[JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 frequently goes silent

2015-05-05 Thread Kimber Gardner
Recently I began consistently using jaws 16 and I'm seeing some odd
behavior which I wonder if anyone can confirm.

During remote sessions using VPN, jaws 16 frequently goes absolutely
silent for minutes at a time. Occasionally speech will return if I
wait long enough, but often I have to reboot the computer before I am
able to regain speech.

This same behavior would sometimes occur with older versions of jaws
(prior to jaws 15), but then it seemed to be fixed.

I work from home several days a week, signed on to my desktop at work
and these frequent silences are very disruptive, not to mention the
reboots. Has anyone else seen this behavior with jaws 16? I intended
to report it to FS, but I'm not sure even how to explain it since it
seems to happen randomly without regard to what application I may be
using at the time.

Thanks,
Kim

In XP when I was in spell check and wanted to read the
sentence the spell check was suggesting I correct I pressed
the number eight on the key pad. I just tried doing that

you read the sentence the spell check is suggesting you

Kim, when Jaws goes silent, try one of two things:

1. Restart Jaws with Insert-WindowsKey+F4 (takes a little time)
2. Press WindowsKey+U; close the window that had opened, after Jaws begins
talking.

sure if it can be done only for a particular workbook. That sounds like a

Yea that happened to me also after hitting f7 in ms word 2013 with

2015-05-05 Thread Annette Carr
Yes, I am seeing similar issues. It seems like the computer is hanging up,
so JAWS does not speak, and I can't switch to another open application. The
silences range from 3 seconds to 34 seconds today.

I am continuing to have random occurrences of spaces missing from e-mail
replies that I create, and random 1-3 letters will be missing from what I am
typing in the body of Outlook messages and in Word Documents.

I've got an open ticket with FS regarding all of this. The problems were
happening with JAWS14 and FS said that I had to update to JAWS 16. After
battling my employer over this, JAWS16 was installed and the problems still
existed. Went back to FS and was told that I had to install the next update
and the problem would go away. I have since installed the last 2 updates,
with absolute no improvement. I am trying to schedule a phone conference
between FS and my IT department, but it is like herding cats.

When giving instructions that include specific keystrokes, it would be quite
helpful to everyone,
if you first verify that the keystroke is correct, and then tell what the
keystroke does.
Key strokes in both Jaws and Windows change from time to time, so we can't
assume that the same one will
work from earlier versions with newer versions.
For instance, Windows key + U, opens the Utility Manager in Windows XP,
and the Ease of Access Center in Windows 7.
After pressing that key combination, if you press Alt + N, Narrator will
start.
The keystroke for starting Narrator in Windows 8 is, Windows key + Enter.
Insert, or Jaws Key, + H, places Jaws hot keys in the virtual viewer, and is
used in Jaws 6 thru 16.
You can always use keyboard help, Insert + the number 1 on the number row,
to identify the location of keys and
the function of certain key combinations.
Also, you can look in the Jaws help topics, and the Jaws-users website.

I intended
to report it to FS, but I'm not sure even how to explain it since it
seems to happen randomly without regard to what application I may be
 using at the time.

 Thanks,
 Kim

Two tricks I have mentioned before are:
Press the insert f10 for list of active programs, find the one you want
and enter on it. JAWS often start talking again.

Another is to refresh with insert plus escape.

You know, I get the silent treatment sometimes with 13, more often than I'd
like. I don't remember getting that for years until a couple of years ago.
It makes me wonder if the net is so complex that JAWS just stumbles. It's
frustrating to me, because without JAWS, nothing means anything to me, and I
just guess at turning the thing off, keep hitting F4, Right Arrow and Enter.

No, it doesn't work all the time but often, it does. Easier to restart Jaws
with Insert-WindowsKey+F4 ratehr than turning it off and then on.

As far as the skipping of characters while typing, it happens to me also; it
seems to have improved somewhat with the latest Jaws16 update, but it still
happens.

Yes, I am seeing similar issues. It seems like the computer is hanging
up,
so JAWS does not speak, and I can't switch to another open application.
The

silences range from 3 seconds to 34 seconds today.

I am continuing to have random occurrences of spaces missing from e-mail
replies that I create, and random 1-3 letters will be missing from what I
am

typing in the body of Outlook messages and in Word Documents.

I've got an open ticket with FS regarding all of this. The problems were
happening with JAWS14 and FS said that I had to update to JAWS 16. After
battling my employer over this, JAWS16 was installed and the problems
still
existed. Went back to FS and was told that I had to install the next
update

and the problem would go away. I have since installed the last 2 updates,
with absolute no improvement. I am trying to schedule a phone conference
between FS and my IT department, but it is like herding cats.

