Re: [JAWS-Users] Trouble With New Netbook and JAWS

2009-12-03 Thread Michael Feir
I have that happen occasionally on pretty much any computer I've used Jaws
on. I skipped over version 8 so I don't have any direct experience with it.
However, here are a couple of things I've found helpful. You can try
minimizing everything and then going back to internet explorer. That works
sometimes. What I found worked most consistantly is to use the jaws links
list to move right to the link in question. After that, you route the jaws
cursor to the pc cursor and then do a right click. I'm fairly certain that
your netbook wouldn't be the problem here.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Trouble With New Netbook and JAWS

I recently purchased a new netbook. It is an Acer Aspire One. It has JAWS 8
with Windows XP Home installed on it. I tried to download several files
this evening and neither the Applications key nor the right mouse button
would work properly. Instead of displaying the option to download a file,
it would merely allow you to save the web page and not the file being
linked to. I had my dad, who is sighted, use the touch-screen mouse pad and
download several files. He was able to do it without problems. Every time I
used the arrow keys, pressing the Applications key or the right mouse
button only resulted in pulling down a menu to change the background
display. Are there certain netbooks that JAWS does not interface well with?
Any help would be appreciated.

David,

One point of clarification I need, looking in the downloaded
zip folder you reference below, in addition to the text file
there are two others named
startupgreetting.jsb
and
startupgreetting.jss

Do we need to copy these to the JAWS settings folder as with
some other scripts or are they there for another purpose

thanks

They are only there in the case of a person who might wish to use them as a

I have an Acer Aspire with Jaws 11 but am not getting this problem.

Can I suggest that you do the following.

Go back to the web page you are having problems with.

Cursor to the link you are trying to download from but do not press on it.
Now press insert F7 to bring up the links list.
Make sure the link you want is highlighted in the list. If it is not move up
or down to that link.
Now press tab once to go to the move to link button.
Press space on the button to move to the link.
Make sure now that you do not touch the touch pad arrow keys or any other
keys.
Now press the application key and hopefully the right context menu will
come up.

In reviewing any product of this nature it is important to know exactly what
will be backed up. For example, certain of these back-up products do not
back up emails stored in outlook. Another consideration -- how easy is it to
retrieve and use the data once it has been backed up.

Is there any instruction how to place JFW 11 on a flash drive. Will be

not want me to install a screen reader, but have no problem me using
their computers, if I have it on a flash drive.

Does Gomplayer start up when you click on an audio file or do you have to start
the file from within Gomplayer? If Gomplayer starts when you click the file,
how did you set Gomplayer to do this.

I have run the set up wizard and, I think, set it play all files types, but I

2009-12-03 Thread Sherrie Gosling
A few days ago someone mentioned that he had gotten a laptop with the number
pad on it and I was bummed out because I had just gotten this Acer and did not
think to check for a number pad when buying it.
With all the problems I have had getting it set up and working properly I was
not really happy with it. But now since my sister pointed out that it does
indeed, have the number pad I am now thrilled with it.
I have always carried a separate full size keyboard with me to use with my old
laptop. This keyboard on my new Acer is really full sized. By marking several
vital keys with raised bumps and stick on Velcro for ease of use I am now able
to use the keyboard easily.
The laptop was very reasonable, too. Wal-Mart had them on sale for $349 at the
beginning of November So if anyone is looking for the laptop with the number
pad built in check out Acer. This unit has 4 gb ram and 250 HD with Windows 7

No the Jaws 10 FS Reader is a demo and restricted to reading FS material.
However the good news is that the full version is available with the Jaws
11

afford

to upgrade to Jaws 11 right now.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using FS Reader to read mp3 Audio Books

Dear list

I offer this tip.
Experimenting with the full version of FSReader that comes with Jaws 11
I
have found that it is very good at reading mp3 audio books. In
particular
the capacity to increase reading rate with control page up is better
than
any other software that I have come across for this feature. Unlike
other
solutions for accelerating playback the distortion level is low. It
seems

a
bit like having the Victor Reader Stream reading capacity on your PC.

As I understand it, even if you download and install only the demo
version
of Jaws 11 you will get the full version of FSReader.

Of course FSReader will not normally read mp3 audio books as it looks
only
for daisy content.
However I have found an easy way to convert a folder of mp3 files into
a

Daisy book that FSReader will open and read.

The first step is to copy the folder of mp3 files you want to convert
into
an easy place to find on your PC. I copied a book onto my C drive and
renamed the folder daisy.

Now download the free Daisy book Generator from

http://jaapvanlelieveld.xs4all.nl/daisy.htm

Install the Daisy Book Generator and run the program from your programs
menu.

The program is a very simple command line program. There are no menus or
buttons.
Simply type in the path of the folder you want to become a Daisy Book
and
then press enter.
In my case this is C:\daisy
It seems impossible to copy and paste a long path into the program which
is
why I suggest you copy the folder you want to convert into an easy to
type
location.
Press enter if you get any warning messages from the program about the
filenames you have in your folder.

The program will then start converting your folder of mp3 files into a
daisy
book.
The program will prompt you when this is completed and then pressing
enter
again will close the program.

Now you will find that FS Reader will recognise this folder as a daisy
book
and play the contents.

Regards

David Griffith

You cannot back up anything on any external or network drive. It is
accessible but restoring was a pain.

Hello everyone,
I am interested in purchasing carbonite.com to back up all of my files. I
went online and read about it, and one thing I wasn't sure of was this, I
have all of my music and videos on an external drive, will I be able to back
that up with carbonite? Also, does it work well with jaws?
Will I need to
purchase an account for each of my computers? Thanks for any help.

In a way it only is a simple copy and paste if you look at it objectively.
Try it out and if it doesn't work just delete the outlook express script

I understand, but I don't think it's strictly an xp issue. I thought it was
more or less what anti virus program you were running.
I know it just stays there very briefly and then it's gone, so wondering why

I guess you could look at it this way, if you didn't have the alert sound on

you had new mail.

Thanks David. I do not experience this problem on any particular web site.
Since it is only equipped for high-speed Internet access, I will have to

I have an Acer Aspire with Jaws 11 but am not getting this problem.

Can I suggest that you do the following.

Go back to the web page you are having problems with.

Cursor to the link you are trying to download from but do not press on it.
Now press insert F7 to bring up the links list.
Make sure the link you want is highlighted in the list. If it is not move
up

or down to that link.
Now press tab once to go to the move to link button.
Press space on the button to move to the link.
Make sure now that you do not touch the touch pad arrow keys or any other
keys.
Now press the application key and hopefully the right context menu will
come up.

I recently purchased a new netbook. It is an Acer Aspire One. It has JAWS
8
with Windows XP Home installed on it. I tried to download several files
this

evening and neither the Applications key nor the right mouse button would
work properly. Instead of displaying the option to download a file, it
would

merely allow you to save the web page and not the file being linked to. I
had my dad, who is sighted, use the touch-screen mouse pad and download
several files. He was able to do it without problems. Every time I used
the

arrow keys, pressing the Applications key or the right mouse button only
resulted in pulling down a menu to change the background display. Are
there

certain netbooks that JAWS does not interface well with? Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi everyone,

Just last night I heard a computer tech on a radio show talk about
