Regarding the Windows 10 Notification Balloon alerts from the System Tray, I
checked on it again today and am fairly certain that this one will be included
in the next update posting. It did not make in time for the release this week.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS Reading Messages in Outlook 2013

2015-11-19 Thread Dan Kerstetter
Hello all.

I've had this problem since JAWS 17 came out in beta and even reported it as
a bug.

When I open a message in outlook 2013, the top two lines or so are read
twice. This happens more often than not.

I have JAWS set to automatically read messages. I have link count and all
the other options turned off.

Before I bother tech support, I'm curious as to whether anyone might have a
suggestion on how to remedy this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

[JAWS-Users] Jaws Update

2015-11-19 Thread T. Civitello
Strange thing happening here. Using Jaws version 17.0.1010 and Windows 10 Every
time Jaws starts I get the message that Jaws updates are available and do I
want to install them. If I reply yes I get some chimes and Jaws goes silent. If
I activate the check for updates in the Jaws help menu the same thing happens,
Jaws goes silent. Tom

Yes, we are getting a little old, I watched the show also, along with a lot
of other 1960's westerns or reruns.
Now, JAWS was not even an embryo than, could you imagine for those totals
out there having description for those shows when we were actually kids,
whether it be some mechanism in JAWS that could describe them or the typical
DVS tracts one can get today. I drove my family crazy during silences, or
music asking what happened, did he shoot him, did he get shot.
Sometimes I got an answer but many times I was left to figure it out or
imagine it the way I wanted it to be.
You can't watch a DVS on an old 1950s black a white TV, you can't stay stuck
in the 20th century for software upgrades either.
OK, tried to keep it somewhat JAWS related but, not successful.
Sure Happy It Is Thursday!

I had to smile when I read your statement, Have dongle, will travel. I think
that you are giving away your age here. I too remember the TV show, Have
gun, will travel. I use to watch it faithfully. Do you think that we may be
getting a little old? Beats the alternative, doesn't it? I have heard that
the only thing that was good about getting old is, You know that you are not
going to die young. Enjoy the day, each one is precious.

The best method IMO would be if you had a dongle, or simply did your work in
demo mode. Which sounds to me that might be your best way to go.

I have done a lot of work on family members systems ETC, so lot of demo
versions of JAWS around. Have dongle, will travel.

Hi,
I can confirm this behavior. It's happened a few times to me recently on
Amazon.com. I was on the your orders link. It verbalized your orders but
somehow after entering on what verbalized as your orders I ended up on a
page for sellers on amazon. thank goodness for alt left arrow. I could
reproduce this at will so I think I can safely say it wasn't user error in
this case.
As for its cause or solution such still escapes me but I can indeed confirm
the behavior you report.
I know it isn't a solution but sometimes knowing that an anomaly isn't
unique to you and your set up can bring a bit of solace.

I'm not sure if it's after the windows 10 update, or after I made changes in
the quick setting which I don't remember what the changes were; however,
here is the skinny.

Let's say there are two links I am passing by, about and contact us. I
click contact us and the about page opens.

The only way I can get the right link to launch is listing the links, tab to
move to link, then activate link. That is to much just to read a page lol,
thoughts?

Windows 10, jaws 16 and IE 11.

What's New:

Enhancements in JAWS 17.0.1214 (November 2015)

The following is a list of improvements made between the initial JAWS 17
release and the November 2015 update.

