Re: [JAWS-Users] QUICK KEYS
Hello Josh, If the link to the latest build of JAWS version 10 in my previous message didn't work then you should be able to download the file from the link below. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3951772/J10.0.1178-32bit.exe Take care. Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: Saturday, May 01, 2010 10:31 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] QUICK KEYS Hello Josh, You might consider doing some maintenance such as turning your computer off and using canned air to blow out dust or dirt between the keys are that might have worked down under the caps of the modifier keys as well as the other keys on the keyboard. If you are quite sure the problem is JAWS related then here are some steps for doing a JAWS repair: 1. You can download the 32-bit version of JAWS 10 if that is still what you are using at the following link: JAWS ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J10.0.1178-3 2bit.exe 10.0.1178 32-bit - October 2009 English (76.9 MB) 2. Tab to the save button instead of using the run button and press spacebar. 3. Make note of the file name and where the file is being saved. To find out where the file is being saved you can try to use shift with tab key once or twice to see if the file list in the save dialog box is showing. If not you should be able to tab to a browse button and use it and then find out where your downloads will be saved. If you are using Vista or Windows 7 you can also route JAWS to PC cursor, use a page up and arrow down once or twice to listen to the line that should tell you where the file is being saved. Use caps lock with right bracket to route JAWS to PC. Use caps lock with semicolon to turn PC cursor back on. In some save dialog box configurations you can use Alt with I to move to the save in tree view structure and find out where the file will be saved. 4. Use tab key to the save button and depress it by using the spacebar. 5. When download is complete bring up the run dialog box by using Windows key with R. 6. Use tab key to move to the browse button and press spacebar. 7. Use tab key or shift with tab until you are at the list of files in the current folder. You can use this browse dialog box to find your downloaded file. If focus is not in the right folder you can use backspace when in the list to move back one level in the folder structure. For example, if the file is in the downloads folder under your user folder then use backspace until you find the list with your user folder and open it by pressing enter key. In the resulting list move to downloads and press enter key and then find your file. Hopefully you understand how to browse to the downloaded file. If not feel free to let me know and I can send you more info on working in the folder hierarchy of Windows. 8. When you find the downloaded file in the browse dialog press enter key on it. 9. Focus should be back in the run dialog box. Use tab key until you are in the edit combo box that has the path of the file. 10.Press end key to move to the end of the path. The last part of the file name ends with exe (e x e). Make sure to add a space after the last E. 11.Type in /type repair (that is a forward slash followed by the word type then a space then the word repair). 12.Press enter and follow prompts. Take care. [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDF to OCR file
Some of my very important documents have been sent to me from places like banks and legal places, but they are in picture PDF form. I did look on the programs page and thought the PDF to OCR would be perfect, but when extracted it shows a list of 8 things and I have no idea what any of these items does. There isn't a help file, and there doesn't seem to be menus for conversion or places where you can select a PDF file and folder to browse, etc. I don't even see it in programs in start menu or on desktop. It simply unzips unrecognizable folders but I don't feel it's completely installed. If someone has a solution for this or even another easier program so Jaws can read these image files, please let me know. Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDF toOCR file
JoAnne, I'm not entirely clear on your issue but think it is similar to the issue I face when I get my gas electric bill via PDF attachment. The only way I know to convert a PDF image or picture that actually contains text is to print it out on your printer and then scan the printed version back into your computer which will use your OCR program. In my case it is OmniPage version 15. I know this is a pain but that is the way I have found to get around it when needed. Maybe others have something more creative? Re: [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDF to OCR file
Hi. Just a couple of questions before i give my opinion, I'm assuming that at this stage, adobe reader doesn't give any output at all, even when accessibility options are set? if it did, then you could just export them as text files. Secondly, are you using GMail? if you were, they offer an option to view PDF atachments as HTML files. Thirdly, couldn't omnipage just import the PDF files? i know that option's available in version 17? and finally, if the omnipage isn't an option for you, you could perhaps try PDF to word converter. Re: [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDF to OCR file
Joanne, There are at least two kinds of PDF formats. If the file is actually a picture of something like a bank statement, what is on the paper is actually a graphic, and it sounds like that's what you have. Some people have had some success with scanning software but generally those programs require a lot of cleanup to the scanned file. I run a transcription business and have had 14 years of experience with such files. We generally ask the sender to provide us a different format of the file such as .doc, .rtf, or even .txt. Some of the software out there now is fairly good, but we have not found it to be reliable enough for many things because of the varied use of fonts and strange symbols. The other kind of pdf is one that was created in some sort of wordprocessor and then made into a pdf. You can tell if the file you have is one of those by going to your File Menu in Acrobat Reader and check to see if there is a Save as Text option. You can then save it as a text file and open it in your preferred wordprocessor. I have had varying degrees of success with copying a pdf to my clipboard and pasting it into Word, but if you have a graphic to start with, that will not help. There are probably others on this list who are much more versed in the technical workings of all of this, and I sure hope they have some suggestions for you that I can use. Re: [JAWS-Users] QUICK KEYS
