I have accidentally muted sounds twice recently. Can anyone tell me the
steps to follow to unmute the computer? I want to write them down so I can
do them in case no eyes are available. I don't know what I am hitting that
mutes, but last time I was using the find command and must have hit a bad
key combo. I am using JAWS 14 on Windows 7. Thanks.

But, which sounds was muted in the first place? Again. Anbd to clarify.
When I tab once into the volume dialogue after typing sndvol , on my
Toshiba laptop using Windows7 there is the Mute Speakers Button. The
Mute System Sounds button is four tab key presses further on than that.

An easier command to type, is: from the Start (search box edit); sndvol .

Hi all.
I just purchased a Seagate external drive on which to back up files
currently on my computer.
If it helps, I am currently using Jaws 11, and Windows XP.
Do I have to install the Seagate Dash-board file in order to use my drive?
If so, is this software accessible.
If I don't have to install the software that came with this drive, can I
just start copying files to the drive?
Thanks in advance.

For many years I have been using eset nod 32. My license will expire in less

there an advantage with the microsoft products for a win 32 bit machine. A few
years ago I had a problem and a support person from eset was on the phone with
me for a few hours cleaning the machine. Something got into my machine and
corrupted the registry. It did not show up as a virus with any scan. My local
weather page was being directed to a porn site.
Does microsoft have similar support?

I just purchased a Seagate external drive on which to back up files

If it helps, I am currently using Jaws 11, and Windows XP.
Do I have to install the Seagate Dash-board file in order to use my drive?
If so, is this software accessible.
If I don't have to install the software that came with this drive, can I

Thanks in advance.

I have a 1.5 tarabit Seagate, which will last a life time and still be

Are you having a hard time trying to get to open it or operate it?
Just plug in the USB, turn on the external.
Go to my computer and arrow down and see, if the external HD is highlighted
.
Press enter to open it.
Wait, and see, if it's trying to download files to your PC, if not move on.
Now Copy paste a useless file and see, if it pasted.
If, you were able to paste and copy files in and out, it's working fine.

My next thought was to scan the thin manual and save it as a word doc and

On one theory, you would still had headphone sounds, if the speakers
referred to external speakers. Some systems do operaqe like that.

hello there;

the real give away in that dialog box is;
mute speakers button,
obviously, doing this, you will definitely have no sounds at all.
I have never try the mute system sounds, so I don't know.

I have now answered my question, and David got it right. I'm not sure
what the system sounds Mute really refers to, but it isn't the overall
thing I had envisaged. (There are, of course, different tab controls
in

that dialogue.)

Re: [JAWS-Users] Ribbons Navigation

2014-03-15 Thread Flor Lynch

Mike,

I'll try this in general brief but rough summary, dealing with the idea
of it. You're familiar with tab controls? The different pages (ctrl+tab)
you get in multi-page dialog boxes? Well, ribbons are much the same as
them. You can also right- or left-arrow between each of them. Now you
have lower ribbons, or sub-ribbons, which will be accessed through their
parent ribbons - often down-arrow from such if there's a sub-or
lower-ribbon present on an option. The JAWS Virtual Ribbons are not the
real Ribbons, and indeed, in some cases they rearrange many things in
the structure and leave other things out. Another way to regard them is
as if they were toobars activated with buttons. (You may recall Excel
had plenty of those.)

Now the good news is that there are many, many hot keys associated with
the items in the Ribbons, that can be activated. However, it does take
longer to accomplish a task i.e., more keystrokes, that formerly used to
be a quite simple structural through the menu approach. Things are now
more layered than they were, i.e. more vertical rather than linear.

2014-03-15 Thread Charles Rivard
The problem is that you can tab or arrow into a subRibbon, if you could call
it that, and the opposite keystroke such as a shift leftarrow or shift tab
does not bring you back to where you were when you used the keystroke that
got you into that subRibbon. If I go too far north along a sidewalk, I
expect to be able to accurately retrace my steps to get back to where I made
the error in judgment.

Mike,

I'll try this in general brief but rough summary, dealing with the idea of
it. You're familiar with tab controls? The different pages (ctrl+tab) you
get in multi-page dialog boxes? Well, ribbons are much the same as them.
You can also right- or left-arrow between each of them. Now you have lower
ribbons, or sub-ribbons, which will be accessed through their parent
ribbons - often down-arrow from such if there's a sub-or lower-ribbon
present on an option. The JAWS Virtual Ribbons are not the real Ribbons,
and indeed, in some cases they rearrange many things in the structure and
leave other things out. Another way to regard them is as if they were
toobars activated with buttons. (You may recall Excel had plenty of
those.)