Smart Navigation
list of 6 items
• When INSERT+X is used to toggle Smart Navigation, the JAWS focus now
remains at the location on the web page where you performed the toggle.
• The command to temporarily toggle Smart Navigation (INSERT+X) can now be
found using the JAWS Command Search feature (INSERT+SPACEBAR, J).
• Resolved an issue where JAWS was not reading list items on certain web
pages when using Smart Navigation.
• Addressed a reported issue with the commands to read from the beginning
of

the line to the cursor (INSERT+HOME) and from the cursor to the end of the
line (INSERT+PAGE UP) not working in a table cell when using Smart
Navigation.
• When using the V and SHIFT+V Navigation Quick Keys to move to the next
or
previous visited link, resolved an issue where all links on the current
line
were being read instead of the specific visited link if Smart Navigation
was

active.
• Addressed an issue where many blank lines were appearing on some web
pages

with Smart Navigation active.
list end

JAWS
list of 12 items
• Addressed an issue with the Amazon Product Search Research It lookup
source not returning results as expected.
• Addressed an issue with symbols not being read as expected when inserted
into a document using the Select a Symbol to Print dialog box (INSERT+4).
• In response to customer feedback, the folder path for the Explore
Scripts

shortcut has been changed from C:\ProgramData\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\17.0\Scripts\enu
to point to C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\17.0\Scripts.
• This update contains new drivers from HumanWare for the Brailiant BI
braille display in order to support Windows 10.
• If Active Follows Braille is not enabled, addressed issues where the
braille display would not move away from the structured line when panning,
or using
the commands to move the braille cursor to the next or prior line (RIGHT
ROCKER BAR on Focus Blue braille displays).
• When entering text from the Perkins-style keyboard on a braille display
using Unified English Braille (UEB) or another form of Contracted English
Braille,
resolved an issue where contracted words beginning with dots 4-5-6, such
as

spirit, many, world, etc., were not appearing correctly in documents. The
dots
4-5-6 portion of the word was being dropped when the word was
back-translated.
• When verbosity for Braille Flash messages is set to Advanced, resolved
customer reported issues where "sts" messages were being shown on the
braille
display even when the option to display status information was turned off.
In addition, the flash messages for the INSERT+T and INSERT+Q commands now
display
the short message as expected instead of the long message.
• If the JAWS cursor is configured to follow the PC Cursor using the
CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD Minus command, an issue was resolved where JAWS was
not

reading
as expected when moving between applications with ALT+TAB.
• Addressed an issue with JAWS not correctly identifying the factorial
symbol in MathML content.
• If you perform a two-finger double tap to open a context menu while text
selection is active, the flick gestures will now work as expected to
navigate
through the menu items. Text selection is toggled by performing a triple
tap

with one finger.
• If you perform a five-finger tap to open the Run JAWS Manager dialog box
from an Internet Explorer window, addressed an issue where you could not
use

touch gestures to navigate this dialog box.
• To address potential issues, changes have been made to the process of
compiling scripts so they are compatible with versions of JAWS prior to
17.

The
Compatibility Mode option has been removed from Script Manager and the –c
command line switch has been removed from scompile.exe. To compile scripts
that
will work with prior versions of JAWS, you must now insert the following
line without the quotes into your JSS

The SMA does not allow you to skip releases like this. Therefore, if you had
three upgrades with the JAWS screen reading software version 11.0 rlease, this
made you elgible for:

JAWS 12.0

JAWS13.0

JAWS 14.0

You would have had to obtain an additional SMA at this point for your license

JAWS 15.0

JAWS 16.0

I've had this problem for quite a while but have just gotten around to
posting about it.

Frequently when I get email from a company like Audible for example, and the
email contains links that are identified as graphic links by Jaws, I am
unable to activate the link no matter what I do. Enter does nothing, Jaws
cursor and left click does nothing. I know the links are good because I can
forward the email to my gmail account (accessed on the web) and activate
them there.

Is this an Outlook issue? A Jaws issue? Something up with my security
settings?

Can anyone give me a clue what might be going on here? And maybe how to fix
it?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW and balance of sound for headsets

2015-11-19 Thread Scorpio Forever
There's also the option of getting your employer to purchase a single ear
headset with an ear loop, instead of an actual headband, that way you can
have Jaws flowing out of one ear, and the phone call from another ear, using
a separate headset on each ear.

These are available pretty much anywhere, Best Buy, Staples,
Wal-Mart/Amazon, etc..

You can also employ a second sound card through which you can filter Jaws,
while the phone call comes through the main sound card, that sort of thing.

