11 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi Lisa,

Sounds like you have a couple of problems.
First off, support for Microsoft office 2007 starts with version 8 I
believe, so I do think your version is too old.
Secondly, these they have changed the entire layout for office 2007. It
think now they call them ribbons instead of tool bars or some such thing.
Someone else on here may be able to give you some extra tips, but I think
you'll need to upgrade your jfw to get maximum use out of your new
programme.

Hello everyone,
When I write letters I have always used the HJ pad, and I found it quite
easy to use. I recently purchased and installed Microsoft office student
and home adition 2007 on my computer. This includes Microsoft word which I
always wanted to have because I thought it would be better then the HJ pad.
I opened up a blank document in Word to write a letter, and I hit my alt
key, so I could have a look at the menues. All it said was home tab press
control tab to switch pages. I have never used Word 2003 with jaws, but a
friend told me that the menues are totally accessible with jaws. I am
running jaws 6, so I'm wondering if my version of jaws is too old for this
newest version of Microsoft Word, or has Microsoft totally changed the way
Word 2007 looks? When I rooted jaws to PC I didn't find things like file,
edit, view, tools, and format. If anyone could help figure this out i'd
really appreciate it!!! I have windows XP home adition, and I'm running
jaws 6.
Take care,
Lisa ,

Hi Larry,

Depending on the version of windows media player you're using, you will need
to download another component of the programme in order for it to work.
I've never had any luck with burning CDs in that programme however and I
know most people swear by Nero.

One of the others would have to guide you on that though.

I had the same problem that Kerry is referring to on my work computer but
not my home computer. When you do the say all command JAWS says" unknown
function called to is magic running" I called FS and they told me to do the
falling steps.

1. Go to programs on the start menu
2. Find JAWS 8.0
3. Go to explorer JAWS sub menu.
4. Then go to explorer my settings and press enter.
5. Then he told me to delete the .JSB and the .JSS source file and then
restart jaws.

I did the above steps and JAWS worked like it was suppose to. He said that
a lot of people have had the same problem.

Hi,

I tried to use the latest version of JAWS (8.0.1163) and found it screwed up
in Internet Explorer 6 even worse than earlier versions of JAWS 8. I am one
of the rare birds using Windows 2000 Professional so I'm not able to install

tells me that all links have the same label as the first one it happens to
land on when IE is opened. Even worse, if I shut down JAWS 8 and bring it
back up again it doesn't say anything at all as I tab around a web page. If
I resort to the JAWS Cursor I can tell that I'm positioned on links of
differing labels.

My point here is to advise those of you using Windows 2000 Professional that
once again attempting to use JAWS 8 may not be an efficient use of your time

[JAWS-Users] Latest Update

2007-03-01 Thread Kerryann Ifill
The strangest thing is happening.
I upgraded to the newest jfw update and now its behaving weird. Whenever I
try to use the jaws key and down arrow for a say all, it tells me Unknown
function, but starts reading anyway.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Regards
Kerryann

Hi All

Using jaws 8 with windows xp on a lap top and I do have my keyboard set to
lap top. In outlook I know on the desk top computer you press insert and
the letter "a" to open an attachment. When you pres this key stroke on a
lap top it starts reading the E-mail. Does any one know of a lap top
command to open attachments. I have found a work around, I just shift tab
and this puts me on the attachment. I was just wanting to know if there is
a specific command. I have also looked under lap top commands in the help
files.

Hi Jeff,

There's no trouble with what you're doing, but you coould
simply go to the first cell in the area you wish to copy
to and simply paste and it will cover a comparable region.
did it just yesterday so I know it works!

Hi donnie,

The easiest way would be to open the file and cut and
paste the information in to a blank email.
You could also attach the document to an email and send it

[JAWS-Users] Natural voices and antivirus

2007-02-18 Thread Kerryann Ifill

Hi Chris,
As David has suggested, I changed the subject line for this discussion.
As to using the voices, our need to change the synthesiser and there are
instructions up on the jaws users website that would help you.
As to antivirus, I use macafe at home and Norton at work and AVG on another
system. To tell the truth, AVG is the most accessible with jaws I find and
some of the moderators swear by the paid for professional version. Macafe
has its good and bad points it's a matter of taste.