Sorry, I asked as part of a troubleshooting process of the problem, not as a solution. You need to find the root of the issue, such as the JAWS Navigation keys not working or a hardware or software problem with your keyboard. Trying a USB keyboard if available, might help isolate the problem. Again, this is a troubleshooting step, not a solution. By the way, in Word, the D and N keys should move you through footnotes and comments in your document. Re: [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDF to OCR file
Hi, I found that if you have an image PDF document, you can use OmniPage (I have version 15) to scan the file, (not a print of the image PDF) and it will convert it to a readable document. At the moment, I don't remember the steps to go through this process, but it has worked for me before. Of course, this is assuming that you have OmniPage. I do have an image PDF and I will try to reproduce the process and let the list know how to do it. I should have something in a few days? Re: [JAWS-Users] Updating without losing previous version JAWS
Vicky, I'm not sure if you got this or not. But just in case, when you locate the Jaws 11 download link on the Freedom web site, yu are given the option to Run or Save. If you choose Save, you can download a file to a pre-determined folder. Then, yu can install the file separately. However, Jaws does give you the option of removing those files which are used by other programsand in that case, you would choose not to uninstall the files. I don't think that Jaws over-writes previous versions when it's installed but what it does do is to turn that earlier version off. It's still there and if you can find the .exe file you can create a shortcut right on your desktop to load either Jaws 10 or Jaws 11. I did that with previous versions anyway because I wasn't sure about the newer version. But I think you have to actively choose to uninstall earlier Jaws versions. Otherwise, they stay in your computer. Re: [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDF to OCR file
Hello Joanne, If when you open the PDF in the Adobe Reader you hear alert: empty document announced then the file is likely an image of a printed page that has been scanned. I found that a small freeware program called FreeOCR can usually do quite a good job on this kind of file. If you have Kurzweil, OpenBook, OmniPage or another commercial OCR program then you should be able to run OCR on the file and get the desired results. Here is a link to FreeOCR if you want to download it. After the link are some steps to follow when using the program for a scanned image file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3951772/freeocr.exe 1.Install FreeOCR by pressing enter key or double-clicking on the downloaded file. 2.Follow prompts to install the software. An icon will be created on the desktop. 3.You might want to restart your system when installation is complete, although the program doesn't tell you that a restart is required. 4.Press enter key or double-click the FreeOCR icon on the desktop to start the program. 5.Use Alt+F to bring up the file menu, use down arrow to the load PDF choice and press enter key. 6.Browse to the PDF file to be used and open it. 7.Press alt+O to go into the OCR menu and press enter key on the start OCR process choice. 8.Use tab key to move into the edit area that tells you that focus is in page 1. 9.After waiting some time for processing to finish use Alt+T to go into the text menu, use down arrow to the copy text to clipboard choice and press enter key. 10. Open up your word processing program and paste the text. 11. The top few lines will be text from the FreeOCR program so you can select it and delete it. The main text of the document should start right after the text you are going to delete. 12. An alternative to copying the text to the clipboard is to use the save text choice in the text menu of FreeOCR after processing the image file. A dialog box will appear for you to name the file and save it where you want it. You can then open the file in Notepad from where it is stored. I have had success using programs to change the PDF to TIF files and then using the Microsoft Document Writer to extract the text into a document, but this program actually gave me better results and worked faster. If you have the Microsoft Document Image Writer installed you can do the following: 1. Open the PDF file in the Adobe Reader and you will hear alert: empty document. 2. Press CTRL+P to go into the print dialog box. 3. Use tab key to the list of printers and then use up or down arrow keys to find the Microsoft Document Image Writer choice and press enter key. 4. A SaveAs box will appear with .TIF shown in the file types list. Name the file and save it as a TIF file. 5. Open all programs from the start menu, open the Microsoft office group, open the Office tools, and use down arrow to the choice for Microsoft office Document Imaging. Press enter on that choice. 6. Press alt+T to go into the tools menu and press enter key on the recognize text using OCR choice. 7. A dialog box will appear where you can tell the program to recognize all pages. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key. 8. Wait for processing to finish. 9. Press Alt+T again and use down arrow to the send text to Word choice and press enter key. 10.Use tab a couple of times and find out what the default location for the document will be and then tab to OK and press enter key. 11.Wait for the file to open in Microsoft Word. Although using the Microsoft Document Image Writer has worked for me, I have had better output using the FreeOCR program. It is also easier to use and you only need to use the one program. Take care. You can tell if the file you have is

Everyone, be sure to report all your problems to FS. If they don't know, they can't fix. However, my problem is that all the information is spoken twice before speaking the first few lines of text of the e-mail. After speaking to fs's escalation department and playing around with various settings and doing an uninstall/install, we didn't' resolve my issue, but I was told that my particular problem came up in the beta testing of the build, but that I was the first so far to report it with the final release. Maybe you can play with the customize outlook message settings or perhaps disable add ons (this is what fs had me do for example) and see if that helps... other then that, contacting fs would seem like a good option too. Who knows, maybe it's just another bug that got through the testing part.