Unfortunately, there are so many options for doing this, but none that will
allow you to use the same sound card, as that is undoable, unless you go
into the volume mixer, and move each sound to the left and right ear.

For example, opening the sound mixer will give you the ability to move Jaws
sounds to the right ear, while allowing you to move the main sound, or what
ever application you use for the phone calls to move to the opposite ear.

Just thinking out loud here, but I think this would be the most effective
and most inexpensive.

Hope this helps.

Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a way to force jaws to only play in the left or
right channel? I use a headset at work for calls and I would like it if I
could set at least jaws to only come to one ear and then I can set the phone
calls to be heard in the other ear. I have a very hard time listening to
jaws and the phone through the same ear.

Thanks,

2015-11-19 Thread Scorpio Forever
My apologies for my last post, as I gave incorrect information regarding
moving the sound from the dual channel to the single one. It would seem
this is not possible, and my only explanation for thinking this could be
done was that I was listening to a podcast on Winamp, and I could change the
channels on that application.

Anyway, I am sorry for the misinformation.

In all the years I've used JAWS, it's never been set up to allow channeling
to a single side. Appears to be a purely monaural signal fed to the sound
driver.

I use a Plantronics headset specifically designed for this need. Left side
is telephone plus boom mike, right side is sound card output. They also sell
a sound card dongle designed to work with this splitting.

I did that with a piece of custom hardware when I was working. One of the
field engineers made a splitter box for me. It had two inputs on one side
and one output on the other side. The box was a plastic box about a little
smaller than a cigarette package. Inside the wires from the sound card went
to one side of the stereo jack for the headphones. The phone wires went to
the other side along with the transceiver for the mike. At the time the cost
was about $9 for the parts. If you know any ham radio operators they should
be able to make one for you very easy. Also some of your computer support
technicians may also be able to make the box. I retired in 1999 and about 2
years ago while cleaning up I tossed it. I had not needed it since I retired
and then a few weeks ago I really could have used it when on the phone with
an Apple support tech.

Dear friend, make sure that you are using MS Outlook as your default email
if you are using windows 10.
It happened for me but when I did my setting MS Outlook my default email, my

If you want to do that setting, do the following
Press ctrl+I, select system, enter there.
Now down arrow until default apps press enter there
Now keep pressing tab key until you hear mail press space bar then press
space bar on MS Outlook as default email.

If you are using windows 7 or 8, then I'm afraid I don't have solution.

Hi All,

I've had this problem for quite a while but have just gotten around to
posting about it.

Frequently when I get email from a company like Audible for example,
and the email contains links that are identified as graphic links by
Jaws, I am unable to activate the link no matter what I do. Enter does
nothing, Jaws cursor and left click does nothing. I know the links are
good because I can forward the email to my gmail account (accessed on
the web) and activate them there.

Is this an Outlook issue? A Jaws issue? Something up with my security
settings?

Can anyone give me a clue what might be going on here? And maybe how to fix
it?

Thanks for any thoughts.

hit insert and f7 to open the links. Most times it will then open the link

it, and go to Firefox and paste it and then it works.

Hi Kevin,
A jump list is a list of recently used items in that program.
Accessed by the application key.
For example, in Internet Explorer, after highlighting it, press the
application key.
You will find a list of the most recently opened websites, press enter to go
directly to that site.
In Word, you will have a list of recently opened documents, press enter on
that document, and word will open it for you.

And so on, hope this helps...
Love God! with your heart, mind, and soul, that you might be blessed
reaching His goal.
Love your Neighbor as you would yourself, God will truly reward you with
good health.
Love God, your neighbor, as you love yourself, you will then be spiritually
balanced with wealth.
Love His Word that proceeds from His lips, then reflect on the heavens where

around the answers so that the correct answer lines up with its
corresponding question.

Peter,

Over the years, the consensus of this list has been to simply use cut &
paste, a lot simpler and consistent in results.