By the way, The list is here to help people that use jaws, regardless of
their proficiency. Even those of us that have been using it for years still
have questions too

I found out about those voices viaUSA Games. Thomas the programmer uses
them and I really like their sound.
Now all I have to do is access them.
Are there people like me on the list who are yet not proficient in jjaws or
am I an anomoly? I don't mind being that, but don't want to burden you all.

One last question: do youknow what anti-virus software works well with jaws?

I was going to use avg free edition but my sister feels better if I pay for
something. Macafee? I heard of nod32 but don't knowhow well it works,
defeats worms trojans viruses...sounds like it'll kick spyware out of the
water. Does it do pop up blocking or spam killing? And is it's liscence
renewable? If it's not good what progs work well with Jaws?
Hey, have an awesome day!

[JAWS-Users] Re: How to copy files that are saved in microsoft word too the a drive.

2007-02-17 Thread Kerryann Ifill

To copy files do the following:
Go to the list file list (my documents for example) where the files are
stored. You have several choices for storage:
1. while on the file, use the applications key or shift f10 and arrow down
to "send to" press enter and then choose 3/1 floppy. I'm assuming you would
have the disk in.
2. you could simply use the copy command and then go to the 3/1 floppy list
view and paste them.
2. You could simply re-open the files in Microsoft word and choose the "save
as" command and enter the a :\ before the file name.

In future though, these kind of questions beog more on the blind computing
list than on this list as they are strictly not jaws questions. Get in
touch with ric justice our moderator to find out how to join that ist.

[JAWS-Users] Re: installing new voices for Jaws 8.0

2007-02-13 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Use the Windows key pus E to launch my computer and you should be able to
find the disk like that.
It didn't ask for a disk because it was already authorised on your system.
However, it might be a good Idea to walk with the cd to work just in case it
asks for the authorisation code.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] installing new voices for Jaws 8.0

Hi list,
I have just installed Jaws 8.0 on to my home desktop. WOW, that was the
longest Jaws install I think I have ever done "smile". A couple of questions
I have though. After the install was finished and I did the required reboot
of my computer, I put the second Jaws 8.0 disk in, so as to install the new
voices. The disk however, will not boot up. Has anyone else experienced
this? I think you can manually start the disk through My computer in windows
XP. However, I don't have classic layout selected and can't find my
computer. My second point is, I noticed with Jaws 8.0, I wasn't prompted for
an authorization disk. Is that because, I already had Jaws 7.0 installed? If
so, what will happen when I install on to the desktops at work? Will I need
to use my old authorization disk? Like I said before, the last authorization
disk issued was with Jaws 6.0. According to my distributor, we have to keep
using that one.
Thanks for your help
Jason

[JAWS-Users] Re: Customizing Jaws for more than one user on a computer, Jaws 7

2007-02-12 Thread Kerryann Ifill

Does your jaws load up automatically on start up?
If it does then this should not be a problem.
Otherwise, set jfw to load automatically on start up and that should fix the
problem.

Hi Kerry,

This did help, I was able to change the settings for his account. The only
thing that doesn't work too well is, switching users between the welcome
screen. Jaws doesn't read so I'd have to switch to his user for him, I can
see some...but he wouldn't be able to get to his user on his own as he is
total. Any ideas how to fix this?

 Details of Selected Bulletin

 Bulletin Type: FAQ

 Date Posted: 09/19/2004

 Product Name: JAWS

 Version: 5.0 plus

 Category: Tips

 Question:

Is there a way I can have JAWS automatically disabled for the other users
who don't need it?

 Answer:

I have a computer with multiple user accounts. I'm the only one who uses
JAWS. Is there a way I can have JAWS automatically disabled for the other
users who don't need it, but have it run for me?