 Hello there;

 If your using windows 7,

1, after you've booted the computer,
Wait a little bit for desktop to load.

 2, now press,
 Windows+r=run,
 Type in:
 sndvol
 Press enter,
 Tab once, press the spacebar,
 This should unmute the sound.

If you wish to put a shortcut to:
 Sndvol.exe, on your desktop try the following;

 1, go to desktop,
 Windows key+m,

 2, press the keystroke,
 Ctrl+spacebar,
 To unselect all icons.

3, press the applications key, and down arrow and enter on, New sub
 menu.

4, now arrow and enter on,
 New shortcut.

 5,
Now type the following in the edit box,
 sndvol.exe
 6, tab next, press enter.
 You will see/hear;
 sndvol.exe
your asked to give the shortcut a name, you can leave the
 sndvol.exe,
 or you
could name it for example; volume.
 Tab finish press enter.

Now, if you would like a hot-key,

 1, desktop,
Press the letter s until you hear,
 Sndvol.exe
Or the letter v if you've named the shortcut volume,

2, now press alt+enter to bring up the properties,

 3, tab until you hear;
 Shortcut key none,
Here you could type s, or what ever letter you wish, Now press
 enter.
Now you have a shortcut with a hot-key.

That's the mute speakers button, by pressing the tab key once. The
 Mute
System Sounds button is four tab further on than that, so you'd
 press
the tab key five times to get to it.

 An easier command to type, is: from the Start (search box edit);
 sndvol
 .
(You may remember sndvol32.exe on older Windows 32-bit systems.) You
 get
straight to the dialogue box, typing less, that way.

No. I didn't say that really. Just that some systems have more than two

Wait a little bit for desktop to load.

2, now press,
Windows+r=run,

sndvol

This should unmute the sound.

If you wish to put a shortcut to:
Sndvol.exe, on your desktop try the following;

That's the mute speakers button, by pressing the tab key once. The
Mute
System Sounds button is four tab further on than that, so you'd
press
the tab key five times to get to it.

An easier command to type, is: from the Start (search box edit);
sndvol
.
(You may remember sndvol32.exe on older Windows 32-bit systems.)
You

get
straight to the dialogue box, typing less, that way.

Re: [JAWS-Users] start screen

2014-03-15 Thread Paula Waby
Hi all
I hope it is OK to ask this here. I am using Jaws and recently bought my
Windows 8.1 machine. I had my local tech guy help set things up. He put all
the things I normally use like Word, Outlook, Internet etc. on the desktop
and told me not to go near the start screen as it is not accessible. He
knows a little about Jaws but not a lot. Seeing mention of the weather app
caused me to have a bit of a look around on the start screen and I wonder
how accessible it is with Jaws as I'd like to be making use of it if some
things are accessible. I'm not sure where to start though. I found weather
bug as the weather had been mentioned here and got through an agreement for
its use but it lands on Auckland our main city and I can't tell if you can
change where it looks. I'm sure you can so wondered if anyone has any tips
about using things on the start screen if it is in fact usable. Can we also
use the touch feature on the screen itself? If this is too broad to be
asking on this list just tell me and I'll ask elsewhere. As I am using Jaws
15 though I thought it should be OK to ask at least whether the start screen
is accessible even if that's all I can find out. I shall continue to play
with tabbing and arrowing around but am wondering if there are shortcuts.
Cheers
Paula.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Ribbons Navigation

Hi All,

I'll get right to the point. The ribbons in Office 07 up frustrate the
hell out of me! I've been searching for a good tutorial that explains the
ribbons, i.e, both upper lower, navigating the with without using the
Jaws Virtual Ribbons option I'm not having any luck. I just can't get the
hang or get my head wrapped around on how to navigate ribbons I guess
it's high time I start living in the new world of Office! I would really
like a tutorial that really breaks the ribbons navigating them down in
simple, easy to understand steps. I need something really simple because
I'm certainly a knucklehead when it comes to this ribbons crap! LOL,
hahaha hahaha hahaha, LOL

So folks, any help will be graciously accepted greatly appreciated.
Thanks much.
Take care.
Mike