Has anyone been able to successfully drag and drop a file?
I got this requirement to do that, and can't seem to get it to work.
Cut and Paste isn't an option in this case. When I try to drag .. it
either doesn't do anything or comes back and tells me the object isn't
visible. Thanks for any help.

Just check to make sure you have a key available, or request a reset. You can
do this on www.fsactivate.com.
Then download the install and the OCR package on the download page to a thumb
drive or take your JAWS DVD, incase they have no internet access.

Howdy All,

Below are the download links for the latest J17 update: & what's new /
fixed

in this release

32 Bit:

http://files.freedomscientific.com/WebFiles/JAWS/J17.0.1214enu-x86.exe

64 Bit:

http://files.freedomscientific.com/WebFiles/JAWS/J17.0.1214enu-x64.exe

To compile scripts
that
will work with prior versions of JAWS, you must now insert the following
line without the quotes into your JSS file: ";#pragma usePoFile 0"
list end

Adobe Acrobat
list of 1 items
• Resolved an issue reported by Adobe where labels for check boxes in PDF
documents were being read twice in the virtual buffer.
list end

Microsoft Excel
list of 2 items
• In Windows 8.1, resolved an issue where the backstage view in Excel 2013

The best method IMO would be if you had a dongle, or simply did your work in
demo mode. Which sounds to me that might be your best way to go.

I have done a lot of work on family members systems ETC, so lot of demo

I've been using JAWS for 19 years and so far have not encountered that
ability. Honestly though that might very well be an issue with sound card
technology more than anything else.

Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a way to force jaws to only play in the left

I could set at least jaws to only come to one ear and then I can set the
phone calls to be heard in the other ear. I have a very hard time

Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW and balance of sound for headsets

2015-11-19 Thread Rose Combs
I worked for 26 years after having surgery for a tumor in left ear, with
reconstruction so I can hear some. I was a medical transcriptionist and I
tried many things to put JAWS to my left ear so I could hear and my
dictation on the right. Nothing was overly successful and required two
headphones at once which was uncomfortable. The only thing that did not was
trying an audible mixer, however, I got a lot of static and hum, only wore
one set but it was clunky and after a couple of days I went back to having
Jaws often blast me out if the dictation was low volume. I was annoyed by
it, often got headaches due to it but I stayed in the job until outsourced
in March this year. I even went to outsourced company but there I had more
than just volume problems, everything they tried to assure me worked may
have somewhat or not at all and the rest is history ... retired, bored, but
not ready to jump into the medical transcription field at this point because
every platform, 90% of the other activities such as payroll, filling in
needed forms, being docked test scores on HIPA because they had images one
needed to select and no way of knowing what they were, having to call third
cousin to get into TeamViewer to assist me on more than one occasion in a
six week period left me emotionally and physically ill.
Husband passed in May 2014, received outsource plan in November 2014,
struggled with getting applications and other issues with pre-employment
solved with minimal assistance and on their time, not mine, then six weeks
of always being found wanting because aspect of software just did not work
put me in a very bad place. Anyone who has had a pile-up in a several month
period should understand.

So, I wish there was a successful way to use one headphone set and keep Jaws
to one side at a volume needed not to distract but be there when needed did
exist. However, I had one device that I had to hook two different earphones
in, both of which needed their own volume controls, worked except for
wearing two earphone at the same time for a while, until the headaches
became truly unbearable.
Inventors out there Dream up something with one headset, not too heavy,
noise canceling with ability to control different items at their own volumes
and ear and you could probably have several customers, not me so much now
that I retired earlier than my original plan, but there are others who could
use such a device, not Gerry rigged, packaged nicely internal mechanics,
digitalization etc. to work with cord in back to plug in or connect to
battery, plug in front for one earphone plug and maybe buttons or knobs for
control of sides, volume, maybe tone for each side and I know some MTs who
would jump for it. Keep price down, of course.
Takers? Not me, I know nothing about electronics other than to plug in,
connect and turn on, LOL.