There is a free utility called Produkey, that will retrieve all of your
Microsoft software product keys for you. It also includes some other
information about each product that may or may not be helpful. Search the
web for it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 frequently goes silent

2015-05-05 Thread Kimber Gardner
How do you find the program in the list when there is no speech?

Sometimes when this happens at home I can turn on NVDA and it gets
things untangled. But I am not allowed to have NVDA on my work
computers, so there goes that workaround.

I too have seen the skipped characters (most often in Outlook), as
well as my cursor moving eradically around the document so characters
I have typed come out all jumbled up. This happens only with jaws
version 16.

On 5/5/15, Annette Carr amca...@verizon.net wrote:

I am continuing to have random occurrences of spaces missing from e-mail
replies that I create, and random 1-3 letters will be missing from what I
 am
typing in the body of Outlook messages and in Word Documents.

I've got an open ticket with FS regarding all of this. The problems were
happening with JAWS14 and FS said that I had to update to JAWS 16. After
battling my employer over this, JAWS16 was installed and the problems still
existed. Went back to FS and was told that I had to install the next

with absolute no improvement. I am trying to schedule a phone conference

Recently I began consistently using jaws 16 and I'm seeing some odd
 behavior
which I wonder if anyone can confirm.

During remote sessions using VPN, jaws 16 frequently goes absolutely silent
for minutes at a time. Occasionally speech will return if I wait long
enough, but often I have to reboot the computer before I am able to regain
 speech.

This same behavior would sometimes occur with older versions of jaws (prior
to jaws 15), but then it seemed to be fixed.

I work from home several days a week, signed on to my desktop at work and
these frequent silences are very disruptive, not to mention the reboots.
 Has
anyone else seen this behavior with jaws 16? I intended to report it to FS,
but I'm not sure even how to explain it since it seems to happen randomly
without regard to what application I may be using at the time.

 Thanks,
 Kim

[JAWS-Users] Question on JAWS update

2015-05-05 Thread Pinky
Hi Group,

I updated my JAWS 16 to 16.0.2339 version. Is this the latest JAWS 16
version. Also when I updated I had to reenter my JAWS hot key to get JAWS
to start up with the hot key. I guess I was wondering why by just updated
JAWS why would I have to setup my JAWS hot key again when I already had it
setup?

I am also wondering what other settings JAWS changed after updating. Has
anyone else experience any of these changes when just doing the JAWS 16
update from the website?

Thanks for any info on this subject.

Since you will be reading this phone number with Jaws, I hope I don't get

This phone number replace the 800 number for Tell Me. When your call is
answered say, Sports, then say, Baseball, then the name of the team you want
if you're looking for a particular teams score. This message was sent using
Windows7 J16. I figured I better throw that in since I'm walking that

Try this, press the jaws key and the letter H key at the same time. That
will open up with the line that you are working on. Make your changes and
press the tab key. it will ask you if you want to make the changes. Accept
that and you are done. That works, I just tried it. What I did. I opened MS

I pressed F7 and started spell check. It stopped on zo and said that it was
not in the dictionary. I pressed cap lock and H. It opened the line that I
was working on. then I changed the Z O to the word zoo. I pressed the tab
key, It asked me if I wanted to make the change. It is that simple. LeDon. O

Subject: [Bulk] [JAWS-Users] JAWS script to disable Ctrl + Shift + D
keystroke inspecific Excel workbook

Hi,

How would I go about writing a JAWS script to disable the JAWS keystroke
'Ctrl + Shift + D' whenever the workbook 'Test.xls' is open for example.

I would like to use that keystroke with an Excel macro.

Kind regards,
dave

Hi Martin,

When I ran it, neither MWB or Vipre flagged it.
Take care.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Key Finder program also installs a
program called Open Candy. It's mentioned in the fine print during install.
At minimum Malware Bytes and AVG consider that malware. Here is a link from
AVG:

Hi Lenny,

A program called Magical Jellybean Key Finder will do just what you want.
The direct download link is below.

Is there a way to retrieve the windows product key? I am running win 7 in 32
bit mode. I am considering replacing the mb and processor and reinstalling
in 64 bit. This machine could have run the 64but I elected for the 32 bit
because of a special dye-sublimation printer. At the time there were no
drivers for it.

The title of your message says that Outlook has stopped working, but it
seems that in yor message you say that JAWS has stopped working. Which
is it?

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [JAWS-Users] Outlook 2010 has completely stopped
working

I am using W7, Outlook 2010 and latest jaws and jaws has completely
stopped working in anyway. My wife has vision and she looked at it but
she can't get it to work but she is in no way a very computer savvy
person. I did a system restore a couple of times but it did nothing.
Is there anyway to repair outlook 2010 or does anyone have any
suggestions as to what I might try? This is another computer and not
the one I am on at present. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks much,