 Other Details:

In Windows 2000 and XP, when JAWS is set to Automatically Start JAWS, the
program normally is loaded before the user accounts list is displayed. This
list allows each individual user to start the system with his or her own set
of defaults, e-mail profile, and so on. Do the following to disable JAWS
when another user who doesn't use JAWS chooses their account from this list:

Note: These steps should be followed for each individual account. It will
be necessary to log into each account and repeat this process. Do not do
this for the account(s) that will be using JAWS or JAWS will have to be
manually restarted when the system is running.
Download the following JStop.exe file and save it on your computer in any
any folder that all users will access. One good candidate is the Windows
system32 folder and that location is assumed for purposes of the rest of
this document:

 ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/Tools/JStop.exe
Press the WINDOWS KEY to open the Windows Start Menu.
Press P to open the Programs menu.
Press S until you hear "Startup submenu."
Press the APPLICATION KEY, use the arrow keys to move to Open, and press
ENTER.
When the dialog opens, press the APPLICATION KEY again and use the arrow
keys to move to New. Press the RIGHT ARROW key to open the submenu.
Use the arrow keys to move to Shortcut and press ENTER In the Create
Shortcut wizard, first type the location of the JStop.exe file. In this
example, you would type C:\windows\system32\JStop.exe (place file here for
Windows XP) C:\WINNT\system32\JStop.exe (place file here for Windows 2000)
Press the TAB key to move to the "Next" button and press the SPACEBAR.
In the following dialog, enter a convenient name for the shortcut.
Something like "Stop JAWS" is fine.
Press the TAB key to move to the "Finish" button and press the SPACEBAR.

 Notes:

 - If after you install the file and reboot you get a prompt asking if you
really want to run the file, clear the checkbox and choose YES so that the
file doesn't prompt you every time it needs to run.
 - It might not always be necessary to log into each account if you have
administrative rights and can get to c:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.
If you can do this, simply drop the file into the startup submenu for each
account. This will eliminate the need to log back in every time you need to
add the shortcut.
 - If you ever need to remove this shortcut so that JAWS will run for all
users, repeat steps 1 through 6. Select the shortcut, press the DELETE key,
and reply Yes to the prompt. The shortcut is deleted.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Customizing Jaws for more than one user on a computer, Jaws 7

2007-02-07 Thread Kerryann Ifill

Hi Carla,

If you're using a system with Windows xp, simply log on using your husband's
account, go in to the jaws window and select the "Options" menu.

You'll find all the changes you need to make are located under the voices
item of that menu.
Once you log off the system and log back on under your own or any account
not his own, the jfw settings will be as they were originally.
Hope this helps.

Hi everyone,

How can I go about customizing settings for my husband on our computer, and
be able to save those settings? He wants to customize the voice to be
slower, and more things to be read as he is just learning the computer, etc.
This way he'll be able to have access to his own email, and msn without
having to depend on me to get him started. I'm not sure where, if this is
in the help or training documentation. If anyone knows how to do this, or
where I can read about it in the help files, could someone let me know? I'd
really appreciate it.

Thanks a bunch,
Carla

Dear List,

I finally got my reach speak vsolo yesterday and I eagerly installed it.
Trouble is, when I change synthesisers under the language menu in JFW,
whenever I restart jaws it goes back to eloquence. Is this common?
What am I doing wrong?
Do I need to reinstall jaws and specify the use of a new synthesiser?
I've done some checking and I've only seen this option. All suggestions are
welcome.

anything either. Someone else told me to go into my computer, go to the c d

shooting tips or what else to try or look for would be greatly appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Converting Audio Files to Text Files

2007-01-22 Thread Kerryann Ifill

HI Ric,

I think that using the openBook programme text files can be converted to
audio. I've see a "save as mp3" under the files menu and my understanding
is that it will save a recording of a file.
However, I don't think there is a transcription software like victor's
searching for alas.

Hi Victor,
At this point in time, I don't believe it can be done.
Actually, you can't even convert text files to audio, that is simply just a
recording.

Hi All,

My apologies for the cross post, but a friend of mine needs this information
as soon as possible and I thought I'd get the most responses this way and
from people who know as much as everyone on the lists I'm on do, I should
get the information I need rather quickly.

In any case, as the subject line says, my friend essentially needs to
convert audio files to text files, with exact transcripts of what is said in
the interviews she intends on doing.

I thought about Dragon Naturally speaking, but then realized that she can
only train Dragon in her voice, and not the other 40 voices she's going to
be interviewing.