Hi Tom,
What I always do is go to the Freedomscientific's download page and download
the entire new copy of JAWS that includes the update. I just save the
download to my computer and install JAWS all over again. That way, it always
works and you will have the update and a fresh installed copy of JAWS. Take
care, Tom and let me know if you have any questions. Have a great one.

[JAWS-Users] Links not activating in Outlook 2013 messages

2015-11-19 Thread Kimber Gardner

Something up with my security settings?

Can anyone give me a clue what might be going on here? And maybe how to fix it?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws activating wrong link why?

2015-11-19 Thread Rose Combs
I have noted this behavior since Jaws 16, very annoying especially if one is
using arrows while reading display, I read left-handed, long story, and am a
very dominant right-handed person. Tab key is on the left and that hand,
especially if trying to order something is often on the display. Jaws 17
can occasionally drive me mad when I hear "edit" and then start to type and
hear no ... present. Just have to get used to pressing enter first, or
using the tab key, or changing a setting which could make other things not
work as intended.
However, I have thought I was on an order link, display shows I am as well
as Eloquence, press enter and find myself in a totally different place,
sometimes unable to go page back, either get JAWS lockup and can't do
anything, or get a webpage error, and have to try to exit everything or just
turn off the computer.
Annoying to say the least, although in 17 I note the wrong link is less of a
problem than it was in 16.

I have encountered this behavior in Jaws for years. It happens to me more in

Firefox than IE, but it happens in both. The best way that I have found to
circumvent the problem is to TAB to the link and then activate it, instead
of navigating to the link with the cursor keys. When using FF, I always TAB
to a link before activating.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW and balance of sound for headsets

2015-11-19 Thread Lenny McHugh

I never think of accessing Amazon via Research It! Mostly my local weather

used One look dictionary for years on the web and Google for years. I tried
to find a person once but there was no way to actually see if the person was
who I was actually looking for and results were minimal.
I could use currency, except, if the item is on a site that won't do that
for me, or if it wants me to use PayPal I just don't buy since I have had
nothing but headaches with PayPal. Accessible it may be, but it has not
been so for me and I am not a computer novice.
So, because it comes up so often I tried Amazon search this morning, it
worked to show me sales on Kleenex
Now next time I want to check local weather, it will probably give me an
error since I am so used to having my zip code there that I will probably
press enter without thinking! LOL on me!

The best method IMO would be if you had a dongle, or simply did your work in
demo mode. Which sounds to me that might be your best way to go.

I have done a lot of work on family members systems ETC, so lot of demo

Hi,
I can confirm this behavior.

Let's say there are two links I am passing by, about and contact us. I

The only way I can get the right link to launch is listing the links, tab to

Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW and balance of sound for headsets

2015-11-19 Thread Dave Carlson

Hi All,

Kimber

I think this is probably not so simple any more like it was for XP, 7,
and 8. Even if 10 is to be the last version of Windows, it will be
updated on a faster scale than ever before. This has the potential to
break accessibility in a way that the current version of Jaws, or any
screen reader, may not handle well if left forever on an old version.

The best method IMO would be if you had a dongle, or simply did your work in

I have done a lot of work on family members systems ETC, so lot of demo

Hi,
I can confirm this behavior.

How do you accomplish the cut and paste if the link doesn't appear as
an address? For example, I might come across a link that says link
graphic recommended for you. It doesn't show as a listed link and
can't be reached with the tab key either.

I don't know the answer except that if I get the cursor on the link, using
the cursor keys on a braille display will open those links.
My annoyance is that some of these messages read the subject line and stop,
display, jaws virtual or review cursors say "blank" no matter what,
sometimes pressing escape and reopening the message works, however, more
often it still is a blank message to Jaws! No one here to say if it
disappears off the screen or not. I assume it has to be something in the
HTML code somewhere, but not a programmer, so not sure of that.

Hello all,
I was wondering if there is a way to force jaws to only play in the left or
right channel? I use a headset at work for calls and I would like it if I
could set at least jaws to only come to one ear and then I can set the phone
calls to be heard in the other ear. I have a very hard time listening to
jaws and the phone through the same ear.

2015-11-19 Thread John M.

List,

Although in the past this feature was very useful, helpful,
with its recent unreliability (no fault of FS) I have just
gotten used to using the search feature on the full site.

Best,
Al

I just tried using the Amazon research feature using the
latest update of Jaws 17 and it worked for me. The five
choices showed up and when I clicked on one it went to the
appropriate Amazon site for that item albeit a little
sluggishly.

2015-11-19 Thread Rose Combs
You do not take into account updates to Windows 10, or future enhancements
of JAWS. Both could be minor or significant.
For example, Windows 10 Edge is not really usable and why they released
without accessibility in mind when it is supposedly the default browser
makes no sense to me. However, in the future Microsoft may actually
understand how to make accessibility work in every product they make and
include it just as they include all the eye candy. Notice, I say May there.

If say in a year they have actually found a way for screen readers to hook
into Edge and by doing so they can offer us great accessibility, far better
even that we have in IE 11, updating JAWS would be essential to those in the
workforce for example.
If you are going to play in technology, you need to stay at least moderately
up-to-date.
That said, I have not updated to Windows 10 because I am here alone with no
eyes to help if I get in trouble and trust me, lately I find trouble easily.
I will eventually get there but, I don't need to do that right now, so it
will wait until either I have more confidence in my ability, eyes to assist,
or I have no choice. It isn't happening today, probably not even before the
New Year but eventually it will. I held onto Windows 98 for a couple of
years after XP mainly because it was easy to fix if I had problems being
able to reinstall or correct from the disks I had. I held off on Vista
until I had to get a new computer. I deliberately bought a new computer
about 3 months after Windows 7, but I have not touched 8, in fact, I gave
away a Windows 8 computer days after my late husband passed. I bought a
laptop for work last spring but, it had to have 7 on it. Right now it is
totally messed up from the job I could not keep due to much inaccessible
software I had been told would work, some in Silverlight, web forms that
hung ... and they truly messed up the laptop. If I upgrade to 10 it will be
the first one since I seldom use it, and, in fact, can only use it to a
limited degree right now. One reason I don't use it is the keyboard, too
flat, large trackpad in front and my arms are short. I have a cordless
keyboard also but discovered that often it misinterpreted things.
Anyway, I know one cannot stand still, technology moves on, I started with
JAWS FOR WINDOWS Thanksgiving weekend in 1998 and I think it was version 2.0
or 3.0. The internet, JAWS itself, programs needed to communicate, work,
even play have come a long way in the past 17 years, I can't imagine myself
still using that first version of JAWS today. I am only recently retired,
but, for me at least keeping my main screen reader up-to-date will remain a
part of my toolbox for as long as I can use a computer.

but if one chooses to just stick with jaws 16.0.4463
running windows 10 won't you be ok forever because microsoft will not be
creating any OS higher than 10 and jaws 16.0.4463 works fine.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws activating wrong link why?

2015-11-19 Thread Mario
I generally use the spacebar rather than the enter key to activate links
and buttons. I think the enter key focuses on the default element rather
than the focused control in certain situations. for stubborn links where
no strategies seem to work, I'll press the applications key or the right
click to see if the first item is open, which entering will activate the
link.

I have encountered this behavior in Jaws for years. It happens to me

have found to circumvent the problem is to TAB to the link and then
activate it, instead of navigating to the link with the cursor keys.
When using FF, I always TAB to a link before activating.

I'm not sure if it's after the windows 10 update, or after I made
changes in
the quick setting which I don't remember what the changes were; however,
here is the skinny.

Let's say there are two links I am passing by, about and contact us. I
click contact us and the about page opens.

The only way I can get the right link to launch is listing the links,
tab to
move to link, then activate link. That is to much just to read a page
lol,
thoughts?

Windows 10, jaws 16 and IE 11.

Hi All,

Kimber