So, does anyone have any advice for me, aside from her sitting there and
typing out 80 to 100 hours worth of interviews?

Any software that anyone knows about?

Again, my apologies to the lists I'm on, but as I said, time is of the
essence.

Victor

I just wanted to say that I've often seen a few posts on this list which I

Its important that everyone can contribute equally and feel that their

This is an absolute violation of the guide lines and as such I have
reluctantly taken action in this matter. We have all been beginners at one
time or another ourselves. I sure didn't hit the ground running back in
1989 when I first touched a computer, and believe me folks I went to a
computer school that had an extremely oppressive environment where the
instructors would rather yell at a student then help them out with a
problem. I created this list on the premise that anybody could ask any
question relating to the topic of this list without having to be afraid of
what another list member would say. Yes of course the hope is that all will
gain the confidence to try things on their own and when they get stuck the
list will be here to help out. The thing is there are over 200 members on
here and everybody is at a different skill level than everybody else. My
wife was on another list and she asked a question on there only to receive
an abusive answer from another list member, well I couldn't do anything
about that list but I sure can do something here. So this group will
continue to run the way it has where everybody can feel safe to ask a
question without worrying about reprisal, because I believe it is worth
doing.

[JAWS-Users] Money Talks

2007-01-21 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi everyone,

I get so busy, that I by the time I read a post asking a question I can help
with, its usually been answered by somebody else. It means that when I do
write to this list therefore, I'm always asking and not giving. I've
decided to change that this morning.
A few weeks ago I wrote asking about financial software and a very nice
person on the list quite willing shared a spreadsheet with me which has been
very useful.
I have however bee reviewing a demo copy of Money talks by American Printing
House for the Blind and felt I should write the list and say that as
financial programmes accessible any the blind goes, it isn't half bad!
I Mean, its not going to do your taxes or even help you plan or maintain
your budget, but for keeping track of your income and expenses while being
totally accessible it can't be matches.
With a little ingenuity, it has been able to monitor to credit card expenses
as well and I'm feeling very pleased about that.
So if you're in the market for something a little less labour intensive than
quicken and you're not too in-tune with excel, give this one a try!

I wrote to the list earlier, but I don't think it went through.
I'm on the hunt for a reasonably accessible programme for financial
tracking. I've toed with Microsoft Money and though I like its many
features, there are currently no scripts for the programme and its
rather inaccessible even with using the jaws cursor. On the other
hand, money talks is designed specifically for the needs of the blind,
but its rather primitive.
I also have access to quicken and I have no idea how the 2003 scripts
will react to a more current version.

Any thoughts or comments on this software would be much appreciated.
Have a great day.

f 7 still no shortcut keys can be used! I think in windows explorer
the lists don't appear. I know all is there, but not the way I am use

Hi list members, i'd like to know how to create the message rule for this
list? What can i use instead of checking the item that says where to or cc
line contains people is there another line that i can use when specifying
conditions first? What about the subject line can that also be used because
it has the name of the list in quotes. Can this work to better identify the
list? thank you for any information that you may have.

Kerry,
If you are using Windows XP, do this.
Go to the folder that has the files you want to play.
Highlight one of the file names, but don't press enter.
Instead, do an alt enter.
This will open the properties for that file.
Now, shift tab one time and it should say, Change button.
Press your spacebar and it will give you a dialogue saying something like,
choose the program you want to use to open this type of file.
You should have a list of programs that play that type of file, so arrow
down to the one you want to use and then tab to OK and press enter.
Now tab to OK again and press enter.
If it still plays in Winamp, then you will probably have to disable the
Winamp agent in Winamp.

Hi I'm new to the list and I wanted to introduce myself and ask a question.
My name is Kerry and I'm from the sunny Caribbean island of Barbados. I've
been a jfw user since 2.0 and I'm just loving all the new things that have
come out since them.
The scenario I needed to put to the group is this.
I use audible.com for my book downloads and as you know you load the books
to audible manager. Trouble is, I installed win amp and whenever I try to
load a book it goes to win amp instead of the default player -windows media
player. The catch here is that the files won't play in win amp for some odd
reason and when I switch my default player for audible to real player it
loads some books and not others.

Any suggestions?
